And make sure you lubricate the pump regularly (6-12 month) with a decent
Teflon grease (Superlube).

I've had a Jabsco Twist & Lock on Touche' since Jabsco introduced them. Couple
weeks ago I saw a little back leakage. I keep a spare joker valve on board. 5
minutes to swap it out. Took the scaled up one to the house. Soaked it in
vinegar for 2 days then wiped the scale off. It's now the spare.

After working in the marine repair business for 15 years and
repairing/rebuilding more heads than I care to remember, my opinion is the
Raritan PHII is the best head and the Jabsco Twist and Lock a close second.

Remember, when repairing a head, it's cheaper (timewise), easier and better to
replace the pump assembly than to install a rebuild kit.

The MMSI is more than that. It is assigned to your radio and it is included in
any DSC call you make, including any emergency call a DSC radio can make
automatically ( that call would include your position).

Yes I can get an MMSI number for free from the Canadian government but it just
gives me a number I can use/say over the air... I guess in an emergency they
can use it to look up my vessel data, etc. and save a lot of questions in a
crisis - they will probably ask those questions regardless.

Stus-List Head Problems

2018-08-15 Thread Tom Buscaglia via CnC-List
We’ve been out for a few weeks now on our summer cruise and our Raritan PHII
stopped allowing incoming raw water into the bowl. I got online and downloaded
the exploded drawings and since the waste a.m. side was working oki felt
confident that it was not the primary diaphragm since it handle water in and
waste out. The through hull wax clear and there was water getting to the pump.
So, it looked like the ball valve was the issue. I took it apart and it was
fine.

Feeling a fit defeated a kind of gave up. A bowl of fresh water was all it
needed to flush. No biggie. When I got to the Rendezvous and talked about it
with a few Daves, I realized that it could also be the outgoing ball valve not
allowing the pump to create a vacuum to draw the water into it.

I got into the exit ball valve and it appears that over time the call had
gotten imbedded in the spring and the spring was preventing the valve from
sealing. I flipped the spring over and it now is good as new!

Other issues have not gone as well... but that’s another story.

Hope everyone is enjoying summer and their C

Those are pretty good optics, but once while on a business trip to Toronto I

laughed so hard I thought she was going to fall off her chair, and the woman I

The Canadian Government dispensed with call signs for private boats some time
ago. MMSI is not a call sign. It is an identifier for the government rescue
authorities in the event you use the auto DSC feature on your VHF in an
emergency when you cannot make a mayday call yourself.
In normal communications boat-to-boat or to coast guard use your boat name to
id yourself.

Re: Stus-List Should I ditch the SSB

2018-08-15 Thread Dan via CnC-List
I did some digging and found the answer - In Canada we no longer need a
call-sign unless it's a licensed (commercial) vessel... WILD... hovever I
know that when I leave North America things are different so I'll need to
get a license if I cross oceans:

Industry Canada will no longer be issuing radio licences for ships or
vessels which meet the exemption criteria; therefore a call sign will no
longer be assigned to these stations.

If I was previously issued a call sign, but now meet the exemption
criteria, can I continue to use my old call sign?

In accordance with the technical requirements for the operation of mobile
stations in the maritime service as described in RBR-2, an exempted ship
station must identify by using the name of the ship. The call sign
previously issued to a ship station, now exempt from the requirement to
hold a radio licence, is no longer valid and should not be used as a means
of identification.

If call signs are not being issued, what should I use to identify myself
when I use the radio on board my vessel?

In accordance with the technical requirements for the operation of mobile
stations in the maritime service as described in RBR-2, an exempted ship
station must identify by using the name of the ship. If desired, the
operator may include additional words or characters, along with the name of
the ship, for identification purposes.

