Hello all,
I'm getting rid of my Navtec backstay adjuster, it needs a rebuild ($620 from
Navtec). I put it on eBay for cheap, but I'm only going to leave the listing up
for a month. If it doesn't sell in that time, consider it free to any lister
who wants it. My guess is shipping should be about $30-40. The model number is
IA7-10, pulled it from my 1976 38-ii. Navtec says these are from 1989-1999.

Here is the link to the listing if you just can't wait. Photos are on the
listing.

Raritan makes an excellent water heater. I had one on my 1983 C&C 29. The
original was still working fine after 30 years. I purchased a new one because
the top on the old one was starting to show signs of rust. I sold that boat
before installing the new water heater. If anyone is interested in buying a 6
gallon Raritan water heater with a heat exchanger, I still have it. Drop me a

Re: Stus-List Mast Step Pitch & Helm Balance

2017-03-25 Thread Lee via CnC-List

Randy, sorry to complicate your project but there are a couple more
considerations depending on just how involved and precise you want to be, If
you intend to race your 30-1 {they are excellent for such} you will want to
consider initial mast bend. If so the shape of the mast butt can ease the
process by putting some rocker on the butt so as to control where mast
compression puts pressure, fore or aft , or by shimming to achieve the same
effect You can check the butt with a woodworking square.Your sailmaker can
assist to determine how much prebend to use.Hope I didn't ruin your day.

Thank you all for the excellent responses.

Matthew, figuring out what C&C's intentions were, for aft mast step elevation,
is what I'm trying to do. I assume they intended for the mast to perfectly
plumb when the boat is sitting on her designed waterline in perfectly calm
water and calm air. Then rig tuners would set the rake from there. Of course,
those aren't the conditions I'm working in, so it's all guesswork (levels are
useless with the boat on the trailer).

Michael, interesting point about heel at the foot of the mast. I'll check that
out today. I assumed the foot of my mast is flat, and makes contact all the
way around the mast box. I agree the side-to-side level is critical - from rig
tuning last year, I believe Grenadine's is off (the aft end of the mast block
lists to port, requiring more halyard tension to touch the starboard rail than
the port rail, and I couldn't correct that via upper shroud tension without
bowing the mast). That should get corrected by the new aft support, assuming I
cut it and install it correctly.

Rick thanks for the reminder about the owner's manual rig tuning instructions
cautioning against forward rake. I follow those instructions to the letter for
rig tuning, and you're exactly right, I set 8" of rake on Grenadine. Regarding
my 30-kt experience, it was on June 22nd last year - see archived wind graph at
http://wx.iwindsurf.com/map#39.548,-105.08,14,1,!11170,7. We had
light-to-decent wind for our race at 6:30, so I was flying all that sail. Then
after the race the wind really piped up and I wanted to learn how Grenadine
would behave under that press of canvas. At the moment of that 30-kt (true)
gust just after 8:00, I was on starboard tack close reach, trimmed for that
point of sail, going 7.6 knots according to GPS (with fixed 2-blade prop even),
with five people on the rail, and my genoa tore before I got a rail in the
water. That's how stiff a 30-1 is. Of course I had a hell of a lot of weather
helm in those conditions, and I was within about an inch or another degree of
heel of burying the rail. I've yet to learn what it takes to bury a rail on a
30-1. If Grenadine had had a folding prop at the time, I believe she could
have touched 8 knots. Will find out this year :)

Given all these great responses, I think I'll split the difference and cut the
aft support to the elevation indicated by the dashed line in
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-NqAxQ6JxFTU3hRNmZoMUU1MFk. Thanks again
everyone.

Cheers,
Randy

Randy;

I could have sworn that I have seen a table that lists the initial mast rake
for various C&C models built in the 70’s, but I’m not able to find it.

The rig tuning information on the Photo Album, and the information in the
owner’s manuals that came with my 25 mk1 and my 38 mk2 all show the same
information about setting up the mast rake:

On a 24, the target for initial rake is 6” measured at the gooseneck. For the
38, the target is 10”. Looking up the I dimensions and doing a little math says
the initial target for your 30-1 would be 8” of rake. But the instructions
indicate (and this could have changed over time) that some sailmakers prefer no
rake when they make the sails, and caution against having any forward rake in
the mast. The process recommended in the manuals is to set the mast up (close
to vertical is implied) and then adjust the forestay and backstay to achieve
the target rake. Then put in the mast wedges, go sailing, and do any
appropriate tweaking.

Your post indicated weather helm in 30 knots (I’m presuming apparent) with full
main and #2 genoa. I’m not surprised. With wind that strong and a full main I
would expect the boat to be standing on its ear and rounding up unmercifully ,
or to see that the main was trimmed almost fully out and basically flogging. I
find that both of my boats are fastest and most comfortable with a max of about
18-20 degrees of heel, YMMV, so I tend to reduce sail in the following pattern:

Ouch.

My version of Lesson 1 was when I was in college and an older alumnus
invited our team to race with him on his Serendipity 43. We went out for a
practice day, and as team captain and one of the only people with
non-dinghy race experience, I ended up as the de facto crew chief.

