Stus-List Email List or Forum

2015-03-13 Thread Stu via CnC-List
Recently, some of our subscribers have indicated that they would like to have a
“Forum” similar to “cruisersforum” or “sailnet” instead of an email list (like
this one).

PROS:
1. Eliminate the costs related to the email list
2. Follow a thread easier without having to read multiple emails.
3. Easier to find past, archived messages and threads.
4. Possible addition of public and private photo albums.
5. Easily moderated by more than one person. Threads can be deleted and
undesirable subscribers blocked.
6. No more 20-30 emails a day. Visit the site at your convenience and view the
latest topics since your last visit.

CONS:
1. Forum software runs from free to around $250 depending on additional
enhancements.
2. Might (???) require additional disk space and bandwidth on hosting site.
()
3. Installation – I’ve done it before and it does take some time. And a bit
more time involved to get it tweeked to perfection.

Bottom line – would you rather have a FORUM or continue using this list? It
does not matter to me.

Stus-List Email List or Forum

2015-03-13 Thread Robert Boyer via CnC-List
I much prefer a forum! It would end the repeated copying of text and resending
it over and over. I've read the notice to mariners about ice on the northern
Chesapeake Bay about 10 times now because listers think they have to copy it I
guess so that everyone knows what they are responding to. There are pages and
pages of unnecessary repeated information on this list.

On a forum, the discussion would be on a topic and it would just flow like a
conversation. As far as I'm concerned, a forum is a lot better. Just google
cruisers forum and look at their format...

Stus-List Email List or Forum

2015-03-13 Thread Robert Boyer via CnC-List
Stu's original listing was copied and resent 11 times in 12 messages! Does
everyone really like this? It is completely unnecessary and would probably be
eliminated in a forum format. That's really the primary change--the people
would be the same.

Stus-List Email List or Forum

2015-03-13 Thread Robert Boyer via CnC-List
In a forum you can make your individual settings such that postings on a topic
you are subscribed to will be emailed to you when each posting is made. I
think you can respond to the posting on a forum via email, so I don't
understand how it would leave Wally out of the picture.

The forum would have a lot better search features.

My iPhone and my iPad have been set to "thread view" and it doesn't eliminate
the copied text. However, if there is a setting in an email account that
eliminates copied text, I'd be interested in hearing about it.

Stus-List email list or forum

2015-03-14 Thread Bradley Lumgair via CnC-List
i'm new to this list, but have found it frustrating to try to search for
subject matter, rather than re-asking the same questions over and over again,
until someone posted how to search from google. I'm somewhat less frustrated
now and find the list easier to use. In my experience the forum format has been
easier.

There are plenty of forums. This list is different / better because of the C&C

Re: Stus-List Email List or Forum

2015-03-13 Thread Burt Stratton via CnC-List
Stu, the list is far better than any forum I have “joined” but if the forum is
easier for you I would support it

Subject: Stus-List Email List or Forum

Re: Stus-List Email List or Forum

2015-03-13 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
I guess it has never bothered me cause my gmail and Gmail client auto hide
the quoted text AND they auto group emails with the same subject. It's not
always necessary but sometimes it is nice to be able to see what exact
referance someone was making simply by looking at the quoted text.

I like the fact that I don't have to go to a forum app or website to see
the message stream or to participate.
I like being able to quickly and easily take the conversion of list and
then back again without leaving the email client.
I like how lightweight and ubiquitous email is. No fancy graphics to take
up bandwidth.
Maybe people think it's creepy but I like that we all have each others
email and can easily contact one another with something off list via email
if needed. Edd with Star Trek stuff, Fred with electronics questions, Joel
for offshore races and Jake for a fix from a Midnight Mistress.

Warm regards to all,
Josh Muckley

PS:
Just so you all know to what I'm refering I've quoted the text from the
previous email.

Re: Stus-List Email List or Forum

2015-03-13 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List

We each have the option to change our email settings so the original message
string is not included in the new email when we reply to a message. That would
eliminate all the repeated information and the very long message strings that
cause so much trouble and band width cost for Stu.

