You are right, it's an applet in Netscape, and HTML form in IE.

and it seemed to load an applet.

I don't get why they use an Applet. This applet simply makes a browser to
submit the HTTP request to the same ASP, where the HTML form does.

I do not see the need for it to be an applet, though.
There is nothing there that [D]HTML couldn't do.
But why make it simple? ;-)

BTW, I just played with the Adobe Accelio Capture demo, and it's
basically a java applet that displays and validates a form. Check it
out at http://apps.accelio.com/license/default.htm .

When the form is filled out correctly, it submits the data to a server,
and then gives you a printable (PDF) of the form you just filled out.
 This sounds like a good application of XForms + fo2pdf Serializer :D

Hello,

I was wondering whether anyone has submitted/or is thinking of
submitting a JSR for the MVC model that Cocoon uses since it seems to be
ahead of the current JSP (model 1) based approach. This would also help
to promote Cocoon as a reference implementation and raise the
consciousness of the wider community. Just a thought.

For further information see:

well, I don't remember who started the thread, not me though :)

I'll also need some sort of solution with large PDF files. The idea is that you come and launch report, and given a URL to check it later (when PDF is ready). The URL would point to a file on the disk, which will be stored for some time, say one day.

Cashing is for a different situation, which you described.

I still don't see how this will work with PDF.

PDF comes only from FOPSerializer. the last step in the pipeline. So, if you want to write its result on the disk, how can SWT be useful?

I thought, maybe it makes a sense to have a special type of transformer or serializers, which would save output on the hard disk, but pass the URL to the pipeline. so, there'll be uniform way to deal with this sort of situations.

on the other hand, having the caching configured properly would probably solve the problem too.

Title: RE: Can cocoon write pdf to a file?

will this code get .pdf file over HTTP?
if yes, then wouldn't it be more efficient if instead of that, you somehow directly write on the hard disk without loading a Web server?

why not to change FOPSerializer?

e.g. make it write the file on hard disk, then in the output stream will be only the URL to that file?

tell me what makes cocoon different from any other client EJB app? I just don't see the difference. if you may call EJBs from remote Java clients, what would prevent you from doing it from Cocoon's components?

only thing you need is the proper classpath, with all those client .jar (necessary to obtain JNDI contexts) and remote/home interfaces from the tree.

why? if it updates really rarely, you may cach it in your appserver or anywhere else in the memory.

frequency of updates itself is not a reason to go into dark forests of ldap from the shiny fields of RDBMS

if you deploy cocoon.war inside your application's .ear file you'll see everything, even EJBs, not to mention datasources.

when cocoon is deployed on your appserver, you can get an InitialContext of the JNDI server even easier, if it was a standalone app. I simply don't see a problem at all. I didn't have a necessity to call EJBs from Cocoon components yet, but I don't see any technical issues here.

There could be issues with exception handling, as Arthur mentioned. When XSP is compiled, it has to handle all exceptions. So, Arthur wrote that it's better to make EJB calls before rendering the page, in order to be able to dispatch the request to other pages when errors come. Otherwise, it's not a big deal to call EJB from inside Cocoon. sorry, no code attached :)

the same way as from any other servlet container or client, I guess.
I wouldn't put EJB calls inside lgicsheet itself in XSP, probably. I'd use helper classes.

from regular components, such as generators, lookup JNDI and do whatever you do in your regular client EJB code.

agree,
DB2 is not bad. I meant that sexy bunch of software is not to be 100% open. why
would I want open RDBMS? I've no clue in inner workings of databases, I'll never

probably equally good choices. for development you may get them for free, I

  One
  could certainly argue that DB2 is as sexy or sexier than Oracle; the fact that
  Oracle 8 lacks true outer join makes it down right ugly if you ask me...
  In any case, my real reason for responding is to say that I would consider
  jBoss "sexy" anyone that's had to do a manual EJB deploy using something other

get C2.0.3 working on iPlanet 6.5. Definitely, it wasn't that simple as
putting .war file in deployment folder

maybe you better start deploying on iPlanet, then post your problems here.

I wonder how many ppl do Cocoon on East Coast? If more than 3 then it's
enough to have a sort of workshop on Outer Banks some time :)

I'd love to come, but it's no way to arrange a trip from DC on that short

RE: How to write XSL for PDF?

2002-07-10 Thread Argyn Kuketayev

If you are ready to go with commercial product, then it makes a sense to
look at non-XSL-FO products too.

