David — I’ve had really good luck with these: http://www.rei.com/product/850679/princeton-tec-vizz-headlamp Good battery life, and they can be very bright when needed. Also, the top-mounted on/off/color/dim switch has a mode where you can lock out operation, so you don’t accidentally burn the batteries after stuffing the light into a bag (and accidentally hitting the switch). The red mode works great at night on a boat. Had all kinds of headlamps for boating, backpacking etc. By far the most useful for on the boat at night standing watch and in camp at night is the Petzl Emergency headlamp. Super light, has red mode, long lasting batteries and NOT blindingly bright at night. I have had mine for going on 10yrs now and still works like a charm and I use it a ton. In fact, you will see all of the volvo guys are using them this year for their night watches, so you know they will hold up in the Southern Ocean, should you ever bring your C&C there. http://www.rei.com/product/838548/petzl-elite-headlamp Now for working on the boat in dark corners we use more traditional lamps. We have two black diamond head lamps and I would not buy another. Camping supply stores offer great quality headlamps at great prices. Check Campmor and REI. Dicks and Walmart. I find the $7 LED variety work fine and anything over $20 is just not worth it. Just check out the intensity (lumens) and get really bright ones that also have low intensity and of course red. I haven't sailed the Southern Ocean, but I've done a lot in the Atlantic and Caribbean and I still haven't found a headlamp (including Petzl) that can stand up to the salty goodness that the sea throws in my face all too often. Use what climbers do. In Canada, MEC is a good place to buy them. One of the better brands is the Black Diamond. The department store ones are usually 1/3 price (or lower), but they are also at least 1/2 as good. If you by climbing gear lights, you may have problems with white/red. I bought a cheapo Energizer headlamp from Canadian Tire after reading several reviews. I'm happy with it. It's nice that the red light comes on first. The Black Diamonds overall didn't do well for reviewers and the prices are high.
