Joel,

You may want to have a look at these two articles:

https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0419/9489/files/PS1312_War_Against_Head_Odors_2_reprint1404_web.pdf
(why it shows up as Shopify, I have no clue, but it is a Practical Sailor’s
review of sanitation hoses and it is a PDF, so you can keep it. They say that
Trident 101/102 is not necessarily the best option, though it is the cheapest
of the good ones. If you have tight corners, Raritan might be a better option.
Keep in mind that this article is a bit dated (Dec 2013).

https://www.practical-sailor.com/blog/More-Great-Tips-for-Stopping-Boat-Stink-10852-1.html
 - this is a bit of a guide that you probably want to read before you start the
project.

Glad I asked! I’ll defer to the collective wisdom and go with the 101/102.
I’ll borrow a small angle grinder to speed the process. This is not a job I
want to repeat!

The Raritan valve is worth a look too.

This winter I am going to replace the sanitation hose and Y valves in both
heads.

Amazon has a 50 foot roll of 140 series Trident hose for $150. Any reason
this is the wrong hose? Anyone in Annapolis want to split a roll? (Beats
10/foot at the local stores)

Looking for recommendations on a Y valve. The bosworth seems like a good
option. Anyone use them?

Stus-List Sanitation hose with wire

2017-11-06 Thread robert via CnC-List
Several of the hoses on my boat that are wired, I know because I either
put them there in the first place and/or replaced them, e.g. sanitation,
exhaust, scupper, etc.no hard or 90 deg. angle to try to
attach.like Paul E. cut with a hack saw, trim if necessary.I was
led to understand that these critical hoses should never get crushed,
obstructed, closed for any reason and therefore the wired hose was the
safest way to go.harder to compress a wired to stop the flow.

As for the Y-valve, I installed one on the boat 12 years ago and would
have to go to it to find out what brand/model it waswill get there
this week and get backbeen there 12 years and works fine for what
that is worth.

Stus-List Bosworth Y-valve

2017-11-06 Thread kelly petew via CnC-List
Last season, I replaced my Bosworth Y-valve with the same model. The handle
broke off in my hand. It was my fault - lack of lubrication.

I spoke directly with someone at Bosworth, but can't recall her name. She was
very helpful in making sure I got the correct valve. I think I emailed pics to
aid in selecting the correct valve.

While I was worried about the process of replacing the [probably original]
valve, [e.g., limited access, the difficulty of removing the old part, etc.],
it wasn't that hard.

Good luck with the project.

Re: Stus-List Sanitation hose and Y valves

2017-11-06 Thread Dreuge via CnC-List
Joel,

I have to agree with Danny. Trident 101 (or the white 102) is a much better
hose that Trident 140. I have worked with both and honestly I think working
with the white PVC sanitation hoses (i.e. 140) is a much great pain in the ass.

As for Y-valves, I have been real happy with the Jabsco Y-valve

Here is a quote from Maine Sail on Sailnet regarding sanitation hoses.

=
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do yourselves a favor and STOP USING THE WHITE PVC
SANITATION HOSE
.
Unless you want to throw your hard earned money straight out the window this
stuff is PURE GARBAGE. It can odor permeate in as little as 12 months but
almost always in less than 2 years.

DO NOT USE:
Trident #148
Trident #140
Shields #144
Shields #148
Clear PVC Anything

The above hoses are pure unadulterated JUNK and a wallet draining rip off.
Please stop supporting the companies that make this crap by purchasing it. It
is NOT a sanitation hose

no matter what they tell you.. If you want your vessel to smell like a
cess-pool go for it, otherwise use Trident #101 or Trident #102.

Do Use:
Trident #101 (black)
Trident #102 (white)

Joe and Joel,
I have used ShipModul Miniplex2 for many years to send NMEA data from the chart
plotter at the helm to MacENC to a Mac laptop using USB, but more recently
using it to convert the NMEA to wifi so it can be sent to an iPad. I’ve been
using iNavX on the iPad, but probably other software works as well. You connect
the iPad to the Wifi name and then tell iNavX what host and port that the
Miniplex is transmitting on. Explained clearly in the iNavX program. Seems to
work very well.

I run Navionics on three Idevices. The software and the chart subscription

My Raymarine is a separate Navionics chart subscription. Tried directly with
appeal to them... no

The Raymarine MFD wifi iPad app puts the iPad in as a dumb repeater from MFD..

THE Navionics app and the Raymarine app do not talk to each other... someday?

New is the opportunity to share tracks and waypoints somehow, email I think.
Live mirroring is not enabled.

QUESTION
Anyone have Navionics on more than one device? When I got the IPad on my
account I have every single app ready to port over that I have on the phone
including Navionics Hiking, but NOT the Navionics marine navigation app? Is
this some Apple malfunction or is Navionics trying to get paid twice? If I have
to buy it again, I can get INAV-X for about half the price.

