Re: Stus-List Keel bolt pattern '78 36 footer
FYI, What is drawn on paper and what is actually fabricated can sometimes be very different. I have the drawing for my boat model and the keel maker placed the bolts differently. It was probably a change approved by the designer but never updated on the drawings. Just sayin. Re: Stus-List New bearing arrived. How to make it tighter.
Brian, I'd suggest cutting off the excess length, since it's not supported and could bend or distort. The fact that the bearing is loose in the strut housing is not ideal, it'd be better if it was at least a light drive fit, the set screws should not be depended on to hold the bearing in place. Without going crazy and putting in sleeves, etc, probably epoxy is your quickest approach. Some kind of filler/adhesive, JB Weld or similar, might be best. Re: Stus-List Wet Coast C's for Sale
Add the C 48 “Morning Star” at Swiftsure Yachts, Seattle to the Wet Coast list, at a slightly higher price point. This 48 was restored by the same guy that restored the 43 “Evening Star”. The owner has been around C’s so long he was one of the race crew on Calypso when it was named “Arieto” and raced out of Boston back in the 70’s. After seeing the quality of work done on Evening Star I am confident the 48’s quality of finish and equipment is top notch. IIRC the boat spent some time cruising up and down the East Coast. Re: Stus-List New bearing arrived. How to make it tighter.
Brian, I think I would trim the excess length (because I've never seen one stick out beyond the strut). And you need room for the zincs and the prop. I think I would apply three coats of wax to the bronze surface to prep it for an epoxy filler shim coat. The wax prevents the epoxy from bonding to the cutless bearing. I would dry fit the thing using the shaft to align the bearing. Assemble the shaft to the engine coupling and check alignment and see if the bearing would work better in any direction. Pull the prop end of the shaft in the direction required to get a better alignment and tie it off there. You may need to use a syringe to inject the epoxy into the resulting void from the forward end. Then let that cure overnight and tighten the set screws the next day. Their trick was to run a dull, rounded tool down the length of the shaft as the lathe was slowly turning. They didn't remove any steel. They just created a small groove and a greater diameter on each side of the groove. I'm sure that if you took your bearing to a machine shop that they would be aware of the trick. When I changed my bearing I cut it to the proper length on my lathe. Steve, The Crusader drawings would be in the C Archives at the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston, ON. See (http://www.marmuseum.ca/). Contact the curator, Sandrena Raymond. The drawings would show the keel bolt sizes and locations. Re: Stus-List Keel and Centerboard ? 40' Crusader
Are we referring to the Crusader 40 from the late 1960's? Is so, here is text from an old email from the list. The Marine Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston likely have the Crusader 40 drawings as it was a George Cuthbertson design: *From:* Ben Holthof [mailto:bholt...@marmuseum.ca] *Sent:* Tuesday, February 21, 2012 1:40 PM *To:* Rob Ball *Subject:* Re: Marine Museum C collection Hi Rob I do have a C 35 Mk III lines drawing, with a drawing number of 81-15-1 Your friend can contact me directly if he wishes. I can also send him a complete list of the C 35 drawings that we have in case he wants more of them. I can have a print or a scan made. The Museum does charge a small amount for copies of plans. $10.00 per plan plus a curatorial service fee of $25.00 per hour of my time. The first half hour is free but taking a plan out of the archives, bringing it to the copy place and returning and then putting everything away usually takes about an hour and a half. Larger sets of drawings take more time. These charges basically cover the Museums costs. We also charge shipping to mail the prints (a drawing in a tube is around $15.00) and tax (13%) here in Ontario. If someone has a scan made there is no shipping because I can usually e-mail the drawing to them. It can be cheaper for them to get a print made at a printing place local to them than it is for me to ship a drawing in a shipping tube. We then ask the client to call the Museum with a VISA or Mastercard, and we will process the order and send the plan. Have your friend contact me or let me know how you want to proceed and we can get the copies made and sent out. Stus-List Keel and Centerboard ? 40' Crusader
A local community sailing organization has been given an old Crusader. She has been a project boat for 10-12 years and a couple of owners so she's in pieces right now. I'm working on putting her back together. My immediate issues are the keel and board. I want to check and tighten the bolts. Someone has covered each keel bolt with putty and then several layers of fiberglass cloth. They did the same or the centerboard pin. This has kept the stainless dry and when I chipped away the putty the bolts look new. The boat is currently on the hard. When we hauled her there was a gap around the hull keel joint. When she was blocked up and the load put on the keel the gap did close some. I intend to clean out the gap and use G Flex to fill with a layer of tape on the outside to fair. Question 1. Does anyone know how many keel bolts there are in this boat? I have found 9 but there looks like a couple more mounds at the end of the keel but I don't know if they are bolts. Secondly, the centerboard is out of the boat because the hole that the pivot pin goes through rusted away and the board left the boat. The board I have appears to be 1/4" steel plate wrapped with glass. The pivot 'ear' is completely gone. Question 2. Does anyone know where I can find a drawing with dimensions of the board? I have a local machine ready to cut a new one but need to have those dimensions.
