[cobirds] Black-throated Gray Warbler - Gregory Canyon - Boulder County

2011-05-10 Thread David Alcock
Hi all,
On an early afternoon I headed up for a couple of hours at Gregory Canyon.
I started looking along the entrance road when another birder
(Pete) indicated he was hoping to refind a Black-throated Gray Warbler this
morning. I am not sure if he did refind the bird, but I did see, and
photograph it around six pm. It was just south of the entrance road, in
the most open area between the turnoff and the roundabout at the trail
head.

[cobirds] Jefferson County - Red Rocks and Lair of the Bear - 4/30/11

2011-04-30 Thread David Alcock
Hi Folks,
Just got out of the chilly breeze this morning.

A stop at RRTP yielded a good list of species, including the Curve-billed
Thrasher (twice) and White-throated Sparrow. A couple birding said they
had had the Harris's Sparrow as well, but I failed to relocate it after my
stop inside for much needed coffee. Very cool that these birds just
continue on and on
Later I headed up the canyon to Lair of the Bear Park, and walked up on a
Broad-winged Hawk perched just off the trail. It flushed and repositioned
twice more along my path, before a Red-tail decided it had had enough and
chased the Broad-winged off to the east.

Pics from the morning will be posted to my blog at some point in the not too
distant future.

Good birding!

After a quiet lunch at Standley Lake I was treated to a last minute sight of
2 dozen White-faced Ibis elevating above the lake. Nice flight silhouette

[cobirds] Another aberrant duck (03/06) - Clear Creek past I70 - Jefferson County

2011-03-07 Thread David Alcock
Coincidentally to, or perhaps as a result of, all the thought provoking
discussion of ducks, hybrid ducks, and their plumages last week I happened
to notice a Mallard that wasn't quite right on Saturday morning. The bird
was swimming with a few other Mallards just south of the trail, right where
the Rusty Blackbirds hung out last year. (No Rustys BTW).

The head, neck ring (strong but incomplete), and breast all seemed good for
an adult male Mallard. The back and underside were mostly covered in brown
feathers edged in creamy-buff - with the back appearing more uniform than
the undersides. Scapulars seemed all Mallard to me, thanks to everyone that
have chimed in on the detailed email string for the Mallard - Black Duck
discussion.

My guess is this was some kind of an incomplete or delayed molt. That
seems the most likely scenario, but finding it smack-dab in the middle of
alternate plumage would seem the least likely time to have an early or late
molter, unless it was an incomplete molt that had been abandoned. If anyone
has a chance to take a look at the pictures I got of this bird and would
like to reply directly to confirm or contradict that idea I would welcome
the response.

[cobirds] Standley Lake - Jefferson County

2011-03-03 Thread David Alcock
On my drive west on 88th to check the effect of the wind on the ice at
Standley Lake today I wasn't surprised, but was still pleased to see a Bald
Eagle flying motionless in the gale, right overhead.

I was surprised, and even more pleased to see a Double-crested Cormorant
fighting the wind in the same spot on my way back. FOS for me. The
rookery has been quiet since I started checking the past few weeks, but it
looks like that may be changing. The bird was aimed straight for it, and
not making good time at all.

As for the ice which had been covering most of the surface on Tuesday, it
has all been pushed to a narrow sliver on the eastern shore...which wasn't a
surprise at all.

The only other surprise was a Mountain Chickadee at Barr Lake SP.

[cobirds] Black Scoter - Baseline Res - Boulder County

2010-12-23 Thread David Alcock
I was finally able to bring myself, my scope, and the female/imm. Black
Scoter into alignment this morning at Baseline Res. The bird was in the NE
area of the reservoir, up towards the remaining ice, but best visible from
the SW corner along Cherryvale Rd when I was scanning at about 10:30. The
water has really opened back up over the past couple of days and is now
roughly 80% ice free.

[cobirds] Iceland Gull - Cherry Creek Reservoir - present again today

2010-12-12 Thread David Alcock
The Iceland Gull was present again this morning in the general area of the
marina. Myself and five others had good looks at the bird, as it
alternated between the re-emerging sandspit and open water straight out from
the end of the west fisherman's pier.

We were also able to relocate one of the Lesser Black-backed Gulls, and had
the Say's Phoebe visit us just north of the marina boat storage area.
Many thanks to all who have been providing updates,

[cobirds] Pacific Loon, Baseline Reservoir, Boulder County

2010-11-19 Thread David Alcock
I observed three loons this morning from the SE point overlooking Baseline
Res. (Accessed from the dogpark open space on Baseline Rd). Two were
clearly Common Loons, but the third was smaller and from a distance had a
lighter head.As they approached my position, finally coming well within
50 yds, the parallel vertical dark gray stripes on the sides of its neck
became obvious, setting off its light gray back of neck and head. Very
cool to have the three approach that close - kicking myself that while scope
and camera were on hand and set up, the memory card was back in the truck.