I just ordered this:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/NMEA-0183-to-WiFi-BRIDGE-/182598371832
$37 or so US dollars shipped free from Australia. They have two NMEA channel
versions too.
I was tempted to stick the AIS in my car and drive over the Bay Bridge, it
surely will get picked up 200 feet in the air, but then thought of a tanker
hitting a cruise ship and then they both hit the bridge and knock it over while
avoiding getting rammed by the westbound boat doing 60 knots made me rethink my
plan.
Speaking of which, there is at least one airplane flying around with AIS.
Freaked me out the first time I saw a 99 knot “boat” hit dry land and keep
going! I had a weird symbol, maybe an circle with an X IIRC/

NOT take a GPS fix on any input but 4800 baud port 3, so even though the AIS
will send all the GPS data along with AIS on 38K baud, the plotter won’t read

Re: Stus-List Silicone residue...

2017-11-06 Thread Dreuge via CnC-List
Practical Sailor did a test on adhesive removers in the January 2017 issue.
They recommend Re-Mov Silicone and Adhesive Remover. Below is a quote from the
test results:

Re-Mov Silicone and Adhesive Remover

This remover was our most effective overall for removing both silicone caulk
residue and polyurethane adhesive. According to the maker, Re-Mov will debond
polyurethane-bedded hardware even if it has been in place for years. While we
found it a bit slower acting than other products, the end results were truly
impressive. Two applications, 15 minutes apart, a few quick passes with a
plastic scraper, 20 seconds scrubbing with a bristle brush, and a good wash
with soap and water, eliminated all the silicone from a textured deck, allowing
it to match original bond strength.

If we had a bonding or coating job in which silicone contamination of the
surface was suspected, this would be our antidote. Polyurethane caulk was a
tougher challenge, but it did allow us to remove the caulk without damaging the
gelcoat.

Bottom line: Re-Mov is the PS Best Choice and Budget Buy for removing silicone
or polyurethane caulk.

Re: Stus-List AIS improvement + general rewiring

2017-11-06 Thread Della Barba, Joe via CnC-List
I have the AIS unit now. I wish I hadn’t been so quick to ship the old one, I
would like to see it work and apparently I have no shore station in reach of my
location at the dock. All the lights are good, the diagnostics are all good,
and it says it is transmitting. I guess I have to get out from behind the
buildings and out in the Bay to actually see myself online.
Another question has come up. I just got an old Gen 2 IPad I am going to try
along with my other toys. It is the Wi-Fi version, no GPS built in. So I
ordered a NMEA>WIFI bridge from FleaBay that should allow this, and my phone,
to get the GPS and AIS data. Two questions:

1. Has anyone used the Navionics app with Wi-Fi data like this? The app
itself isn’t real helpful, it basically says connect your device and it will
work. Well thanks for that tip!

2. Anyone have Navionics on more than one device? When I got the IPad on
my account I have every single app ready to port over that I have on the phone
including Navionics Hiking, but NOT the Navionics marine navigation app? Is
this some Apple malfunction or is Navionics trying to get paid twice? If I have
to buy it again, I can get INAV-X for about half the price.

Thanks

Joe:
I have an AIT2000 and Raymarine C80 MFD. The AIS out goes to the C80 NMEA 0183
in and the AIS in goes to the C80 out. Since I have a separate GPS, that
connects to my VHF for the DSC connection. I use a separate VHF antenna for
the AIS, and it can be used as a VHF antenna in case I ever lose my mast. I
had difficulty connecting the AIS to my laptop (something to do with the
software I'm using), so I connected my GPS to the laptop as well as to the
VHF/DSC connections.

the first thing I am trying to figure is the DSC-in signals. The VHF has a
DSC-out and apparently the new AIS does too, but it does not seem to be
documented. The manual mentions once receiver switches back and forth between
DSC and AIS, but does not mention what sentences it sends out or on what
outputs. My initial plan is to have the VHF DSC out go to the AIS NMEA in and
then it can combine DSC messages it hears with whatever the AIS picks up. I am
planning for now for the AIS to provide data for the nav computer and VHF, the
cockpit plotter will get the AIS info from the AIS and GPS data either from its
own receiver or the AIS unit, and the APRS will have its own low power GPS so I
can turn everything off but APRS when I am not on the boat. More to follow, but
that is plan so far. One frustration is for some reason the CP180 plotter will
NOT take a GPS fix on any input but 4800 baud port 3, so even though the AIS
will send all the GPS data along with AIS on 38K baud, the plotter won’t read
the GPS sentences at that speed on ports 1 or 2. OpenCPN has no such
restriction, so one connection will do for that.

Re: Stus-List diesel additive

2017-11-06 Thread Della Barba, Joe via CnC-List
FYI - Biobor kills algae, which is good if you don’t have any yet. If you have
it already and it is sticking to the tank walls, once it dies it might get
loose and clog your filters.
I wouldn’t try this with a modern diesel, but in really cold weather I added
about ½ gallon of gasoline per tank to my old Mercedes 300D and it seemed to do
the trick to prevent gelling. One of my friends for a joke dumped a bottle of
scented lamp oil in the fuel. It failed, the car still was stinky as ever.

* trivia fact, turbine and diesel airplanes would have better range on diesel,
but it will gel in the cold at high altitudes, so mostly they run on kerosene.

Try rubbing it off with vinegar on a well soaked rag, if the silicone is cured
it should come off...worked on my acrylic bathtub!
