[cobirds] Cassin's Vireo singing and Black Phoebe on Canon City Riverwalk
Today (Friday) I listened to a Cassin's Vireo singing on the Canon City Riverwalk. Though I spotted it a few times I could not get a photo of it. Also Plumbeous Vireos on the Riverwalk as well as good numbers of other neotropical migrants including many Yellow-rumped Warblers. Lazuli Buntings were more vocal today, I heard 3-4 singing along the bluff trail. And I saw a Black Phoebe perched on the other side of the river from the half mile section of the Canon City Riverwalk, a location I have seen 1-2 Black Phoebes several times in past month or so. I had time to upload on my Birds and Nature bloghttp://birdsandnature.blogspot.com/a short video clip of one of the Gray Flycatchers showing it's tail dipping behavior--and it shows the bird lost it's balance and almost fell off the perch it was on at Sell's Lake. I have also uploaded some photos showing the beautiful colors of violet and green on Violet-green Swallows I got Tuesday when the late snowstorm had many birds including swallows down . Marilyn McBurney from RMBO had stated this about this species in her post the other day, I think we fail to appreciate how truly gorgeous these birds are because we are usually looking at them as they streak through the sky or are perched really high on a telephone wire. I totally agree More birds but too late tonight to post. [cobirds] San Luis Valley Birdz
Yesterday, my wife Lisa and I along with John Stump took a run at the big day record for the San Luis Valley. The challenge is to document/observe as many species in one day as possible within the San Luis Valley. The previous record from 2006 was 143 species. Yesterday, we set a new high count with 153 species! Highlites included Orchard Oriole, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Northern Waterthrush, Bobolink, Black Terns, Sanderlings, Flammulated Owl, Saw-whet Owl, Mountain Plover, Black-throated Gray Warbler, and Gray Catbird. We finished at 11:00 pm after going and finding owls. What a day. John Rawinski Monte Vista, CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] BW Warbler Black Phoebe, Boulder Co
All, This morning the east CU Campus was quite birdy, with 7 warbler species including a female Black and White at the small bridge which connects the two ponds. Also present were two Chimney Swifts. Peter Burke found, and showed me, the Black Phoebe on the west side of the Hwy 287 bridge over Boulder Creek. It spent much time around the small backwater to the south, but Peter said it went under the bridge a couple of times: nest building? I don't know what county I'm in…, near Greeley for what that's worth. At Loloff reservoir, there are hundreds of phalarope and at least a couple redneck phalarope. There's nothing I think people would be real surprised that, but I thought it would be a good place for people to catch up on their phalarope. There are also: Ruddy duck- at least 100 Cinnamon, blue and green winged teal Avocet- about 30 Shovelers Mallards Killdeer Pintail Gadwall Robins feeding young in the nest under the walkway for the crude oil House sparrow Western meadowlark Guess that's about got it for what I have seen here. By the way, I was at Jackson State Park yesterday. It is very full as is the outflow ditch. I didn't see shorebirds other then spotted Sandpiper in the Killdeer. [cobirds] Prothonatory Warbler , Fountain Creek ( El Paso )
CO birders : Bill Maynard found a Prothonotary Warbler earlier this afternoon at the northern end of Fountain Creek Park , near mile marker 18 ( where the Woodcock was seen earlier this year ) . A small stream runs close to the path and the bird is often seen alongside the stream with several Northern Waterthrushes . There is a hatch of small insects which is attracting multiple Yellow-rumped and Yellow Warblers , so don't be fooled by the Yellow Warblers which have a subtly different song to PROW . [cobirds] Hooded x Yellow Warbler ??--Roxborough
This morning, I to look for the Hooded Warbler in Roxborough. Thanks to Greg Pasquariello's great directions I was able to easily locate the bird. Several time I noticed the lack of tolerence the bird had for a male Yellow Warbler. After taking a good look at the bird I think I understand why. This bird has the hood of the Hooded and the breast streaking of the male Yellow Warbler. The undertail coverts are a mix of the two. Does anyone know of documentation of this hybrid mix? [cobirds] RMBO Banding at Chico Basin Ranch, El Paso Co.
