So, We sold Rum Runner IV and we're going to start the process for our next boat.
I'm not really sure who said that selling a boat is typically a happy day for a boater.  This is our 3rd sailboat sold, and we've been sad to see each of them go.
We'd been discussing going to something a bit more modern, with more room.  So, as the boat was in really great condition, I thought I would list it and see if anyone was interested.
I've bee eyeing center cockpit designs.  Some of our desired features are,
about 45 - 50 feet,
at least a sugar scoop transom if not walk thru,
larger cockpit (as most of our time, on board, is spent there)
lighter, brighter interior,
a good sized head with separate shower
a nice master suite with an island berth

Anyway, if anyone knows of any vessels we might want to check out, let me know!

2022-07-30 Thread DJ via CnC-List
Hi Dwight, Are you plugged in to shore power?   I usually get about 5 to 7 years out of flooded batteries.   I switched to trojan T105s last year.   I wanted to go with the firefly batteries but they won't fit.  I did get a pretty robust solar system set up at the same time as the new batteries so, I'm expecting the batteries will be happier.  I beat the heck out of the last one's.  They came with the boat, were not real deep cycle and the boat lives in a mooring.  So those only got charged from the engine.  Which doesn't really get that much use.  Now, i show up to fully charged batteries, and the solar charger on float, every time!  I don't really run anything when we're not on the boat.  It would be great to run the fridge full time but, I'm not comfortable enough for that yet.  DannyOn Jul 29, 2022 5:03 PM, dwight veinot via CnC-List wrote:Joe. Zephyrwerks is an excellent source for custom-made sheaves if you cannot find something off the shelf that fits.  I had three masthead sheaves made since we lowered my mast about a month ago.  Ed (the owner) suggested replacing the worn
pins as well, so he made a set (including welding the C&C plate on the end).  The new sheaves and pins are already back on the mast and ready to go for next year.  Very professional; very prompt.

We don't really have any of those clubs, I hear about in Canada, around these parts.  Most boatyards here see boat owners as 'marks' and try to squeeze as much of the boat owners money as they can get.  I was paying over $900 to haul, unstep/step the mast, and move the boat a couple miles to and from the storage yard, each way.  That's for a 40 foot boat with about 50 foot stick. Not all boat yards are run this way.  I can think of 2 right now that were good experiences but neither of them can handle my boat.  One will only take boats up 34 feet and the other did not want to mess with the track of the Sheafer boom furling system that ran up the mast. Most other yards make me want to sell my boat and give up on boating until i retire...DannyOn Oct 1, 2021 11:10 PM, Marek Dziedzic via CnC-List wrote:

Same here (NSC in Ottawa). If you do it yourself, it cost you nothing; you just need a few friends to help. If you hire a local “service provider”, they will do it for about $100. I use them for
the haul-out and unstepping in the fall, or for launching and stepping in the spring and the total cost is around $200-$300 (depending on the size of the boat). Our spar crane can handle most of the masts, though the Club limits the boat size to 36’ (so the
masts are also limited in size). I think our spar crane can handle 500 kg max.

We have a spar crane at our club that is no charge to members.  We get a group of owners together to do our own

If we pay someone it is under $500 each way for  boat such as the 35.  I suspect that you may need to hire a boom truck, etc as part of your mast down and put it back up

As part of a quote for potentially painting the topsides, we were given a cost for the local rigger to take the mast out and put it back in. I thought $1500 was a little steep, but I haven't done this since
we had our 29-2, so maybe prices have gone up by 10X in the interim. I'm curious as to what kind of costs folks are incurring on their mast work just to see if this is reasonable. I also recently got a quote for $4500 which then ballooned to $9000 and counting
to replace our rod rigging with wire. Does this sound at all in the ballpark?

