Re: Stus-List now: tablets with/without GPS

2016-04-05 Thread Marek Dziedzic (hotmail) via CnC-List
Again splitting hair, but a lot of Android and Windows tablet come with GPS,
but no cellular radio. An 8” can be had easily for under $300 or even around
$100 (lately, Costco had one for sale at $99 CAD (Acer 8” Android with GPS
included)). Only Apple ties the GPS with the cellular radio; most of the other
vendors don’t.

Older Samsun tablets used a proprietary connector (trying to out-Apple Apple?);
this is no longer the case. Some tablets use a MicroUSB for charging (5 V,
usually around 2 A) others, especially the 10-11” ones, use a dedicated power
plug/port. These latter ones might be tricky on the boat, because they can use
a different voltage (12 V, 17 V, anything) and this might require a special
adapter or powering them through an inverter. But there are enough options
available for tablets powered using the USB (5 V). Keep in mind that if your
tablet uses the USB port for powering/charging, it may be impossible to connect
a USB device to it at the same time.

Btw. for those who may not know this, most tablets (and smartphones) with a
MicroUSB connector (this excludes any iPad)can be used with just about any low
power USB device. You need a USB2Go cable and that’s it.

Only some tablets have cellular network capability, and if they do not, then
they are not likely to have GPS built in either. I bought a 10 inch Samsung Tab
2 that has LTE capability, and it does work as a chart plotter, but only as
good as the software down loaded. Hard to find cables for the Tab 2 by the way.
The 30 pin connector is not the same as on the I-phone-pad stuff.

I was disappointed that a tablet with LTE connectivity could not be used as a
cell phone. That decision by the manufacturers is marketing, and not technical.
Yeah I know there is Skype etc., but it would be handy to make regular phone
calls with a headset and a large screen.

Re: Stus-List LED Nav Lights

2016-04-05 Thread Jeffrey Nelson via CnC-List
We've used LED - Red/Green/White on the top of the mast all LED. On
Deck we have Red/Green/Stern and steaming light half way up the mast, all
incandescant (they came with the boat). We wired it all to a 3 position
switch - off - Sailing LED lights - Motoring deck incandescant lights.

This ensured that when the engine was running we only needed to flip one
switch and we would never have both sets of lights operating at

the same time.

I don’t recall any requirement in the COLREGS that a “Masthead” light
actually be at the top of a mast. And since the “Masthead light”
identifies that the boat being observed is a power driven vessel, I
would be kind of surprised if there was such a requirement.

Sailing Vessels display only red and green bow lights and a 135
degree white stern light (or, in the alternative a red, green and
white tricolor light at the top of the tallest mast).

I suppose that’s why sailors like you and I think of the white light
on the front of the mast as a Steaming Light. We only turn it on when
we are “steaming” and our sailboat becomes a tall power boat.

The number and positions of the “masthead lights” on a power driven
vessel are spelled out in the COLREGS and will indicate the length of
the boat (and fore from aft). I do think they need to be the highest
lights on display, but I’ve seen masthead lights affixed to a bracket
on the top of the wheelhouse on a trawler, and to the strut holding
the radar antenna on a tug, and those don’t count as a masts in my book.

2016-04-05 Thread Peter Fell via CnC-List
I just got a '4imprint' catalog at work. I've probably tossed a couple dozen of
these in the recycle but this time I thought ... C&C caps?

Good looking 2-tone ('wave' of colour on the bill) cap including embroidery
with no tape setup charge is:

$8.75 ea for 36
$7.95 ea for 72
$6.95 ea for 144
$6.50 ea for 288
$5.76 ea for 576

Cheaper single-colour option is on sale until 15 May:

$7.25 ea for 48
$6.75 ea for 72
$5.50 ea for 144
$4.95 ea for 288
$4.50 ea for 676

Set-up tape charge of $35 for 72 pieces or less

All prices in $CAD

They will send you free samples

www.4imprint.ca

Not sure how those prices compare with others.

Looks like they might be based in Windsor (it’s just listed as a PO Box number
... so it’s probably actually serviced out of Detroit).

I’ve sail before and I’m still thinking that bulk shipment to ‘regional’ reps
would be the cheapest for final distribution and that rep could hit the local
C&C Rendezvous.

Next year you approach places like HMP to take some items to the Toronto Boat
show on the groups behalf or let a rep use a corner of their booth and perhaps
Shoreline as well (since both still have some C&C parts stock) ? Other areas
could approach their local suppliers that cater to the sailboat crowd to do
same.

I would highly suspect that water bottles and coffee mugs would be a good
seller too.

