Re: Newbie - how do I get URL request params in sitemap

2002-02-01 Thread java guru

you could just look at the 'redirect' pattern example
in the default sitemap.. there the request param
'dest' is extracted out of the parameters and passed
on to redirector.

hope that helps.

Re: Not able to start cocoon

2002-02-07 Thread java guru

hi.,
This is most generic error u have posted here and
nothing can be concluded from this. As numerous other
mail lists points from archive, the sitemap needs to
be compiled by cocoon before it starts its operation.

Any error in the sitemap sytax or the components
specified in the sitemap having trouble would result
in sitemap NOT GETTING compiled and hence u see this
error. But solution most of the time is simple..

Please CHECK your log as the ERROR SUGGESTS. Read
it line by line.. all along u will see whats going on
.. and u will at some point see any trouble cocoon
encounterd during sitemap compilation.. Try to fix
THAT trouble or post it mailing list..

hope this helps

question with xsp and cocoon with linux x11

2001-06-17 Thread java guru

hi guys.,
I am trying to get cocoon run on my linux box. I
have two problems..

1. I had to run tomcat(cocoon) from gui (X)
..otherwise its complaining about svg stuff...any work
arounds?

2. I tried to use xsp but the log is complaining
something about sitemap_xmap class not found problems
and then xsp/form-validator.xsl not found stuff...

Any help in this regard is highly appreciated and
sorry if i am posting questions which someone else
would have already posted...

Thanks

Re: The sitemap handler's sitemap is not available

2001-06-20 Thread java guru

I am not sure if this solves your problem... You have
posted the log from the point where it said sitemap
handler not found...I am also newbie..but what i
observed is that when u start the
cocoon(http://localhost:8080/cocoon) it first try to
compile the sitemap...ANY SITEMAP COMPILE ERRORS would
results in subsequent "sitemap handler not found"
errors. So I alwasy look beyond the "sitemap not found
error" in the log to see if there were any prior
errors after the cocoon started(i delete the log
before starting cocoon so that what i have in log
after start is fresh)...

For example when i run cocoon on my redhat linux thru
command line the sitemap couldnt get compiled resulted
in "sitemap handler not found"..but when i look at the
log from the beginning..i see this svg stuff
error..java swing related ( not be able to connect to
display 0.0) error which in turn resulted in sitemap
not being compiled... then i started the server from
gui environment and everything worked fine

Hope this helps..

performance inquiry

2001-06-20 Thread java guru

Hi.,
I am begining of developing a
standalone/networked/web application. But need to
decide what to use. C2 attracted be 'coz of many cool
features i might use in the future..

But performance issues scares me I need advice..

The application need to run standalone or networked
like web app...Considering this..

1. Is it better to do with servlet and jsp: In this
case i have problem with connection pooling and o/r
mapping to database

2. Is it better to use xml stuff with c2: In this i
fear for performance. I fear it might demand high end
configuration user systems compared to no1..

Please advice
thanks

c2 db application authentication...

2001-06-25 Thread java guru

Hi.,
I am trying to use the db authentication module
that comes with c2. I could successfully authenticate
user first time and put some info about user like user
name into session...

But what i need is to authenticate the user on
subsequent visits to each application area(actions)
separately. For that what i thought was to use the
same dbauthenticator for each "pattern" with "action"
encoded as request param..but also need to get the
username from session and let the dbauthenticator do
authentication againt separate table to see if the
particular user can access that particular resource..

But i dont think the current db authenticator has some
way of indication to take particular parameter NOT
from request but from session

I hope i explained my problem without confusingis
there any workaround for this or do i need to modify
the dbauthenticator?

Appreciating ur help

Re: Creating XML files using normal Java Servlets?

2001-06-27 Thread java guru

1. Unfortunately, i am not sure about this...but i
believe it can be done.

2. I have similar requirement, the way i am gonna
deal with that is thru patterns. C2 offers different
patterns serve from same resources(xml file or
xsp)..for example, i have put all my xsp in doc
folder..then i have two patterns in my sitemap (i)
html/* for all the html rendering (ii) pdf/* for all
pdf rendering...

In sitemap, these patterns would have same generator
but different transformer/serializer...