Re: [cobirds] Light morph Ferruginous Hawk rather than Gyrfalcon?

2010-11-03 Thread David Alcock
Hi Paula,
Yesterday afternoon around 5:30 I had a large, very light Ferruginous on the
ground just west of S. 100th St., across from Mary's Lake outside
Broomfield. I took some horribly backlit pictures, and will post at least
one on my daveabirding http://daveabirding.blogspot.com/ blog - not much
to look at but they do show the feathered legs, and white head with the dark
line. Whether or not it was the same individual they are sharp looking
birds.

 CObirders,

I came home to check the possible Gyrfalcon in my hawk books.
Unfortunately, I did not see the bird fly to be able to see the shape of the
wings. After looking at many pictures, I decided that it could be a very
light morph Ferruginous Hawk. My impression at first, however, was of a
bird with an almost white head and a faint dark line above the eye. The
body was hefty (bulky), suggesting a Ferruginous, rather than a large
falcon. The breast was white with only the faintest of markings on the
belly (suggestive of a white-morph Ferruginous). I did not see if the legs
were feathered, because I was told to move my car (it was blocking a school
driveway) before I could see them.

I hope someone else sees it, for it is a beautiful bird!

Re: [cobirds] Sandhill crane Boulder county

2010-10-25 Thread David Alcock
Hi,
After seeing the report that the Sandhill was still present early this
morning I decided to head over myself to see if I could relocate it. True
to the directions the juv. Sandhill Crane was feeding in the wheat field.
I was afraid it was going to leave just as I spotted it, because just as I
pulled to a stop a N. Harrier headed low across the field directly towards
the Crane. To my relief the two birds largley ignored one another. A few
minutes and some poor photos later another bird spooked the Crane. I kept
the crane in frame as it flew, and then tried to ID the culprit who chased
it off. From my impression and close looks at really bad pics it appears
to have been a 3rd year Bald Eagle. I watched the two fly east and drop
down behind the first group of trees to the east. After a few minutes I
did see two large birds rise from that area, the presumable Sandhill heading
SSE, possibly turning back towards the S as I lost it.

Does anyone have experience with the frequency of Bald Eagles taking
Sandhill Cranes in migration? Would other area species attempt to snack on
prey that size?
Has anyone else seen similar interactions with this bird?

Thanks and good birding!

[cobirds] Winter Wren? Singletree Trail - Superior, Boulder County

2010-09-07 Thread David Alcock
I am posing this as a question rather than a sighting with any great degree
of certainty, if anyone could advise me on whether a Winter Wren has any
degree of likelihood in Colorado in the first week of September, I would
appreciate it.

This afternoon at apx. 2:30 pm I was walking along the Singletree trail just
SW of old Superior. From the trailhead heading west there is a good
stretch of heavy brush on the right (north) side, then an old tailing hill,
and immediately to the west a group of large cottonwoods. I was directly
under those trees shooting photos of some Towhees and Doves out in the
distance when I heard a rustling in the low groundcover at my feet. My
impression was 100% mouse - it was making small moves out of sight, in thick
vegetation 4-6 inches high, but its progress could be perceived as it moved
around.I was completely surprised when a tiny Wren popped out almost at
my feet. I didn't even attempt a photo, my lens was extended and focused
way beyond something that close, and motion would have sent it back to cover
even faster.I had 2-3 long seconds as it turned at my feet. My
impression was an overall chocolate brown bird, with very limited
markings. It gave a couple of short, exposed hopping moves at my feet,
flew a short distance to the fallen trunk, and then dove to the larger
shrubs beyond. It did not reemerge, and I did not pick up any notes or
calls, (but firebombers are flying directly over the site repeatedly this
afternoon). There is a dried creekbed to the north, but I am not aware of
any open water near the site.

I am going to try to relocate this afternoon, but was wondering if this was
just completely out of line for this time of year. Any insight would be
appreciated.

[cobirds] Peregrine Falcon just east of 93 on 128 - Boulder County

2010-03-03 Thread David Alcock
Not sure if it is a regular sight along that route or not, but it was
perched on one of the large power pylon towers just north of 128, near the
Greenbelt Plateau trailhead. Bird was spotted as I drove into work around

Kind of nice to see one at relative eye level rather than on the side of a
rocky cliff in the distance.
