Re: Stus-List Re chart plotter night mode

2018-10-24 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
I generally leave mine in day mode also. The AUTO mode shifts from day to night
colors at the official time of sunset, not at the end of nautical twilight, and
it is still pretty bright then and night mode is hard to see.

One controls the intensity of the display with a quick touch of the
On/Off/Light button. That pops up a display with a sliding scale for the
intensity of the light, which you adjust with the +/- buttons, then press
SELECT.

I’ve done it so many times I can do it in the dark… literally.

Day/night mode is usually selectable. The Garmin GPSMap 500/700 series can be
set to Day/Night/Auto.

Settings > System > Display > Color Mode will give you the option. I leave
mine in "Day Colors" mode and manually switch it as desired.

I might be a candidate, depending on when they expired. I have like 6 expired
flares and a couple of expired smokes on the boat… in addition to the current
Solas stuff. I might replace the VERY old ones with your NOT-so-so-very-old

When I was a kid the highlight of the summer was shooting off all the
25mm flares that were expired or close to it on 4th of July. I always
thought anyone in actual distress on the 4th would get applause for
shooting off flares, but no help LOL. WAY back in the day when we bought
a wooden ketch the previous owner apparently had access to army supplies
and had about 10-15 huge flares that were the size of a sewer pipe -
yikes! Never did find the mortar to launch them with, so not sure
what good they would have done him.

actually used a flare?  Most people don't realize the slag that comes
off a hand held flare and that you need a stand-off pipe or heavy
glove to keep from being burned. I have never fire a flair from my

There may be two display adjustments you want to look at, Colors Mode and

2018-10-24 Thread Hoyt, Mike via CnC-List
Thanks Ken

The problem is old eyes. Can see the depth numbers fine when is in daytime
mode. When it switches to nighttime just as I am skirting a shoal the depth
numbers become unreadable for me when the CP suddenly changes. Is at a place
where I really do not like to switch from chart screen to menus to start
playing … since I want to see the shoal and depth markings at that point in
time.

I will take a look at the display next time I am at the boat and see if I can
change the nighttime colours to be the same as daytime colours but dimmer. It
would be very nice if it would scale down the brightness gradually based on
light rather than on time of day.

All of this reminds me that I have to take electronics off the boat this week
anyway and also flares ….

My Garmin plotters have two different colour schemes AND two different display

Hi Fred. It's over. The mountains did the job and we really didn't see much
wind. I've seen much worse in a spontaneous squall. (I mean weather, not
drunken women.) I was really worried about surge and swell. But I've seen
bigger waves. I wouldn't call it a "non-event" but I probably could have left
the boat as it was and everything would have been fine. But for some reason I
think if I hadn't prepared then the serious sh_t would have happened.

If your 740 works similarly to my 420, there should be an option to set the
display to Day, Night, or Auto. Auto is default.

Unfortunately, I cannot verify this as the boat is winterized (batteries off,
chartplotter at home).

My Garmin plotters have two different colour schemes AND two different display
brightness settings, one colour and brightness for day, and the other for
night. It switches automatically between these settings at sun set / sunrise.
