Hello all, I am looking for peoples experience with AB inflatables.  I am
looking at purchasing a new tender for my C&C Landfall and I came across this
brand in my search.  I currently own a 1978 Zodiac that has been a great tender
for the past 35 years.  However, everything ages and it is time to move on to a
new boat.  I am looking for something that is going to be durable, stable, and
tows and handle well.  My current Zodiac is a soft bottom with a wood floor,
but I want to change to a v-shaped aluminum bottom.  I am also wanting to stay
with Hypalon material as I am planning to use this on a future Atlantic
circumnavigation. The AB Lamina UL10 brand seems to be a good replacement,
however, I don't know anyone who owns one.  Any reviews that people can
contribute or alternative makes would be appreciated.  Regards,Jason WardS/V

Stus-List Sailrite Machine

2016-02-04 Thread Sam Salter via CnC-List

It developed into a sail repair & canvas business that supports my boat mtce and my charters in the tropics!I support what Graham says! My machine has been very well used over the last 10 years and has not let me down once. We have been happy with our 9ft AB-hypalon tender thus far. i felt the
aluminum hull would be the least likely to be damaged in beach landing and
wouldn’t show the scratching from rocks and debris while tied to the beach.
Nearly any shop or amateur welder can fix aluminum, some prettier than others.
i would say the floor stays very cool in the water. Ours is naked aluminum,
and will stay that way. We power it with a 5 hp merc 2-stroke. Planes with
one aboard, but not 2. it is a long shaft though so might do better with a

We carry it on davits.

There was some discussion I recall recently on cruiser's forum about a recent
(and maybe temporary) deterioration in AB quality while their plant was moving
between Venezuela and Columbia.

There were also discussions about the aluminum floor being very hot on bare
feet and paint peeling off the aluminum floor.

I recently considered the AB but decided on an Apex Lite with fiberglass floor.
(They are made in Costa Rica and sold by Fawcetts in Annapolis.)

The other consideration for me was that I can repair fiberglass--I can't weld
aluminum.

Rino,

Agreed with Steve, after reviewing MANY surveys over and crawling around many
boats, over 3 decades, I find most are very superficial indeed.    To be fair,
most surveyors cannot realistically know the specific issues to look for in
each model.
That said, we are in C&C land and several of the local surveyors know the boats
and a few actually worked for C&C over the years.   (one - a dutch name escapes
me, but a good guy and he's down your way.)

Stus-List now sailrite RE: ab inflatables

2016-02-04 Thread Petar Horvatic via CnC-List
Bill,

I can’t tell you how many times iv’e stitched a rip while under way. For
cruising in the tropics, where sun always wins, you are going to get a rip.
Even the best of uv threads will give way at some point. A ripped sail is
actually worse than losing the engine. For the seasonal weekend warriors with
seatow, its pointless, but if you’re offshore or spending time in the tropics
and third world countries, its priceless. I am more of a weekend warrior now,
but my cruising, self-sufficient habits are still with me.

Re: Stus-List ab inflatables

2016-02-04 Thread Petar Horvatic via CnC-List
We’ve been using 2004 AB 10AL for about 4 years now, it has a fiberglass
bottom. Prior to that I had Caribe C10 (AB and caribe are hypalon). And
before that a mercury RIB 10’(PVC).

We live on the boat 5-6 months out of the year so the dinghy gets a lot of use.
Pretty much like a car but lower mileage. I saw few aluminum ABs and while
they are light, I would be afraid to go fast in it. it gets out of control way
too easy. If you are plaining, even a smallest wake gets dangerous. My
comments are based on going from Caribe(heavier) to AB(lighter) with fiberglass
bottom. AB with aluminum is even lighter and I would imagine even more erratic
while moving at plaining speeds.

Stay away from PVC. And sew yourself a dinghy cover. Tropical sun will
disintegrate anything. For circumnavigation Sailrite sewing machine is worth
its weight in gold.

want to change to a v-shaped aluminum bottom.  I am also wanting to stay with
Hypalon material as I am planning to use this on a future Atlantic
circumnavigation. The AB Lamina UL10 brand seems to be a good replacement,
however, I don't know anyone who owns one.  Any reviews that people can
contribute or alternative makes would be appreciated.

