On the other hand, I would assert that we commons-dev folks (including
me ... I +1'd this too) screwed up when we encouraged the
commons-httpclient developers to go form their own list to reduce the
traffic on commons-dev. Fortunately for httpclient that wasn't fatal
to their community development efforts, but it illustrates one of the
intangible benefits of all the Commons projects sharing a common dev
and user list ... a primary resource for adding new interested parties
is people seeing messages for projects that they weren't originally
interested in, but a comment or two piqued their interest.

Put another way, a big part of the Apache culture is meritocracy --
and the ability of an individual to figure out how to use mail filters
to ignore dev list stuff they don't care about is a useful indicator
of cluefulness :-).

Yes, that is probably the best idea. "if subject contains

Still does not help on the unclassified issue mails though.

That is a point. The volume of the dev-list might actually make people

I think it's currently stable enough for a 1.0 release and that
neither of those bugs is a showstopper.

Since VFS is in the sandbox, doesn't it need promoting first??

[VFS][POLL] Get VFS out of sandbox now?

2005-05-10 Thread Mario Ivankovits
Hi!
Due to some user requests I would like to know if you think its possible
to get VFS out of the sandbox.

I think the main reason for the requests is to have releases and thus a
stable api between the x.0 releases.
Also it might be easier for me to implement changes as I am not forced
to provide a working nightly build.
Currently its a game of luck when picking up a nightly build for a
production system.

Currently there are 2 enhancements and 2 bugs filed in bugzilla
Bugs:
http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=34592
http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=34499
Even if not fixed they sholdnt be a show stopper for release 1.0
Yesterday I started to document how the setup of a VFS testserver (for
development). Yes, ... no joke. I think it will be finished end of week.
After this the documentation should be sufficient.

Plan for the future (not ordered by importance)
*) Implement a memory filesystem. Maybe based on
http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=33795
*) rework the caching model to allow VFS to run without any cache at all.
*) extended ant tasks
If there is consent I can start a voting.
Thanks!

Here is what i am testing now. I am happy to refactor before committing.

First, I extracted the interface as described above, added a
constructor to RandomDataImpl taking a RandomGenerator and modified
the methods that use a Random instance to use a RandomGenerator
instead. I implemented this, adding a JDKRandomGenerator that just
extends Random to implement the interface. All current tests run and
this should be a backward compatible change.

Then I created an AbstractRandomGenerator with abstract methods seed
and nextDouble and default implementations of the other methods based
on nextDouble(). The value of this approach is that it provides a
generic way to replace java.util.Random, given a PRNG that can
generate uniform deviates. The RngPack generators can then all be
easily plugged in by just delegating nextDouble() to their raw()
methods.

I suppose that I could remove the "derived methods" from the interface
and have the JDKRandomGenerator derive from the
AbstractRandomGenerator class and wrap, rather than extend Random.
But then pluggability in RandomDataImpl would require inheritance and
it seemed simpler and more flexible to me to use an interface.
Alternatively, we could also define a base interface that is extended
by the Random-style interface, or multiple of these for the different
types you mention (including byte-generation, which we need). I would
be fine with adding these if this is what you mean above.

An interesting question is which of the methods that you mention above
should be the "base" used in the abstract base class(es). I think the
JDK is int-based, while RngPack appears to be uniform-based. The most
flexible setup might be to implement abstract classes based on each of
the three. Implementations are tricky, though.

Let me know what you think. Unless there are objections, once I
complete testing and docs, I will commit things as described above
(probably not until this weekend). As I said, I am happy to refactor.
The only thing that I want to make sure of is that the changes are
backward compatible.

Phil

Ok, I've looked into cases 17 and 21. The problem is that they are
simply invalid scenarios - ones that should never happen in real life.
So I'm not too worried about this.

Actually, I think *all* the scenarios that involve:
 * caller in child
 * AND child-first is true for child classloader
 * AND context classloader not set
are invalid. That doesn't make any sense to me.

