Interesting stuff, eh?

Abstracts of title are cool. Touche' had a mortgage of $62,400 on it in
the early 80's. Not bad for a boat with a list price of ~$19,000 in 1971.
:)

Love old historical documents for the boat. I have IOR rating certificates
for Touche' from the 70's. PHRF certificates from way back.

Ok, I went ahead and ordered an Abstract of Title from the USCG, and it arrived
today.

From what I see, there was Preferred Mortgage taken out in 1981 for
$182,408.40.

It is not totally clear to me. This seems high. Maybe it included extras
and/or assumed interest. Playing around with a mortgage calculator, I see that
a $100k mortgage at 9% interest for 15 years gives a total cost of $182,568.
But in 1981, the home mortgage rates where around 15%. Working backwards from
a total cost of $182k at 15% interest gives a mortgage amount of $73,000.
Assuming that the original owners provided 20-25% down payment would give an
estimated sale price of $91k - $97k. Same ball park as what Ed noted. The
higher price may seem more reasonable. A search on Google shows a listing for
a 1981 LF38 for $89k and a listing of a 1983 for $110k in the Sep 1984 issue of
Yachting magazine.

Here is a summary of the USCG Abstract of Title-

I have two kids in expensive colleges and two more on deck. There’s no way I
could have afforded our boat if it had retained anything near its original
value over a 40-year period.

Besides, if all had new boats, we wouldn’t need this list.

Well, I paid about 20% fewer dollars in 2016, for both boat and trailer, than
the first purchaser paid in 1972 for the boat alone - not even considering the
difference in purchasing power between a 1972 dollar and a 2016 dollar.

I agree with you that what gets inflated is the money supply - the number of
dollars in circulation. It takes six more dollars in 2016 to buy the same thing
you could get in 1972 with one dollar; the purchasing power of a 1972 dollar
was six times that of a 2016 dollar.

If my boat had held 100% of its original value, and cost $120,000 in 2016
dollars due to inflation of the money supply over 44 years and lower purchasing
power of a 2016 dollar compared to a 1972 dollar, I sure as hell couldn’t have
afforded it :)

Cheers,
Randy

Patrick,

There's really only one place for those winches to be located. I think I
know the answer but not 100% sure.

The only clue is on the page entitled "Standard Loose Equipment". The
handwritten note says "2 #26 Barlow winches". When I purchased the
boat, it had Barlow 28's for the primaries and Barlow 26's for the
secondaries. I suspect the 26's were standard and the 1st owner knew he
was going to upgrade the primaries to 28's and put the 26's in the aft spot
for secondaries.

Re: Stus-List Landfall 38 original list price

2018-02-15 Thread Randy Stafford via CnC-List
According to C brochures that came with Grenadine, the C 30 MK I base price
as at September 13, 1976 was $27,200. As at September 1, 1977 it had increased
to $30,450.

I don’t have information on how much her first owner paid for her in 1972. I’d
guess ~$20,000 if the base price tracked with inflation. That’s ~$120,000 in
today’s dollars. And I bought the boat (and its trailer) for $16,500 two years
ago. Poor thing obviously depreciated a lot.

The original sale price on our 1994 C 37/40+ was +/- $225,000 (USD).

If it weren’t for depreciation, I couldn’t afford to sail!

Wow. That's $123,000 in today's dollars. (20k in 1971 = 123k today).
Important to compare real values, not nominal values - inflation over 47
years is very significant! Still not bad, a 35' production boat today goes
a bit more than that I think.

Would be interesting if anyone has a 1980's number. The 70's after about
'73 had massive inflation -
https://www.investopedia.com/articles/economics/09/1970s-great-inflation.asp

Dennis I suspect the note to not install genoa winches is because the owner
wanted a particular placement of them (the line after that says "put in the
boat loose w/ fastenings").

Subject: Stus-List Landfall 38 original list price

Hi,

I was asked a question about the Landfall 38 original list price, and I
realized I had no clue. Does anyone know what they were original going for in
1981 or thereabouts?