Sometimes I like to include all or part of the message to which I am
responding, so others will know the context of my email. I find that I am
frequently not responding to the last message on a given topic. But, hey, I’m
old and forget to delete all the unwanted part of the string.

My problem with a forum is that I need to find the time to go look at it and
see what is being discussed. Messages from the list, OTOH, are in my inbox and
actually give me something to look forward to when I open my email.

The pros for a forum are what Stu said.

A few major pros for the list are that it can be viewed on any platform, can be
read off-line, requires much less bandwidth etc.

I would say that it works fine, as is.

3. Installation – I’ve done it before and it does take some time. And a bit

Someone mentioned a yahoo group. I am a member of a few and they send messages
(e-mails, like this list), but at the same time allow to participate in them
like in a Forum (on a web site, following threads, allowing photo albums etc.).

I already voted for the list, but possibly that option can be investigated, as
well.

On the flip side, let's not overestimate the bandwidth required for including
the original text. All these messages were in the teens of kB, very tiny
compared to the current internet speeds and sizes.

2015-03-14 Thread Ron Ricci via CnC-List
Stu,

First, thank you for all the work you have put into setting up the list and
maintaining it. I am glad this topic has come up. It is somewhat difficult
to follow multiple emails which usually repeat what has already been said.
If it could be done, I'd enthusiastically vote for a forum.

The town that I live in has a social networking forum called Nextdoor
Harvard. See https://harvardma.nextdoor.com/about_us/. We have about 6000
residents of which about 2000 have signed up for Nextdoor Harvard. There is
no cost to operate the forum and it is very flexible.

I get one email a day that summarizes new topics and new replies for that
day. (One can select getting new topics as they are posted.) If you reply
to a topic, you'll automatically get other replies as they occur. There is
a method to control who can be a member. You can browse by topic. There is
provision to store documents for download and a classified section.

If you are interested, I'll contact Nextdoor to see if they would allow a
'neighborhood' of boat owners. I can also find out from the guy who
maintains the forum, what effort is required.

Re: Stus-List Email List or Forum

2015-03-14 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
Ron,

I understand that you get notices via email but can you participate in the
"forums" via email?

For me, the strength of the list is that I don't have to do anything above
and beyond checking/reading/sending email. I can control the stream with
all of the traditional email routing rules.

Users might find it useful to set up a rule which automatically moves ANY
email with "cnc" in the "FROM:" field into a new folder called "C&C List".
I did this when I started using the list and now it is almost like I have 2
email addresses. I never get C&C stuff in my main email stream. I could
also turn off the notifications and/or sync for the C&C List folder so that
I only looked at it when I felt like it not because it kept notifying me.

Others have given directions for searching the wealth of knowledge by using
some google magic and limiting the search criteria to the cnc-list site. I
can't recall the exact syntax.

The emails are also kept in my email archives till I delete them. There
have been plenty of times I've been able to answer my own questions simply
by searching my own email archives...on my phone...without internet access.

Re: Stus-List email list or forum

2015-03-14 Thread Della Barba, Joe via CnC-List
BTW - The most "C&C" like forum I know of is the Moyer Marine Atomic 4 forum.
They have friendly people, support the Atomic 4 very well, and keep the flames,
trolls, and spammers off. They OWN THE FORUM, it is not a hosted by
Google/Yahoo/Facebook/etc.
I run a website for a flying event < http://www.tangierhollyrun.com/> and I
totally gave up on a forum. I either had to spend time approving users or it
got totally taken over by Nigerian Royalty with banking issues. We reverted to
an email list that exists for pilots in the DC area. They also debated going
Forum and stayed with email.

BTW - I am in mailing list hell with a group for flying amateur radio
operators. I started it on Yahoo a very long time ago - maybe the mid/late 90s,
and it pretty much died by the year 2000. In 2014 a bunch of spammers got on
somehow and I cannot kill the list. Whatever email address I had back then is
long gone and Yahoo WILL NOT let me access the list controls anymore. There is
literally no way I can kill it. We need to OWN the means of production here, if
I can apply Marxist theory to emails.