E.g. www.faceless.org has Faceless report generator. Its advantage is that
its input format is very similar to HTML, you have to make it valid xml
document ( instead of ) though. So, if you want to generate the
HTML document, then the XSLT template is almost the same. FOP doesn't
generate HTML. RenderX provides fo2html script to make HTML out of XSL-FO,
but it's an extra step from XML content.

Faceless reporter may be integrated into Cocoon as a serializer, I've done
for fun, works well.

Andrew,

that message was hidden in the noise. "Trolling" references, "cathedral and
bazaar" mentions and other off-topic subjects did not help you, guys, to
deliver the message. I'm left with the mixed feeling. At the end, I see that
people recognize the issue and think of solutions, but at the same time the
first reaction ("He's giving up? Let him go.") is shocking. Also, repeating
theme from many developers is MONEY, every other message advises me to pay
MONEY. It's all off-topic. I'm amazed how experienced USENET, FIDO people
were lost in off-topic. Forget "Cathedral...", there's an issue. Solve it.
We are not Free Software Prophets, we are programmers. Let's be pragmatic.

I'm not complaining, it's just my poor English :)

I always look at samples and docs. The issue is that there's not enough of
them. And some people deny the very existance of this issue.

However the docs are improving, and the message of this topic has been
gotten, at least by few developers. Others are still in denial mode, but
it's Ok.

Maybe I'm suffering from dislexia, but reading the docs in
xml.apache.org/cocoon helped me only to understand the highest level
concepts. There were lots of tiny little issues which are not covered
anywhere in the documentation. "What's the best way to do this and this?".
No answers anywhere but here, in the mailing list. Ok, I have a habit to
look into sources when I've time, but sometimes there's no time. You came
here and ask a question, hopefully soon you get an answer. Then comes
another issue, then another and so on. Finally, you spend whole day on some
stupid problem which could be resolved with good FAQ.

I have to admit that things are improving with docs. FAQs are becoming real
FAQs, not those short "read mailing list" as they were before. IBM's
tutorials are a very positive step, I recommend them to everybody. They help
a lot. Again, I'm not complaining I just want to say that there's an issue,
and I'm glad that the situation with documentation is improving. I think
that the biggest issue with Cocoon is its docs.

Wake up, guys! John raised a real issue. You can't simply say "Don't give
up, be patient, read mailing-list, look into sources..." and so on. If you
want this framework to catch the train, then there must be better support
and better documentation.

I'm not complaining, by the way. I'd love Cocoon become a mainstream
framework.

RE: SQLTransformer, multiple execute-query siblings?

2002-06-21 Thread Argyn Kuketayev

Your example shows that it's possible to have one nested query inside
another one. But it doesn't show that you may have sibling nested queries.

as far as I remember, you can have only one child (nested query), but that
child can have one child too and so on. you can't have this:
  http://apache.org/cocoon/SQL/2.0";>
http://apache.org/cocoon/SQL/2.0";>

  select id,name from department_table

   select id,name from employee_table where department_id =

   select id,name from employee_table where department_id =

> I've to correct me on this one. My short looks into the source
> were obviously not enough ...
>
> This example is taken from
> http://xml.apache.org/cocoon/userdocs/transformers/sql-transfo
rmer.html

  http://apache.org/cocoon/SQL/2.0";>
http://apache.org/cocoon/SQL/2.0";>

  select id,name from department_table

   select id,name from employee_table where department_id =

So according to the user docs this *is* possible. (Haven't testet it
though)

RE: SQLTransformer, multiple execute-query siblings?

2002-06-21 Thread Argyn Kuketayev

maybe I'm wrong, but it didn't look very difficult to me at that time (two
months ago). The issue was with stack of queries: whenever the new
 tag was ended, transformer would go up in the stack.
So, if there was a second nested query, then the tranformer would mess up

RE: SQLTransformer, multiple execute-query siblings?

2002-06-21 Thread Argyn Kuketayev

it doesn't support two nested queries on the same level of nesting, as far
as I remember after looking at C2.0.1 sources. I don't think it's fixed.

Workaround is:
1. modify source codes
2. use XSP

I use XSP with ESQL

FYI: performance tests

2002-06-18 Thread Argyn Kuketayev

We are playing with Cocoon's performance tests. Here's some results, if u r
interested.

We run everything on my dual Pentium III, 1.4 Ghz, 2Gb RAM. Cocoon 2.0.3,
WebLogic 6.1sp2, under Sun jdk1.3.1 hotspot.

