I need some mental counseling: I have a 1985 37; I have replaced my Main and
150 with new sails; they work well and the old sail have been sitting in my
garage for the past year: I can send them to Bacon's for a few pennies on the
dollar, and I pay shipping costs; or my other option is to send them to Seabags
or one of the other outfits that cut them up and make stuff from the materials;
I really don't know which way to go on this; I have a mental block about
cutting up the sails, but I really don't have any use for them myself; if
anyone on the list wants them I would gladly give them to that person: any
advice or help for me ? Thanks

I need to take my canvas back to them for winter work later this year. Is there
anything interesting near there to do if I am going to drive all that way

(shipping canvas for an alteration and back to me had both USA and Canadian

I lock the wheel shaft before I remove the wheel and then gravity keeps the key
in place. If the key does end up falling it only falls to the cockpit floor.
I've considered rubber bands and pvc pipe sleeves. I've even considered a shim
in the keyway to make the key fit tighter so that friction prevents it from
falling. It's just not a problem which is bad enough to command enough of my
attention to make it better.

also like to straddle the hump and stand on the aft benches to get a clearer

accessible from in front or behind the wheel but taking or giving control from
in front is much easier when you can reach the wheel unencumbered. It is a
challenge to get around the wheel. While underway we just step up on the
port/stbd hatches. When not underway we remove the wheel and stowing it on a
mount designed by edson specifically for storing the wheel on a pushpit rail.

Hi Chris,

Good story.

One of the neat things about working at C&C in the "glory days" was having a
custom wood shop. Actually, we had 3. One at NOTL, one in Newport and one at
the custom shop in Oakville. Not sure if the plant in Keil, Germany had one or
not. The master woodworkers in those shops could do anything.

It gave us the flexibility to do custom "touches" which were often the requests
of the Lady. It was not difficult to build a custom teak pot holder, stereo
rack or vanity for cosmetics. And it was often the little touchs that made the
sale. When I did my C&C 29 out of the Rhode Island plant I was pipe smoker and,
much to my surprise, it came with a 3 station custom teak pipe holder at the
chart table and even a teak "pipe".

It was great fun working for company that was sitting in the catbird seat of
the industry, building the best and fastest boats and being able to give an
owner exactly what he wanted. It was a heady time in the marine business and I
am glad I was part of it back then.

Cheers,

Hank

When I first joined C&C Yachts in 77, I think the coves and stars (arrows) were
painted. They went to mylar for the stripes shortly thereafter. A few years
later they put a gap in the cove so the boat name could be painted there. The
stars remained gold painted. Later on we offered the cove and stars in a
variety of colors to match boot stripes. The stars remained painted long after
the coves went to mylar, but eventually they went mylar tape too.

It is interesting that the stars and diamond next to them were never
standardized. If you look at C&C's over the years some of the stars are short
and stubby, some of them are long and pointed and everything in between. I
remember suggesting to George, Rob and David that the stars had become a
"signature" of C&C and should be standardized. That never happened while I was
there. I think it depended on who was making the hull plug and the hull molds
as to how the stars looked.

A side story about coves and stars : Butch Cannon headed up a very successful,
nationwide architectural firm and was a Past Commodore of the Youngstown Yacht
Club in Youngstown, N.Y. which is right across the river from Niagara On The
Lake where C&C's were built. He was also a member of RCYC, a legendary racer on
Lake Ontario and had many C&C's over the years. While I was working there, he
went to RCR Yachts for a new C&C 37. Don Finkle at RCR Yachts in Youngstown
sold him the boat and sent Butch over to see me at the NOTL plant to work out
the details of what he wanted on the boat. After all the specifics of winches,
halyards, etc. he pulled a grey plastic vacuum cleaner nozzle out of his brief
case and said "Hank, this is the color I want my boot stipe, cove and stars".
I told him we would try and later in the day went to the plant manager with the
nozzle and told him what Butch wanted. Everyone at C&C knew Butch and the
plant manger just nodded and took the nozzle with a smile. The 37 was about 80%
complete when Butch again visited the plant to see her abuilding. He looked at
the boot top, cove and stars and questioned if that was the right color grey ?
I just happened to have the vacuum nozzle in my pocket, pulled it out and held
it up to the stars. The color match was perfect ! Butch just smiled and I
handed him back his nozzle. Butch did well racing his 37 and became a good
friend and mentor when I served as Commodore of the Youngstown Yacht Club in
1985. We lost him about five years ago, well into his 80's.

