Re: Stus-List Rudder maintenance

2019-08-19 Thread Tom Buscaglia via CnC-List
I was able to stop my rudder chirping by flushing out the under side of the
quadrant with fresh water and then shooting in some saillube. But is sounds
like you have a more significant issue that some crud between the plate and the
bearings.

It’s could be a result of the below deck install not reinforcing the rudder
shaft causing the rudder type to flex thereby creating extra resistance. Josh
has some great pictures of his install and the reinforcement of the rudder post
is substantial.

I plan on going below deck with mine since the new and improved Raymarine pilot
does not like an under power drive, at all.

Good luck!

Hi Guys,
Sorry for this last minute commit. I live in New Jersey and keep my boat in
idyllic Magothy River but presently on the hard in Pasadena, Md at Oak Harbor
near Baltimore. I'm redoing my decks so not sure if I will bring the boat, but
that's what I'm working toward. Anyway, I just wrote the rendezvous onto my
calendar and suggest any future correspondence include Oct 19th in the subject
line as it was hard to find the date. My boat has no dodger or bimini for rainy
day gatherings, but Resolute would like to provide iced coolers of local craft
beer at any events planned. Our way of supporting the event.

I got word from Higgins they should be able to accommodate ~6 boats. We had 5
official boats in the reserved slips at Annapolis last year plus S/V Rainy Days
who stayed separate. When I attended the 2017 N.E. Rendezvous there were 5
boats with a late breaking cancelation. So 6 feels good as an unofficial
count. I need to move fast to make the reservation. As I was warned St.
Mike's does lots of festivals and that weekend turns out to be one of their
biggest.

As Gary stated before, Higgins is not a "Marina" it is a boat yard. The cost
is very reasonable but amenities like pool and restaurant are not available the
bathrooms are sparse. My favorite thing about Higgins is the location. It is
perfectly located in the center of town. Such an easy walk everywhere.

This is the make or break day on whether we keep the venue at St. Michael's or
change to a different venue.

PLEASE RSVP TODAY SO THAT I CAN MAKE THE FINAL DECISION AND DOCKAGE RESERVATION!

Re: Stus-List Rudder maintenance

2019-08-19 Thread CHARLES SCHEAFFER via CnC-List
Charlie,

I will send a more detailed email later but grease fittings would make a nice
upgrade since our boats' rudders have a stainless shaft riding in delrin
bearings glassed in a fiberglass tube. Something is wearing; the delrin or the
stainless. Grease can fill the gap and provide great relief reducing all
friction and wearing. A temporary fix would be any lubricant that works with
plastic bearings and stainless: Harkin MacLube.

At a minimum; schedule the yard to drop the rudder to check for wear at the
shaft and bearings. Seal the joint where the SS shaft enters the fiberglass
rudder with a flexible waterproof epoxy. Drill the bearings to add grease
fittings that can be used to pump grease into the wearing surfaces. Your Edson
pulley plate under the pedestal is probably close to the end of it's service
life and needing to be replaced. The newer Edson design doesn't fit our boats
but Garhauer c an probably build a better one. The steering chain and cable is
due also.

Stus-List Rudder maintenance

2019-08-19 Thread Charlie Nelson via CnC-List
Hello all;
The rudder on my 1995 C XL/kcb has started 'squeaking' a little and my
recently installed hydraulic auto-pilot motor has sent motor overload messages
via the controller. Many years ago, I had a wheel pilot (since deceased) that
worked well but I have hand-steered for the last 15 years or so.
While these issues may not be related, I figure I should have the rudder
'serviced' by the yard--I prefer to have pros do any work that involves really
important stuff--rigging, rudder, etc.
My rudder seems to ride on at least a pair of bearings that rotate with the
rudder on top of a plate of some kind--whatever else is involved is unknown to
me.
My questions for the list:
Is there something specific that I should point the yard to look for other than
inspect the rudder mechanism and replace/repair/grease as necessary? I'd prefer
not to send them on an fishing expedition looking for problems that don't
exist! OTOH while she is on the hard, now is the time to do anything required.
Should I have them install zerc grease fittings somewhere assuming there are
none there currently so that it can be greased regularly in the future?
AFAIK the mechanics of the rudder have never been serviced, aside from ensuring
that when the boat is on the hard rotating the rudder by hand to confirm that
the wheel turns is possible nor have I ever had any problems with it.
Any suggestions would be welcome--this is probably the only 'system' on the
boat that has not (obviously) needed any work since she was new.
Thanks,

Re: Stus-List [EXTERNAL] Re: Any Mid-Atlantic rendezvous planned

2019-08-19 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
Gary, I have previously envisioned pavilions, music, sponsors, vendors,
demonstrations, races, and tours. What I have experienced in reality
thought is that people really just enjoy getting together and hanging out.
Most of us are casual cruisers and enjoy an excuse to cruise to a location
and hang out with other boaters. No one wants to over-commit as people
still enjoy their own private space and adventures.

- Group trips to local restaurants are well received.

- There are a few distilleries that I'm thinking about setting up for a
tour.

- I figure the museum is going to be a nice visit.

- For meals people do pretty well with pot luck and we all move between
different host boats. Last year was kinda rainy so Bob Boyer's full
enclosure and Brian Fry's full bimini/dodger both came in handy.

I'll probably be arriving on the 17th and staying through the 21st.
Everyone is welcome to come and stay as long or as short as they desire. I
imagine that the "biggest festival of the year" will draw people away from
visiting and rendezvousing as much during the day on Saturday and Sunday
but Friday and Monday will be nice bookend to a busy and eventful weekend.
If course the Annapolis boat show is the preceding weekend too.

I’ll have to walk the block over there… Thanks. What do you think about
somewhere to meet/greet. We could do something at the museum, but would have to
bring the food/drink or get a catering outfit. Higgins has picnic tables, or
reservations could be made for a group at one of the restaurants. What has
worked before?