There is or was an archive, but since I've been here from the start I just
use Microsoft Outlook and store all my emails in yearly files. It is easy to
set up an email rule that directs all cnc list mail to a separate folder, as
others have mentioned.

i'm new to this list, but have found it frustrating to try to search for
subject matter, rather than re-asking the same questions over and over
again, until someone posted how to search from google. I'm somewhat less
frustrated now and find the list easier to use. In my experience the forum
format has been easier.

2015-03-14 Thread Dave Godwin via CnC-List
I vote list.

I am on a whole passel of forums and although I like them just fine, if I have
to remember yet another forum name and password sequence to log in with I’ll
shoot myself…

I have an "all Mac, all the time” setup and my C&C list emails use a Apple
account conditional rule to shunt off to a C&C folder. There the emails are
grouped by subject and I can open that grouping up and pick and chose. Pretty
bog standard email software.

Forums are great but I think that they need a critical mass to be effective.
This list isn’t really that large given the number of regular responders and
for me has a nice feel to it. With only a few voices in the forum it might seem
kinda empty.

Although, the thought of a dedicated forum category labeled “Foredeck Cow” has
a certain appeal to it…

Re: Stus-List Email List or Forum

2015-03-14 Thread Ron Ricci via CnC-List
Josh,

Posting something new requires going online. This ensures starts the topic.
Once you get the email notice, you can add to any topic on the notice.
You'll also get notice of other replies. While you can keep copies of
emails, this forum really needs you to be online to use all the features.

I do have copies of emails on my phone but the amount of info kept is
limited without an internet connection. I just tried putting my phone in
airplane mode and turning off Wi-Fi. There's now nothing available in my
gmail 'All Mail'.

As a technical reference I like how a closed forum works. Who knows, I may need
to look up the best way to clean off Marvel Mystery Oil someday.

For the mix of technical, Q&A, social and banter the email digest works well
for me.
I do tend to read in batches, sometimes days apart, so end up responding to
things late.

I would contribute to adding a forum to the CNC site. The key points for me
would be:

- simple password protection for at least posting
- ability to upload reasonable sized photos
- optional configurable email notification when something is posted
- ability to update / edit / add to something like a technical document

I understand this has some overlap with the existing website.

I am a relative newbie here, but I would very much prefer a FORUM and I would
certainly make a donation to help cover the costs.

Frankly, I am a little surprised that there is so much support for the list
over a forum format (though I obviously respect opposing points of view) .
Stupid question: is it possible to have both so that emails sent on a
particular subject show up as posts on a thread identified by that subject?

I for one do not mind the same "questions" or conversations being reposted. I
like "watching" the conversations to pick up tidbits from those on the list far
more experienced / skilled than I. And working on the "just in time"
principle, someone invariably posts a relevant question just as I am about to -
or should - undertake a project or maintenance activity.

I probably don't know enough about how forums work, but I personally like the
ability to quickly browse unread email strings from the list to see which I
want to read. I doubt if I would go to a forum except when I needed something
from the group - and if others' actions are similar, the numbers and qualities
of responses to any questions posed could be much reduced.

That's already been addressed. In short, yes. Almost all forums have a
means for the users to be updated via email. Individuals can usually
select what triggers an email notification. The thing that sets the forum
apart (and is undesirable) is that a response to a post would still require
logging into the forum.

We vote list and a great big thank you to Stu for keeping this going.

To make things easier we have OUTLOOK rule set so anything from list goes to
its own folder which is then arranged by conversation. We also have a separate
folder to receive posts we want to keep for future reference. Typically check
once a day. Easy to read, then delete all I don’t want. Also, doesn’t the
photo album keep posts in a forum format as well??

I am rarely a poster but a frequent viewer. I would greatly prefer a forum to
the list. I use a forum to indulge one of my other expensive hobbies (see
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/1-porsche-technical-forums/). I find it to be a
much more user-friendly format. Also, there may be some savings in that you
can incorporate the classifieds into one of the forums. But don't take this
the wrong way. I greatly appreciate this list and all the work that it takes

Re: Stus-List Email List or Forum

2015-03-14 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
Seems to me the recurring reason for preference for a forum is simplicity in
searching the list archive when you have a question. As I recall that is pretty
easy using Google – though I use the function so seldom I’ve forgotten exactly
how to do it.