In the US all that's required is a valid Ship Station license and a lifetime
Restricted Radiotelephone Operator's permit. No testing required! The Ship
Station license is good for 10 years and is non-transferable. If you want to
use the ham bands in US or Canada you have to pass an exam. More info is
available on the ARRL website. You have to see if your radio will operate on
the ham bands. Jerry

Be sure to get the SWR checked on the rig/antenna. If the SWR is too high, you

Re: Stus-List Galvanic corrosion

2018-08-15 Thread Matthew L. Wolford via CnC-List
I did (do) not understand it, either; and my bottom paint is not copper-based.
The closest electrical appliance is the toilet a couple feet away (but that’s
another thread). I figured maybe there was something going on in my marina
slip due to nearby boats or other potential sources.

What I do know is that my previous bronze thru-hull was disintegrating without
a ground wire, and the replacement bronze thru-hull appears to be doing fine
with a ground wire. If the ground wire had not already been sitting there
(installed at manufacture or by a PO), I’m not sure this solution would have
even occurred to me.

Possible ideas:

1. Copper in bottom paint is conducting enough to cause issues.

2. There is current in the bilge water that is carrying through to the
thru-hull.

3. It is/was a crap alloy.

So I re-connected the SSB to the backstay and switched it on. I was able to
pick up a guy talking in Norway :)
I have an old analogue pre-DSC radio which pre-dates MMSI numbers so no
station ID has been programmed in or anything like that so I can probably
just use the HF function for calling (I have VHF/MF/HF certification within
can/us) and I can receive marine weather reports off-shore.

What do you use for a station ID/callsign if you don't have an MMSI number?
- in Canada for VHF we just use our Boat's name unless you have an MMSI or
you're a licensed vessel (commercial). Can I just use my vessel name?

Joe,
It is the stray electric current through the water which can be caused by
metals on other boat in the vicinity or poor grounds on shore power in a

I want to put in a plug for the new Jabsco Twist-n-Lock manual head I
installed this year. After 3 years of "encore" reappearances of tank
contents under way, and no improvement by replacing joker valves several
times a season, I was ready to try any solution under a million dollars!
Happily, the Twist-n-Lock was well under $200 at the Boat Show (not to
mention the priceless optics of my wife and I lugging a toilet around for
all to see).

We just completed an 800 nm trip around Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, and I
can report there was not one unseemly encore, no enduring smell in the head,
and no aromas in the captain's quarters either. What a difference this made
for everyone aboard.

Damn, Gary — you must be dropping some industrial-size waste in there! :-)

I’ve had the same electric Jabsco pump on my head since 2006 and no issues. It
is noisy though.

Over the winter, I’m going to replace the entire head with a Jabsco Lite Flush
Electric — see:
https://www.jabscoshop.com/marine/marine-toilets/toilets/electric-toilets/58500-1012-lite-flush-12v-with-panel.htm

It’s quiet, looks great, has a slow-close lid and, best of all, uses the same
mounting as the existing Jabsco head. The earlier versions of the toilet had
some issues with the pumps and power, but they have fixed that issue.

In the meantime, maybe add some prune juice to your diet?

All the best,

Edd

Re: Stus-List Head Problems

2018-08-15 Thread Bruce Whitmore via CnC-List
Does it HAVE to be electric?  On our last boat, we converted the hand pump base
from Jabsco to Raritan.  They can be difficult to find, but Raritan makes a
pump-only base/kit that uses the existing bowl, and (at least at the time) was
about half the price of a new one, and was less than $200.  The reason I raise
this is the Raritan pump seemed much more efficient at flushing and overall did
a much better job.
My unit in Chicago lasted more that 5 years before it needed an overhaul, and
that was a pretty easy process.  By comparison, our Jabsco that is in our new
(to us) 1994 C 37/40+ is just not very good at getting the effluent up and
over the top of the loop in the hose.
As a result I will convert our Jabsco to a Raritan the next time I really need
an overhaul.
Now if I could only figure out where I got the base without the bowl...  I know
that it was originally recommended by Peggy Hall the Headmistress. Bruce

2018-08-15 Thread Matthew L. Wolford via CnC-List
I was going to replace with Marlon but elected to not do so for two reasons: 1)
they are not as robust as bronze thru-hulls as you noted; and 2) unlike the
Marlon thru-hulls I considered, the replacement bronze thru-hull was identical
in size so the flange fit perfectly in the existing cavity in the hull surface.
It was a remarkably easy repair (for a change).

