Whenever any gamebird (including Chukars and quail) is found outside of
known ranges consideration should include whether it is an escaped species.
As I noted in a post regarding an exotic quail species seen on the southern
Front Range last month, the Colorado Wildlife Commission approved in 2008 a
request from a hunting dog training group to allow the release of privately
owned game birds on State Wildlife Areas as part of hunting dog training
programs. In the request the group noted that they use "mallard ducks,
chukar, pheasant or bobwhite quail and, many times, trapped wild pigeons or
homing pigeons" in their dog training. They noted that other hunting groups
would like to release unspecified game birds for dog training also. The
approval does not restrict the release of game birds to those normally found
in an area. Clearly some of these game birds will get away and such species
as Chukar and Bobwhite Quail will be found by birders all over the state in
future years.

Additionally, game birds escape from breeders. I can attest to this as I
found a Chukar on the east side of Canon City a year or so ago. After some
investigation, I found that they were being raised by the Colo Dept of
Corrections on their property a mile or so from where I saw this Chukar. I
have read that Chukar are easy to keep and breed plus a number of hunters
enjoy the challenge they provide in hunting them so they are bred in a
number of locations around the state. By the way, Chukars are not native to
Colorado-like the big dove that has expanded it's range across most of the
state, they are native to Eurasia. They were introduced by the CDOW in 1938
on the western slope to feed the desire of hunters for this species.

Additionally, there are some who enjoy raising unusual and exotic
gamebirds. These can be generally be found anywhere that allows raising
poultry and likely in locations where it is less than legal also. The odds
are that the Littleton Chukar is an escapee. I don't know how they taste
but they are members of the partridge family are likely good to eat.

[cobirds] Norma Erickson Weld County

2009-09-02 Thread Norma Erickson
At my home north of Greeley I have been seeing one and two hummingbirds for the
past few weeks. Always immature males and females. Mostly Calliopes. Had a
Broad-tailed for a couple of days. The last couple of days I have a young male
Rufous. That has liven up the place. He would rather fight than eat. He patrols
the area and the Calliope is so excited that it flies very close to me and
feeds two feet in front of me. Wish the season were longer.

[cobirds] Common Poorwills - Douglas Co.

2009-09-02 Thread Kirk Huffstater
I've been hearing Common Poorwills nearly every evening at my house all summer,
and now they're calling in the morning as well; I've heard them the past 4
mornings. I've also seen them sitting on my asphalt driveway on 3 separate
evenings in the last 2 weeks; a single bird twice, and 2 birds another time.
Strangely, I've only heard Common Nighthawks twice this year, both times being
back in early summer.

[cobirds] Kingbirds on the move - Teller County

2009-09-02 Thread Jeff J Jones
A walk around Manitou
Lake (fee - $5) today at noon found many Tyrannus kingbirds, which
historically, we do not get up here outside of fall migration. Both western
kingbirds and eastern kingbirds were in abundance flycatching over the
beaver ponds.

In addition, my first (in 21 years) double-crested cormorant at Manitou
Lake! Juvenal plumaged.

Also, found a few lincoln's sparrows, apparently on the move. A few gray
catbirds. Otherwise, the regular fanfare.

At my home, north of Woodland Park, a green-tailed towhee continues to hang
out in my shrubs and pond. Lots of broad-tailed and rufous hummers,
occasional cassin's finch, evening grosbeaks, band-tailed pigeons, chipping
sparrows, all three nuthatches, loads of imm juncos and the usual.

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch RMBO Banding 2 Sep 2009

2009-09-02 Thread brian_gibb...@juno.com

Hi Cobirders

NOTICE--The ranch will be closed to all recreation on Saturday 26 Sep 2009
(that includes birding and banding)

A very active day today, I was a little surprised with clear weather all night.
Best bird was the Black-and-White Warbler that flew into a net right in front
of us. We banded 71 birds of 19 species today.

Birds Banded:
Mourning Dove
Western Wood-Pewee 7
Hammond's Flycatcher 2
Dusky Flycatcher 4
Cordilleran Flycatcher
Plumbeous Vireo
Cassin's Vireo 2
Warblering Vireo 4
Black-capped Chickadee
Red-breasted Nuthatch
White-breasted Nuthatch
House Wren 2
Gray Catbird 2
Yellow Warbler 6
Black-and-White Warbler
MacGillivray's Warbler 4
Wilson's Warbler 28
Western Tanager
Chipping Sparrow 2

Also around the banding station was an American Redstart and Olive-sided
Flycatcher. Around the HQ area in Pueblo county I found a Northern Waterthrush.

[cobirds] Re: Chico Basin Ranch RMBO Banding

2009-09-02 Thread Cyndy Kulp

Brian,
Do you have a regular schedule for when you are banding? We could
possibly bring a group from Aiken Audubon (Colo. Springs) on a
Saturday or Sunday. We had wanted to go to the ranch but could not
find an experienced leader for this fall, so maybe just a trip to
watch some banding would be fun.
Let me know your schedule and also how long in the fall you think the
migration will be good.
Thanks,
Cyndy Kulp

I got to see the Jaeger this morning at about 6:30 along with Coen Dexter,
Brenda Wright, and Vic Zerbi. We watched it fly around for about 20-30
minutes before it went behind a large pile of gravel and we didn't see it
anymore. Brenda and Vic took good photos. Thank you Dave Leatherman for
finding this first west slope record! And, thanks to Dean and Mona for

[cobirds] Re: Nighthawk

2009-09-02 Thread Norm

This bird reminds me of a well-studied and much debated bird at the
Lamar Cemetery two years ago. The debate of course was whether it was
a common or lesser. The final decision was a common which I conclude
this bird is as well. I eliminate lesser for two main reasons. The
location of the wing bars are well forward of the tertials where they
are located for a common. For lesser, they are at the end of the
tertials. The wing bars are bold which also favors Common. The
primaries on a lesser have small buffy spots anterior to the wing
bars. This part of the wing is well seen. On the first picture, the
tail extends beyond the tail which is another pint for common while on
a lesser the end of the primaries should be even with the tail. This
would also rule against the only other choice of an Antillean
Nighthawk, which would certainly be extremely unlikely. The overall
reddish coloration is also problematic for Lesser. The reddish
coloration and a pale slash on the side of the neck favor a rufous
adult which, I have never seen in Colorado, instead of a southwest
juvenile. The rufous adult is from the southeast US. This bird is a
little pale underneath for a typical rufous bird. It would be
interesting to get further comments on the race.

It appears to be a female as I don't see a white subterminal bar on
the retrices, but could be a juvenile on this point.

he, Coen Dexter and Jason Beason are currently looking at the