Last weekend's weather front brought lots of birds to the banding station at Chico Basin Ranch (fee area). Numbers banded were up from last Saturday all through this week. We did not catch our first Swainson's Thrush until Tuesday the 15th, later than usual; they were observed both Sunday the 11th and Monday the 12th, however. Wednesday's tally was 94 birds banded, with a tie for species high of 21 Gray Catbirds and 21 Chipping Sparrows. Thursday brought in FOS Common Poorwill, Veery, and Blue Grosbeak, for a total of 54 banded. The weekend produced 53 birds banded on Friday, one of which was a FOS Rock Wren and Common Grackle. On Saturday we banded 69 birds, including one FOS Gray-cheeked Thrush and one Curve-billed Thrasher. [cobirds] Pueblo and El Paso County birds 5/17
It was a long day of birding today, starting as the sun came up in Pueblo City Park, where I heard and then saw a male BLACKPOLL WARBLER, near the Frisbee Creek part of the park. In the NE part of the park, while birding with Kara Carragher, Lisa Edwards, and Maggie Boswell, we saw two BROAD-WINGED HAWKS and two GREEN HERONS. The four of us headed to Chico Basin Ranch (fee area). Our highlights follow, many of these were seen by other people (John Drummond and other folks), before we saw them. El Paso County (part of Chico): Blackpoll Warbler - 1 male Ovenbird - 1 Rose-breasted Grosbeak - 1 first year male Veery -1 Broad-winged Hawk - 1 BAND-TAILED PIGEON - 1 (maybe only about the 3rd Chico Basin Ranch sighting) -- I took a couple photos Pueblo County (part of Chico)-- along with several people: Blackpoll Warbler - 1 female Ovenbird - 1 Townsend's Warbler - 1 White-throated Sparrow - 1 Veery - 1 (Lisa and others saw it, I missed it) We saw Mel Goff's bull snake too near the HQ Willows. Fountain Creek Regional Park, El Paso County -- thanks to Bill Maynard for letting us know, about his nice find. PROTHONOTARY WARBLER - 1 female Blackpoll Warbler - 2 males, 1 female Northern Waterthrush - 1 singing American Redstart - 1 first year male Rose-breasted Grosbeak - 1 full adult male Hopefully I didn't forget anything, thanks ladies for letting me join in for a fun day of birding. In summary, I saw 6 Blackpoll Warblers today, they seem to be all over right now! [cobirds] Bay-breasted Warbler at Two Buttes, Baca County
Birders, With the Bent on Birding tour, I found an adult male Bay-breasted Warbler this morning below Two Buttes Reservoir (Baca County). The warbler was at the east end of the woods, east of the easternmost cliffs on the north side of the road, about even with where the cliffs come closest to the ponds on the south side of two Buttes Creek. Forgive me for not giving details of other birds we have seen so far. We've seen most of the birds seen and reported elsewhere in SE Colorado this weekend, and one group even hiked up Two Buttes (4,711 feet) today. I think we've seen around 150 species of birds, including 17 species of warbler, no small feat with up to 45 participants in attendance. I'm tired enough that I don't want to mess around with the list thing right now. Duane Nelson Las Animas, Bent County, CO --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! [cobirds] Marston reservoir,Denver, and my yd./Jefferson
Hi all, In my yd. on 5/15 was 1, Veery, on 5/16, I had 1, Swainson's Thrush. Today in the yd. were 2 m. Western Tanagers, and many Chipping Sparrows and Yellow-rumped Warblers. I live in Jefferson County, in Littleton. Marston Reservoir,[Denver County] on 5/15 and 5/16 had 6 Willets. Today was frustrating. I saw Ibis on the eastern bank of the shrinking lake but the minute I stopped the car to look with my scope, all the Ibis flew north. There must have been at least 90 individuals. Since I could not get a good look at them who knows if Glossy Ibis were in the flock ? The Willet and Ibis were both seen from Bow Mar Dr. in the NE corner of the lake Happy Birding ! We were lucky to run into Duane at Lamar and later at Two Buttes. He let us know about the Bay-breasted Warbler near where were at. Kay found it and was eye to eye with the bird. We watched for about two minutes, lost the bird, and re-found it for another thirty second Chamber of Commerce look. Awesome find Duane, thanks! Great birds in SE Colorado today. [cobirds] Dowitcher ID assistance - Teller County