And when user choose for particular format, i simple
request the specific pattern url..

HOpe this helps...and please let me know if u guys
come-up with better approach..

Re: cocoon.log

2001-06-27 Thread java guru

***This is not SERIOUS error:

By default, c2 uses hsql database. This db can be run
in various modes (server, in-memory, file, stand-alone
etc ..refer to hsql db docs). C2 try to use file mode,
which means c2 would simply create db connection pool
pointing to hsql db files. And the file location
indicated here in error is the location c2 is trying
to access..and obviously it could not be found (
install.war environment variable)...

To deal with this,

1. You can take out the pooling stuff from c2(.xconf)
but the sql examples wouldnt work

2. Put the absolute path to the hsql db properties
file

3. I run hsql db outside of c2 as server, so I change
the db url in cocoon.xconf as jdbc server url of
hsqldb..

Hope this helps..

sessions and sitemap

2001-06-27 Thread java guru

Hi.,
I dont quite remember if someone has already posted
this..

But i wanted all my stylesheets to use some parameters
specific to user(from session) like page colors etc..

I am of the impression that the stylesheet cannot
access the user session..so it need to get the info
from sitemap... But how sitemap could get the info
from session and pass it onto style sheet ?..

Your help is appreciated...

Re: C2: initialization error

2001-06-27 Thread java guru

Hi Martin.,
As you might already know., the way c2 works is it
tries to compile the sitemap at the start-up..for some
reasons, the sitemap cannot get compiled and we would
encounter such errors. The description of error on
screen is so generalized 'coz for cocoon, the problem
is sitemap didnt get proper compilation. The cause
could be anything..which is probably described
somewhere in cocoon.log..

Best way to debug is

1. Shutdown the cocoon and servlet engine.
2. Delete the cocoon.log
3. Restart cocoon
4. Try to access the url..it fails
5. Goto cocoon.log
6. Lots of messages there, but look for ones with some
error descriptions..you may get a clue
7. Still cannot figure out? attache the log(zip it if
needed) and send mail with very specifics of
everything to this mailing list.
8. Many people ask for specifics 'coz this error is so
generalized, its impossible to tell just from the
message..

Good luck

C2: Need to send SESSION parameter to stylesheet

2001-06-28 Thread java guru

I might be posting this question again 'coz i couldnt
get the right answer last time..

Is there anyway to expose the session to sitemap so
that sitemap could extract some params from session
and passthem onto stylesheets???

May be there is work-around..

Thanks in advance

Re: sitemap installation error

2001-06-29 Thread java guru

1. If u are not able to run c2.( with sitemap errors
stuff)..then the classnotfoundexception is NOT the
reason...this error is always there for me., as this
error is attributed to the web.xml trying to load ibm
class for websphere..so the problem is something
else...

2. As per the pre-compile is concerned, I have tried
to precompile xsp with the options specified in
faq..but as u mentioned the compile process is getting
stuck...If u hear anything about this, i would love to
get that info too...thanks

Re: C2 - sitemap handler's sitemap not available

2001-07-02 Thread java guru

Hi.,
This start-up sitemap handler's problem is so
general that it has been discussed many times in this
forum..you may search in the mail archieve..

Anyway, following briefing should help..

1. Sitemap handler exception is throws whenever there
is problem compiling sitemap at c2 startup. The
reasons could be anything from sitemap syntax error to
improper jars to classpath problems to svg display not
set(in linux systems invoking c2 NOT from gui
environment)..

2. So please,
   (i) stop c2
   (ii) delete the cocoon.log
   (iii) restart the c2
   (iv) try to access c2
   (v) if error occurs, goto cocoon.log and go thru it
patiently. You will find all the debug messages there
explaining what went on..
(vi) some problems like jdbc classloading and
webshphere class loading can be ignored initially..
(vii) if the problem is still not figured...then
post the message with log and your environment details

good luck

funny problem with sitemap & session validator

2001-07-02 Thread java guru

Hi.,
1. The following match pattern is used in examples to
read/generate the image/file requested as {1}

2. Say for example, i need to serve the page/image
after i validate the user session. So I have included
the above match pattern inside the session validator
action.

