Generally, there is a limit on the alternator (and the pump) regarding how much
power you can get off the engine using a single V-belt. Once you exceed around
80-90 A (some claim that you can go as high as 120 A) on the alternator, you
should start using either a dual V-belt or a serpentine belt solution. At some
point the single V-belt will start to slip and this is bad for the belt (and
pulleys).

The ElectroMAXX seems very well made. The price I've seen just seems

Yes it is the reference price point of auto equipment that makes the marine
conversion cost quite offensive.

You could just get the alternator with a V-belt pulley... Or change the
serpentine pulley to V-belt until a cost effective solution is found.

Re: Stus-List Serpentine conversion

2019-03-31 Thread Bill Coleman via CnC-List
That is what I am thinking. I am about to buy an alternator, and one with a
serpentine pulley, so I only would need the pulley on the crank, and water
pump. I realise Balmar, and I guess ElectroMAXX have put some time into
creating these kits for each engine, but they still seem a little pricy. When
you start looking at car pulleys, they are dirt cheap in comparison. Maybe I
can just modify a car pulley.

And to Ken’s point, I guess I don’t really need the serpentine, but I do want
it. V belts wear down quickly, makes a mess, are not as efficient, need
replacing two or four times sooner and need more attention than the
serpentine. I guess if you are born anal like me, your life is that much
harder.

Re: Stus-List Serpentine conversion

2019-03-31 Thread Ken Heaton via CnC-List
I think the mail application is for a high output alternator, over 100
amps, one that probably should have double belts to handle the load.
Apparently the serpentine belts have more traction than Vee belts so don't
have to be tightened as much, so they aren't as hared on water pump and
alternator bearings.

We have a 100 amp alternator now and it is a bit hard on belts.

If you have a stock alternator, you really don't need one of these
serpentine belt kits.
