Stus-List kellet for anchoring

2016-08-22 Thread Jimmy Kelly via CnC-List
have used for over 00years...makes all the difference in securing to
bottom...use 36ft 1 half inch chain then 200 ft plus 5eights 3strand
rode...open the kellet ,,put it on rope fasten sliding retreval
line..then fasten weightsusually use 15 lbd lead ball sometimes two
depending on forcasts,,,let out chain rode then 3strand part of anchor
rode until kellet about 25 to 30 ft aft of chain or further
depending on water depthuse 45lbd CQR with extra weight in tip..have
had little drag problems in winds just short of 65 knts...has kept us safe
for 48 plus years ..great lakes,us east coasts,st lawrence,pacific
coasts...biggest problem after heavy blow anchor dug in bottom & hard to
break free...tidewater 1968 redline 41 british columbia

Stus-List c 39 davits

2015-12-30 Thread Jimmy Kelly via CnC-List
added to stern was not difficult as shape of stern small but relatively
straight, most difficult was putting backing blocks between stern glass
wallafter much trying to get backing blocks located , then
mounted atkins & hoyle adjustable 3 piece davits on teak wood blocks
between davit base and stern hull..did find dinghys over 8ft could get
tied up when locking thru lock or pulling away from a dock...kept dinghy as
high as possible .as far as i know still on boat , most important
was to keep dinghy light weight and empty of water.lost track of location
of boat...probably in caribean .

Stus-List dinghy davits

2015-12-30 Thread Jimmy Kelly via CnC-List
pretty well use my dinghy similar to amenttow when in inland
watersdavits when offshore or rough seasoriginal dinghy was boston
whaler 9ft sailing ,rowing,motor...changed this few years ago to
inflatable 9ft inflatable floor model ...miss solid whaler to row but
less weight in stern makes a difference on long offshore trips, have always
used low hp outboards mounted on stern taffrail with crain for raising
my 1968 redline 41...also used atkins 3 piece
davitsworked well & still use 30yrs later..the stern on redline not
as flat as c 39 nor as large but it was lot easier to fit backing
blocks...

Stus-List aries zincs

2015-12-24 Thread Jimmy Kelly via CnC-List
by chance did you buy current used up zincs from different place than
previously? have found different zinc makers zincs... deteriorate at
different ratesfaster corroding are doing job best as far as
protection.zincs made in china seem to give least protection and in
some cases show little deterior change over as long as 3 years not
much protection best seem to be those ,,made in canada or usa,,
although cost 10 to 15 percent more ...if actually made in canada will
be marked on zinc appears you get what you pay for .

Stus-List propane heat

2015-11-05 Thread Jimmy Kelly via CnC-List
propane heat must be installed correctly and serviced and checked on a
systematic basesall this is well and good.propane detectors are a
must...oxygen monitors also now required by some insurance
companiespropane tank on aft taff rail now being also turned down for
insurance in case of offshore use.have been very close to 2 propane
explosions over the yearsone case a factory installed system exploded
killing two on board.another propane explosion gas powered yacht
set on fire and then spread to boat yard and caused major damagelucky
they were in cockpit only minor burns...first case investigation showed
lack of maintenance ...not determined in second casepropane great
fuel but must be installed correctly ...have used as cooking fuel over 40
years buy have kept stove and oven up to date ...used 3 stoves over
40 plus years last one installed 3 yrs ago...also carefully inspect whole
system beginning and end of every season to check wear and detect any

Stus-List cabin head...hard fuel

2015-11-05 Thread Jimmy Kelly via CnC-List
have used dickenson hard fuel cabin heaters for last 25 plus years.burn
well with brickets , wood scrapes , kennel coal, scrape garbage
wrappings ,pickup wood kindling while hikeing as well as beach wood
scrapes ...fireplace burns 4 to 5 hrs then more fuel needs to be
added.with a thermal fan sitting on fireplace it will operate from
heat of fireplace and circulate heat well.never not been able to find
fuel to burn even in remote regionssecret to these heaters is to
install draft controls in chimney flue...dickenson accessory also
good charlie noblehave used fireplace up to 25 knts sailing with no
back draft problems..heat is a dry heat very little fuel needs
to be carried as easy to replentish dickenson hard fuel fireplace is
mostly stainless with some brass so burning salt soaked wood doesnot
cause rusting...not true of other makes...spent 5 winters frozen in ice
living aboard in great lakes ... never failed or let us down...still use