We get the spinnaker up and call for a jibe. Foredeck crew dips the pole
and gets it hooked up on the new guy, but it's not coming aft, so I yell to
the 6'8" dude on the primary winch to keep cranking.

The ensuing explosion of carbon fiber shards taught me a valuable lesson
about baby stays.

Turns out I got great customer service from Head Foil. I sent them a
picture and description of the half I didn't drop overboard, and they dated
it to the first years of their company - early 70s, meaning my luff support
system was probably original. They looked but couldn't find a replacement
part. So I'm getting a new Head Foil system after a 44-year service life
on the previous one. Not sure the replacement feed funnel have would have
been a complete fix anyway, because some of the plastic extrusion
underneath it cracked and broke off. Without a new system I'm worried that
sharp plastic edges might cut luff tapes of headsails being hoisted. The
new Head Foil system is significantly less expensive than competing systems
or furlers. I called / emailed the company on Saturday morning and they
called me back within a few hours. My new system shipped today. I'll
report back after installing and using it.

There's actually more to the story. Went out for a leisure sail with
family, and the genoa foot fouled on a horn cleat during the hoist. My
daughter's boyfriend (big strong kid) kept hauling on the halyard until the
feed funnel blew apart. Both halves were still dangling by one of two
screws holding them together (the other screw blew out somewhere during the
hoist). When we got back to the marina I went to take all the parts off
the forestay to see if I could find replacement screws and re-assemble the
whole thing, and that's when I dropped the part overboard. But I'm not
sure reassembly would have worked anyway because of the broken plastic.
The lessons: (1) if a sail is not going up like you expect, something is
wrong, and continuing to haul on the halyard will only break something; (2)
be careful not to drop shit overboard :)

Randy

I believe it has a luff rope (no slides) and is loose footed. It was the
better of the two mains that came with the boat. I don't recall the name of
the sailmaker, but it was not North, Quantum or UK. Probably someone local to
southern VA where the boat came from. there is still a sail repair tag on it,
but I don't remember what was done.

After spending many years celebrating a white Christmas, it is unusual for us
to see green grass, flowers in bloom and the temperatures averaging 75-80F.
Sitting by the pool on Christmas Eve, drinking our egg nog on the deck is
something we have never experienced. But I am sure we will endure.

This festive season is one to be thankful for but at the same, we should open
our hearts to those less fortunate especially those close to home.

Hello, listers. I had an off-list query regarding the best WiFi system out
there, to allow better reception in minimal signal areas, and the ability to
use a router to distribute WiFi to devices onboard. Without a doubt, the best
that I’ve seen so far for our size vessel would be the Coastal Marine WiFi
system:

By the way, if any Canucks out there are looking for an inexpensive pair of
ratcheting crimpers for 10-22 AWG insulated wire terminals, Canadian Tire has
them on sale this week for $10.50! Even the non-sale price of $29.99 is good,
compared to, for example, the Ancor version at $80 – $100.

I have to say I haven’t tried these, but they look almost identical to the $30
no-name set I picked up from Princess Auto about 3 years ago ... which has
worked flawlessly. Much, much better tool than those cheap flat steel
crimper-strippers you typically see that are almost impossible to get a good
crimp without ripping the insulation on the terminals.

“Unnecessary” is a relative word, of course, but none of the activities such as

There was mention recently of 'hooks" that insert into the mast collar then
bolt to the mast to hold the deck down when running rigging is under tension.

On my 35-3, the bolt through the mast has started to tear at the mast column
and elongate the holes. I could change the length of the "hooks" and create
another hole somewhere else on the mast. In that case, has anyone used a

have any other solutions out there (e.g. wire to the mast step each side)?

David; I own a 1987 35-3 c/b and would take it anywhere ! It is quite seaworthy
as Ihave taken it on ocean trips to as far as Marblehead , Mass, from the south
shore of Long Island N Y. She goes very well to windward even with the board up
thanks to a good sized shoal keel and inboard shrouds.Draft on this model is
4ft 2 in. Hull is cored except for thru hull areas. No delam issues, deck or
hull.Boat came with spin gear but I don't think there were any differences in
rig. Boat is a pleasure to sail especially to windward, although she tends to
need a reef over 18 app. Idont know your sailing venue but I think you would
love this boat .
Good luck and happy sailing!!

Hi All, asking for advice on this model.

This boat “Freya" is for sale. She is a centerboard model.

Can anyone advise on:

Suitability of 4’6” draft for Intracoastal/ Bahamas?

Does the boat go to windward well with a board? Does anyone race the CB
version?

Weaknesses? Is the hull cored or solid? I hear decks of this era are cored
and
have delam issues.

Suitability of this model for coastal use maybe Bahamas/ Nova Scotia/ Central
America? Not ocean.

Any variations of this model? For example were there tall VS short rig options
etc.

Many thanks,

David Dawes.

Hi Lee
Where are you located, that would help in advising sources of
materials.

As for technique, this has come up a few times and the archives
should have lots of suggestions.

Stus-List Teak and Holly floor Boards

2014-05-24 Thread Lee via CnC-List

I need to replace the floor boards on my 1987 35' C&C Mark 3.
I am having trouble finding a source. Any suggestions for me or has anyone
done this before?