I never did determine the source of electric current which caused the thru-hull
to erode. In any event, re-installing the ground wire appears to have resolved
the issue.

Now you’re really spinning my head.

This would lead you to believe you should use Marlon, but I absolutely hate
those thru hulls. I have another boat with them, and I expect they are going to
break when I turn the valves, and one is actually leaking around a point where
it necks down, leading me to believe it is about to break.

I will stick with Bronze. Or SS.

Stus-List Head Problems

I just had the electric pump on my Jabsco head fail again. The last pump
lasted less than two years. At $230 / pump I need another solution. This
particular head is VERY loud. Does anyone have a better and recommendation
for a quieter electric head?

Not so fast, Bill. I replaced a bronze thru-hull when doing extensive core
repair about six years ago. There was a ground wire connected to the original
thru-hull that we did not re-connect. About two years ago, I discovered that
the thru-hull had been substantially eaten away. The flange on the outside was
about half gone and greenish-blue in color. I replaced the thru-hull with an
identical bronze unit and re-connected the ground wire. Haven’t had a problem
since.

Well, Joe, you have just thrown some weight to a very weighty question in my
head.

I have read where these thru hulls are to be grounded, and then I read where
you shouldn’t , so I think over the years some I have re-done some grounds,
then I read the other way, and I don’t connect them, so half mine are grounded,
and the other half are not, just because I don’t know what to do!

Are a couple drinks a day good for you, or bad for you?

Depends on the latest study you read!

So, I am going with you, no grounds on any thru-hulls!

Thanks for clearing my head. (At least until I read another article.)

I am still not clear on how the voltage is being measured and between what
points.

I have bronze thru-hulls that are not wired to anything. If I measured between
them and the lead keel or the engine with the stainless shaft, I am sure I
would read a voltage, they are dissimilar metals in salt water. Absent me
wiring up the voltmeter, the thru-hulls have no connection to anything else and
would not corrode. If you do have all these thru-hulls wired to ground, as is
done on some boats, you now have a battery. You need to be sure there is a zinc
involved in there somewhere and it had better have a good connection so that
the zinc is the part of the battery corroding.

IMHO and also the article referenced in another post, I like to make sure my
seacocks and thru-hulls are NOT grounded. This eliminates the issue of poor
contact to zincs and prevents the boat wiring from being a path for leakage
between boats on one side of you and boats on the other, which is something a
zinc will have a hard time saving you from.

You could try reading current with your multimeter instead of voltage. Small
stray voltages

likely exist when measuring between lead and SS even in fresh water but I doubt
they will

sustain much current.

Just as an example of magnitude very roughly if there was a current of 1 amp
continuously

in normal soil it would corrode about 20 lbs of steel in a year.

If you are reading less than 0.5 milliamp I would say those two surfaces are
not going to have

much corrosion between them. If you are seeing over a milliamp then there is an
issue.

The circuit requires two paths, the dissimilar metals in water and then
something on the boat

connecting them together. Some advice has been to connect the mast, standing
rigging and

keel together but do not ground them to the boats electrical system. That may
be difficult

if items like the VHF antenna is mounted to a metal bracket on the mast. You
can test for

this by measuring the resistance between the mast and ship's ground. Anything
under

10 ohms would indicate a connection.

Since you are in fresh water, use aluminum anodes, not zinc.

Is your ground bus, behind the electrical panel, connected to the engine. All
of your instruments should have their negative leads going to the electrical
panel ground bus. Then the ground bus should be connected to the engine block.
