I tried various ways to repair tanks, but my welded repairs (I fixed 3 tanks now by welding) have had no problems. Plastic welding is rather easy to do. The key is getting good plastic welding rods. I normally use a hot air welder, but if you are very careful, you can use make due with a propane torch. Though I highly recommend borrowing or buying a welder. Harbor Freight sells a reasonable welder for about $60, and since they always have 20-25% off coupons, it would cost about $45. Small leaks are easy to fix. If you have a more serious repair, like a long crack due to poor structural support, then repair and split it with some 316 stainless mesh. I purchased a package of 1/8" LDPE welding rods from Grainger. As I recall, it was 50 rods for $15. I also purchased 316 mesh from Grainger. I have details on my blog. Below is the link. Re: Stus-List Water Tank Woes [again] - Welding Question
I 100% with Paul's comments below. By the way, it will likely take more plastic welding rods than you think. In a pinch I cut up some Tupperware type lids that were labeled LDPE and they sufficed when I ran short. That said, not all LDPE is the same, and HDPE will definitely NOT work for welding LDPE.Hoping you find this helpful, Bruce Sent from Samsung tablet. It is not simply high or low density—the tank was made from LLDPE and rods must be the same material. Re: Stus-List Water Tank Woes
Dennis — have you forgotten about the boat I worked on several years back that was struck by lightning? It was a really hot day, and the second day of a charter; the boat got struck, and had to be towed into the marina. I went aboard the next morning; it was about 100F below, and reeked to high heaven. It turns out the boat had a flexible holding tank up under the v-berth; the lightning came down the mast and side-flashed through the half-full holding tank, causing it to explode. The resulting “liquid” cooked below in the hot sun for a day and a half. It took them quite a while to get rid of that smell. Okay, so maybe an extreme example… :^) — Fred Fred Street -- Minneapolis S/V Oceanis (1979 C&C Landfall 38) -- Bayfield, WI > On Jul 7, 2016, at 7:12 PM, Dennis C. via CnC-List > wrote: > > For some reason, flex tanks don't have a strong following. Re: Stus-List Water Tank Woes
Let me be the first to post about a failed flex\bladder tank. Pegasus had 2, 1 for black water (leaked), the other was a square tank under the v berth. Could only put 10 gallons in a 40 gallon tank. Rest was air. Replaced both with plastic much happier. Harry, Kracor is a brand and they are molded LLDPE plastic. Welded tanks are made differently and they are either LDPE or HDPE. Molded tanks are generally higher quality than welded tanks. Custom Marine Plastic in Bristol, RI has welded Kracor tanks for me, so it is a successful method. Also consider drilling it out and replacing it with a modified Marelon thru hull. Stus-List Water Tank Woes
One of my water tanks continues to leak and it appears to be where the barbed elbow fitting exits the tank . I've wrapped the threads with Teflon tape [both pink and white], but it fails to make a good seal. This is my 3rd attempt to fix it. The tank is a Kracor brand, and the tank's walls and bottom appear to be quite thick. I have observed "weeping" only right around the hole where the elbow fitting is screwed into it. Re: Stus-List Water Tank Woes - 30-II
I had a fitting on my tank plastic welded, it's good as new. Since you're taking the tank out anyway it's a good time to clean it .. filled mine with water and bleach and let it stand that way overnight then rinsed and repeated. My tank was really smelly, the PO left it with plumbing anti-freeze inside for a few years :/ After that I let it sit full of baking soda and crumpled newspapers over the winter and the smell is gone. The original tanks can be weld repaired using LLDPE rods. Any plastic welder can do this. Re: Stus-List Water Tank Woes - 30-II
I'm including a link to a video about a TAP Plastics product that works on polyethylene tanks. Note this product will only work if you use the flame surface treatment shown in the video, starting at about 2:10. Without proper preparation through flame treatment it won't work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-9yhanz5DE You may also be able to take the tank out and have it plastic welded. I have no experience with that though. Ken H. Stus-List Water Tank Woes - 30-II
Hello Listers, My starboard water tank has sprung a leak. The tank was made by Kracor, and it appears the leak is coming from the elbow joint. Any 30-II owners have/had this problem? How difficult is removing the tank?? It doesn't appear to be too difficult, but I'd be most interested to hear of others' experiences. Also, I'm not sure silicone will adhere well to the tank. Any thoughts on other adhesives? Thanks, Pete W.
