Re: Stus-List water missing from somewhere

2015-09-26 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
My tanks are ~20 gallons each and if they seem clean (no smells or tastes)
then I'll put 1 tbsp of bleach in the fill hose prior to filling. I let
the water run from the fill hose for quite a while prior to filling the
tanks. If the tank has gotten sour and needs disinfected then I'll use 2
tbsp prior to fill. Too much chlorine will ruin rubber components in the
plumbing system. 1 tbsp does not add a significant taste or smell but 2
will. Remember to use unscented, pure bleach.

I think advice to replace the pipes is simply an age thing. If one is
leaking, how long will it take for them all to leak? I subscribe to a
different school of thought, if it ain't broke don't fix it!

Do you folks suggest replacing the 30 year-old plumbing lines just because
of the life forms you suspect may be growing in there? Or some other reason?
When I got my boat, my freshwater system smelled like the best parts of a
swamp, and the filters were all plugged up with biological goop. I went
through a number of treatments, bleach, all kinds of stuff. It actually
seemed to work pretty well, everything smells and tastes fine now, although
I'm sure there are probably some nooks and crannies still harboring life.

Jim,

If your water lines are the original grey tubing then replacing the lines are a
good idea. I would also recommend replacing the fill hose(they get pretty
funky and are cheap to replace). Take the time to inspect the water tanks. I
found a crack midway up on the tank in the V-birth. I removed this tank and
now use the V-birth space for extra storage. I am in the process of replacing
all of my lines with Pex.

Good idea on using that area for stowage.

Unless you sail with a mid-wife I don't see much
point in having a birthing area on the boat. :)

Hi Mark,

After I sent the message a thought occurred,
"maybe that's why the water broke?" ... but that
might be a little to obscure for the list so I just laughed out loud at myself.

Sometimes, I'm easily amused.

Re: Stus-List water missing from somewhere

2015-09-24 Thread svpegasus38

Jim, On my LF38 all tanks have a single vent line that goes to sink in
head. The lines for water go to a manifold under galley sink. I had leaks in
both tanks under setee and no tank under V-berth (was plumbed). Had Marine
Sanitation here in Seattle plastic weld in new bungs. Bought a 19 gallon tank
for V-berth (only size that would fit through door) all is good now. I would
pull floor boards, fill 1 tank at a time and look for water running. It might
ne time to replace all water lines anyway.

goes crazy.  fill the tanks up and all is cool.  obviously there is a leak