I'm generating a PDF document in three steps: generation XSP+ESQL,
transformation XSL-FO, serialization to PDF with FOP serializer.

1. I've read here that Saxon is faster than the default transformer. I
changed a transformer to Saxon, I didn't notice any increase in performance
running one concurrent user.
Time to generate PDF is: 3.1 sec, size 19Kb, 13 pages.
XSP+ESQL serialized into XML takes 1.2 secs, size 55Kb
XSL-FO takes 1.6 secs, size 103Kb

2. Load test. We run the script on other PC over 100Mbps network. It logs on
100 concurrent users, they launch the same PDF report several times.
Average time to generate the same PDF report is ~41 secs.

3. Sun JDK 1.3.1 in classic VM runs at least 2 times slower.

4. JRockit runs Cocoon faster with a single user, we didn't test it yet with
multiple users. Also, JRockit is unpredicatble, sometime it's very fast,
then gets slower.
Time to generate PDF is: 2.6 sec, size 19Kb, 13 pages.
XSP+ESQL serialized into XML takes 1 secs, size 55Kb
XSL-FO takes 1.4 secs, size 103Kb

5. Instead of PDF, I used fo2html from www.renderex.com to generate HTML
files (size 72Kb). The same document takes 1.9 secs to generate with both
Sun JVM and JRockit.

6. We have "old" code to make PDF files, it uses rootriver component. It
imperatively creates PDF files. In the same load test it was able to
generate a document in avg 21 secs, twice faster than with Cocoon.

FOP serializer is 4-5 times slower in C2.0.3 than from command line

2002-06-14 Thread Argyn Kuketayev

I've a pipeline with
1 XSP (generates content) - 1.7 seconds
2 XSL (transforms it to XSL-FO) - 2.7
3. FOP (serializes into PDF) - 14.3

I measured time by terminating each step with xml serializer to see the
ouput in a browser.

My concern is the last step. When I ran FOP 0.20.3 from the command-line, it
takes me 2.5 seconds to ouput the PDF from xsl-fo file, and 2.8 seconds from
xml file with xsl stylesheet. I used the xml file from step 1, xsl-fo file
from step 2, and the same xslt stylesheets as in Cocoon.

So, PDF generation from Cocoon with FOP takes more time than from
command-line. I'm in trouble, my friends. I may end-up spending this
week-end to figure out what's going on, and would appreciate any tips.

thanks a lot,

RE: cocoon2.1 on WebLogic6.1 sp2

2002-06-13 Thread Argyn Kuketayev

here are the patches Vadim recommended me to install:
CR064650, CR064449, CR065213, CR064391

I managed to make Cocoon work even without these patches, as Vadim advised
me , I had to remove all dots from jar file names, and all manifest.mf files
from these jars.

I didn't perform step 3) and 4) as in the document you refer to.

Also, I found one strange thing: if I put two class names in load-class
parameter of web.xml for Cocoon, then somehow the whitespace between them is
not recognized! I suspect that it's the impact of puiting
xercerImpl-2.0.0.jar in the beginning of the classpath. jBoss worked well,
and iPlanet and WLS couldn't handle two jdbc driver class names in
"load-class". I don't have time to address this issue right now, so I simply
changed force-load method in CocoonServlet to hardcode the loading. I'll
return to the problem later.

C2.0.1 ESQL/XSP + UTF-8 encoded Japanese characters in Oracle

2002-06-07 Thread Argyn Kuketayev

Here's my problem:

I use esql tags inside XSP to generate XML from the Oracle database with
UTF-8 encoding. English characters work fine.

Then comes the issue with Japanese characters:
1. every Chinese or Japanese character is encoded in 3 bytes in UTF-8, and
stored in the varchar2 column.
2. when I use esql logicsheets to make XML file from Oracle, the XSP is
converted into Java file. inside Java I can see that it uses getString()
method of ReslutSet object.
Unfortunately, getString() returns a String object with three characters per
every chinese character. What happens is that Oracle jdbc driver makes one
character for every byte in the database. So, the character has empty higher
byte, and lower byte is one of the bytes of UTF-8 representation of chinese
character.
Then Cocoon gets the incorrect String, it puts &#NMUBER; for every
character, so XML has totally wrong strings.

I couldn't make Oracle to return correct String representation of data in
the database. Changing the regional settings is not the option.