Stus-List boat transport

2015-10-01 Thread Jimmy Kelly via CnC-List
you have got it right..andrews transport is one of best in NAused
them more than half dozen timesno problemstrailers specially
designed to give vessel a safe smooth ride...shipped macinac city to
oakville... midland to oakvilleannapolis to north carolina
virginia to n carolina norfolk to oakville ... oakville to
blaine washington... plus numerous other destinations with andrews &
other shippers a reputable hauler is what its about if dont want
any problems ...andrews over the years always top notch..highly
recommendedtheir trailers allow boat to sit low as keel fits between
trailer longitudenal stringers..thus 13 feet clearance below overpass
bridges ... with your boat beam wont need escort vehicle ...big
cost saving... just make sure nothing exceeds 13 ft from road...as for
mast wrap it with plastic wrap then tape around wrap every 2 ft.
have found taking spreaders of mast good ideaon the 41 we take off bow
pulpit so boat height reduced...may not be needed in your case...as far as
hull protection for shipping dont cover with anything only cause wear on
boat finish also dont need any greasey of other hull protection not
even waxandrews rigs do not throw up road dirt like some cheap

Stus-List watski self tailing for winches

2015-09-07 Thread Jimmy Kelly via CnC-List
have used watski self tailers since 1974 & still using today having
just replaced two recently..use on boats 923 lewmars all 4 of them
barient 18sall 6 of them...to date have worked great easy
wear on sheets no scuffing of outside covers of lines...after using for
41years i would say excellent.only NEGATIVE most sailors have
never figured how to use theminstructions on packages poor.
should say do not wrap around top area just wrap around main body
of winch many give up not ever get it right ...still most popular in
europe sailing area also allow for fine trimming sheets
especially on 35 to 65 ft yachts DEFINTELY should be considered if
you have the skill to fit them and then use themlots sailors dont
have positive view of them ...we found IDEAL PRODUCT 1968

2015-07-23 Thread Jimmy Kelly via CnC-List
very very poor is best comment , yachts they new... but ignorant when it
came to gasoline engines ..used mirex fuel tanks ..known to have capacity
sender to cause a hole to wear thru bottom of tank serious gas fuel
leaks sometimes onto water jacketed exhausts one new at the time redline
41 green hull exploded in hudson river being taken home by new owner
..total loss ...my 41 same problem mirex tank worn hole in bottom of tank
...fuel leaked onto exhaust pipe.fume detector indicated fumes shut
down engine...all 11 crew aboard at time got buckets poured lake water
in cockpit lockers ...to dilute gasopened two thru hulls fwd
allowing lake water to fill area fwdstarted pumps to pump overboard
coast guard stood by once reported gas slick notedin about 1 hour had
all under control...very close near fatal accident.did not have cc
repair but rather went to a custom metal shop and had new tanks
builtcc to my knowledge never advised other owners ...so if you
should have red or gray mirex fuel tank still, get rid of it
replace...one of the few things they were very poor at...other yacht
mfgs used mirex quite late into 80s

lake ontario ..surfed all the way in one storm. estamated a sustained plus
40 knots...only other yacht doing same thing was a cal 40...they could stay
on a wave betterlonger...great memorys..although at the time would rather
have had a good harbour of refuge...wave pattern so difficult could not
get in to rochester, colbourg, sodus ..coast guard advised ride it out to
mexico bay as front should have passedCG could not even get out of
rochester harbour as waves were breaking over both pierswas very
exciting at time but we did wonder at time if would go end over end as
waves got much shorter steep as got into shallower water approaching
mexico bay.of coarse engine would not start as trying to motor to
oswego...had to sail close hauled high winds to make oswego , this but one
of a number of times got boat surfing

new system to lubricate rudder shaft..bottom sanded repainted csc
painthull buffed...a few other small itemsall done on time ...no
surprises bill clearly detailed ..and very reasonable for what
done..the current operators at delta marine excellent
knowledgeable..cannot say the same for canoe cove bunch...who had 2
trys at rudder problems over period of 3 years, redos lasted a year, all
i really got was large bills...as a matter of interest of these 2 marinas
about 2to 3 miles apart canoe cove on the hard stayover winter night rate
is 4 times thunderbird Delta marine twice during summer season night
rateboth yards full service, washing, welding ,mast work, painting
,modern travel lifts,,delta also has mast crane.for mast work...people
should look around before committing to a yardgetting ready to come out
for hull insurance surveysand paint one coat csc antifouling...have no
connection to yardbut like good service @ a fair price...some people
feel yard is designed for power yachts ..not so...for those do it yourself
still more reasonable than local do it your self yard with old travel lift
type equipment...this info primarily for lower vancouver island sailors but
looking around for a good yard to service or assist your now 25 or more
years old cc yacht will help the ownership issues

