Re: Stus-List Stuffing Box Packing Recommendation needed

2016-01-01 Thread Russ & Melody via CnC-List

These are purpose built packing pullers:
http://www.amazon.com/Palmetto-Packing-Extractor-flexible-removeable/dp/B00887BSP8

I have a few sets from the small to very large
for doing pumps & valves. Only the small one is required for boat jobs.

A word of caution if you choose to use
Goretex/Teflon packings... do not tighten the
packing nut any more than necessary.
A time after we changed to these products at the
plant there were numerous pump shaft wear sleeves
ruined do to the gland being tightened as if it
was old style packing (severe scoring). The word
finally got around that mechanics should go easy
on install and retighten the next run day or so
to only that necessary. After a short run-in
period these packings are really good.

Wasn't the dinette table an option on most C's? Since the table was an
option and was ordered separately and delivered after the boat was launched,
you can remove it without PHRF penalty.

Yeah, I know it isn't true. :( Don't we wish.

One guy did that with a Beneteau 40.7. Bought it without the table and added
it later so he could remove it. Creative thinking.

I would like to build or buy a lightweight table that could be mast mounted

It might also be made to be pulled up to the underside of the coach roof while
being constrained by the mast when not in use and
locked to the cabin cole when in use.

I would like it to be relatively light weight in either case.

That seems simple enough... replace the gas A4 with a diesel :)

The flash point (vaporization temp) of diesel is 126 F:Â

I am pretty sure vaporized diesel will blow up
like gasoline vapor.  I know vaporized cooking
fat will.  Don’t most of the fuel docks ask
you to shut down the engine and run the fan while fueling?Â

I had never thought of it as an air supply for the engine. Â

Charlie,

See if you can get on a Beneteau 361 or a Hunter 29.5. Might give you some
insight. They have tables that slide up and down the compression post.
Use a slide bolt to keep in place. The tables have hand holds on the
underside for when they are up against the headliner.

Stus-List Clever storage modifications?

2016-01-01 Thread Dave Syer via CnC-List
Working on my saloon table today got me wondering about what others may
have done to improve the utility of their boat's interior. The table in
the 33ii is pretty decent for what it is, with a solid teak trestle like
base incoprporating a storage compartment accerssible from the top, and
folding nicely edged with teak. I was able to find a set of lighweight
plastic canisters which fit perfectly in that space and a lot of food items
get stowed there.

At each end of the table there is space between the leaves. On the forward
end I have mounted a fire extinguisher, and on the aft end I have mounted a
dual nissan/thermos holder I made out of acrylic plastic. Very handy, and
a reasonably elegant design. . (The thermoses are great, and can keep
water hot for two days. Great for my son's instant Ramen noodles -latter
day hard tack- or my constant supply of coffee.) I noticed today that I
may be able to fit a small holder for paper napkins at one end of the table
and also maybe for salt and pepper shakers at the other. Will ponder how
to approach this with some craft. I notice there is also a couple
inches of space below the table, between its legs, just begging for use.
Cutlery is already stowed in a fitted acrylic insert in the stock galley
drawer.
http://cncwindstar.blogspot.ca/2015/12/custom-cutlery-drawer-organizer-in.html

Does anybody have any mods/ideas they'd be willing to share?

Subject: Cabin Folding Table

Hi,
I'm new to the group. A year ago I purchased a 1980 C 36 that's in need of
TLC.
The interior folding table was not in place when I took possession and I was
wondering if, in addition to the base attachment, is there an additional
fastening system to the mast?

Happy New Year to All!!
I have a 30-2 and the stuff box was leaking noticeably all last season. While
periodic tightening helped, I'm guessing it's time to renew the packing.
And While a dripless seal would be great, it's not in the boat "budget".

Any thoughts to share on preferred packing materials would be greatly
appreciated.

Re: Stus-List Interesting photos of waves on L. Erie

2016-01-01 Thread S Thomas via CnC-List
It is a lot safer when on a passage to bring the dingy aboard and secure it to
the foredeck.
A lot of people make all kinds of excuses for not doing it because there is
work involved, but you run the risk of losing it by towing.

A friend of mine, sailing a Hughes 35, lost his new dingy on the relatively
short passage from Chester to Brooklyn Nova Scotia.
The weather did not follow the forecast, and a storm developed. Despite having
2 lines on it and trying several different things to reduce the jerking and
banging about, it broke free and was lost.
It may be better to be lucky than smart, but depending on luck can bite you in
the long run.

We sailed Spirit home from Lake Ontario to Lake Huron in mid-October. It was
a heck of a passage up Lake Erie (or, as my wife dubbed it: Lake Eerie!) with
20-25 kts on the nose, and a week at dock waiting for a gale to pass. The
height of the waves coupled with short period (due to shallow waters) made for
a rough ride in our newly-acquired 35 mk III. I understand this photographer
was working from the shoreline, so there's a lot more drama in those photos.

And on the topic of towing, our 10-ft RIB towed through those waters like a
champ, with a 15-hp motor on (raised up) and the gas can lashed under the seat.
I thought the little fella was going to get swamped a hundred times, but it
stayed upright for the entire 600-mile journey. We had a snubber (shock
absorber) in the tow line which helped ease the load on the stern cleats. In a
following sea, it would come up from behind and kiss the stern. I have a
feeling the gas can might have taken on some water, however, because I couldn't
get the otherwise-reliable outboard to fire up after we finally reached our
home port of Bayfield.

dentistry hygienist to help.

Have used GFO packing for years. It seems to be better than the standard
flax packing.

Just make certain you get all the old packing out first. What should be a
relatively simple task took me considerably more time than I had allocated -
in other words, a fairly typical boat project.

Good luck

Stus-List Interior finishes - 84 33ii and others of that vintage.

2016-01-01 Thread Dave Syer via CnC-List
Happy new year all!

Working in the shop today, I was refastening the tenon to the foot of
Windstar's saloon table to its 'leg', and while inverted on the bench (the
saloon table, not me) I noticed the flaking varnish and the PO's sloppy
brushwork. And lo, another project was added to the list. That varnish
was easily scraped off with a hooked cabinet scraper, and it got me to
wondering

Does anybody know what was originally used to finish the woods in the
interior?

Table
The top of my table clearly has an aging coat of satin varnish. The base
had a thin coat of flaking varnish, at least down low. Was it teak oil
originally? Urethane? will probably refinish the entire table. When
refinishing, what has provided the best results?

Cabin sole
My keel repairs necessitated removing the entire cabin sole, which,
fortunately, has been well protected by several sloppy coats of varnish.
Looks good from far, and in any case is not stained or water damaged, which
is a plus. Probably a solvent wipe, lump scrape, light sand and revarnish
Any idea on the original finish here? Again, best results?

Thanks!

Dave