Re: Stus-List Propeller Question for 35-3

2016-02-04 Thread Tim Goodyear via CnC-List
Sam,

I have a 2-blade Martec Elliptic 17x10 RH folding prop for a 1" shaft that
you are welcome to try out for the cost of shipping (from New England). It
came off my 35-3 with Yanmar 3GMF and 2.2:1 transmission.

Fair warning, I replaced it with a flex-o-fold because I wasn't happy with
performance in reverse and occasional unbalanced opening (one blade more
than another) at low revs...

Re: Stus-List Made an offer on a C&C 35 mk2

2016-02-04 Thread Hoyt, Mike via CnC-List
I would not be too worried about buying without seeing the boat however it is
not really necessary. This list gives each of us a lot of contacts all over
North America in particular. Even one in Mexico!

When we purchased Persistence we made an offer that was subject to survey. The
offer was made one hour after I found out the boat was for sale and after a
referral by a friend and one conversation on the phone with the owner. This
made the survey very important. At the same time fellow lister Harry Hallgring
visited the boat for an up close look on my behalf. Harry confirmed that there
was nothing that would be nasty but a survey would not point out (odor, etc)
and also confirmed an overall impression of the boat. Knowing all the work
Harry has done on his current boat and on his J27 before that it really gave me
a great confidence in the boat and in the deal

Use the list. It is an amazing resource.

Mike

The 3GM engine would indicate the boat’s original engine was replaced and the
monel fuel tank is a very good thing.
I would not buy a car, airplane, or boat sight-unseen myself, but too late now.
I hope this works out – the 35s (all versions) are nice boats!

Good day..

It has a 3GM Indirect cooling from what I can tell and a Monel fuel tank...
again I need to validate this.. Now for the kicker, and please no flaming :(
I made an offer based on a discussion and photos , I did not see in person the
boat yet.. We already had been on a few 35Mk2 before and loved this boat.. So
when we saw a nice 3gm , new running and standing rigging, we jumped.. and
pulled the tricker..

Thanks,

WOW!
C&Cs in general would not be my first pick for icebreaking duty if the
Northwest Passage is what you meant, but we had a guy from Annapolis do it in a
Vega 27. You would be living in luxury compared to that boat.

For the next two years we will be at the Royal St Lawrence in Montreal, then
its off to Marigot St Martin for a year or so, then les Azores , after that the
Netherlands, then we shall see. but my dream is the northern passage (in a
convoy)
but time will tell, how far we get once in St martin..

Gert Tiel - that's the Dutch name I could not remember! He worked there. In
the plant?
Nice guy who generously gave me great advice in a lengthy conversation over the
phone as I was evaluating a 35i .(Mystic) Very intimate knowledge of the
construction of the boat.Ultimately I took his advice and bought "the
newest boat within your budget". '85 33ii.

I used Gert Tiel...not much detail but I knew Alera was my boat when
I saw it and just needed something for the valuation re
insurance. Besides, who better to survey a C&C?

An original A4, if RWC, can be considered fully depreciated by now and most of

FWIW When I inquired about some work with Bristol marine in Port Credit, Nick
Bailey made the following recommendations of surveyors who they felt knew C&C
boats. No affiliation or relationship etc...

have an experienced surveyor familiar with these issues look at the boat. i.e.
Bill Provis, 416-801-5527; Peter McGuire
416-809-2186; or Wallace Gouk 416-526-3845

That said, read up, ask questions here and do your own survey as well.lift
the cabin sole, look at all of the floor timbers (whatever they're called in a
plastic boat)

One thing I did not do and should have, was insisted on the opportunity to put
the boat through its paces in the water, under power.

Good Luck!

Peter McGuire, Fastnet Yacht Services.
He did mine. I wasn't unhappy with the work but since then I've questioned
the value of surveys in general. He didn't tell me anything I didn't know.
He did a good job but stayed within his scope. I can send you my survey if
you want a sample of the work. I don't believe I'm breaking any agreement
by sharing it.

I'm far from a pro, just a blunderer who's read a lot of Don Casey and
Nigel Calder. I own the same moisture meter that those guys use. The notion
that you have to be a rocket surgeon to use a moisture meter is a little
beyond me. There's a lot an amateur can learn about a boat with one of
those before spending $600 on a survey. Sure, you can get false positives,
like backing plates registering as moisture .. but you won't get false
negatives. If there's moisture, it'll find it.