Now, our Web application (without cocoon) works fine! How come?
I'll explain:
getString() returns WRONG string with three characters per one chinese. Then
JSP page uses out.print() method. This method thinks "I'm English, I see
three characters, I have to convert them into English. I'll simply cut upper
bytes". So, print throws just three bytes, and they are RIGHT bytes! Then
browser sees that the page is UTF-8 encoded, takes three bytes, and shows
them as correct ONE chinese character.

The question is: what shall I do?

1. If I somehow make getString() to return me correct String, then seemingly
my JSPs will break - they will try to print correct character by cutting the
upper byte.

2. If I change Cocoon to use something similar to out.print() from JSP, then
it may break when somebody changes the regional settings (?).

iPlanet iAS 6.5 + C2.0.3 - comments/CR in init-params of servlet

2002-06-07 Thread Argyn Kuketayev

It seems that when I deploy webapp in iPlanet 6.5, it doesn't handle
properly the init-parameters of the servlet if they have comments or new
lines.

did anybody see this?

particularly, load-class init parameter in web.xml of CocoonServlet has
comments and new lines, so it's not read properly. When I removed comments
and new lines, it works.

Argyn
I wonder how Sun manages to sell iPlanet for money?

iAS behaves very strangely. It expands all jars from WEB-INF folder when
webapp is deployed. I can see all classes from there.

Initially, it iAS didn't see anything from there. So, I put everything in
iAS classpath. Cocoon was working.

Then I removed all classes from the classpath, and left only parsers in iAS
classpath. It was still working. So, now I'm not sure how it works,
honestly.

Another problem I just encountered: ESQL samples don't work at all. So, I
put hardcoded class loading inside CocoonServlet.forceLoad() method of
hsqldb driver. ESQL sample works now. I see that there's a garbage in
"load-class" parameter when it's read from web.xml file.

I'm pretty sure that web.xml and cocoon.xconf are Ok, because I didn't
change them. I ported the whole thing from Tomcat to iPlanet. the same war
works fine with Tomcat 4.0.1, as well as esql example from cocoon.

On iPlanet 6.5 that error is thrown for both esql sample of Cocoon and my
custom xsps with Oracle database.

I suspect that something's wrong with "load-class" parameter in web.xml.
classes12.zip is in iPlanet's classpath, and my other application works with
Oracle driver fine.

What might be the cause?

I configured web.xml. cocoon.xconf for Oracle driver.

C2.0.3 Deployment on iPlanet 6.5 tips

2002-06-06 Thread Argyn Kuketayev

Finally, it seems that I made it work on iPlanet 6.5 iAS (not Web server).

iPlanet comes with jaxp.jar and parser.jar files in its classpath, which are
located in \ias6\ias\classes\java\jaxp folder. I thought that I
can remove these files, but it seems that iPlanet is configured (or
hardcoded) somehow, that it tries to load the particular Parser from those
jars. I didn't figure out yet how to change that in order to make it work
with any parser in the classpath. The parser they use is from Sun, it
doesn't implement some methods, which breakes Cocoon with NoSuchMethodError
run-time error.

So, I put xercesXXX.jar and xml-apis.jar from Cocoon's WEB-INF/lib in the
beginning of the classpath. The iPlanet classpath is edited by kregedit
utility, the kay is "\SOFTWARE\iPlanet\Application
Server\6.5\Java\ClassPath". The above two jars must come before jaxp.jar and
parser.jar, indeed.

Then I built the cocoon.war file. In addition to web.xml, iPlanet needs
ias-web.xml file in WEB-INF folder. You have to create it yourself, here's
the sample:
 START ias-web.xml

http://developer.iplanet.com/appserver/dtds/IASWebApp_1_0.dtd'>

Cocoon2
{F3F92B34-D2D9-4FFE-A961-CC25A15FC3FA}

  false
  false
  10
  false

lite
dsync-distributed
last-access
false

 END ias-web.xml

The most interesting thing is element. iPlanet requires GUID for
every servlet to be run. There's a utility called "kguidgen", it generates
GUID for you.

As for the rest of the elements, I've no clue about them :) I suspect they
are not required at all.

To deploy Cocoon, I used the following command:
iasdeploy deploymodule -verbose cocoon.war

If it's successfully deployed, then you can launch it with
http://localhost/NASApp/cocoon/

In my configuration I have both iPlanet Web Server and App Server installed.
So, "NASApp" is the context for apps deployed on App server.

