[cobirds] Addendum to Crow Valley CG (Weld) on 5/21
Glenn and Cathy (and maybe others) have posted to COBIRDS about the exciting day at Crow Valley CG yesterday. The marquis species like Mourning Warbler (male) and Summer Tanager (molting male, western race) were mentioned. Many other great birds were also noted and photographed like Palm Warbler, Magnolia Warbler, female Black-and-white Warbler, 2 Ash-throated Flycatchers, Veery, multiple Tennessee Warblers and American Redstarts. Some of these I saw, some I did not. Birds seen or heard yesterday that are not every day Crow Valley CG species perhaps should be mentioned also: Chimney Swift (1) [Is there a chimney in Briggsdale?] Great-tailed Grackle (1m) Lesser Goldfinch (heard only) Sora (heard only) Bobolink (I believe seen by John Vanderpoel and others, heard by me) Cordilleran Flycatcher (1 silent, very yellow-green individual) One of the most beautiful things I've ever seen occurred late in the day in the famous southwest corner on the other side of the Crow River. About 5:30pm the Summer Tanager began consistently flycatching off the end of a dead tree branch. From the campground side of the river looking southwest from the corner campsite, the backlit red and olive bird set against a wonderfully green prairie hillside made for an idyllic scene. Then it was joined by a male Western Tanager. On more than one occasion both birds sat less than a foot apart, both calmly flying out for food, and coming back. This went on for at least an hour, at which time they were joined by a second male Western Tanager. It would have made quite a video. [cobirds] Indigo Bunting/Larimer
While out on a run yesterday I had an Indigo Bunting and a Black-headed Grosbeak singing about 0.3 miles west on the Poudre Bike Trail from the Lee Martinez Park parking lot link trail and Poudre Bike trail intersection. There has been an Indigo Bunting in this area for the last 3 years but I haven't confirmed breeding. FYI there is a trail closure sign right where I heard it. A nice office bird this am was a male and female Lazuli Bunting. Rob Sparks Old Town Fort Collins -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Blue-winged Warbler and R B Grosbeaks (2) at Welchester Lakewood Jefferson Co.
I found the reported Blue-winged Warbler this morning at about 8:15 singing across the eastern boundary of Welchester Tree Grant Park in Lakewood (8th Ave) and called it in for a good look. It was a three note buzz, not the two note I am used to in the East. State bird only one mile from my home! While watching a singing Rose-breasted Grosbeak near the stream and east of the wooden bridge, spotted another male with a pale pink breast patch - a first spring bird. I've seen three RBGR this spring and only one Black-headed Grosbeak. Bob Shade Lakewood -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] BLUE-WINGED WARBLER continues at Welchester Tree Grant Park, Jefferson County, 11 AM
THANKS to Stephanie Jones for this great find. First Jeffco record I am aware of this one was documented in Golden in 1961. (ref Bob and Bob) It is loyal to the riparian at its downstream exit from the Park onto private property. It could be heard at a distance. At least 14 birders have seen it, that I know of. Directions: Take 6th avenue west from Denver and exit at Simms, going north a block, then left on 8th. Go west less than a mile and the park is well signed on the right. Enter the park and take trails leading east, then down hill to the east fence and gulch. Joe -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch, Pueblo/El Paso 5/23 (YT Warbler)
Bill (Mr. Chico) Maynard and I were are Chico Basin Ranch this morning. On the Pueblo side, at the Headquarter Willows, there was a YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER. A female Blackpoll Warbler was at Rose Pond. One Northern Waterthrush was singing at the Headquarters and another one at Rose Pond. The Least Bittern also continues in the marsh, in the eastern part of Rose Pond. Shorebirds today at Rose Pond (a Long-billed Curlew) and (Lesser Yellowlegs and Wilson's Phalarope) at the Headquarter's Pond. On the El Paso County side, a female Townsend's Warbler was the best thing, we could find. Nick Moore said, a male Tennessee Warbler was singing earlier in the morning, at the banding station area. I believe, an Alder Flycatcher was banded today, perhaps the one from yesterday. A Red-headed Woodpecker continues north of the Casita, in El Paso County. [cobirds] Crow Valley Camp Ground, Weld County
