Re: Stus-List Re-power and prop for 1981 C Landfall 38
Gary, I have a rebuilt Yanmar 3QM30 in my 81 LF38. The 3QM30 has about 5 extra HP than the newer Yanmar 3YM30, but I have found that the 3QM30 had more than enough power and extra to spare. A new 3YM30 was recommended by Yanmar as a replacement a few years back when I rebuilt the 3QM30. I don’t know about the Perkins, but the Yanmar was a reasonable DIY rebuild. Mine cost under $2,000. See: http://svjohannarose.blogspot.com/search/label/EngineWork <http://svjohannarose.blogspot.com/search/label/EngineWork> As for a prop, I have a Martec Eliptec folding propeller. It came original to me, and has been working fine. They are no longer made, but here are the marking on the prop. ELIPTEC LH18DX14P - 3" and "1-1/8” shaft. I've had an Atomic 4 for 20 years and a Yanmar 3JH2E in a different boat for 4. The Atomic 4 is definitely quieter, and as long as you take care of it (which is easy since you are on fresh water), I'd keep the A-4. That's presuming you've gone to the electronic ignition and done basic maintenance. Those who talk about Atomic Bombs, gasoline hazards, etc. just simply go too far IMHO.Sent from Samsung tablet. null___ Thanks everyone for supporting this list with your contributions. Stus-List Re-power and prop for 1981 C Landfall 38
I have a little envy of diesel boats as I have a 36 with atomic four and a reversing gear that has been a challenge for two years. I've found the issue after working with a local mechanic, but it looks like it will require the engine to be pulled to fully correct. At least I have learned to dock and pick up moorings well, but it is not recommended. We may have a workaround shortly, but it has made me think of moving to something like a used 30GM Yanmar. Besides cost and my interest to spend on sails instead, my other hesitancy is noise and vibration. I sail on Lake Lanier in Georgia, so fuel efficiency is not a concern as I can't travel all that far. The atomic four is pretty pleasant to cruise on a windless day, and I wonder how much louder and more vibration a diesel would bring. My Universal is a Kubota diesel that has been marinized, Like a Beta. I’ve discovered that almost anything that is not a specific part of the conversion (like the raw water pump or the heat exchanger) is pretty much available from a Kubota tractor dealer – and there are a lot of them. Re: Stus-List Re-power and prop for 1981 C Landfall 38
If you decide togo with a Beta you should think about getting the prop from them too. Beta sells the 'J' Prop, bronze three blade feathering prop, made in Italy. The pitch is adjustable (for fine tuning) with the prop installed and the boat in the water. A great product. We've had one on our boat with zero issues for over 12 years now. >From everything I have seen, the Beta Marine engines are a great option. One of the biggest problems with engine replacement is getting the bedding correct. Beta addresses this by designing mounts that are designed to be like for like with popular counterparts such as Yanmar and Universal. From what I recall the price is about half that of a Yanmar and without the cost of a re-bed the Beta is very competitively priced. I have a 30Hp Yanmar 3HM35F in my 37+ (40 ft) and often feel like it might be a little anemic. I would avoid turbo charged versions if at all possible. As for a feathering prop I have one (Max Prop). I like the engineering but if doing the annual maintenance is something you would rather avoid then a fixed prop might be a better choice. A fixed pitch prop requires a transmission that can freewheel/waterwheel or has a shaft break. Check with each manufacturer. The nice thing about the max prop or similar is that if you find that the boat is over pitched or under pitched you can adjust (not on the fly). The new max props can be adjusted by a diver in the water, older style require a haul out. I have all the power I need with my new Yanmar 3YM30AE. I’m not sure where you are getting your information that you need more than 30 HP. One big disadvantage of Beta is that there are not nearly as many parts distributors—this is more important if you cruise to foreign ports. Re: Stus-List Re-power and prop for 1981 C Landfall 38
I agree, get yourself a nice Beta 37 ½ HP diesel, and a 3 blade flex-a – fold. I replaced a 4-108 with one of those Kubota’s, the mounting was about 2 inches narrower, I just had to get some 3” aluminum (or maybe 4”) angle to replace the old steel angle. You will be amazed at how much lighter it is from the Perkins. An old slip neighbor also had a 39, he replaced his atomic with a 30 HP Yanmar, and was disappointed with the loss in power. But it will still get you from A to B. Repowered my old Bristol with a Beta. Kubota based engine with parts available all over the world inexpensively and was designed to be serviced easily (e.g. built in oil pump). Great engine and great service by Beta. Go with 38. Can upgrade your alternator and extra torque in a sloppy sea when you need it. You will love a feathering prop. David F. Re: Stus-List Re-power and prop for 1981 C Landfall 38
About 5 years ago I repowered with a Yanmar 3YM30AE which is a 30 HP engine and weighs much less and is quieter than than the previous 3HMF. I changed to a 3-blade fixed prop (16 x 13) and it is a good match. I would make the same change all over again if I was faced with the same situation. Good luck! Stus-List Re-power and prop for 1981 C Landfall 38
We are American expatriates who have sailed our 1981 C Landfall 38 to New Zealand a decade ago. It has a Perkins 4-108, which is on its last legs. It's not particularly reliable and is having trouble with overheating in the last few years. Also, it's very heavy and it is way too much power anyway. We're looking to replace it with a more reliable, modern power plant. So we have a couple of questions: What is the correct power? I understand most were sold with Yanmer 30hp 3HM or 3QM diesels. We like the idea of saving a lot of weight with a smaller engine than the Perkins, as well as ease of access, etc. However, we'd consider a 35 or 38 also if 30 horsepower wasn't enough power.