3. But i am having problem serving the page/image.
Cocoon2 is not able to get the name of page/image
requested by {1} anymore and its looking for something
like ".xsp" or ".gif" and failing to locate obviously.

Any input in this regard is highly appreciated..

Re: Help... C2- How to dynamically create new pages without recompiling sitemap?

2001-07-03 Thread java guru

Hi.,
If u see the cocoon2 sitemap. it has something like
patterns which map the user request to the actual
document to be published. And you can use wildcards in
the patterns to send the web pages dynamically to the
user. So i think the web page(or xsp or image) names
to be requested need not be tied in sitemap.

I am not sure if ur requirement is something else but
this way it should solve your problem. If u want to
serve the web pages of each owner by different url
patterns then you simply create separate patterns for
each owner but leave the actual document name(webpage)
to be requested by ther user to the wildcard stuff...

Hope this helps

Re: [C2] - trying out Simple SQL

2001-07-03 Thread java guru

Hi.,
The poolable error i got in the instances where the
connection pool couldnt be created for any reason..so

1. You could specify jdbc driver properties in
database.properties and then go ahead with build
process. That way the correct jdbc properties would be
propagated to different parts of the build. You dont
need to change any other files(like web.xml etc)...

2. Make sure the jdbc driver you are using is
accessable to cocoon..I mean the jar file of the
driver is included in the c2 classpath.

Everything should work fine now...

Again poolable error is 'coz the c2 couldnt create the
connection pool for some reason

good luck

Re: forms in coocon2, is SchemoX dead ?

2001-07-16 Thread java guru

I have posted similar requirement sometime back but no
response...Meantime here is what i found

1. XForm from nanoworks
http://xform.nanoworks.org/

I tried this but didnt feel comfortable to fit in with
cocoon2..

I think the form processing in c2 with form-validator
stuff is slowly moving towards this goal of full blown
form processing and validation..

I was really(and desperately) looking for simple and
effective mechanism to describe forms in xml and have
someother component deal with preparing form and
handling the validation stuff...Hope that arrives
soon...

Re: AW: forms in coocon2, is SchemoX dead ?

2001-07-16 Thread java guru

I agree about the xform and xfdl..In future, i guess,
these concepts would go beyond just form validation
and handling..

For now, from this discussion, I understand that we
are all looking for some form of automated/simplified
form generation/validation and handling..am i right?..

There is a design proposal on SchemoX website to make
it run with cocoon2..anyone had look at it?

And also, there are efforts on going with current
cocoon reg form validation and other stuff...they seem
to follow the xform approach from nanotech..but not
sure if the original author has intent of extending it
to be full blown form generator/validator/handler or
not...

fixed length messages

2001-07-18 Thread java guru

Hi.,
I know this is not right forum to ask...out of
choice..here is my question..

I am trying to convert a normal data(from database or
simply from hashtable) paired as field/value into a
fixed length message string..meantime i need to
specify which field go to which position of the output
message along with what kinda formatting should be
done on the data before replacing into the message..

I thought of using xml to define the field names,
positions and format options, provide the raw data and
expect the entire message come out...

Is there any open source options regarding this? or
any ideas..

Again sorry for posting it here..
Thanks

Re: [C2.0b1] bug(?) in XSP

2001-07-20 Thread java guru

I guess .. What Mr.Drasko refering here is

For example

1. You have two sub sitemaps say test1 and test2
2. Both of them have some pattern called "index" to
serve a xsp called index.xsp.
3. Both sitemaps are set up to serve the index.xsp
from their respective sub-folder called "docs".
4. But the content of the both index.xsp 's is diffent
from each other.
5. Now when you access the first sub-sitemap pattern
index. The index.xsp is compiled into
www/docs/index_xsp.java and then served

6. Funny part now is if u try to access "index"
pattern from second sitemap "test2".

7. Incase, c2 try to compile the index.xsp from this
context, the package created in tomcat work directory
would still be www/docs/index_xsp.java over writing
the first one.

8. Whats worser is for caching(or whatever reason) c2
decides NOT to compile but to serve the same class
file and serve the wrong contents.

Hope this complements Mr.Drasko's point and make the
problem clearer ..