Cheers,

Hank

Hi Doug,

Third GTA winter coming up and I have not yet run the red stuff through
windstar's engine. (IIRC the manual does not mention doing this) What I have
done is drain the water lock muffler and raw water strainer, remove the hoses
to the water pump, then drain the block through the two valves on the engine
block. (access under the galley sink) Blow any water out though the water
pump hose.
Not sure whether that's optimal or not
Anyway, If I were to use the red stuff, (and I may) I would drain everything
first so I could be sure that the antifreeze was not too diluted.
It really is a good time to look in on the water pump impeller..
I would also check the specific gravity of the coolant to ensure its freeze
point is low enough. You can get a tester at Crappy tire for this for less
than $10.
Top up the batteries with distilled water.

David,

I’d spend the few extra bucks and get a good 3M tape. I just did some Awlcraft
painting for gloss and non-skid on my hatches and I used the Awlgrip (and my
painter) recommended 3M 218 Fine Line tape for masking the gloss vs. non-skid
prior to spraying. I’ll be masking off the entire deck sometime this week or
next and I find the 218 properties to be easy to use. Electrical tape is a bit
stretchy and I’m not fond of the glue used.

Don’t know what your setup with the boat in the yard is but a good way to mark
the waterline and boot stripes is with a laser. Boat’s gotta be level
fore-and-aft and side-to-side.

Good thread. My question has always been what to do with the helm seat and
wheel? I've never actually tried removing the helm seat but it sure does appear
like it can be removed, just not sure how, or whether it's needed on the 32.

I keep my emergency tiller in the port side cockpit locker on the upper shelf
with the wrench taped to it. Really easy to get to, but I should probably do a
practice run.

I'm a fair weather, lake sailor, so I never really prioritized this as much as
I should.

Apologies - my post is not at all clear.

I am wondering where others cleverly stow the tiller and its tools. When I
got mine it was buried in the cockpit locker, with rusting wrenches Masking
taped to the arm.
I fastened the wrenches with small cable ties and tied the lot to the straps
which secure the fuel tank. At least I can find it quickly, assuming it has
not untied itself.
I would rather have it secured in an easy to access location (I have some
thoughts) and would like it to be tool-less. (Have not thought about that yet.)

Am interested in your tiller experience 'under fire'.

Subject: Stus-List Removing Cabin-Top Handrails

Listers-

My next project is to refinish and re-bed the teak hand rails on the cabin top
of my boat. Any tips on how to remove them? I believe there are screws
covered by bungs from the interior hand rails to the exterior hand rails aft of
the bulkhead separating the salon from the head. But how are the exterior
handrails fastened forward of that bulkhead? (the exterior hand rails extend
farther forward than the interior ones).

I need to remove them in order to re-bed them, as I've got a leak from the port
aft screw hole onto my ice box lid and galley countertop around it, causing
delamination of the plywood countertop at the ice box lid cutout.

My plan is to strip them (if necessary), sand them, and just oil them with teak
oil, following instructions from Don Casey. If you think a sealer or varnish
would be better, I'd be interested in hearing your opinion.

Also, inspired by Dennis's pictures from Touche, I've posted a few pictures of
my boat at https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-NqAxQ6JxFTaUlpUkZJWGt5RVk. So
far the only projects I've done are cosmetic stuff on the hull exterior: lots
of topsides buffing and waxing, putting on my own transom decals, sanding and
repainting the boot stripe, and spot-sanding and re-coating the bottom with
VC-17 (plus adding a combination spare tire / carrier wheel to the trailer).

I'd like to thank you all again for making this list such an outstanding
resource. I'm very grateful to be able to communicate with you all. And
special shout-out to Stu Murray for making all this possible - I just ordered
five quantity of "Photo Album Support" from the C&C Photo Album Online
Chandlery in appreciation.

