For a change of pace, read the news about a Mute Swan that is attacking and destroying model boats in England, where model boat clubs take their expensive hobby as seriously as model train clubs take theirs in this country. [cobirds] Question about gull
Opinions are being requested about a gull I saw in January in the San Luis Valley. This gull showed up in a farmyard, about 4 miles south of the Monte Vista Wildlife Refuge. I watched it closely for several minutes with and without bino until I finally left, as it strolled around, pecking at whatever it might. Ground had patches of snow and clear, dry areas. All physical features – size, bill, eye, feet, tail - were like a Bonaparte’s Gull EXCEPT that it had no dark patch on cheek. No one else observed this bird, not even the resident birders on the farm who were away. It had never been reported in winter in the San Luis Valley in the past, not even by the 2 Bobs or Rawinski. Any good suggestions??? Virginia Simmons, Del Norte -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Rosy-Finches and gull???
Hundreds of Brown-crested and Black Rosy-Finches are visiting a farm south of Monte Vista NWR in Rio Grande County. I also spotted Gray-crowned in the crowd. Of interest on Jan. 24 ground at the same farm was a gull, tentatively being identified as a Bonaparte’s Gull, which would be highly unusual in this season. There may be more info coming later from better authorities about this gull. Also saw Northern Goshawk over farmland south of the refuge and a Sharpie on wire. The first cranes of the season should be showing up in the San Luis Valley in about a week if true to usual schedule. Colorado Rare Bird Alert, 3 December 2015 - 1 Update Grant application to remove most of the Russian Olive trees in the Black Hole at Two Buttes in Baca County "SeEttaM ." : Dec 03 10:59PM -0700 I am asking for feedback about a grant application to remove most of the Russian Olive trees and all of the more sparse Tamarisk in the wildlife area east of the Two Buttes Dam in Baca County including the Black Hole area that is much coveted by birders. I am in a position as a member of the executive committee of the Arkansas Basin Roundtable (we do water planning for the Arkansas Basin) to give feedback about this grant proposal and any potential deleterious impacts it may have on birds and other native species. I expect that the timing of the vegetation removal is critical so please provide what time period you believe should be off-limits and why and especially any documentation to back up the need to not allow vegetation disturbance. I am copying the grant proposal below. I need the feedback by Sunday night so I have time to prepare for a meeting in which this will be discussed next Wednesday. Thanks in advance. SeEtta Moss Canon City http://BirdsAndNature.blogspot.com <<"Estimated Completion Date: June 30, 2018 Brief description of project: The Two Buttes Dam and Wildlife Area is listed on the State Register of Historic Places. It is Colorado Parks & Wildlife property, with the Two Buttes Wildlife Area extending between cliffs below the dam. Russian olive has taken over the understory of the wildlife area below the dam. For this project and timeline, the goal of this project is to suppress the infestation of Russian olive to 10% - 20% of the understory from the current estimate of 30% to 40% of the existing understory with some dense pockets. Some tamarisk is present, which we will eradicate. A bare-dirt area above the Black Hole is eroding into the Black Hole. Colorado Parks & Wildlife is currently using this area as part of a canal restoration project. They intend to grade this area when they are done. Native shrubs, and grasses will need to be planted near the top of the cliffs to prevent further erosion into the Black Hole. Management Goals This project seeks to improve water quality and quantity, improve wildlife habitat, and enhance recreational opportunity in the Two Buttes Reservoir and Wildlife Area through: (1) The eradication of tamarisk and suppression Russian olive from the 30 acres of wildlife area east of the Two Buttes Dam; (2) The introduction of different native species to the riparian ecosystem; (3) The suppression of erosion into the Black Hole; (4) The eradication of other List B and List C noxious weed species west of Two Buttes Dam. Management Objectives Suppress