Or may be this is not problem at all and there is some
explanation...

Re: [C2.0b1] bug(?) in XSP

2001-07-20 Thread java guru

The simple answer for all the "concrete example" is
YES. I tried the exact situation i described..and c2
is not acting as anticipated...rather its compiling
both docs/index.xsp(precisely its only compiling the
first one and not second one as its finding the class
file already compiled from first one) into same
package..

Thanks in advance

Hi.,

1. Use jdk1.4 which ships with swing NOT requiring x
terminal

2. Use xserver Xvfb which runs in background with-out
requiring the display terminal(physical) -- I use this

bug 2737 still exists...xsp compilation package

2001-07-24 Thread java guru

Hi.,
I am checking on the the previously reported bug
2737. I think the problem still exists.

Following is the scenario after bug fix

For example you have two subsite maps "test1" and
"test2"..

1. Have same pattern and same src path in xmap's of
both sitemaps

2. But the content of the xsp served is different.

3. I anticipate both xsp to be compiled into different
packages based on sitemaps and result in separate
content..

After bugfix is applied this is what happening..

xsp are compiled into package according to the
following rules(at least what i observed is)

1. Prefix with org.apache.cocoon.www
2. attach the request pattern specified in xmap
3. attach the src specified in xmap for the pattern..

Please observe point 2..when considering the pattern,
c2 is not considering the subsitemap name as part of
pattern name. Its only considering the pattern
specified in xmap..

So again, for example
if subsitemaps test1, test2 both have pattern
/form/testform,
src pointing to docs/forms/index.xsp

Now c2 is preparing the xsp code like
org/apache/cocoon/www/form/testform/docs/forms/index_xsp.java
which is gonna be same for both subsitemap
compilations

Re: AW: anyone with resin and c2?

2001-07-25 Thread java guru

Thanks for the reply..
But under same setup..resin is complaining about

XSLTContext which is in dom.jar and someother class
which is jaxp.jar .. so i am forced to keep them with
name startring with (to make them endup at the end
of classpath)..

resin starts now..but upon xsp example, i get
getTransformer:javax.xml.transform.stream.StreamSource

Any idea?

Thanks in advance..

Re: Help : Taking the plunge - cocoon

2001-07-26 Thread java guru

Hi.,
I started with cocoon2 . If u decide to use it, then
goto xml.apache.org install section...

Its listed there to what software is required..

And its better to goto compatible and well tested
servlet engine ( I would say tomcat is good)..

Once you get started, you can always post problems
here :-)

request authentication using cocoon2

Hi.,

for a request only if the user is authenticated to
access the uri..

is there anyway to implement this in cocoon2 without
actually using the authentication code in xsp?

Re: serialization

2001-07-27 Thread java guru

May be these suggestions are too primitive..but try if
u want...

1. ur requirement i guess to trigger writing of xml
file out to disk on server by a http request..

2. Now what do u plan to send as response to http
request?..

3. If u still want to write from xsp to disk..then you
might as well look into log.xsl..it has some code
which enable you to write whatever u want to disk from
xsp..(again this might be silly idea)..

perfomance inprovements to c2

2001-07-28 Thread java guru

Hi.,
I am looking into improving the performance of c2
for specific platforms..

Following are the queries i have ... they might be
silly...but any input is highly appreciated...

1. c2 uses the parser and xslt parser developed in
java..

2. Is it possible to use platform specific c++ version
of them wrapped around java may be using jni / some
other stuff.. Like the wrap arounds are used for java
compilers..

3. Shouldnt it improve the performance of c2?(atleast
if we know the target application platform)

Hi.,
i am very thankful for the insight provided by
couple of folks..but honestly, like my former buddy
mentioned, lets not start "religious war" here on this
mailing list

This very definitely gave me some insight to what the
c++/java relation meant..

Thanks guys..

Re: How to program for Cocoon2?

2001-07-30 Thread java guru

Hi.,
The 101 of c2 is that every http request to c2 is
mapped to some resource. This mapping is done in
sitemap..

Good start is to open sitemap file and look for the
sample request(hello.svg) you mentioned...