Seveeral months ago we stopped selling the Ball Caps and for several good
reasons.

Gladys, the embroidery queen, wore out her $2000 sewing machine and could
not justify replacing it. I learned quite a few new words when she was
sewing the caps.

We were purchasing decent hats wholesale and the company dropped the line
and introduced a new line at almost twice the cost.

The Post Office increased the cost of shipping. Shipping to the USA went
from $5.00 to almost $8.00. To ship in Canada to the west coast it was
over $14.00. Even having a commercial account with Canada Post, the costs
were outrageous. Fedex, UPS and others out completely out of the picture.

Every time the costs went up, I tried to absorb it but eventually it was
costing us and Gladys got nothing for her frustrations.

I'll pursue the matter this summer and see if we can get a commercial
company to make the hats for us at a reasonable cost and see if there is a
shipping method that is affordable.

Now if you have someone who can handle a needle and thread, Gladys is
still doing the embroidered C&C patches on another machine. Get yourself
a hat and have someone sew the patch on for you.

I'll certainly look into the possibility of getting the hats back online.

Stus-List Ball Caps

2016-04-05 Thread Stu via CnC-List
My arrangement with C&C Yachts was that any logoed items MUST be sold on the
Photo Album and not in Yacht Clubs, fairs or trade shows or any other venue.
Joe Bognar, who was looking after the T-shirts got stopped at the National
Yacht Club in Toronto during a C&C Regatta.

It all has to do with copyright laws and rules. Even though C&C has adopted a
new logo, the still own the copyright to the old one.

If you can find an embroidery company that will do the hats without copyright
permission, you could probably get a few made for personal use. Just don’t get
caught selling them for a profit.

If someone wants to take on this venture, pay for the hats and setup fee, I
will put them on the Photo Album and send you each order once payment has been
received. Then I will send you the money (less a bit for the Photo Album).

In the past we found shipping from Canada to Canada could cost upwards of $14.
From Canada to anywhere in USA runs just over $6.00. If you get small
re-cycled boxes for $.25 each, you can probably get up to 5 in a box and
shipping is the same.

If you want to sell the hats, let me know off the lists and we can work out the
details.

Stu
p.s. I do not want to get involved in the cost of the hats or the shipping. ___

changes or new logos. Their products are great quality - embroidery outstanding
- and best of all have a 4 item minimum - and can be 4 different garments /
hats etc. They also have a service that allows clubs etc to set up a "store"
- allowing members to order items - and allow the club to get a cut - might be
worth a look to set something up on the c&cphotoalbum.

Stus-List Automatic Charging Relay

2016-04-05 Thread John Pennie via CnC-List
So while connecting batteries today i discovered, to my surprise, that Paws has
an automatic charging relay between the two battery banks. Yes, I’m still
learning this boat. So as I understand it, once voltage hits 13.6 volts (or
13.0 for 2 minutes) the relay will automatically combine the two banks to share
the changing source. Not sure how I feel about that.

On the plus side, I guess it’s great that I don’t have to worry about moving a
battery selector switch while the engine is running. On the down side -

How does a battery charger monitoring two banks handle this? I just seems it
has to screw up the logic on the charger.
Essentially there is no way to isolate charging? So if I know I only have
limited time to charge and want to concentrate on one bank I have no choice?

What I missing?

John

2016-04-05 Thread Gary Russell via CnC-List
Hi John,
I've had ACRs on my boats for the last 15 years and I think they are
one of the best upgrades you can do. When I bought "Kaylarah" (formerly
"High Maintenance",adding and ACR was one of my first upgrades. They are
usually wired to charge the house bank first, then the start bank. If your
start bank was very low, you could could still use a combine switch to get
the engine started. I have never had a problem with the ACRs and I can't
say the same about a 1-BOTH-2 switch. All you have to do is forget to
switch to 1 or 2 after you shut the engine off and you can kill both
batteries while sitting on a hook. That won't happen with and ACR. I
think you will come to like them.

Re: Stus-List Automatic Charging Relay

2016-04-05 Thread John Pennie via CnC-List
Thanks Gary. I get that and I suppose it certainly simplifies the wiring - you
essentially have one bank for charging purposes. No opinion at this point
although I do feel silly having spent the last year dutifully switching between
1-both -2. I assume it’s just a relay that connects the circuit at a set
voltage. Not sure how it can be smart enough to determine which bank to charge
first but perhaps they are more than just a relay.

It's not "smart" it always starts charging the "primary" bank first. Once
the primary battery is full (ish) it combines the second battery.