CoBirders, My visit at Crow Valley today did not produce anything note worthy compared to earlier visits this week and last. While I still saw about the same number of species, around 50, I did not have any new warblers. In fact I saw only Yellow, one Yellow-rumped and one Wilson's Warbler. I did see what appeared to be a hybrid male Baltimore/Bullock's Oriole. Another birder photographed a male Baltimore Oriole and others saw a Summer Tanager. My best birds for the area were probably the 11 White-faced Ibis, 1 Great-tailed Grackle, 1 Cinnamon Teal and 1 Blue-winged Teal. Everything else seemed ordinary for Crow Valley. Crow Creek, after appearing to be subsiding this past Tuesday, was rising today. The campsite were pretty much vacant this morning, but were filling up when I left the campground around 2 p.m. Bird on! [cobirds] Crow Valley
Hi Didn't detect any fancy warblers, nothing that unusually rare, although a M Great-tailed Grackle in the new lagoon in the north pasture was of special interest. What was of interest was the diversity of species, 46 species in just over two hours, always birds to look at, all in all, a very enjoyable morning in Crow Valley. [cobirds] RFI Timely Reporting for Non-Techies
All, I am looking for suggestions about timely reporting, especially of rare species. We do not have a smart phone and do not have texting on our modest cellphone. I recently have seen a couple of pretty good birds, but could not report them for several hours due to our location and other things we had to do before we got home to our computer. I tried one time reporting to a number I had for the RBA, but it never showed up to my knowledge. You can reply to me offline unless you feel the whole cobirds list could benefit from your answer. [cobirds] Possible Laughing Gull, Custer Co.
Yesterday and today I watched and photographed a black headed gull at DeWeese Reservoir which I am about 90% certain was a breeding plumage Laughing Gull. I was 100% certain until I read K. Kaufman's caution that some first summer Franklin's Gulls can resemble an adult Laughing Gull. The wing pattern of my gull was typical for a Laughing Gull. The upper wing had a gray mantle with white trailing edge and all black tips on the primaries. The under wing was white with black on the primaries. The head was solid black; no indication of being a partial hood. The bill and head shape look close to the Laughing Gulls pictured in various field guides. I have good photos both profile and flying if someone would like to look at them and offer an opinion. The photos aren't posted anywhere; I would have to e-mail them. A pleasant surprise on the return home was the many dozens Lark Buntings in the fields north of Wetmore. I haven't seen them here in these numbers for several years. [cobirds] Yuma and Phillips County Today
Greetings All Today felt like Seattle at times. Drizzly and without migrants. But there were some prime moments. At dawn, below the dam at Stalker Lake, Yuma, there was a PROTHONOTARY WARBLER and a PHILADELPHIA VIREO plus Black-and-white Warbler and American Redstart. At the Wray Fish Hatchery, there was a RUSSET-BACKED (Swainson's) THRUSH and an Indigo Bunting plus 2 Great Crested Flycatchers (not rare for Yuma, but rare for Wray) In the town of Laird, 7 miles e. of Wray and exceedingly close to Nebraska, there was another RUSSET-BACKED THRUSH and a Veery The shelterbelts took much work and yielded only a Northern Waterthrush At Lions Fish Hatchery, I was almost eaten by an extremely poorly managed, large, snarling, foaming-at-mouth dog totally uncontrolled by its inept owner that took a couple goodly lunges at me. Remember that this is a time to get up on a picnic bench. You are harder to get at and you look much larger. What a strange event. 5 Black Terns, however, made up for the black dog and an Eastern Willow Flycatcher (photos to come) were highlights there. The neighborhood around the end of Akron (go e. on Akron from the US HWY just before it goes n. out of Holyoke) was birdy, with highlights including BROAD-WINGED HAWK, American Redstart, and a migrant Bell's Vireo. The town of Haxtun had another BW HAWK and American Redstart Good Birding Steve Mlodinow -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group.