One more thing to remember for starter is the request
can be mapped 1-to-1 or by means of wildcard(ie saying
that any request that comes like
http://localhost:8080/cocoon/doc/* where * couldbe any
name like test.html or test1.html )...

Good luck

Re: reg xml database with cocoon2

2001-07-30 Thread java guru

Thanks man.,
The reason i am looking into is that
1. my application is "new" and doesnt have any db
design with it

2. All the data model for the application is already
done in xml. So all the data objects are represented
as xml nodes

3. If i need to do same with rdbms, then i need to
have all those design/implementation interfaces for
xml nodes to db and db to xml nodes...

Thanks again..

Re: Cocoon and Databases

2001-07-31 Thread java guru

Hi.,
C2(or any java stuff) need something called
jdbc(java database connectivity) driver to connect to
any database. This is similar in concept to ODBC
driver enabling the applications access database.

Various databases have their own specific java jdbc
drivers. But all the databases supporting odbc have
one common jdbc driver developed and it is JDBC-ODBC
driver since it is java jdbc layer over odbc
driver...Follow the steps

1. Create odbc entry on ur windows machine for ur
ms-access db

2. Know how to specify a jdbc driver information on c2

3. Read little bit about jdbc-odbc driver(all u need
is proper driver name, url(nothing but a string
specifying link to ur odbc stuff), user id/password is
u have set it up on odbc setup...

4. The interpreter you mentioned is nothing but the
jdbc-odbc driver and ships with your standard jdk by
sun and other vendors

If u still not able to get thru..drop in mail and i
will provide some example..

good luck

Re: beginner

2001-08-01 Thread java guru

Hi.,
You could do it either wayif u dont want any of
c2 default sitemap components then u can modify the
main sitemap and put ur xml&xsl as per the examples
provide...or if u prefer to keep the main c2 examples
and build ur project separately, then look at the
subsitemap examples...

I follow the subsitemap method for development and
then plan to deploy on main sitemap in prod...

c2 package names driving me crazy...

2001-08-01 Thread java guru

Hi.,
I have been following the pre-compile/package stuff
with c2 for a while now...every time they end up
different and problamatic...

1. Before the precompiled packages were created in
sequence which makes it possible for two different
documents belonging to separate sitemaps ending up at
the same place...

2. Now when i precompile following package pattern is
followed for xsps
package
org.apache.cocoon.www.file_C_.tmp.test.xml_cocoon2.webapp;

3. When i deployed c2 onto my tomcat3.2.2 (and
modified web.xml instructing to pick up classes from
/web-inf/classes, instead of picking up packages
compiled earlier, it again started compiling but this
time with different package name as follows

package
org.apache.cocoon.www.file_C_.srini.jakarta_tomcat_3_2_2.webapps.cocoon;

4. From the names, it looks like the package names are
derived from the full directory path. If this is case,
how can i pre-compile xsps and deliver them to client
where the installation folders differ

Re: [C2] cocoon from scratch and sharing libs

2001-08-03 Thread java guru

Good idea.,
I was newbie to cocoon2 too but felt the
documentation(specially installation) step outlined at
the xml.apache.org were sufficient to get started.

One point to note here is that no matter how much is
documented, users(and newbies) are certain to have
problems. And this is specially true with
installation. One reason could be that, by nature of
c2/java tech being able to deploy onto numerous
platforms...

Enough said, we could start compiling the experiences
of other uses/newbies from mailing list and put them
onto some site like cocoon2 fan club..

Let me know if anyone would be interested...

Hi.,
Pardon me for posting this second time..but i had

The xsp precompiling is resulting in package names

trying to build them again

Any idea about what is the basic for c2 to decide the
package naming convension?

HI.,
I have tried the latest cvs..still the same
problem..the xsp precompile packages are build like

And clearly this path is derived from the physical

more problems?

couple of questions about latest build

2001-08-14 Thread java guru

Hi.,

2. The sitemap that comes with cvs version in webapp/
doesnt have pdfsearializer defined as serializer for
fo2pdf..but after build the sitemap has it...is there
any other place the build process pick up sitemap?..

3. what about this webapp.site? it has couple of
files..is there some purpose?