Cheers,

West Marine has an automatic inflatable harness on sale today only for 150
bucks. (U.S.)

I have no experience with the product, but I just paid more than twice that

He did mine. I wasn't unhappy with the work but since then I've questioned the
value of surveys in general. He didn't tell me anything I didn't know. He did a
good job but stayed within his scope. I can send you my survey if you want a
sample of the work. I don't believe I'm breaking any agreement by sharing it.

I'm far from a pro, just a blunderer who's read a lot of Don Casey and Nigel
Calder. I own the same moisture meter that those guys use. The notion that you
have to be a rocket surgeon to use a moisture meter is a little beyond me.
There's a lot an amateur can learn about a boat with one of those before
spending $600 on a survey. Sure, you can get false positives, like backing
plates registering as moisture .. but you won't get false negatives. If there's
moisture, it'll find it.

One might be better off looking for sound absorbing material from an industrial
supplier.

Below is a link to sound absorbers at McMaster-Carr. One the materials listed
as ''Easy-to-Clean and Fire Retardant'' is melamine foam. I looked up
melamine on wikipedia and it turns out to be the standard used for sound
proofing and also the same foam used for the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.
Interesting read.

Quite often Holland Marine has acoustic insulation on a big discount at the
Toronto Boat Show. (Next week!) Your timing may be perfect.

Any particularly good materials to recommend?
Any suggestions as to sources in Canada? (Toronto specifically - film industry

Hi Len,

I re-did mine a couple years and used a multi-step approach that provided an
"As New" look.

  * I got the trademark enblems / stars for both ends from Holland Marine in
Toronto. Those are actual originals. (http://www.hollandmarine.com/) they also
have the ready made triple stripe in some colors (Easier to install). I needed
royal blue and they did not have it
  * I got 2 rolls of royal blue stripes (1/8 width and 1/2" width) from Great
Lakes skipper http://greatlakesskipper.com/Those are Bayliner stripes and their
backing has built-in 1/8" spacer area / markings
  * I got the "Stripe eraser" wheel from ebay
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pinstripe-removal-Discs-Astro-400E-Eraser-Inc-Arbor-400E-AR-stripe-glue-set-/351161305017?hash=item51c2d847b9&item=351161305017&vxp=mtr
  *
  *
Once you get the hang of the eraser wheel it takes about 30 minutes to cleanly
remove about 30 feet of stripe.

  * Next step I installed the Original C&C Emblems on both ends, then I layed
the bottom stripe following the edge of the sunk-in stripe area
  * I layed the 1/2" middle stripe by following the spacer markings off the
lower stripe
  * I layed the top 1/8" stripe by lining-up the spacer backing to the middle
stripe
  *
It sounds more complicated than it is. It turned-out outstanding. I still get
compliments on how straight and "factory" the stripes look.

Re: Stus-List Interior Cushions

2015-09-22 Thread Tim Sippel via CnC-List
Hi Al,
This may be a bit late , but a few years I replaced all my interior cushions
(actually 10 years ago) .
I took photos of every cushion on the boat and put them in a word document
along with the measurements for each cushion .
I sent the document to every upholsterer I could find with an e-mail address,
marine automotive, furniture etc.
Got a response from a upholsterer specializing restaurant furniture (?) he was
thousands less than any marine outfit. The upholsterer also had good prices on
Ultraleather (and a few competitor products)
They suggested I use mesh on the backs of cushions (like on outdoor lawn
furniture) to save some money and allow better breathing , they still look
great.
The interesting thing for you Toronto area readers , the guy is in Kitchener
... a few blocks from where I was living.

I have a 1981 C & C '34 with original cushions. I recently got an estimate from
a local marine canvas shop for replacement of all the fabric (retaining the
original foam) using the lowest cost sunbrella material. I was surprised to see
it was over $4000 for the job, and over $6000 to replace the foam as well.

I would appreciate any suggestions for alternative ways to go on upgrading the
interior upholstery.

Thanks in advance.

because it was one thing doesn't mean you can't use a different manufacturer.