Stus-List pricing of cnc boats

2014-07-21 Thread Jimmy Kelly via CnC-List
price of cnc 39 center cockpit...right on the mark...2 have sold west coast
last two years for 42000 and 46000...this one has higher engine hours...but
seems similar...anyone buying cncs by date of manufacture as to
age..very foolish...condition is everything...and where built in some
cases...age may apply some what to automobiles but mileage may count
also...average cnc from mid 80s seems to need much more replaced sooner
than cnc from 70s...

one nearby boat gas fuel explosionyou realize the real dangerearly
in my sailing ownerships...had experience leaking gas fuel dripping on
water jacked muffler ..noticed when engine shutdown to begin distance
race,,fuel smell,,it didnt take long for a crew of 11 to get pails..riggers
buckets ,etc, and drown whole engine and hot muffler...auto pumps activated
water fuel pumped overboard..left gas spill on water which SAR was happy
to clean up...reason for event discovered later fuel tank float rubbed
bottom of tank until wore hole in tank bottom...crew really had it
together...one half did engine drowning..other half..hung over bow to
encourage fwd pumps to engage ..REALLY LUCKY..FUME DETECTER ALSO
DEFECTIVEhad manya4s after that with quality fail safe fume

if you have the moneyget a good marine inspection..so you know your
total costs ..dont worry about sailing itfurling head sail makes this
possible...basic autopilot...some good used ap availablereliable
engine...this particular model a single handlers dream if fitted out..start
first with light winds to get feel of boat...this model sails well with
just foresail...get dock easy to land.allow you to drift ...down on
landing.always go slow just minimum amount of way when landing.many
sailors some experts...fell this to large for beginners..but ..a number of
lower experience sailors have begun with 48fters two older friends started
each with cc39s when they were plus 60 yrs old ..the older cc hulls1975
earlier are easier to sail single handed as a rule ...under body design
more conservativeexamples newport 41s,redline 41s,crusader40s,landfall

Stus-List cc design 41ft yawl

2014-07-01 Thread Jimmy Kelly via CnC-List
certainly looks original...bruckmann built maybe hull layed up by
belleville marine...lister not to well informed ...is fin keel ,spade
rudder,is not a hull with core ..as first was redjacket ..this hull
probably taken from modified crusader hull mold sometime in 1965
or66...this is a great sailing hull..excellent buy and well worth the
price unless some unseen problem...which would be easily repaired..not
redline 41 hull mould as they arrived late 1967 and first two hulls laid up
and then mould used as swimming pool later 41s new mould.part of
selling is ease of viewing ...suspect boat on mooring not easy to get

Stus-List furlers for head sails...

2014-05-04 Thread Jimmy Kelly via CnC-List
you tend to get what you pay for.for durability resale value plus
after sales service two brand s stand out over time...furlex from
sweden..and harken from usa.harken after service is A
oneresale as addition to boat ads value...i would go harken with a
reputable sailmakers sail... depending on your local...UK., maybe North,
could cost a little more but with sun strip..foam luff furling,..and
sailmaker coming to boat to measure ...all possible errors sailmakers
problem...then fitting new sail..you will get the best...if sailmaker will
not come to boat then for sure don,t use.lets out most far east lofts
where have seen some really horrible work which owners were stuck
with...and in many cases other local sail lofts refused to work on
modification repair...as stated at beginning ..you tend to get what you
pay for...good sailing

tuning engines if had older marine diesel would use it. knew of one
user in virgin islands who used it for at least 25 yrs on his very then old
volvo diesel...it worked for him...it seemed to help with overheating

2014-04-10 Thread Jimmy Kelly
have found a number of buyers who will not purchase rod boats or will
deduct cost of replacement to wire from purchase pricethis is prevelent
on great lakes also on west coastas to racing, wire can be just good
as rod with right hydralics or mechanical devices...also we found with
many race courses ..upwind starts...rest of legs off wind or beam
reaches..fine tuning the rig best with wire..contrary to some experts
upwind not where races won but at start and then downwind..having won more
than our share of races in big boat series cca,ior 1,2,3 3a,phrf.as well
as around the buoys in average size division 41cnc..this may give the