However even with this setup, the test still works unless:
 * logging adapter class is in parent (ie commons-logging.jar)
 * AND log class is in child (ie api or logging jar)

In the bad scenarios, child caller code loads LogFactory,
LogFactoryImpl, Log from the child classloader. Then LogFactoryImpl
loads the adapter from the contextClassLoader - which is the parent. The
adapter binds to Log via the parent too, with the result that the
logadapter implements [EMAIL PROTECTED] not [EMAIL PROTECTED], so the cast
fails.

So I intend to ignore cases 17 and 21. Of course if we end up with a
solution to the general problem that fixes these too, that's a bonus.

Cheers,

Simon

I would prefer to separate out these generation methods into different
types. IMO, the RandomGenerator interface should contain a sole generation
method. One of:
int next(int numberOfBits) // similar to the java.util.Random method
int next() // discrete uniform over [0, Integer.MAX_VALUE]
  double next() // uniform over [0, 1)

The remaining methods I would implement as specialized random variable
generators that use a RandomGenerator instance as an engine.

The "0.3 release candidate" posted by Rory at
  http://people.apache.org/~rwinston/commons-discovery-0.3.jar
appears to have been built from the SVN HEAD.

It's only a release candidate; the vote to approve it has not yet
completed.

Jakarta-commons now uses subversion (not cvs) as its version control
system. You can get the latest code by:
  svn co
http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/jakarta/commons/proper
 /discovery/trunk/
(the url is all one string)

You should be able to build it with the command:
  maven jar
or maybe
  ant jar

NB: Rory, I would personally suggest creating a tag by doing
  svn cp trunk tags/DISCOVERY_03_RC1
then building the release from that RC directory. After all, svn
tags/branches are very cheap. And I would also recommend calling the
resulting jar "commons-discovery-0.3-RC1.jar" until the vote passes. The
situation now is that there is a jar called commons-discovery-0.3.jar
floating around that may or may not be the same as the finally approved
jar of that name, and the jar may or may not be the same as the code in
SVN trunk; all potentially confusing. Note that this is just my personal
opinion..

Simon

Summary: [commons-daemon]: jsvc should instantiate server only
once
   Product: Commons
   Version: 1.0 Final
  Platform: Other
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
  Severity: major
  Priority: P2
 Component: Daemon
AssignedTo: commons-dev@jakarta.apache.org
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Configuration:

Red Hat Linux 9
j2sdk-1_4_2_07
jsvc 1.0

Expected behavior:

jsvc should call the constructor of the java class implementing the Daemon
interface only once.

Actual behavior:

jsvc calls the constructor 2 times.

Notes:

It may well be justifiable to instantiate the class more than once from the jsvc
programmer's point of view.

However this is in conflict with the requirements of a Java demon/service.

The double successive instantiation of the same Java server can create severe
resource problems.

There is no guarantee that these problems are not created because there is no
convention that documents this double instantiation.

Apart from possible resource contention issues, there is a more undisputable
obvious problem:

Performance.

The instantiation of a server is typically a time consuming process.

The server startup time has to be kept at a minimum to minimise service
disruptions due to re-starts.

In this context it is extremely hard to accept if not unaceptable that this task
is performed more than once.

Perhaps what's needed then is a separate commons-dev list and then
individual commons-users lists?

I suspect some of the less active lists may be so primarily because few
people care about those projects enough to wade through all the projects
they don't care about. Having separate lists might help the smaller
communities to grow a bit.

Indeed, it seems that your site is missing some information (the pkg

Gary,

Offhand I haven't a clue. I'll have to poke around and see if I can
figure it out. The docs at
http://people.apache.org/~stevencaswell/commons-lang-2.1/docs/apidocs/
came from maven site:generate with Maven 1.0.2, so I'm a bit confused as
to why you get a different result.

A couple of questions. What is the JDK you are running the maven
against? and what op sys are you running it on. Not sure if either have
any affect, but it might be a place to start looking. My JDK is 1.4.2_08
and my op sys is Windows XP.