Russian olive understory from the current estimated 30% - 40% to 10% - 20% of understory area by June 2018. Eradicate tamarisk from wildlife area downstream from the dam to private land by June 2017. Reintroduce native willow cover in and around the Black Hole to help prevent tamarisk reestablishment by June 2018. Plant grass, and native shrubs above the west cliffs to suppress erosion into the Black Hole. These erosion controls are to be completed by June 2018. Eradicate common mullein and other List B and List C weeds as agreed upon by CPW around Two Buttes Reservoir. Integrated Pest Management Biological Planting grass and native shrubs above the west cliffs will help prevent invasive weed seeds from washing down into the Black Hole. Planting willows where tamarisk currently resides will prevent the high-light environment which allowed tamarisk to establish itself. Mechanical A tractor with “jaws” will pull out small- to medium-sized Russian olive trees and mature tamari

[cobirds] Evening Grosbeaks, Saguache County
Today, 9/21, in the lower elevation of Carnero Canyon, west of Devils Gate, a flock of approx. 15-20 Evening Grosbeaks was in a weedy meadow, then flew up into evergreen trees where they remained, flitting through the trees. At the entrance to Carnero Canyon, there were 2 Pinyon Jays and another single over in Penitente Canyon in pinyon-juniper habitat, but I suspect there probably were more in the contiguous area. Otherwise, very quiet, with a handful of Mtn. Bluebirds. Virginia Simmons, Del Norte -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Rio Grande County
A very quick drive this morning from Del Norte to Home Lake at Monte Vista and through the MVNWR yielded about 50-60 easy species. Most were common, but there were a couple of goodies, which I will name. Between Del Norte and Monte Vista: A jumbo-sized first-year Golden Eagle. Home Lake: 6 Am. White Pelicans at Home Lake, after a large flock there last week. 6 Clark's Grebes, which have been less common than Westerns here recently. About 6 Yellow-rumped Warblers, which seem slow to show up. Monte Vista Refuge: A Wilsons' Snipe, after seeing one just a week ago at Alamosa. Heard but did not see American Bittern. Marsh Wrens are in. Eared Grebes, ditto. Still a large number of Green-winged Teal lingering at Refuge. A Lesser Yellowlegs. Lots of Sage Thrashers. Etc., etc. Virginia Simmons, Del Norte -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Wilsons' Sniipe, Alamosa County
Today on North River Road between Colorado 17 and State Street, at north end of Alamosa Ranch, a Wilson's Snipe performed its erratic flight - the first time I have seen one flying above ground. (You call that flying!!??) It was approx 10-12 feet above ground, zigging, zagging, jerking up and down. Then it flew across the road, south to north, in front of my car and disappeared in the field. Quite a treat. Since I was driving, I didn't hear any sound from it or see it again after it landed. Numerous beautiful Swainson's Hawks can be seen here now. [cobirds] Osprey and pelicans in SLV
Early afternoon today at Home Lake (Monte Vista) an Osprey, in tall tree N of lake, was eviscerating what appeared to have once been an Am. Coot. Later in afternoon, the Osprey was gone but there was a Greater Yellowlegs. At Alamosa at the "Ranch" pond across from golf course, there were 6 Am. White Pelicans. [cobirds] Greater Yellowlegs,, Monte Vista
A pair of Greater Yellowlegs was at Home Lake today (3/25). Also a couple of Common Mergansers, Lesser Scaups, Buffleheads, Ruddy Ducks, and Cinnamon Teals, with larger numbers of Redheads, many American Wigeons, some Canada Geese, and of course lots of Mallards and Coot, the usuals. Am seeing Eurasian Collared-Doves, American Kestrels, etc., here and there. So, spring is springing. [cobirds] SLV cranes coming in
Yesterday there were about 500 cranes in southwest portion of MV Refuge (near corner of Colorado 15 and RG County Rd. 8S), some being far back to the west, others closer to parking. Other species as expected along CO 15. One Northern Harrier on County Rd. 8S, already yet. Farther east in Alamosa County there was one Prairie Falcon. Today, January 19 around 1 PM, a Northern Goshawk (1st year plumage) flew across US 160 just east of Del Norte, flying low, north to south. [cobirds] San Luis Valley & correction