2014-04-10 Thread Jimmy Kelly
rod weight vs wire weight is not significantwindage not any real
difference ..real problem with rod ,needs ends reworked about every 10
years...back in late 70s ...cnc introduced rod on inshore design models,
as a marketing strategy...after using it on custom larger offshore
models..it did seem to enhance the product sales...as a mass production
builder.at the time it also worked out as cost saving measure..number
offshore racing yachts in 70s 80s changed to wire again when switching
from hydralics adjusters to new mechanical adjusters..and better wire
choices...rod was a good marketing choice

this must be one of those magazines at check out counters...like old

for the author needs to be mentally examined..her comparisons and views
are nuts...this is example of what is what is wrong with a lot of north
americans myely mouthed uninformed know it alls...some of main line tv
press hardly any better in regard to their reports, however she takes the
cake ..i started sailing at nine years old mostly on my own, but boat
supplied by grandfather was like a rainbow class sloop, old ,cotton
sails, was wooden hull, some serious leaks at first of season..but sailing by
myself in adirondacs in nystate to me was a great offshore adventure...my
children had some advantage as 5.8 yr olds we had modern knarr class 31ft
sloop that spent most summers aboard cruising racing lower great
lakes...they handled it themselves as far as i know, few real
problems...things seem to work out for kids...are today well balanced
sucessful adults ...60 plus years later i have survived

this is NOT balsa cored hullonly small deck areas have core...much of
deck reinforcer with solid fir.the shrouds are aircraft aluminum should
last longer than rest of boat...as long as fastings inside bulkhead which
are wood still intact...the hull built by belleville marine ,,one of
founding companies of cc mfg specialized in centerboard boats example
corvettes, belle marine made a lot of aircraft industry aluminium parts
especially wings i believe...ALSO RUDDER frame rudder post probably
aircraft aluminum...even battery wire was welders wire centerboard was
bronze casting...as is usually the case these features did not continue to
be used because of cost in mid 1970s...except boat s from custom

good way to keep spare,,,with gfi more you pay perhaps more you get
..however..all must meet american standards which require d to be employed
in damp areas...not to be negative get ones built in usa or germany where
mfg. standards tend to be more regulated than possible cheaper 3rd world

well...part of this they are sealed units which you open before each
season make sure they are not damp pink is damp blue is dry...if need to
dry..heat in low temp oven until sensor is blue.very low
teck.mentioned them to two different cruisers both have searched used
marine stores are very satisfied with results over last 7 to 10 years of
cruisingunit operates on 4 AAA batteries for little more than
yearmany european yachts still using original bg 1960 units
successfully...costs used 100 to 150 for complete units..all wiring, brass
thru hull fitting, with repeater readout in cockpit plus nav station
unit readout. seems like good value to us...these units are bg built in

the rob ball designed 41 is great boat looks...interior but not a great
offshore cruiser...not much fun in bigger offshore chop...,will take it but
crew will be very uncomfortable.if i were beginning long offshore
cruising destinations ..would look for cnc designed newport 41s
...whitby 45 ..cnc design...redline 41...these boats all cuthbertson
inspired designs...not built for any particular racing rulebut rather
fast ,close winded...good load carrying ability..all raced successfully
..under cca rule, ior 1,ior 23a...but also hulls dont pound in rough
seas..very dry upwind sailing...as to things like ventilation etc various
owners have used AH offshore opening ports...low diesel engine required
especially if repowered by newer high torque engines...giving long range
motor cruising...but you will probably actually sail these models more
than motorthese boats come up for sale ..just keep looking... or go
simple routelandfall 38...little slower under sail ..not as close
winded but good offshore boats...a number of these models can be flatbed
road shipped without escorts or over height restrictionsmy experience
would rate land fall 38 42s over ontario 38 a cnc cuthbert
design...although it appeared to sail well when new...

most easterners that really consider resettlement to island dont do
it..between lack of equal employment renumeration as per ontario.
..majority of successful resettlement are retirement type sailors or
skiers..the few others that arrive go to interior...so i suggest dont have
a lot of easterners to worry about and any how need some to buy our
boats when we retire or move up to larger yachts...contrary to popular

