Re: Stus-List Winch grease

2018-11-05 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
I like pulling the drum and inspecting/lubing the spindle bearings and
oiling the pawls annually. For more complex winches with lower gear
assemblies, I think 3-5 years may be adequate.

It also depends on the winch material. I would maintain alloy winches more
often than chrome/bronze or stainless winches. Why? The alloy is weaker
and more subject to wear if not properly lubricated. In particular, the
pawl pockets can wallow out if not lubricated. Once the pockets wallow
out, the winch can become unsafe or unusable.

The photo album has a lot of winch manuals online at:
http://www.cncphotoalbum.com/indexes/winches.htm

One hint, if you have pairs of winches, service one entirely before
tackling the second one. That way, you'll always have a model for
reassembly if you get lost.

I have wondered if yearly maintenance was normal.

In 2017 Windburn covered over 2,000 nm, almost all racing.
We keep the heavy #1 up to at least 18 knots, sometimes with gusts to 22+.
Overall there is a lot of use of the winches. When under heavy load the
winches are easier to use with yearly maintenance. Not much different
under lighter winds.

You guys seem to have lube problems with you winches that i have not
experienced. My winches have been cleaned and lubed only once in 15 years
and they work and sound just fine. Last time about 5 years ago I used
Harken white winch grease and Harken winch pawl oil. Still worin smooth and
sounding good. Maybe i am just lucky all Barient winches

Danny,

Very light on the grease is correct. If you put on too much, the summer
heat will cause it to run out on the gelcoat.

It is much better to apply lightly and more often than to over-apply. Once
your winches have been thoroughly cleaned and serviced, a minor lubrication
each spring should be all you need.

In my opinion, it is better to service your winches each spring with a
light lube than to let them go for years then do a "major" servicing.

If they are really gummed up, PB Blaster or a good degreaser will get off

I'm about to do my winches as well.  I've got 2 old lewmar wavegrip 55s
and 3 43s.  I also have newer 44 that is electric.  I took the 2 55s
apart and brought them home as you can take the whole winch off the
base.  The 43s don't allow for that but I did pull one apart.  They
appear to have been neglected for some time.  They are gummed up and
really dirty.  I've been watching videos and got a demonstration at the
Annapolis boat show on how to tear one down and reassemble it.  As I
recall the lewmar guy said 3in1 oil is great for the pauls and was not
that particular about the grease.  I happen to have some lewmar winch
grease.  So, I'll use that.

If you look at the lewmar demonstration video on the you tubes, the
application of the new grease is really, really, really light.  I mean,
I'm not sure if it is just for demonstration but, it appears he applies
almost no grease.  he just touches the open tube of grease with a brush
and then lightly applies that to the gears and such.  Are we supposed to
apply such a small amount or should we be coating more evenly?

I think a lot depends on a salt water or fresh water environment.  We
are in fresh water.  I cleaned and lubed my primaries (Barlow 26) on
Corsair (1970 Redwing 35) after about 30 years of service.  The aft
winches were a little dry, the forwards were just fine.  Our new boat
will get winches done this spring (Barient 18, 22 and 27), .  One of the
cabin top winches is toast, the rest seem to be servicable.

Using Lewmar as the reference for all of the other "budget" greases.  Green
Grease was found to be better in both wash of corrosion protection and static
corrosion protection.  It was given the "best choice" star (shared only with
Lewmar) AND the "budget buy" dollar sign (shared with no one else).  Green

Too late for those who already did it, but a good tip is to use an old shoe box

I?m performing maintenance on my Barient 18 winches and was wondering if there
was a preferred machine oil and grease? The Lewmar grease seems expensive and
I?d have to order it.?

and they work and sound just fine. Last time about 5 years ago I used
Harken white winch grease and Harken winch pawl oil. Still worin smooth and
sounding good. Maybe i am just lucky all Barient winches

A calcium based greases are among the more water resistant offerings.
At low speed and medium pressure calcium sulphonate is a good choice.

I contacted Shell and one of their product specialists called me back. After
a discussion of the properties of marine winches she recommended looking
at the Shell SRS 2000 line ( now renamed Gadus I think ). I got the Extreme
version which is calcium suphonate based, $12 for a standard sized grease
gun tube. I would expect it to be a lifetime supply.

After two years the grease is holding up better than anything I have previously
tried, which includes the Lewmar/Harken greases. Previously I would rebuild the
primary winches every year and have a mid season tear down to check and maybe
add some grease. I took the winches apart after a season and it looked good,
better
than they usually would look mid season.

There is information on the web if you are interested. Note it is a specific
version.

I found an old PS edition from when I still had my subscription. I'll try
to get it digitized and uploaded soon. In the mean time hear are the
standout results.

13 greases tested.

Between the official winch greases, Andersen, Harken, and Lewmar. Lewmar
was the given the "best choice" star.

Using Lewmar as the reference for all of the other "budget" greases. Green
Grease was found to be better in both wash of corrosion protection and
static corrosion protection. It was given the "best choice" star (shared
only with Lewmar) AND the "budget buy" dollar sign (shared with no one
else). Green grease was clearly the best value. $0.64/oz.

Re: Stus-List Winch grease

2018-11-04 Thread schiller via CnC-List
It might be a good time to remind what grease is.  It is a lubricating
oil, a thickener and additives.  The oils will be petroleum based or
synthetic.  The thickeners range from soaps (aluminum, lithium or
calcium based), clay (think kitty litter), or polyureas.  The additives
are for rust/oxidation, extreme pressure, friction/lubricity, etc.

The most common grease we used in precision guided weapons was synthetic
oil based with clay thickeners (Mobil 28, Aeroshell 22, MIL-PRF-81322).
This grease had a storage life of 10 years before the oil would migrate
out and leave the clay sludge.  For 30 year storage life requirements,
we used perfluourinated greases (Braycote 601EF).

