I found it was worth the drive to Kitchener

Cushions are going to year 10 this season ...

https://www.facebook.com/FrikosUpholsteryLtd/

As an aside I took photos and measurements for all the cushions and e-mailed
the document to marine, automotive and furniture upholsterers , not
surprisingly Marine was expensive , Frikos was a good price , good material
selection , and they do a lot of Restaurant work ... so are familiar with wear
and tear

Re: Stus-List Cost to recover cushions - ouch

2015-12-18 Thread Joel Aronson via CnC-List
My settee alone is 8 cushions - 3 bottom, 3 back and 2 ends. The dinette
is probably 10 with the table top cushions. I don't have the patience to
do 18 cushions, and the Admiral isn't interested.
Looks like I need to shop around. I have some friends in the car
business. I can see if they have people who do their work.

Part of me says get it done over the winter, part of me says wait until
after the Bermuda race.

Thanks for all the help!

Hi Joel,

I'm curious as to why you spec'd Sunbrella? It's
forte is colour-fast after years of sun exposure
and it's not the most comfortable fabric to sit on.

I suggest talking about proper upholstery fabric
when dealing with your supplier.

My saloon is done in leather but that might not be the best for your style.

It's what they offered as their standard, and I thought it would be easy to

the price!

Dennis,
My cushions came off of Howard's boat when he replaced all of his!

My boat pillows are from Home Depot. Didn't know they sold fabric. Heck,
probably cheaper to buy patio cushions just for the fabric than buying
Sunbrella from a marine outlet!

Re: Stus-List Upholsterers in the Toronto area?

2015-12-18 Thread Derek McLeod via CnC-List
Hi,

I've been in the process of getting entirely new upholstery done for my 29-2 as
it was missing most cushions when I got it. Tina Morgan Designs is doing the
work. She does mostly mid-century furniture and seems very skilled. She's only
done a couple of boats before mine FWIW. I supplied her with templates for
everything based on Sailrite's instructions online. After the foam was cut, I
fit it to any little weird bumps and brought it back to have the fabric sewn
up. I'm still waiting for the final product as she has been busy and I have
little need for them until the spring.

I'm getting all new soy-based foam (supposedly mildew resistant) and went with
Sunbrella for all the interior cushions, with Sailrite's mesh fabric for the
bottom. Also got the flow through foam (forget the exact name), for two cockpit
cushions, also done with Sunbrella. And some throw pillows.

I'm not certain what the final total will end up being, based on her labour,
but have paid a deposit of $2000. Around $1000 of that went towards the foam, I
think about $800 in fabric. Tina has been very good to work with thus far and I
expect the result will be very good. That said I am hoping things will be under
$4000 all said and done...

Thought this info could be of interest to the American lister's as well since
we deal with noticeably higher prices north of the border.

Many of you are fortunate to have all separate removable cushions, bottoms
and backs. Touche's dinette and settee backs are single rolled and pleated
wraparound units stapled to the cabinetry. I like the look. It would be
very pricey to replace because the workman would almost certainly have to
come to the boat.

Many owners have removed this look and gone with separate cushion backs.

Sunbrella is pretty pricey. Look at fabrics for patio furniture. Most are
a fraction of the cost of Sunbrella. Heck, even Home Depot sells outdoor
fabrics.

Guess I'm lucky, Touche's cushions are in decent shape. However the
pattern is definitely 70's retro. Who knows, in another 40 years it might
be back in style.

Re: Stus-List little A hatches on a LF38

2015-12-18 Thread Frederick G Street via CnC-List
I just heard back from the acrylics place — they want $65 each for the lenses
for the small galley/head hatches on the LF38. These would come precut, but
not predrilled for the hinge and latch castings; you’d need to do those
yourself, due to differences in the hatches.

These same hatches are in use on a couple of other models of C, as well (33?).

Anyone interested, contact me off-list and we’ll sort through the details.
Hopefully we can get ten to order, as that’s what the acrylics place based
their costs on. And shipping would be additional.

Funny you should say that. One of the "joys" of owning a "storied" boat
is, of course, the stories.

The Admiral was at a fundraiser a few years back when the conversation
steered around to interests and then sailing. An older couple asked the
Admiral what boat she sailed on. When she replied Touche', they rolled
their eyes and said they used to cruise to Pensacola on Touche' with the
previous owners. They alluded to a few interesting times "in the old days"
but wouldn't elaborate. Maybe I'll ask the cushions the next time I'm on
the boat. :)

Stus-List C 33 MKI

2015-12-18 Thread Paul Wyand via CnC-List
Hello all, boat is coming along, nicely cleaned out on the interior, shore
power getting set up. Time to set up the propane bulkhead heater. I was
wondering if anyone with a 33 MKI has put a propane locker under the helm
seat. I have taken visual measurements and it looks like there should be
room, but just looking for ideas. I will pull out a tape next time I am
aboard.

My settee alone is 8 cushions - 3 bottom, 3 back and 2 ends. The dinette is
probably 10 with the table top cushions. I don't have the patience to do 18
cushions, and the Admiral isn't interested.
Looks like I need to shop around. I have some friends in the car business. I
can see if they have people who do their work.

Part of me says get it done over the winter, part of me says wait until after
the Bermuda race.

Thanks for all the help!

Our V berth cushions were upside down in the broker's advertising and in
real life, which is weird when you finally notice the taper is going the
wrong way. The tops of the cushions were literally a bunch of longitudinal
strings joined by occasional pieces of the (is it the weft or the woof, I
can never remember) crossways. I could only imagine what hard use those
cushions got when the boat was in charter.

Re: Stus-List Venetian parade

2015-12-18 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Just had our Christmas parade. Couple boats had lots of lights and
generator on deck.

Couple years ago I decorated Touche' with a bunch of light strings. We
probably had 15-20 strings of lights. We have about half incandescent and
half LED strings. I'd added up the wattages on the boxes for the LED
lights and estimated wattage's for the incandescents. Came to around 700
watts. Touche' has a 1000 watt inverter. When we fired everything up, the
inverter was showing around 830 watts. At 120 VAC that's about 7 amps.

In the parade we were moving at idle speed. I was constantly monitoring
the 12 VDC system on my instruments. RPM's weren't enough to maintain
voltage on the batteries. Every now and then I shifted to neutral and
revved the engine to boost amperage. We did fine over the hour long parade
using that technique.

Do the research and add up the wattage's. Try to use exclusively LED
lights, 12 VDC if you can find them. Convert to amps and remember that
your alternator doesn't generate much amperage at low RPM's.