That's a bummer .. the two marine stores I frequent, West Marine and Genco.
Genco has already closed it's doors on Queens Quay and now when West Marine
closes there will be nowhere to go "in a pinch". Everyone else is quite a drive
for me. What other options are there on Toronto's downtown waterfront???

Wonder why?

West Marine plans exit from Canadian market

Marine retailer West Marine will close 10 stores in Canada during the next few
years, ending its presence in the country.

“We have some fantastic associates up in Canada. This was a very difficult
decision for us,” West Marine CEO Matthew Hyde told analysts during a quarterly
earnings call Oct. 23. “That said, this is all about ensuring that when leases
come up that we’re making the right determination about where we invest our
money.”

The company has seven leases coming up throughout the coming year, “so we’re
going to be in Canada for quite some time,” Hyde said.

But the leases that were coming up “didn’t meet our minimum hurdles,” he said.
Also, Canada faces some additional expenses. “So we will be closing our stores
in Canada over the next few years,” Hyde said.

With the exception of the Toronto store, where the company has the lease
termination at the end of this year, the six additional stores will operate
“basically through the season,” said CFO Thomas Moran.

“As you can imagine, Canada is a pretty highly seasonal market. So that’s just
a callout about next year.

But beyond that, the impact on our top-line sales and on in our contribution
and profitability is immaterial [in 2015],” Moran said.

I must disagree. Steaming light is forward facing white light located
approximately 2/3 way up mast and showing 225 degrees forward only, lit along
with running lights when motoring a sailing vessel. It is not all around white
masthead light. my belief.

I'm looking to donate some of my old sails to charity. Each one that I have

Does anyone know of a formula or other method for valuing used sails? I'm not
looking to cheat the government (though don't get me started) or cause problems

There has to be a way to come up with a fair value, no?

Appreciate any ideas or website links that could start the process.

Weather looks great for the Gulf Coast for the next 6-7 days. Highs
near 80, lows under 60 and no chance of rain.

The Admiral and I are seizing the weather window and taking Touche' to
Pensacola for a few weeks. We want to watch the Blue Angels Home Show
the weekend of Nov. 8. We'll spend weekends there and bring it back to
Lake Pontchartrain after Thanksgiving.

Plan is to leave early Friday and get to Gulfport, MS (10 hours). Then
depart early Saturday and get to The Wharf Marina on the ICW at Orange
Beach, AL (12 hours) in time to watch an evening football game. On to
Pensacola for lunch Sunday (4 hours). Winds look light so probably have
to motor but should be pleasant delivery anyway.

Sometime last spring, someone on the list mentioned that he was reading the
Farley Mowat book; "The Boat Who Wouldn't Float"; I had never heard of Mr.
Mowat, but noted that the comment was that the book was enjoyable. So I picked
up a used paperback copy on ebay. I laid it aside during spring launch and
other activities, and came across it a couple of weeks ago. I just finished
the book and I am hooked. This was a great read and I couldn't put it down.
Since I know little of the northern waters described in the book, I kept my
laptop next to me and scoped out all of the places they went, which made it
even more enjoyable. So thank you to whomever it was that suggested the book,
I am now a Mowat fan!

So clean any space that needs proper sealing, clean it after the butyl is

Key to difficult docking situations is a midships spring line. If you drop a
short spring on a piling you can run against it and snug up to the dock under
power either way and under sail going downwind.

I've always wanted to practice sailing to a dock, but I don't have a slip. I've
sailed on and off of a single point mooring but not my three point mooring. The
three point dictates which direction you're approaching from regardless where
the wind is. Same as a slip but with a slip you can sidle up with the spring
line, not so with the mooring. Quickly grabbing a stern line and throwing it on
a winch is fine and all but not optimal. Optimal is bringing the boat to a stop
and leisurely dealing with the lines. Not always an option depending on
conditions of course.

How do you stop the boat with the wind behind you?

I'm eager to learn this but I'm also eager not to damage my boat on the gnarly
breakwall just forward of my slot. We're finally gonna get a sail in today
after work, maybe I'll try it with the motor in neutral, just in case. Main or
jib? Which is more appropriate for manoeuvring and docking in tight quarters
shorthanded?