It appears that the Lewmar Winch grease is a calcium soap based
synthetic.  I have used several tubes of it through the years and it is
good grease.  $60/pound for Lewmar vs. $3,200/lb for Braycote makes the
decision on winches an easier decision.

The best advice is to make sure your winches get used to keep the oil
mixed in.

I was going to suggest Braycote 601EF but since it is going for $626 US
for a 2 oz tube, you could buy new winches for about he same money.
Luckily, I ended up with a 1 oz tube when I retired.

Whoa David,
Just my 2 cents, but I'd lube Barients as Barient recommends: Winch grease on
the gears and shafts and light oil on the pawls.

Harken is a different animal and I'd follow their recommendations for their own
products. I'd reserve the "One Drop" for Harken products.

And now back to the topic- I heard back from Harken and they recommend McLube
One Drop for plastic bearings rather then their winch grease. I had some One

so I will give it a try in the Barients. Dave

I cleaned greased and oiled all of my winches (11 in total all Barient)
with Harken Performance white winch grease and Harken pawl oil, rather
pricey stuff for the amount you get...I was surprised at first to find some
plastic rollers in some of these old winches but I guess that's normal.
After getting them apart I cleaned everything up with a soft tooth brush
and varsol, rinsed and wiped dry, for the plastic rollers it says on the
grease label to use pawl oil on the rollers, not the grease. So I followed
the instructions and so far no issues whatsoever, winches run smooth and
sound good to me, biggest winches I had were 2 Barient 34+ if I remember
right, 2 speed self tailing, a little more complicated but nothing that
difficult really

Re: Stus-List winch grease

2016-03-13 Thread schiller via CnC-List
Remember that grease is simply an oil in a binder material. Most of the
red greases are an oil (synthetic or petroleum) in a very fine clay
binder (read kitty litter). When the oil migrates out of the binder,
you are the left with a gooey mess. Other greases use a soap (lithium)
binder. Braycote uses Bray oil in a teflon based perfluorinate
polyether binder so that when the synthetic oils separate, the binder
left is still slippery. The best recipe is to keep the oil mixed with
the binder. We spent a lot of time looking at this for greases that
could be in storage for up to 30 years and had to work immediately.

For a grease that is compatible with plastic bearings, look toward fine
synthetic oils. Lithium and perfluornates are basically inert. It will
definitely depend on the plastic material used in the bearing but most
tolerate synthetics. Most plastics used in bearings are self
lubricating and shouldn't need anything more that flushing the dirt out
of them.

Re: Stus-List winch grease

2016-03-13 Thread Chuck Gilchrest via CnC-List
When I worked at Edson, we used nylon caged stainless steel needle bearings in
our pedestals, similar to what I’ve seen used in Lewmar and Barient winches.
Our recommended lubricant was a Teflon based lubricant called Super Lube,
available in small .3 oz tubes with an applicator nozzle or in 3oz or 14oz
tubes. I’ve found this lubricant to be available at most Ace Hardware stores.
The issue with using a petroleum based lubricant with nylon caged bearings was
the cage was susceptible to deterioration as a result of the grease acting like
a solvent to the cage materials. Over time the cages would soften up and fail
to support the needle bearings under load.

I think Dave is on the right track, indicating that each manufacturer has its
own specific branded lube that would be compatible with the bearing materials
used in the winch. The key component is that petroleum wheel bearing grease,
straight out of the automotive garage may not be suitable on several levels,
either with regards to chemical compatibility or with viscosity.

You could look at Castrol Braycote 601. It is a perflouoronated grease
taht we used in missile controls. It is basically an inert grease that
should be compatible with the plastics. Only downside is that it is
about a $100 an ounce.

Re: Stus-List winch grease

2016-03-12 Thread David Knecht via CnC-List
I found this online which agrees with what Harken says. What it does not say is
what to use instead of grease on those plastic rollers. It also says not to
use 3in1 oil on the pawls which is what I have used in the past. Dave

Finally, before the main housing goes back in place, give all the gears and
pins a light coating of grease. Most bearings are stainless steel and should
receive a light coating of grease. If the bearings are plastic, as you'll find
in some winches, do not grease them, as it will interfere with the winch's
function. There is no need to put the grease on extra thick, and excess may
melt out in the hot summer sun across your deck. Make sure you avoid putting
grease in the pawls as grease is a little too sticky and will prevent them from
clicking. Only oil is required on the pawls. Motor or gear oil works great. A
three-and-one oil is probably too light.

I agree.  Winches are one of the most neglected pieces of hardware on a
sailboat.  I get a lot more work repairing marine heads than I do cleaning and
lubricating winches.  A lot of boat owners wait until their winches are
practically seized up before they figure it out.

Or is it the other way around?

Seriously, they're both good. I think it's more important to not over-apply
the grease than which grease you use. More is not necessarily better when
greasing winches. Excess grease may collect in pawl pockets or run out on the

I think I prefer the Lewmar simply because it's a lighter color. In the Deep

How about Braycote 601. Pretty much inert and lasts for about 30
years. Only downside is the $100/oz ($1600/lb). Used extensively in

As near as I can recall, it was 3 parts Lubriplate A, 1 part STP, and 1 part

I have found that some white lithium grease cakes and hardens with time.I
suppose it would have worked fine had I cleaned and regreased every year.but
sometimes I wait more than 5 years.my Barient 28+ sheet winches and my
secondary sheet winches are getting done this spring before launch.I plan to
use Pennzoil Marine 100% synthetic white marine grease on the gears and
Harken winch oil on the pawls and bearings