4. My precompile doesnt NOT compile the sub sitemaps
by default..any idea..

minimal sitemap for c2

2001-08-14 Thread java guru

Hi.,
I wanted to minimize the memory usage by c2 as the
server is extreemly memory sensitive...

1. Are there any hit areas in c2 where i can cut down
substantial memory usage(I mean buy taking certain
components out of sitemap or something like that..I
know this depends on what my appliation uses..)

2. If my application is gonna use only xsp, html along
with some db connection stuff...does anyone has
minimal sitemap working(with all other components
taken out..i hope to cut memory on this one)...

These question may sound silly but c2 is really
killing my machine by loading all the components at
once..

Thanks for ur time..

Re: testing against different versions of browsers

2001-08-16 Thread java guru

Hi.,
As i understand, the c2 functionality to operate
with different browsers depends simply on the
"User-Agent" string passed with http headers..(browser
can send multiple strings for user-agent like
mozilla..ie something like that)..

I had hell of time trying to make it work as i had to
know

1. What user-agent string are sent by various browsers
2. How to order them in-order to get prompt effect..

Best thing i think is to change the user-agent sent by
each browser(or each version)(and you can code any
string you want and map that in sitemap)..

Now issue of how to change the user-agent..so far i
have only succeeded with "Opera" browser, which
facilitates to change the user-agent to various
browser imitations(fixed number)...

May be new mozilla browser could be customized to
imitate also..

Good luck

RE: session-invalidator and back-button?

2001-08-16 Thread java guru

What do u mean?..the original question was "once he
logged out(which means the session is expired
purposefully) and push back button, the page is still
diplayed(from browser cache)"..

According to this the session is programatically
expired on logout so there is no session information
stored on server..and even if the browser try to get
the page from server, it would fail as the session is
already expired...

This is done very frequently in banking and public
email systems...

Again correct me if wrong..

Re: Getting read of the X server dependency

2001-08-16 Thread java guru

That is very true.,
I took out the batik stuff BECAUSE all of my
project could be re-arranged with static graphics
instead of svg..I would recommend to use it only if
its absolutely necessary...
There was substantical load decrease on server
after i took out batik...

And load testing is absolutely important...

have good time..

RE: reg c2 documentation HOW DO I

2001-08-16 Thread java guru

No offense..But i would love to have the things listed
in official faq..but there are tons of things that
people are asking on this list repeatedly for which
there are two really simple answers..

1. Please search thru the mailing list archive
2. Read the documentation..

Honestly, these answers are absolutely proper in their
own right. As i mentioned before, the documentation
mentioned at the official site is very vast and
sufficient..But still people ask "how can do ..."
For example, how many time users have asked repeatedly
about "How do i run my c2 without running full X
server"?..

May be i am wrong in my perception...just a thought..

RE: Cannot get a Poolable before pool initialized

2001-08-17 Thread java guru

Hi.,
As per my experience..poolable ... problems are
basically caused by the c2 not able to negotiate the
jdbc connection and the reasons could be ..

1. The database is not up(which should not be case
here)..

2. Pool name is wrong(which should not be case here)..

3. The driver is not loaded properly(which may be case
here)..

>From the example you noted here, the case where you
are is working fine..which mean in case
of the driver is not loaded(guessing)..

Please make sure the driver class name is specified in
web.xml under load-class param..

and also make sure in the cocoon.log that you see the
driver class loaded...

Hope this helps..
have g'day

Re: Dreaded: Sitemap handler's sitemap is not available

2001-08-19 Thread java guru

Hi.,
I hate to say "search the mail archive" but here is
simple explanation...

1. Sitemap is one BIG java program to be compiled on
c2 startup...

2. Any problem resulting from sitemap compilation
could result in sitemap being NOT compiled and hence
"component for hint: sitemap not found"..

3. Now the reasons could range to anything and
everything..

4. Please note that JDBC problem reported is little
mis-leading as this does NOT pose any threat to
sitemap compilation and hence can be ignored for now..

5. Please delete the c2 log, restart the server, try
to access the main page ONLY once...stop the
server...read the log from BOTTOM UP...

6. 95% of the time, you get the clue..but if still
same..then zip the log and post it here...

7. As i hate to suggest, but you may want to search
mailing list archive..

good luck
