Stus-List Offer on Pegasus.

2017-11-10 Thread svpegasus38 via CnC-List
Finally got an offer on Pegasus. I hope I am not jumping the gun on this.  She
is hopefully going to a younger couple, who are new to boating. I am sure they
will be lurking around on the list asking tons of questions. Help them out, as
I know everyone will. I have offered tech support, because who knows a boat
better than the previous owner.

Stus-List Navigatrix Navigation Software

2017-11-10 Thread Ian Matthew via CnC-List
Hi Everyone,

I am going to participate in the 2018 Pacific Cup (San Francisco to
Kaneohe, Oahu) and my job will be as navigator.

Before I spend megabucks on the Expedition software, I thought I would try
the share-ware Navigatrix package which is based on OpenCPN. It has
everything but as with most 'share ware', the user documentation is a bit
lacking!

I am trying to get the routing part to work and have successfully
downloaded gribs and have also a set of polars for the Cal 40. (That is
the boat we are going to race in.)

Does anyone have experience with Navigatrix and is willing to help me get
started with the routing plug-in. When I compute the route, it comes up
with Polars-error and nothing else. I got the polars from a Cal 40 friend
and they work in Expedition,. I have also tried polars that come with
Navigatrix - all to no avail. So help would be muchly appreciated!

If anyone is interested - http://www.navigatrix.net/

Thanks everyone.

Re: Stus-List Anchor advice - Rocna or Mantus

2017-11-10 Thread David Knecht via CnC-List
I had a Lewmar Delta on my previous boat and a Rocna on the current one. Both
worked great in all situations I used it. The thing I don’t like about the
Rocna is that it will not fit between the pulpit tubes, so you cannot easily
take it off and store it in the locker up front and leave the chain connected.
That was easy to do with the Lewmar because it did not have the huge roll bar.
You might want to think about that before choosing. Dave

Re: Stus-List Mooring Rights -- Any "Sea Lawyers" on the List?

2017-11-10 Thread Edward Levert via CnC-List
Following Hurricane Katrina, perhaps a dozen boats that survived were abandoned
in the city run marina. Boats that only needed sails put back on to be usable.
Pearsons, Rangers, Columbias , etc. The city’s solution as to what to do with
them? Simple. Just let them sink in the slips. There they sit waiting for the
harbor reconstruction to begin so they can be raised and scrapped. Too novel
for the city to seize and sell them. 12+ years after the storm we are still
waiting for work to start. I think the hold up now is infighting over who
receives the most kickbacks out of reconstruction.

Re: Stus-List Mooring Rights -- Any "Sea Lawyers" on the List?

2017-11-10 Thread Don Wagner via CnC-List
We had an abandoned derelict boat in our area for a long time. Neighbors,
Community Associations, DNR police, etc were unable or unwilling to get rid of
it. No one could decide on whose responsibility it was, or what laws applied.
There was quite a bit of discontent. Eventually some one decided that they
would cut it loose, and tie it to an official navigational buoy. I suspect that
it was done in the middle of a moonless night It was reported to the USCG, and
within a day or two they removed it and it was never seen again!

Something about it being illegal to tie up to a navigational buoy, I suppose.

Sounds like an abandoned vessel to me. It is common in Florida for people with
decrepit boats in the water to simply anchor them and row away to avoid paying
salvage costs. Of course, they scrape off all identifying numbers.

Is there an anchorage nearby? Any tackle onboard? I’ve heard of people moving
abandoned boats after being frustrated by the unwillingness of the authorities
to deal with the problem. Maybe you use an old Danforth from your garage with
some rusty chain and 100 feet of scrap rode.

Edd, I hate to say it but you’re involved in a bucket of s … well, let’s say a
can of worms.

Some states have abandoned and derelict boat laws, most don’t seem to. And
local laws are sometimes conflicting and hard to find. (For example, the local
regulations in New Bern, NC are part of the local zoning code and Oriental, NC
– where there are more sailboats than people – has no regulation at all.) I
wouldn’t expect too much from the USCG because they seem to be pretty
disinterested unless the offending boat is a hazard to navigation. I’m rapidly
gaining expertise on this because of growing problems we’re having in the
harbor an Washington, NC, where I manage the municipal marina.

In North Carolina you can send a registered letter to the last owner of record
for the offending boat. If he doesn’t claim the letter in 30 days, or if he
gets the letter but does nothing, you can go to the State and apply for title
to the vessel, which takes another couple of weeks. Then you can move, sell,
dispose of, or scrap the boat because it is yours.

I’d start by contacting the state agency that handles registration of boats in
the state where the boat is currently. They can tell you what your options are.

Re: Stus-List Diesel tank hoses

2017-11-10 Thread coltrek via CnC-List

I have a roll of quarter inch fuel hose from Parker Hannifin, that says u.s.
Coast Guard approved. It is blue . And Joe is right, it is very thick and
heavy. You could use it as a backstay on a 50-footer. It has braided stainless
steel spring wire in it, and it is a royal bitch to cut, even with a bandsaw.
If my boat caught on fire, that would be the last thing left.

Non-marine hose may well work to keep fuel inside of itself, but auto hose in
general isn’t even close to the fire resistance of marine hose. Airplane hoses
have fire-sleeves over them and marine hose is about
3-4 times as thick as it needs to be so there is a lot of rubber to burn away
before it would have a hole in it. Auto hose has neither.

Well, you should be using only SAE fuel hose. And the specs are the same
regardless of the manufacturer. So use whatever is less expensive.

You might even get a price on hose – probably Gates Rubber – from your local
NAPA store. Since it’s not “Boat Hose” it’s probably significantly less than
either WM or Defender.

Removed my OEM aluminum diesel tank now 35 years old.  Exterior looks great but
interior shows a number of corrosion issues.  Had to remove fittings and saw
off the inlet fitting to get the tank out of the locker so was committed when I
did that to getting a new tank.  That said, the hidden corrosion on the
interior tells me an incident was in the making so replacing now is a good idea.

Have replacement aluminum tank made by Luther’s in Bristol RI who by all
accounts are the “go to” source for a tank made right in all respects.  Not the
least expensive by any stretch but by far the best value or so they say
J

Question is replacing the hoses.  West carries the Shields brand, Defender the
Trident at a cost differential of some 20% less in price.  Specifications are
essentially identical.  Any reason to not embrace the lower price??