Lots of birds at Manitou Lake and along Trout Creek lately as with everywhere else in Colorado right now. Had a dowitcher today that I believe to be Long-billed for 2 reasons: 1) most likely dowitcher in spring migration in CO, and 2) a couple scapulars with white fringe. Click here for dowitcher photos https://www.flickr.com/photos/jjjones3860/sets/72157644709832792/ . Would like to hear what others familiar with this species think. I only have one other sighting of Long-billed Dowitcher at Manitou Lake in 26 years and no Short-billed. [cobirds] Band-tailed Pigeon - Roxborough SP - Douglas County
While leading a birding by ear hike today at Roxborough State Park, my group crossed paths with Front Range Birding Company's birding hike. [cobirds] Grandview Cemetery (Fort Collins, Larimer) on 5/1714
No rarities today but a nice total of 42 species and interesting behaviors. Highlights: Cassin's Vireo (1) Plumbeous Vireo (1) in the same tree as the Cassin's, with the gray one seeming mildly annoyed at the green one Black-headed Grosbeak (1) Western Tanager (1) FOY for me in northern CO Broad-tailed Hummingbirds (two different instances of 2013 nest re-use going on at present, with one of these nests going all the way back to 2010) Swainson's Thrush (at least 3) Great Horned Owl (2 babies out of the nest for the first time I've seen this year - it was reported to me that a third baby fell out of the nest and was killed. Gawkers (bubophiles?) with big cameras beginning to show up as predictably as peony blooms.) Empid sp. (suspect something other than Dusky/Least, poor looks) Downy Woodpecker preying on Golden Oak Scale in Bur Oak Mini-flock of 4 Red-tailed Hawks cavorting high in the sky (menage a quatre?) White-crowned Sparrow (1 pale-lored, getting late) European Starlings heard mimicking both Western Wood-Pewee and Solitary Sandpiper In one medium-sized Bur Oak tree were 7 Fox Squirrels, all out at the ends of the branches chowing down on the flowers of this tree. It reminded me of my chocolate chip cookie-loving boys when they were kids always trying to get at the dough, and their mother saying something to the effect, Eat all the dough and there won't be any cookies. [cobirds] Migration Destination: Colorado Front Range (?)
COBirders, I have been monitoring the winds since before the Mother's Day Weekend snowstorm on the web. It has been a great example of how to stop migration. The snowstorm trucked through Colorado with the low pressure center around the La Junta (approximated) then headed northeast. After that system swept through, the following pattern existed for the last approximately 6 days. It just kept digging farther south until the front crossed the Gulf of Mexico. http://earth.nullschool.net/#2014/05/11/1800Z/wind/isobaric/850hPa/orthographic=-105.12,40.19,1704 Currently this image is centered on Longmont, CO (where I live). To get your location to show up highlighted on the map, click the Earth button in the bottom right, then click on the [(O)] button (fifth line down from the top, sixth button on that line). That should help you orient yourself. If you need to zoom in or out, you can also do that with the scroll wheel of your mouse (if you have one). It might help for context to zoom out sometimes. Notice the winds are butted right up against the Front Range. There is a small section of air that would be able to squeeze right up the Front Range to about... wait for it... Chatfield Reservoir. Imagine that... there were many reports of fallout. I am not looking to have a discussion of fallout and its many definitions, but would like to believe from the reports that there were TONS of birds. So whatever your definition of fallout, it would have been fun to get to Chatfield during and after this storm. But what happened the next few days. There likely wasn't much large-scale bird movement. Watch the winds just slam down on Colorado from the north for a while. Noon on the 12th: http://earth.nullschool.net/#2014/05/12/1800Z/wind/isobaric/850hPa/orthographic=-105.12,40.19,1704 Noon on the 13th: http://earth.nullschool.net/#2014/05/13/1800Z/wind/isobaric/850hPa/orthographic=-105.12,40.19,1704 Noon on the 14th: http://earth.nullschool.net/#2014/05/14/1800Z/wind/isobaric/850hPa/orthographic=-105.12,40.19,1704 and it just continued, until tonight (05/17/2014): http://earth.nullschool.net/#2014/05/18/0300Z/wind/isobaric/850hPa/orthographic=-105.12,40.19,1704 That image is for 9pm tonight. Where are all the winds pointing? Directly at the migration mecca (at least this year) of Colorado's Front Range. Don't believe these crazy maps from some random guy on CoBirds? Try this on for size: http://weather.cod.edu/satrad/nexrad/index.php?type=FTG-N0Q-1-48 If you catch this image before it gets too late, there will be a nice set of thunderstorms coming down off the Cheyenne Ridge (Cheyenne, WY), then those break up and a few hours later the radar lights UP! See the big ring of green radar echoes? Those are likely bugs, bats, and birds. So get out there and start listening. The place to be right now is Colorado! Unfortunately in the morning, We won't be so lucky though. The pattern is supposed to change to a more southerly flow throughout the night and most of the migration won't get concentrated in Colorado (no fronts or boundaries to stop bird migration). Here's 6am tomorrow morning (5/18): http://earth.nullschool.net/#2014/05/18/1200Z/wind/isobaric/850hPa/orthographic=-105.12,40.19,1704 I am going to go sit outside and count night flight calls with a glass of wine in a minute. Hoping to snag a few thrushes, maybe a sandpiper or two, and hopefully plenty of unknown bird calls. Let me know if you go out and listen and how it plays out. Birds might be high up because there isn't low clouds, but still might get high concentrations since the winds haven't been great for northward migration recently. There might be some low enough to hear. Good luck to you and happy birding. [cobirds] NE Corner of Colorado birding today
Like just about everyone else, I had a great day of birding today, just in a different place from just about everyone else. Yesterday I went out to Holyoke in order to bird my way back today. Highlights on the trip east on 5/16 were American Redstart at Cottonwood SWA by the Platte near Snyder on CO 71 (Morgan County); Red-necked Phalaropes (a few in the 200 or so Wilson's) at the Haxtun (Phillips County) wastewater ponds (as an aside, I found out last night that the people of Holyoke don't like the people of Haxtun-they feel the Haxtunites are uppity. Who knew?); Veery at Frenchman Creek SWA (Phillips County) and lots of good stuff including another American Redstart, a female Blackpoll Warbler and a Common Poorwill at the Holyoke Cemetery (I think Dave Leatherman was the landscape architect for this place). Today, I returned to the cemetery to start and then birded the Holyoke town park and county seat grounds. I had ten warblers (including Magnolia, at least 4 more Blackpolls, another American Redstart and a Townsend's) plus Western Tanager and Rose-breasted Grosbeak by 8 a.m. I continued to Julesburg and dePooter Ponds where a breeding plumaged Common Loon arrived as I did. Northern Parula and Common Yellowthroat made it 12 warblers-all east of US 385. But that was it on that front. Just west of Sedgwick I found an Upland Sandpiper, one of my targets for sure. At Jumbo (Sedgwick County for these birds) I had a Peregrine Falcon buzzing an Osprey-the Osprey was actually the oddity. I don't think I've ever seen one at Jumbo before. Water was high everywhere, even at Red Lion (Logan County). As a result the shorebird results were not all that exciting for the trip (plug-I guess you will have to come to the CFO convention in August if you really want to get a shorebird fix). Red Lion had a few Red-necked Phalaropes in the couple of hundred Wilson's; if that sounds like a repeat, it is; plus my first Stilt Sandpipers of the year. Better shorebirds, it turns out, were in Tamarack (Logan County). The tracks between the hedgerows are mainly flooded creating new shorebird habitat. Unfortunately the plant like hides what is in the water for the most part, but bigger things like two Willet and Greater Yellowlegs and more Stilt Sandpipers stood tall enough to be seen.