I have a subfolder in my email called “Boat Stuff”. If I see a message with
content I feel I will want to access later – maybe a project or a technique or
a recommendation for a certain piece of gear – the message gets moved to the
“Boat Stuff” folder and gets archived on my own hard drive.

I think the last time I actually searched for something in the list archive was
when my hard drive fried and I lost my old “Boat Stuff” folder.

And I feel I should point out that, were this a forum format, there is little
likelihood that anyone on the list except Stu would have seen the question that
you asked in your post. In list format we all get asked the question.

With List format, the recent discussion that started with a comment on the VOR
grounding morphed into a discussion of proper navigation techniques, the value
of paper charts, and what is actually required to be on your boat. In my
opinion that sort of information is useful to everyone. But in Forum format one
would need to search for the VOR grounding in order to stumble onto the chart
discussion, AFIK.

I am no expert - but believe you have to set up your email account as an IMAP
account rather than POP3. With IMAP, the various mail clients are synchronized
so that if you delete an email on one device, it is deleted from all. (I have 4
devices from which I can read / send emails - so it was critical for me to have
this feature). I don't use gmail - I have my own domain with godaddy and it was
not difficult to set the account as IMAP - not sure if gmail can be so easily
configured

Jonathan — you’re right. Setting your mail client up as IMAP rather than as a
POP client means that all messages will stay on the email server, and then be
copied to all IMAP clients of that account when they connect. I’ve got my
Gmail account set up that way on my MacBook Pro, iPhone and iPad, and
everything stays synchronized; so it appears to work for Google Mail. I’ve
also got several personal and work email accounts set up that way.

With POP, as soon as a client connects, the message is downloaded from the
server to that client only; there’s no good way to keep things synchronized.

Re: Stus-List Email List or Forum

2015-03-15 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
Actually that is not strictly true. My laptop, using Outlook, is set to
remove messages from the POP server. It is a setting you chose when setting
up the email account.

I also use whatever email client comes standard on my IPad. When I set up
the mail account on it, I chose the setting to not delete messages when
downloaded.

That way I see all the messages on my laptop and can chose which to archive,
delete, etc. The SPAM blocker for either Windows or MacAfee seems to work a
lot better than twhatever is on the IPad, so I get a lot fewer letters from
Nigerian royalty and folks in Russia with a miracle cure for my diabetes.

I do need to keep my IPad turned off (as opposed to sleep mode) so it does
not periodically download messages on the server. But when I am on the boat
or carrying only the IPad, I turn it on and it downloads whatever messages
are on the server - and leaves them there to be downloaded on the laptop at
some later time.

What I understand you to be saying, though, is that with all Apple devices,
and with all set up on an IMAP account, you can look at the messages you
have on any of the devices. And when you delete a message after looking at
it on the IPad, you will not see it again on the phone, MacBook, etc.?

Close. Does not have to be all Apple products to sync with IMAP. I have Outlook
on my home PC, and on my work Laptop. I have an iPhone and an IPad mini. All
retrieve emails from the server, but if I delete an email on one device, it
will be deleted on all the others. Likewise I can see "sent" messages that were
sent from one device, on all others.

I prefer the list.

There are plenty of forums. This list is different / better because of the C&C
focus and limited participation (not invaded by non C&C owners and alumni).

Definitely vote list.

I get to see every email under its own tab with Gmail and I chose which I
want to read. Many times I am reading not because I have an issue but to
learn a little more about my wonderful boat!

I know that I would not travel to a separate site and log in to scroll
through topics on a forum.

I like the idea of the gofundme account too. Keep us posted on that!

I like the list. Use a separate address for it so regular emails are not
affected. Sometimes a lot of volume but no big deal to delete what is not
interesting to me. Cheers Stu, and thanks again.

I have some thru-hulls sitting around that have never been used. I'll find a
good one and pick a good price for it. Someone can send the money straight to