Stus-List single handed docking

2014-01-03 Thread Jimmy Kelly
agree with martin deyoung cc 43 calipso put fender out on both sides...we
use 4 large fenders on each side plus light center cleat brest line...our
dock at times heavy eratic cross currents plus often or not, beam
winds...work well over last 20yrs ..NEVER ever give bow line to anyone...
will pull your bow into dock.you will have little control...we keep coiled
and last line to be cleated by us...biggest problem on occasion side drift
to boat sharing well ..seldom happens when prepared ...keep our cleanest
fenders to face boat sharing well...have had to sail in to slip a number of
times in past ..various engine problems..most often after long distance
overnight races...on these occasion s usually had crew of ...9 to 11 but..
had to have well rehearsed instructions ...repeated back to cockpit
captain until those needed had totally clear...single handed docking is a
matter of a plan..what ever situation ...has worked well for many years on
a heavy 42 ft raceboat...now mostly cruising. if decide to back into
facilitate unloading lot of gear etc.always put out extra.two large stern
fenders..which had to be taken from storage below inflatedwe learned a
lot of this many years ago.from r ryders cc50 .and van meters..

stay with your local lofts...then you get after service like proper

get direct written quote by the sailmaker..himself...the price for normal
cut dacron sail will vary little.from one loft to another...only real
variables are after service...when decide to purchase get loft to come to
boat take measurementsany mistakes are theirs not yours..when they
fit the new sail to boat.about time for boat show pricing 20 percent
discounts can sometimes be obtained...get quote now then get requote for

you checked rudder grease fittings..as to leaks you may find hard to
distinguish as will be corroded out ..just a rough blobthese fittings
were brass but some appeared to have mixed metal interiors...easy to
replace..just need someone who can fit to get at thembest to do out of
water if possible ..replacing with new fitting with long grease hose
attached makes life lot easier to service ...once greased with grease gun
under pressure wont leak any apparent looseness in rudder stock..probably
cured... also for your interest C C at that time built many one offs..of

Stus-List fish hooks

if you have fish hooks in halyards it usually a sign to replace halyard or
you screwed it up using itanyhow have used wire to rope halyards for
over 40 years on custom cc 42...race cruise ..sail every week year
round...long time in north carolina virginia carribean...now west coast
bc...only replaced once when got new lighter weight mast..dont seem to have
any problems...BUT EXIT BOXES must be lined up properly.. entrance to
boxes done correctly..no line elongation..well maintained sail
shapeonly adjustments gooseneck adjustment downhaul outhaul on main
backstay sheets on headsail plus foot leach lineswe noticed a
serious competitor # of years ago to spectra synthetic halyards on a cc 48
..lasted less than a month of competative racingmost cc 48s,cc50s
lot of 43s still racing...plus cc 54,s,61 all have gone back to wire to
rope halyards plus local 38s in this area...large over lapping head sails
put extreme loads on halyards..ONLY THING NEGATIVE WITH WIRE TO ROPE IS
PRICE finding a well trained experienced splicermany of us use
wilson yates located in newfoundland canada ...he was cc custom rigger
plus many other mfgs.cs yachts ontario yachts..etc...have sailed plus 5

Stus-List rudder bearings

2013-10-31 Thread Jimmy Kelly
rudder bearings on older cc designs 1970s really quite simple not
complicated.if my memory from the shop in oakville they were really simple
with not much to breaksimply block the rudder to prevent it falling
out..unhook steering cables ..pullout cross pins..or any other
stops...if anythe rollers can be removed...rudder should be
free.from down below with a helper ..rudder heavier than you
thinkmove it back forth it will come lose...just carefully lower to
ground.if in freezeing climate store in heated areaany water
seepage will expand and crack coveringtwo most possible areas to check
turning blocks for steeringcable bearings if edson easily
replaced..if wire never replaced good idea.other area is where
rollers run on bearings check for wear bearing dereline is simple
ring easy to obtain and replace.if rudder shaft stainless not much
more to doas long as bearing box still well fastened...if need be
repair reglassif aluminum will need grease conduits cleaned out
regreased.mine aluminum cleaned with new grease nipples .
regreaseddepending on original owners needs aluminum option often
selected because lighter in a wt sensive area...not a hard job as long as
rudder will clear ground ...which on viking it should as long as original
rudderif need more info i can check see if still have original
