Actually, I've threatened to paint the bulkheads on my boat eggshell white, but
my wife won't hear of it. She says it feels nice and cozy...and my woodwork is
in excellent shape, so I just varnish it.

I installed these exact lifhts during the refurbishment of my C&C 36. They
work perfectly. I installed a double in the galley as I wanted better lighting
for cooking and meal prep. After 3 years of regular use I have not had any
issue at all.I would certainly recommend them as well.I did install
other lights in the rest of the boat as I found them super bright.

Re: Stus-List C&C 40 question

2017-07-05 Thread Chuck S via CnC-List
PHRF ratings are one way to judge potential speed. These came from Long Island
Sound

Redline 41 is rated 120
C&C 40 standard rig and keel rates 99
C&C 37/40 rates 66

Each C&C design improved on speed and interior volume.
The new all carbon Redline 40 rates 18, but not much interior.

My boat is rated 93. We sail that fast and had early success racing among
average boats off of Atlantic City. Now in the Chesapeake, I'm racing against
hardcore, experienced crews and the boats are baltoplated and burnished and
kept in a lift or drysailed from a trailer and the sails are brand spanking
new. My boat is a mancave. I added air conditioning and a big flat screen TV,
so I can drive down after work Friday night and turn it on and relax, have a
cold brew and get a a good nights rest at the dock. We race Sat morning.

I had stuck rings and know what that looks like. Cylinder 1 and 2 were 165
and 155 respectively. 3 was ~360. I managed to get them unstuck and the
last time I checked they were all greater than 400. They dipstick and HP
pump shims have always leaked at the same rate.

Re: Stus-List C&C 40 question

2017-07-05 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
Different boat. The 37+ or 37XL or 37R or 37/40 are all the same hull and
as I understand it were designed as a successor to the 37. Only about 150
hulls were made between 1989 and 1994. The fire at the C&C factory seems
to have cut this lineage short. Hearsay is that while still on the drawing
board the new C&C 37 was going to have fresh modern lines to compete with
the Beneteaus of the day. A vertical bow and transom to be specific. Upon
seeing this modern conception it was decreed that it looked horrible and
instead of a complete redesign $40 of fiberglass was added to the bow and
$40 to the stern. Ultimately this resulted in a boat which measures nearly
40'.

The first three models (37+, 37R, and 37XL) were marketing ploys. Any and
all hulls were available with nearly all of the options. Eventually
confusing over the different trim lines and the length resulted in the
marketing changing the trim line to 37/40.

To the best of my knowledge neither the 37 or 40 were ever produced after
the release of the 37+ in 1989.

Re: Stus-List Yanmar 3gm oil leak

2017-07-05 Thread Bill Dakin via CnC-List
The only time I've known this to happen on internal combustion engines was
when the combustion gas pressures passed the compression rings and passed
the oil control ring to cause crankcase pressures to force out oil spray.
Oil spray within the crankcase is normal, it is when the negative pressure
outside forces it out of filler. Now might be a good time to run a
compression test on the cylinders for the heck of it.

I experience a similar condition. Mine is compounded by the HP pump shims
weeping oil. I'd be willing to try a new dipstick first if one was
available and not too costly. Truly I probably only need the dipstick
gasket.

Re: Stus-List Treating Monel water tanks

2017-07-05 Thread Russ & Melody via CnC-List

Hey guys,

You guys might need to dig a little deeper, try
wiki/monel and look to the section "other" and
the alloy Monel 400, which will be the common tank material.

BTW, it is also the best alloy for kitchen
sinks... a much harsher application than a water
tank that gets "shocked" once or twice a year.

It is THE preferred alloy for marine
applications, far superior than stainless steels
but a little more expensive so you won't see much
on production yachts. Lastly, a little reminder
about our salt water boats sitting in a solution
of NaCl (sodium & chloride) and the shaft and
thingies down there last for years and years
because of an ultra low corrosion rate if Monel is used.

My spring tank routine is a bleach shock (about
1/2 cup for 15 gallons) to a 1/2 tank then fill
to top. After a 1 beer soak, I pop the outlet
hose and drain to bilge. A couple of good rinses
follow and done for another year. During summer I
might add a teaspoon of bleach during a fill if I
remember. We use the tank for drinking and coffee
water but put it through a Britta filter.

The above will freshen the bilge as a bonus.

Just did some Google-Fu and Monel might not be especially good with chlorine.

Stus-List Yanmar 3gm oil leak

2017-07-05 Thread Howard and Skippy via CnC-List

Hello All,
For the last few years, I had a significant loss of oil whenever I
ran the engine for more than a few minutes. During 1 run through Hell's
Gate back to home waters in Raritan Bay, the oil light and buzzer
sounded (naturally at the worst time). We hoisted the sails and sailed
down the East River - not recommended! When in Raritan Bay the wind
died, I got a tow from SeaTow back to the mooring. This convinced me to
rebuild the engine over last winter, however, after a great deal of
trouble shooting and having multiple eyes look at the situation, we
noticed that the bulk of the oil was accumulating on the side of the
engine with the dip stick. The dip stick slid in easily. Further
exploration led to the conclusion that the source of the oil leak was,
in fact, the dip stick. Finding a new replacement for an old 3GM was a
task as all the dealers said none were available. An old salty engine
repair man I met at the Annapolis boat show told me he could get one. He
did. I now have a tight seal and no oil leak! If you have an old Yanmar
and it has a mystery leak, check your dipstick for proper fit.

I always thought Monel was the most corrosion-proof type of metal to be had. I
can tell you my fresh water system benefits hugely from putting the whole
bottle of Clorox in once a year, flushing it through, and adding a little bit
with every fill. I have fiberglass tanks. We still don’t drink tank water
unless dying of thirst though.

Hi Joel,

Why are you looking for a chlorine alternative?

It is probably your best choice to treat monel tanks. Monel is spec'd in many
chlorine handling applications because of its excellent corrosion resistance.

It is an excellent oxidizer, will kill undesirable microbes and is unstable
enough to be non-reactive in a relatively short time. Apply to the tank a week
or more before you're going away. Golden.
