[cobirds] El Paso County: Long-billed Curlews
Had a pretty good day (4-14-2020) viewing Long-billed Curlews in El Paso County. Saw just one at Big Johnson Reservoir early this morning. Found five out on Henderson Road about 4:45 pm, then at approx 5:15 pm, we found 22 on Hemingway Road, in the same area that the Sagebrush Sparrow was found a week ago. Seeing 22 of them foraging across the prairie was pretty awesome. [cobirds] El Paso County: Pectoral Sandpiper
Went out to Squirrel Creek Road Pond, El Paso County, to see if anything interesting is coming in. The mud flats are really nice this time of year. Glad I stopped. Pectoral Sandpiper working the mud closest to the road. Awesome! Shout out to David Tonnessen for identification of this bird, from a pretty horrible picture. [cobirds] El Paso County: Dickcissel
After a delicious lunch at Chick-fil-A, my wife, daughter, and I decided to check out Shumway Road in Fountain. Wanted to get a glimpse of a Bobolink. Struck out on the Bobolink, but got good views of a Dickcissel. May have heard a second, but couldn't confirm it. [cobirds] Lincoln County: Snowy Owl
Yesterday afternoon, 28 Dec, I got a call at work. It was a co-worker, who is also a birder, that was driving back to Colorado Springs, from her vacation in Wisconsin. While her and her family were on I-70, between Genoa and Limon, they had spotted a female Snowy Owl sitting on a telephone pole. Since they were eager to get home, they didn't stop and photograph the owl, nor did they get an exact location. She did say it was very close to Limon (east of Limon). I realize this notification may not be much help, but I thought I would post it anyways. This way anyone heading out that way over the weekend might be able to relocate the owl. [cobirds] El Paso County - Broad-tailed Hummingbird
This evening, at about 5:30 pm, while I was waiting for my wife to get off work, I heard the unmistakable sound of a Broad-tailed Hummingbird as it flew over my location. I was parked just west of the intersection of Barnes and Austin Bluffs. Get ready, the hummingbirds are coming! Yes! I love spring time. [cobirds] El Paso County: Red-bellied Woodpecker

[cobirds] El Paso County - Surf Scoters at Big Johnson Reservoir
Stopped by the reservoir around 5pm. Noticed three distinct, dark birds near the dam. Just as I got the scope set up, they started to head out of sight around the dam. Distinct white patches on the face, one by the bill, one behind the eyes. Mark confirmed this identification about 15 minutes later. [cobirds] El Paso County - Roadrunner
This afternoon, we decided to stop at Aiken Canyon Preserve for a hike. Beautiful day. After the hike we headed south on hwy 115 to Barrett Road. Wanted to see all the bluebirds. When we pulled off of hwy 115, we immediately stopped on a dirt shoulder so we could get our snacks. While we were eating, my wife looks out the window, to the west of the road. "What's that?" she asked. I put the bino's on it. No way! A roadrunner in El Paso County Colorado, in February? Priceless. https://flic.kr/p/DZELb3 Aaron and Pati Driscoll Colorado Spring -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] El Paso County: Fox Sparrow
This past Saturday, 10 Oct, I submitted a yard report to ebird of a Red Fox Sparrow. I figured he wouldn't stick around long. Was I wrong! Today is Tuesday the 13th and this beautiful bird is still in the yard. Awesome. Last evening, while I was cooking brats on the BBQ, he (just for this story I'll say it's a he) watched me for 30 minutes. He even allowed me to get within 15 feet. He sure likes to do the "towhee dance" in the mulch. Hope he sticks around a long time. [cobirds] El Paso County: Bobolinks
The wife and I found two Bobolinks on Shumway Road, east of Fountain, CO. They are on the east side of the dirt road, in the hay/alfalfa field. [cobirds] El Paso County: Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, Clear Springs Ranch
Came home from an enjoyable birding trip at Chico. Tired, and just wanted to stay home. Our daughter, Sarah, wanted to go running, and she likes to go to Clear Springs Ranch to do this. I didn't want to go, I was tired. Changed my mind and went down with the family to visit Clear Springs Ranch. Along one of the fences that leads to the parking area, we spotted a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher. [cobirds] El Paso County: Big Johnson Reservoir - Tundra Swans