Apparently the war file name becomes the servlet's context if you deploy it
as a module. You can also deploy Cocoon as an application. To do that you
simply package it in "ear" file. Here's nothing fancy, no vendor specific
files, just ordinary "application.xml" in META-INF.

thanks,
Argyn

Cocoon and container's parsers

2002-06-06 Thread Argyn Kuketayev

Some containers come with default parser which are not compatible with
Cocoon. So, Cocoon requires to change container's settings, e.g. remove
"old" parsers from classpath and replace them with xerces etc.

Would it be good to allow Cocoon use its own parser? So that in the
classpath we'll have the "old" parser, but Cocoon will use its own. This way
other application will be Ok, even if they need a specific parser in the
classpath which is incompatible with Cocoon.

iPlanet 6.5 + C2.0.1 problem with init() of the servlet

I'm trying to deploy Cocoon.war on iPlanet 6.5 server.

So far, it seems that iPlanet doesn't see jars in WEB-INF/lib. I expanded

I added ias-web.xml file with GUID for the servlet. Now, when I try to call
cocoon, I see this in the log:

I also tried to expand all fjars and put into WEB-INF/classes folder. It
didn't work. Neither deploying .ear file helped.

Any help appreciated

unfortunately, C2 installation document doesn't say anything about iPlanet

I see that ESQL generates the following code:

==
  _esql_query = new EsqlQuery((ResultSet)

(_esql_query.getCallableStatement().getString(3)
)
  );
{
  if (_esql_query.hasResultSet()) {
do {
  _esql_query.getResultRows();

  if (_esql_query.nextRow()) {

  } else {

  }
  _esql_query.getResultSet().close();

} while(_esql_query.getMoreResults());
  } else {

  }
}

The source is way too long, sorry.

C2.0.1 - esql stored proc problem

2002-04-05 Thread Argyn Kuketayev

I have two nested queries and one nested stored procedure call. I couldn't
get resluts from the stored procedure. Cocoon says:
org.apache.cocoon.ProcessingException: Exception in
ServerPagesGenerator.generate(): java.lang.ClassCastException:

here's a fragment of XSP.

  select ...

  )}

I couldn't get what's wrong.

the lack of dicumentation is a major obstacle on the way to a commercial
success. it also send a message to potential users that developers are not
really committed to the product. the wrong message, actually :)

can you give a complete example of how to do that?

I have a similar issue, I need to pass parameters from the request into the
stylesheet.

RE: Cocoon2: ESQL nested queries optimization

that's what I want to avoid. I'm trying to work out the way to design a
reporting module, so that report developer don't have to mess with Java.

oh, yes, I'm putting sub-queries inside . so they appear to
be called for every row, that's what bothers me.

I can make a nested query. It works fine. But it seems to me that it makes
sql select queries from C and F tables in a database for every row in M
table.

If I'd write a Java code, I'd do this:
select * from M where ...;

then I'd make two other calss like below:
select * from C where C.ID in (...)
select * from F where F.ID in (...)

where (...) a comma separated list of IDs from query to M.

I'd lke to avoid writing any Java code, because I'm developing the reporting
module, and wish users could limply define their queries in XML/XSP files.

What would you suggest to optimize querying with ESQL?

thanks,
Argyn

Thank you, Marty!

I don't know what was the problem, I was doing almost the same. Now it
works.

I've done a number of nested queries in C1.8.2 and as far as I know the
approach is the same in C2. Here is an example:

   select Distinct Contribute.Centity_id, Contribute.role
FROM Contribute , Collection_resources where
Collection_resources.Collection_id=collectionID and
Collection_resources.rid=Contribute.rid

SQL error - contact the ilumina
administrator

select count(distinct Contribute.rid) from Contribute,
Collection_resources where centity_id= and
Contribute.rid=Collection_resources.rid and
Collection_resources.Collection_id=collectionID

select first_name, last_name from Centity where
centity_id=

  ,

Cocoon2: couldn't make nested queries work for ESQL in XSP.

2002-03-25 Thread Argyn Kuketayev

I've to make a report on the table M, then for each row I need to show
corresponding rows from tables F and C.

Something like this:

1

f1

  ...

c1

...

I tried this :

It didn't work with an exception:

org.apache.cocoon.ProcessingException: Exception in
ServerPagesGenerator.generate(): java.lang.RuntimeException: Error executing
prepared statement: select ... from f where M_ID = ? :
java.sql.SQLException: ORA-01722: invalid number

Can somebody give me a WORKING and tested example of nested queries in
Cocoon2?

thanks,
Argyn
