The bans were placed with an access higher than yours. You then tried to remove it and couldn't, but X let you unset the ban from the channel (since you could /mode #chan -b .), this is a "Feature", for instance you might want to free up some banlist entries so you can set some more bans. Then when the user rejoined it set the bans again (since they were still in X -- you didn't have access to remove them). Or am I missing something? -- You will remember something that you should not have forgotten.
RE: [Coder-Com] FW: X's unban... is that a bug?
But X did *NOT* notify me that I could not remove the ban in X. It said it removed the ban, when in actual fact, it did not. X should not notify a user that a ban is removed, unless that ban is able to be, and is, removed. And if it is removing the channel ban, rather than the one in X's db banlist, it should specify, so the user knows to differentiate between the two different types. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Richard Smith Sent: Wednesday, April 10, 2002 6:29 PM To: Undernet Coder-Com Subject: Re: [Coder-Com] FW: X's unban... is that a bug? this has not changed since the old X... you have enough access to remove the ban on the channel but not enough access to remove the ban in X, result, X removes the channel, but notify's you that you cannot remove the ban in X. -- Richard T Smith - [EMAIL PROTECTED] Technician, Media Design School Ltd. RE: [Coder-Com] X search feature
stoney, I'm all in favour of this idea. I think it would be very helpful. I'm not a newbie, but I use the search command when I help someone find a channel they're looking for, if I am unable to, or anyone else, is unable to help them in the current channel. -Mike Empus@IRC -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Py Fivestones Sent: Monday, April 15, 2002 6:14 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Coder-Com] X search feature Hi, Is it possible to add parameters to the /msg x search feature? As it is now, X will not output more than 10 hits. This limit makes the feature self defeating in a way because newbies are the most likely ones to use the channel search. I tried /msg x search help, and also search undernet, as a newbie is likely to do, and the 10 hit limit yielded few "good" hits. Could we add something like /msg x search blah 3 to find channels matching blah with at least 3 users on the channels? That would be a good way to get around the output limit. Or perhaps only return channels with more then 2 people on it (X+3 users). stoney` Py Fivestones [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[Coder-Com] X bug or feature?
Scenario: X is parted from a channel (/msg x part ) A user joins that channel, who matches X's banlist for the channel X rejoins the channel (/msg x join ) nothing happens. the user is still there. Does X not ban these users when it rejoins (ie. reads the channel banlist), on purpose? Is this a feature? If so, what is the reasoning behind it? I would like to see X read it's banlist, and act accordingly, if there are users in the channel when it rejoins, who match bans in the banlist. Only just noticed it, trying to figure out, if it is a *feature* or a *bug*, as I was aparrantly confused over this feature/bug issue the last time I posted something to do with X here. *laugh* Best Regards, -Mike Empus@IRC

[Coder-com] IPv6
Hi Guys, Do we have anyone out there able and interested to introduce IPv6 to gnuworld? I understand it to be a big^H^H^Hhorrible task, but it would be really good to make a start. Users ask about it quite often and we're falling behind in this area. Eventually, we'll be denying access to the people we want to serve. Any takers? :> - Empus ___ Coder-com mailing list Coder-com@undernet.org http://undernet.sbg.org/mailman/listinfo/coder-com
Re: [Coder-com] Greetings
I've a huge fan of all things electronic security (working in this space for a living) but personally, I see little benefit in SSL for IRC, because of the very architecture model. Unless you're speaking with another client on the same server, or all people in a channel you're on is on the same server, you'd end up with a false sense of security. Without guaranteeing that ALL client<->server connections are encrypted, and any server<->server connections in between are as well, you could never be sure that the end to end path is encrypted and thus MIM attacks are mitigated. So without that scenario, wouldn't the client be fooled into a false sense of security? /2 cents - Empus On Tue, Oct 30, 2012 at 9:53 AM, Panesar, Amrit wrote: > Greetings ircu developers, > > After much searching yet to no avail, I have been unable to find a > patch or even a discussion for SSL support in ircu > > What particular hurdles stand in the way? > ___ > Coder-com mailing list > Coder-com@undernet.org > http://undernet.sbg.org/mailman/listinfo/coder-com > ___ Coder-com mailing list Coder-com@undernet.org http://undernet.sbg.org/mailman/listinfo/coder-com
Re: [Coder-com] Greetings
I think you're missing my point. Let's say you're ClientA, connected over SSL to ServerA. I'm ClientB, connected insecurely (ie. no SSL) to ServerB. ServerA is connected to ServerB, unencrypted. You established a connection with your server over SSL, so you think your session is secure, and that chat conversations will be protected from man in the middle attacks because of encryption. However, if you chat with me, the ServerA<->ServerB connection, and also the ServerB<->ClientB side of the connection, is all insecure. You think your SSL provides security on our conversation, but in reality, it wouldn't. It only protects the ClientA<->ServerA side of things. One could argue that some security is better than none, but I think it's a dangerous illusion of sorts. Again, these are just my thoughts but it's something I've considered before and I think it's a valid reason to be wary of IRC over SSL. - Empus On Tue, Oct 30, 2012 at 1:35 PM, Noel Butler wrote: > ** > On Tue, 2012-10-30 at 12:36 +1000, Empus wrote: > > I've a huge fan of all things electronic security (working in this space > for a living) but personally, I see little benefit in SSL for IRC, > because of the very architecture model. > > > > Unless you're speaking with another client on the same server, or all > people in a channel you're on is on the same server, you'd end up with a > false sense of security. > > > > Without guaranteeing that ALL client<->server connections are encrypted, > and any server<->server connections in between are as well, you could never > be sure that the end to end path is encrypted and thus MIM attacks are > mitigated. > > > > So without that scenario, wouldn't the client be fooled into a false > sense of security? > > > > I'd say yes, to large networked servers like Undernet [image: ;)] but SSL > would be a great advantage, in particular for stand alone's or small > networks where agreements mandate ssl only. > > Think.. > > Port { server = yes; port = 4400; }; > ... > Port { port = 6667; }; > Port { port = ; ssl = yes; }; > > anyone connects to 6667, only ssl are accepted on , commenting out > the port 6667 Port entry, would mean server only accepts connections on > port , that are SSL, plain connections on should be rejected. > > Cheers > > > > ___ > Coder-com mailing list > Coder-com@undernet.org > http://undernet.sbg.org/mailman/listinfo/coder-com > > ___ Coder-com mailing list Coder-com@undernet.org http://undernet.sbg.org/mailman/listinfo/coder-com