Friday afternoon, arrived at BJR around 3:15 pm. Bill M., John D., and Leonard L. already on site. They pointed out the two beautiful Tundra Swans and the White-winged Scoters. They also found a Long-tailed Duck. Also of interest to me were the three Red-breasted Mergansers. Lifer for me. Thanks Bill and John for pointed them out. The two swans lifted off around 3:30 pm. Headed SW towards Fort Carson. Didn't see them again. After I left at 4:00 pm (I was frozen by this time), three Tundra Swans came back (see ebird). [cobirds] El Paso County: Drennan road
Once again, went out to Drennan Road to see if I could get any of the reported birds that I haven't seen (Savannah Sparrow and McCown's Longspur). Didn't see them tonight. Buthad a lifer! Just wish I could have got it on my memory card. I had started my trip at Squirrel Creek Road pond. Went east on Squirrel Creek to Milne. Turned north on Milne. Turned west on Drennan. About a half mile after I made my turn to head west from Milne, I spotted a small bird on the fence wire. He was acting strange. Hopping down the wire; dipping into the grass; hop back up to the wire; moving pretty fast. Time of the sighting, around 7:15pm, so its already getting pretty dark. Put my bino's on it - Yes I am 99% sure it was a Black-throated Green Warbler. The green/olive marking were clearly visible; the white wing bars visible. So I'm on my camera just clicking away. Said to myself, better check to make sure I'm in focus (my excitement had shut off my brain and I had failed to get my basic readings set). Hit my view pictures button - nothing. Got this notice - "No memory card". Almost threw the camera out the window. Raced home to look at the bird books. Yep, exactly what I saw. I now have a dilemna - do I count it as a lifer or not? I always try to get them on film to be 100% sure. I've doubted myself for the last hour. I'm not gonna count it. Bad lighting could have played tricks on me. Maybe I'll find it tomorrow. Doubt it, but I'm gonna look again. Aaron Driscoll Colorado Springs -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Park County: Antero Reservoir
Not sure how you all feel about a generic birding observation, but I felt this needed to get out. Last Friday (5 Sept), on our way out to Meeker, Colorado, we drove by Antero Reservoir in Park County. It was pretty obvious that the summer rains have hit this area pretty good. As we drove past the north entrance to Antero Reservoir, I noticed a pretty good area of mud flats extending from Hwy 24 west to the dam. I have never seen it like this. The awesome part of this sight was the hundreds, probably thousands, of shorebirds all around each of the mud flat/small lakes that were in my field of view. Arrgg! I couldn't stop! Had the family with me and we hadn't scheduled a stop over at Antero. Who knows what we missed. Anyways, just decided to post this so that other birders may get the chance to make the trip up to Antero. And we have a storm hitting the state this week. Bet it would be an awesome trip. Saw one Greater White Fronted Goose on the softball field near the skateboard park. Quick jump over to the Doubletree Pond off Circle and I-25. Nope, I was wrong about the entire Canadian and Cackling goose population being at Prospect: the other half was at Doubletree. Never seen so many birds on the ice at Doubletree. Saw four Ross's Geese, one beautiful Wood duck, Common Goldeneyes (no Barrows), Hooded Mergensers, Least Scaup, and various other common birds for this time of year. [cobirds] El Paso County: Big Johnson Reservoir Surf Scoters
On Thursday afternoon, around 3:30 pm, Jon Rouse and I arrived at Big Johnson Reservoir. The primary purpose was to view the Surf Scoters, which would be a life bird for me. Thanks to Mark Peterson for finding and posting this bird. Since I sit at a desk all day, it is greatly appreciated when anyone posts findings for El Paso County. It gives me an excuse to leave work early. J When we arrived, we met Mel and Jeanne Goff. Had an enjoyable hour with them as we viewed the thousands of birds on BJR. We viewed the reservoir from the iron gate on the SW corner of the reservoir. Jon spotted one of the Surf Scoters about an hour into our viewing. We then walked the Blue Stem Open Space trail from the parking area to a fence post on the southern side of the reservoir. From the south side, the view was incredibly! The ability to see the thousands of birds was amazing. Jon then re-found the three female Surf Scoters. I was then able to view this new life bird. Yes! The following list is provided by the Mel and Jeanne. 