Which is exactly why I advocate practicing sailing in! We lose these skills
over time, so practice is necessary and far from irresponsible. Nothing says we
have to come charging in at hull speed. Try approaching with just the jib or
just the main up--it's part of getting to know your boat. It sure beats waiting
for SeaTow as your boat drifts down an grounds on the jetty.

And in a man overboard situation, I absolutely would prefer to use the engine.
Unless it was too rough, or as very often happens in the kefuffle of a man
overboard, a line wraps around the prop. That's the reason we ALWAYS practice
MOB retreival under sail.

us would prefer to use the engine in a MOB situation than do it under sails
alone.

The harbours got more crowded, the slips narrower, the skills required did not
get better and the engines did. Not to mention that we very often sail
shorthanded.

This does not take away from the fact that not that long ago even bigger
vessels operated without the auxiliary power and somehow managed to do that.

Guess I am missing something here…maybe I don’t understand what is meant by
“marina”. I know it is possible to dock a 35 footer like Alianna at a “marina”
using sails only and I have done it a time or two but under unfavorable wind
conditions due to direction or strength in such close quarters I prefer to use
auxiliary power and have my sails down and packed away before going to the dock
or maybe I am missing what auxiliary power means to anyone in craft not
outfitted with sails…or maybe I have just become more of a whimp and less of a
purest as I grew older…hell I even prefer auxiliary power when tieing up to a
mooring in a crowded mooring field and sailing off a mooring in a crowded field
in some wind conditions can also be tricky and unnecessarily risky

In my olden days as a member of the Yacht Club's Executive Committee, business
was brought forth to propose that sailboats must use engines in the marina (or
something to that effect). I pointed out that engines are auxiliary power on
sailboats and if we are to endorse this business I will push that ALL vessels
operating in the marina are required to use auxiliary power.

That was the end of discussion.

I agree with replacing the pump assembly.
I “upgraded” the Jabsco head to a twist lock, rebuild kit was 69.99, complete
assembly was 79.00… order a spare Joker as well
Four screws a gear clamp and you’re done.
No messing around with crusty gaskets and rubber.

I've had a Jabsco for 14 years. 3-4 years ago, I put the Twist and Lock pump
assembly on it. Other than the joker valve scaling up, it has worked well.
FWI, regardless of brand of head, my advice to all is to consider replacing the
entire pump assembly rather than rebuilding an existing one. For most manual
heads, the cost differential isn't great but you get better results. You don't
know if the old pump cylinder is scored or if other parts not included in the
rebuild kit are OK. Plus, it's quicker and easier to replace the pump assembly
than to install a rebuild kit.
For instance, a pump assembly for the Jabsco is $82 on
amazon.com
(http://www.amazon.com/Jabsco-29040-3000-Marine-Manual-Assembly/dp/B001794BS0).
 A rebuild kit is $57
(http://www.amazon.com/Jabsco-29045-2000-Marine-Manual-Service/dp/B000O8D38E).
Is 30-45 minutes of your time worth $25 and the risk of a botched rebuild?

Rebuilding heads seems to be a popular activity at this time of year; I

I always remember why I bought the stubby Phillips #2 screwdriver when I do it.
The previous weekend I dumped four gallons of vinegar into the system to clear
scale off. It worked for the joker valve, but I was still having issues with
the pump losing prime and not drying easily without holding the valve leaver
down. Once apart, it was pretty obvious why - the metal backing washer from
one of the inlet valve had corroded off the rubber piece, and while I was there
I just changed all the parts that were in the service kit.

Joker valves seem to be common across head designs, and a necessary evil, but I
am fed up with having to rebuild the pump on the Headmate once or twice a year,
so am planning to replace it this winter. Can anyone share experiences with
their heads (ours gets very light use, strictly no solids)? I am considering
the Jabsco Twist n Lock or the Raritan PHC.

Thanks,

Tim

Steve,

Others have given you good advice. Just count the turns on the shrouds as you
loosen the rig. Use a pry bar to move it forward. No biggie.

I put shims under my mast by loosening the rig, placing a vehicle jack under a
winch, lifting it and sliding the shims under the butt.
