Re: Stus-List Composting head in 33-2?

2018-09-30 Thread Dave. via CnC-List
This info is great. We measured the head compartment and the airhead unit would
fit. Just. Our biggest concerns are where to locate the vent and how to deal
with the 24/7 need for electricity. How did you guys deal with these issues?
SLY has no anchor locker in which to lead the vent nor shore power to support
24/7 electrical consumption. A solar panel might work but here in the northwest
we see precious little sun in the winter. And we are concerned that a deck led
vent would allow water intrusion in rough weather. Thoughts?
Thanks again.
Dave.

2018-09-30 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
I have 3 of the 4" Marinco day/night vents installed on Imzadi, and will
probably install a 4th one the next time that West Marine has them on sale
for $99. One of the vents is in the hatch over the table in the main cabin,
the other two replaced the dorade boxes and cowl vents over the head and the
passage into the V berth. Two of the vents are set to bring air in, one is
exhaust.

Last winter was the first year that I had no problem with mold or mildew on
the teak, so I'm happy with the active ventilation. Dorades and cowl vents
really only work when the wind is significant, and th e head of the boat
stays into the wind. Very little airflow when the boat is in a slip and not
pointing into the wind.

Plus lines don't get caught on the powered dome vents and flip them into the
ocean.

Have been contemplating better ventilating my 33-2.
One option is to add a day and night vent in either cabin or both.
Another is to do as the CS36 does, and that is to add a cowl vent to the
anchor locker hatch and a grill/air passage between the locker and the foot
of the v-berth. (Anchor locker functions as a dorade box, plus you get some
air movement in the anchor locker) All the recent talk of lost cowl vents
makes me think that dome vents would be preferred.
Any thoughts on cabin ventilation?
Any experience with latest nicro/Marino or vetus UFO vents, solar or
passive?
Many thanks!

The next two digits are the model (usually the length), the next three

Re: Stus-List Ventilation -vetus?

2018-09-30 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
The latest version of the Nicro / Marinco day/night solar vent works well.
Touche' has one in the head. However, the vertical sides ware subject to
catching lines. There was a discussion a few months ago about them. If
you mount them in place of a dorade on the raised section and the edge of
the vent hangs over, there is a real potential for a line to catch it and
fling it overboard.

As for supplemental dehumidification, if you're on shore power, I highly
recommend a Caframo air dryer with fan. West Marine sells it under the
West Marine brand (Model # 7867518).

I use one year round and add a second one in the fall/winter. Keeps the
interior above the dew point and greatly reduces the potential for
condensation.

Caframo also sells a version without the fan for slightly less.

Stus-List Prop shaft zincs, bonding and corrosion

2018-09-30 Thread Chris Hobson via CnC-List
I seem to be burning through zincs on my prop shaft, replace them at least
twice or more in a season. I posted a photo previously in the group of a shaft
brush (https://drive.google.com/drive/u/1/my-drive) someone helped me figure
out what it was. Currently the wire on it leads nowhere which got my started on
this goose chase, researching shaft brush’s and bonding systems.

Anyway my question is should I be connecting the wire coming from this shaft
brush to a DC ground? Or will that simply connect the stray current from the
dissimilar metals (bronze prop, steel shaft) outside of the boat, to the engine
“earth” and start to corrode the engine?

I’ve got AC shore power but had a Galvanic Isolator installed, so I’m not sure
where the stray current is coming from or what is eating through these zincs so
quickly. If anyone has any ideas or has had a similar experience with burning
through zincs or bonding systems, and found a solution (other than changing
zincs more frequently) please let me know!

Re: Stus-List C&C 25 II - core replacement

2018-09-30 Thread Stephen Kidd via CnC-List
Hello list,

We're three days into a minor refurbishing. Compounding out many years of
oxidation (the boat is older than I am, to be fair), fixing some dock rash,
and recoring the cockpit bench at the cabin entrance. I'm sure there is a
boat word for that. At any rate, the instructions and insights garnered
from this list have been very helpful.

I had about 1 sq foot of rotten, soggy balsa, the surrounding area was damp
for about another 3-5 inches out. There was a stick on non-slip pad
covering a full on crack. My skepticism of stickers is confirmed. I removed
about 5 sq ft in the end, taking out at least a few inches of still good
balsa. That balsa is amazing, and I do wish I had bought a chisel. I put a
nice barrier of thickened epoxy around the remaining balsa to insulate it
from my novice repair.

All said, it's just waiting for the paint and I can step on it without fear
for the first time since taking ownership. And it's level (well, very
slight slope away from the cabin). Pricey, and I have more power tools
than an apartment dweller should, but so very satisfying. I'm happy I gave
it a go!

All the best,
Stephen

I live in Costa Rica and mold is a always an issue. I have great luck using
an Ozone Generator. It cost about $40 on Ebay and I used it the of this
entirety of this rainy season. About once a week, I run it for about 30
minutes. I put it in different places on the boat each time to help
distribute the ozone. It It is said that ozone is damaging to plastic and
rubber but I have seen no perceptible destruction. There is a spray liquid
called Hapric that is sold down here. I don't know if it is available in
the states but it removes mold/mildew instantly. You need gloves and a mask
to use it.

Re: Stus-List Composting head in 33-2?

2018-09-30 Thread Robert Boyer via CnC-List
We have had a composting head (Air Head) for several years now and love it. It
sits a little higher than a standard toilet but we got used to it. We live
aboard and go south every winter and we have to empty the solids container
every 3 weeks (2 people). As I recall, composting requires a temp of at least
55 degrees F which is not a problem for us but could be for some people who
keep their boats in cold weather. I have more info on my blog...

I have an Evadry dehumidifier that has run more or less constantly for three

need to run small heaters in the winter to prevent the dehumidifier from

runs the fan all nightworks great to keep the air in the boat

Two quick thoughts. Anchor lockers and their rode pick up a lot of stuff and
can smell. Anchor lockers have been known to flood in a seaway. The vent
between cabin and locker may allow fumes and water into cabin.