Extremely windy for past few days, but have these San Luis Valley sightings to report. Saturday , 5/22 - Prairie Falcon near Sanford; Gray-blue Gnatcatcher and Chestnut-sided at Aspen Glade Campground in Conejos Canyon along with a few common species; Pine Grosbeak on Cumbres Pass Monday, 5/24 - Pair of Cassin's Finches at my feeder in Del Norte Correction - MY MISTAKE - the Black-bellied Plover reported at San Luis Lake on Friday was in breeding plumage, NOT nesting. ADDENDUM - the Red-necked Phalarope reported on South River Road on Saturday AM soon blew away with all the other hundreds of Wilson's Phalaropes down there. Where do they go? [cobirds] Monte Vista NWR
Here is a mid-afternoon report for today (3/11) at MVNWR, a quiet time of day for viewing. A concentration of cranes was west of Colorado 15, back behind the work buildings. Auto tour route has more open water now with many of the birds hunkering a ways off from road, so a strong scope will help you. Plenty of Canada Geese and 1 Snow Goose with them. Quite a few Northern Pintail, small numbers of Redhead and Ring-billed Duck, a few Cinnamon Teal and American Coots. 1 porcupine in tree along Road 3 E - maybe the same one that was over by Colorado 15 in the past two weeks? Snow showers have melted off quickly, leaving mud instead. Leave your sandals at home. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds". [cobirds] Monte Vista area
Home Lake is still snow/ice covered, but the canal on the north side has open water. Today (March 4) there were 50-60 Common Mergansers and a Great Blue Heron in canal, and an imm. Bald Eagle and a Merlin on north side of canal The SWA on the north side is now close (breeding season). County Rd 3 has some raptors - Rough-Legged and Red-tailed and Bald Eagle, but did not see any owls. A big concentration of Sandhill Cranes is west of County Rd. 3, off Rd. 7. Despite warmer weather, there still isn't much open water on the refuge but lots of Can. Geese and Mallards have moved in, but just a couple of No. Shovelers so far. Could not spot any Cackling or Snow Geese. Here and there, a few Robins, Mourning and Eur.-Collared Doves, and plenty of Starlings, of course. [cobirds] Monte Vista NWR
This morning (2/26) I took a spin around the Monte Vista NWR and found many Sandhill Cranes present, despite the fact that fields in that area and the rest of the San Luis Valley are still covered with snow. My guestimation for cranes at the NWR today was 2,000 or more, plus several hundred on the wing. (Bear in mind that my counting skills are not the greatest.) Not much open water, but Northern Pintails have already found what little there is. Also on NWR were the usual Canada Geese and Mallards, a Bald Eagle, Red-tailed Hawk, small herd of elk, and a porcupine. NWR tour road and pull-outs are in excellent shape, as are main roads, but I advise staying on those. It was not there on my return trip at about 1:30 p.m. Also along CO Hwy 112, I saw 3 Bald Eagles just north of Del Norte with 2 remaining on my return trip. [cobirds] Bald Eagle, etc., Home Lake
At Home Lake, east of Monte Vista, a Bald Eagle (my first sighting for this season) made a pass over the hundreds of geese and ducks that were on the water, resulting in nothing but a brief lift off. Unusual numbers of Buffllehead (100-200), Northern Shoveler.,American Wigeon, etc. , and geese. I have been watching for scoters for a few weeks, in hopes of a repeat of White-winged Scoters, as there was a pair a couple of years in succession at Home Lake in November, but no luck so far in 2009. [cobirds] Rio Grande County novelties
At Rio Grande SWA (north of Home Lake) this AM (9/16), at least a dozen female Western Tanagers were feasting on insects in a clump of shrubs and trees and even on the dirt lane. In trees on south edge of Home Lake, two Warbling Vireos. On Home Lake, Western Grebes had some surprisingly young offspring with them - not babies, but much too young for migration, it seemed to me. Also at the lake, a Greater Yellowlegs, a few Am. Wigeons, Pied-billed and Eared Grebes, and, of course, Am. Coots. A Double-crested Cormorant overhead. First snow on mtns. last weekend, on west side of San Luis Valley. Have not heard about or seen Sandhill Cranes yet. Don't bother to phone the NWR office for info, as you will only get a recorded answer for staff and info.like last spring's crane festival!!