16 Canada Geese 4 Gadwalls 65 American Widgeon 6 Mallards 12 Northern Shovelers 5 Northern Pintails 6 Green-winged Teals 1 Canvasback 75 Readhead 2 Ring-necked Ducks 1 Greater Scaup 15 Lesser Scaup 3 Surf Scoters 8 Bufflehead 10 Hooded Mergansers 2 Common Mergansers 100 Ruddy Ducks 1 Pacific Loon 6 Pied-billed Grebe 10 Eared Grebe 60 Western Grebe 1 Northern Harrier 1 Bald Eagle 1 Red-tailed Hawk 400 American Coot 7 Sandhill Cranes 13 Killdeer 20 Ring-billed Gulls 4 California Gulls 12 Black-billed Magpie 50 European Starlings 6 Western Meadowlark 4 Franklin’s Gulls 1 Belted Kingfisher 1 American Tree Sparrow 1 Northern Shrike Aaron Driscoll Colorado Springs -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. My wife and I spent the afternoon out in Calhan, Colorado. For three hours we got to witness an absolutelly amazing sight. Wave after wave after wave of Sandhill Cranes were flying over. Awesome! On our way home, we went through Ellicott, CO. A nice little pond just west of town had a good variety of ducks. Just past the first bridge west of Ellicott, I spotted a Wilson's Snipe. Got some really good looks at this one. Awesome day! http://www.flickr.com/photos/93843744@N06/ Aaron Driscoll Colorado Springs -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] El Paso County: Dusky Grouse
My wife and I decided to hike the Catamount Reservoir Trail this morning. We parked at Green Mountain Falls and walked up some really steep hills to get to the trail. I was looking forward to seeing alot of bird activity, but was greatly disappointed. We arrived at South Catamount Reservoir after a 1.5 hour hike, with very few birds seen. On the way back it was a different story. We spotted an Osprey eating something (too far away to confirm, probably a fish). 2 Williamson's Sapsuckers Clark's Nutcracker Dark Eyed Junco 4 Turkey Vultures Mountain Chickadee Unidentified Sparrow Robins When we were about 1 mile back down the trail, on our way back to Green Mountain Falls, we ran into a group of four hikers. They probably saw my binoculars and camera strapped on my back and assumed we were birding. Yes, we were! One of the ladies in the group says to me: "We just saw two ptarmigan on the trail just a few hundred yards that way." (pointing east) I thought to myself, this is going to be a good day, a new life bird. But then I reallized that it was probably an incorrect identification. I was right, they were Dusky Grouse. But that's ok. Got some really good looks up close. A beautiful hike. http://www.flickr.com/photos/93843744@N06/ Aaron and Pati Driscoll Colorado Springs, CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] El Paso County: Hummingbirds
This has been a great year in our yard. The biggest joy has been the rain, which brought the hummingbirds to our 7' tall Hollyhocks. For the first time in the 10 years we have lived in this house, we had three different hummingbirds in our yard in one day: Black Chinned, Calliope, and Rufous. The rufous male was spectacular! The photographs show all the different colors, with the yellow/orange being my favorite. Sure hope they all stick around for another few months. http://www.flickr.com/photos/93843744@N06/ Aaron Driscoll Colorado Springs -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Park County - 23 June
Jon Rouse and I attempted to find the Pomarine Jaeger at Antero Reservoir on Sunday. No luck! Was amazed by the amount of birds on/at the reservoir! Saw these: Common Raven Am. [cobirds] El Paso County: Virginia Rail
Was out visiting Squirrel Creek Road Pond, Big Johnson Reservoir, and other places this evening. Decided to visit the small pond located at the intersection of C&S Road and Silver Glen Drive, just south of Cross Creek Park. In the SW corner of the pond is a concrete tunnel that runs under the dirt road. The tunnel runs East/West. When I stopped to look at the cattails on the east side of the tunnel, I notice a Virginia Rail in the water. Wasn't spooked at all. Great look at this bird! Squirrel Creek Road pond had no birds! Really dark due to cloud cover when I got to Big Johnson Res. Lots of birds on the island that is forming near the eastern shore. http://www.flickr.com/photos/93843744@N06/ Aaron Driscoll Colorado Springs -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Kiowa County: Adobe Creek Reservoir - Piping Plover