Stus-List Re: Bow Repair

2021-09-25 Thread DJ via CnC-List
I had a new push pit and stem head fitting fabricated by white water marine.  They produced the original fittings and still had drawings.  They produced a new double roller for me, custom designed to accept my new mantus anchor.  I am more than pleased with results as well as the process. Let me know if you're interested in contact info.DannyOn Sep 25, 2021 12:46 PM, Nathan Post via CnC-List wrote:Hi Brian,My C&C34 bow fitting replacement is shown in photos here:https://photos.app.goo.gl/Sd5YJg8rJ5GwGZ8M7I got the general concept from the Johanna Rose blog http://svjohannarose.blogspot.com/2018/06/stemhead-replacement.html but wanted to keep it lighter (using aluminum rather than stainless steel) and needed to design around the different features of the C&C34 bow.It is designed to use a Mantis roller and I extended the bow a little to provide a tack point for the asymmetrical spin.  I created the design myself in Onshape https://cad.onshape.com/documents/87319ac0373461e07d9c3465/w/8092d805cb5db461fce8cc09/e/94229b4df81f5f30af53d096 using measurements and a wood moc up and then had Xometry build it for me including welding and heavy duty black anodizing.  It didn't fit perfectly and I had to add a stainless steel spacer in front of it so some small adjustments to the design might be a good idea if you are going to have another one fabricated.Since I designed the bottom to be flat for easier fabrication, I had to fill the deck with thickened epoxy to create a flat mounting surface.  I was concerned about the added bending moments from the anchor so I extended it back about 8 inches compared to the original and cut the toe rails accordingly.  That also gave me room to move the chalks back behind the forward pulpit legs. I also added an additional 1/4" G10 backing plate bonded under the existing plywood backing plate underneath it. Fabrication was ~$2800 and then the stainless steel chalks (Schaefer XCL Model 60-50) and roller assembly it was closer to a $3500 upgrade all told.  Probably not the most economical approach in the end and definitely a lot of work although I do like how it came out. I did this as part of a full deck repair/repaint/refit project in spring of 2000.Having an anchor all the way out on the bow does weigh the bow down a bit - I ended up moving my spare anchor out into the aft lazarette to compensate.  Having the roller definitely makes launching and retrieving the anchor a lot easier!Let me know if you have any questions.Nathan

Stus-List Re: New Foresail.

2021-07-10 Thread DJ via CnC-List
Yea, it can be quite a task getting pricing from the various sources.   I've done it before. The first time, i used porpoise sails in Florida and got a used head sail and a new main.   I had no idea what i was doing and the prices were great. The second time,  After a lot of quotes, i ended up using a local loft.  With a boat show discount, their price was very competitive.   Not as competitive as rolly tasker though.  However, they were quantum sails.   Very nice sails! The last time i used precision sail loft.  Great pricing and very customizable with sail cloth options and added features.  I got a 135% for my 40 foot tartan for about $3300 delivered and i got the best level with all the added features like, added rows of stitching and reinforced everything!  The lowest level would have been just under $2000 IIRC.  I wouldn't hesitate to use them again.  When i Googled the loft address it showed the same address for quantum sail loft. More recently, i did some research on a main sail and got pricing from neil pryde that was very competitive.  They made my existing main sail and when I'm ready I'll probably be going with them for the new main sail.  I have the Shafer boom furling system and they already have the design on file.  That might be why the price was so good. It's really not an easy task and you should probably get into by getting a bunch of quotes and learn what the different prices represent.  Or, just get the cheapest.  I guess it depends on how much of a hurry you're in.  The boat shows are usually a good place to start.DannyOn Jul 10, 2021 11:36 PM, Dave S via CnC-List wrote:This year I  ordered a ‘performance cruising’ radial cut #2 Genoa from rolly tasker sails in Thailand - second sail from them, no regrets at all.Dave 33-2Sent from my iPhoneOn Jul 10, 2021, at 10:22 PM, Korbey Hunt via CnC-List wrote:

There were shoal keels and deep fin versions as well.

The R is the race circuit model and yes it is a fast boat.  Nice interior but no aft berth, it was a racing setup.  Mid ship berths etc?..