On Friday, my wife and I made a trip to Bent's Old Fort near La Junta. We decided at the last minute to try for the Plovers at Adobe Creek Reservoir. We got the Piping Plover, but no other birds. Only looked the eastside of the reservoir. Did see a beautiful Red-headed Woodpecker as we drove east on highway 194. Long trip for one new life bird, the plover. http://www.flickr.com/photos/93843744@N06/?details=1 Aaron and Pati Driscoll Colorado Springs -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] El Paso County: Bald Eagles at Big Johnson Reservoir
Jon Rouse and I were at BJR, attempting to find the Pacific Loon. No luck on that one. We did witness an amazing sight, at least it was to me. Two Bald Eagles were almost over the parking area/metal gate area of the reservoir. They put on a show that was breath-taking. Diving on the water, playing in the air, getting chased by a hawk, ganging up on the hawk and chasing it away. Amazing! Absolutely amazing! Tried to get good photos, but they wouldn't hold still! :) just kidding. http://www.flickr.com/photos/93843744@N06/ Aaron Driscoll Colorado Springs -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] El Paso County: Big Johnson Reservoir
Stopped at BJR this afternoon. Met Bill Maynard. Good looks at Common Tern, Black Tern, Western Grebe, Bald Eagles, Wilson's Phalarope, Green-winged Teal, Blue-winged Teal, others. Saw a large flock of Ibis land on the eastern shoreline, but couldn't make out which type. Bill said he saw a Clark's Grebe before I showed up. After I left BJR, went down to Watson Junior High in Security. Awesome look at two Mississippi Kites, one of them on a nest. http://www.flickr.com/photos/93843744@N06/ Aaron Driscoll Colorado Springs -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] El Paso County: Memorial Park
On Wednesday and Thursday, we attempted to find the Palm Warbler that Bill Maynard had reported near the Memorial Park Recreation building. No luck on either night. [cobirds] El Paso County: Blackburnian Warbler
Thanks to everyone who posted about this awesome bird! Found it around 5pm in the sw corner of the parking lot. Sorry the pictures are not better. The bird was up about 40 feet, and the sun angle was horrible. But we got it. Also viewing this bird with me were Suke and Cici Lee, Bill Evans (sorry Bill, didn't get the name of the lady with you!), and another gentleman who just moved here from California (can't remember his name either.) Also saw a Wilson's Warbler, Western Tanager, a bunch of Bushtits, Blue Jays, Spotted Towhees, and a Black-capped Chickadee. http://www.flickr.com/photos/93843744@N06/ Aaron Driscoll Colorado Springs -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. While we were eating dinner, my wife looked out the back door and asked: "What kind of bird is that?" A Brown Thrasher was visiting. A new yard bird for us. [cobirds] El Paso County: Squirrel Creek Road Pond - Marbled Godwit?
My wife and I went out to Hanover Road to see the Long-billed Curlews that Mr. Chartier had posted yesterday. No luck. The rancher was working in the flooded field and had probably scared them off. So, we stopped at Squirrel Creek Road Pond on the way home. Water level is extremely low. 20+ American Avocet 30+ Northern Shovelers 2 Solitary Sandpipers, I think. Lighting was bad and my photos didn't turn out. 1 Marbled Godwit, I think. While I was standing on the northern shore, 12 American White Pelicans landed right in front of me! An awesome sight! Also on the lake: 2 Great Blue Heron 25+ Western Grebes 15+ Franklin's Gulls 25+ Ring-billed Gulls Probably other types of gulls but I couldn't identify them all Dozens of Eared Grebes, Coots, Mallards, Shovelers, Canadian Geese, American Widgeons, Buffleheads. Early this morning, while I was eating breakfast and looking out the back door at the feeders, an event happened that has never happened before: a Scaled Quail walked through the yard! Good start to the day. So, decided to glance at cobirds. Glad I did. Saw Debbie Barnes' post on the Barrows Goldeneye. Since I have not seen this bird, decided to try for it. Got it! Thanks Debbie!