RC5 is available at

The significant change is the exclusion of the o.c.l.text package and
associated javadocs, clover results, jdiff, clirr. I also found and
corrected the maven xdoc problem that caused the extra space between
anchors
and punctuation.

Hopefully we are ready to go with this one, so here is the vote:

Well, the current setup is very deliberate. Commons is meant to be a
single community, with many shared conventions and tools.

Often I have struck a problem, and been given advice from committers on
quite different projects.

And quite often a commons project has only 1 or 2 regular committers. If
it were on its own list, then there's no oversight of that project by
the general commons community. A project could die and rot without
anyone noticing.

Every email is supposed to contain the name of the subproject in
square-brackets, eg
[foo] why did the chicken cross the road?
so that filtering is reasonably easy to do.

Getting messages that aren't associated with a particular project could
be done by simply filtering *out* the projects you aren't interested in
rather than filtering *in* the ones you are. Ok, there are about 50
projects so that's a moderately long filter, but only a couple of
projects are added per year so keeping such a filter up-to-date isn't
that hard.

Yes, the filtering approach is a nuisance for people on low-bandwidth,
as the entire set of mails gets downloaded then most discarded - at
least with my email client. Presumably as the filter criteria is on the
subject, and email headers can be downloaded without bodies, it's
possible to filter mail without downloading it. I don't know how one
would set that up, though.

Note that many "generic" emails go to general@jakarta.apache.org rather
than [EMAIL PROTECTED]

So in summary, I'm definitely against *replacing* the existing commons
shared list with separate lists. Perhaps some "gateway" could be set up
where the filtering rules split stuff up into multiple lists, so people
could subscribe to separate lists if they really want to. Posts to those
lists would be forwarded to the commons-dev list, with the subject line
auto-updated to include the project name. Sounds doable, but a fair bit
of work to set up. Apache's infrastructure team are already overloaded,
so I don't see them being willing/available to tackle this anytime soon
though. Of course this setup doesn't have to be hosted at apache!

Cheers,

Simon

Re: [PATCH] [EMAIL] Checkstyle errors cleaned up

2005-05-10 Thread Matt Benson
I just joined the list myself... (for sandbox
commons-pgp) but I noticed that in the non-checkstyle
changes from this patch, the signature of a public
method is modified in at least one place. This will
break already-compiled code running against the
library. Over in Ant-land we consider that bad; I can
only assume the same would be true in Jakarta commons.

Eric,

Firstly, welcome... Secondly... thanks.

There are two things that would like to suggest with your patch.

First:
Please try to break this patch down into discrete sections. i.e. one
patch for formatting and one for each of the other changes.

Second:
Please submit your patch(es) to the bugzilla as files. This allows
use to keep everything in one place.

Again, welcome and thanks.

Take a look at the hibernate forum. This is really high traffic.
If it was not for all the commits and bug/issue mails there would be
no problem. But for those, it's often a lot harder to tell whether
this is interesting for you without opening the e-mail (especially
since my mail client insists on truncating the subject after "svn

In fact sometimes I dive into those mails to learn.
Why not create a e-mail filter to get only those mails you are

I planned to, but haven't decided what to filter on.
I my case I filter on "vfs" in the subject, but I admit this is not
always possible. And ok, I have no problems with commit and bug mails as
especially the bug mails sometime also contains discussions like a

Rory, could we change the release notes slightly for 1.4.0? I think
your description of the date format changes doesn't really give the
flavor of what's involved here. This bit from the FTPClientConfig
javadoc is a fuller description:

Use cases: You are trying to access a server that
* lists files with timestamps that use month names in languages
other than English
* lists files with timestamps that use date formats other than the
American English "standard" MM dd
* is in different timezone and you need accurate timestamps for
dependency checking as in Ant

and I would now add a fourth
* supports the new all-numeric date formats now being used on the
ftp servers distributed with some newer Linux distributions.
(That fourth one was really a defect that was never logged as such but
communicated on the list about a month ago).

On the basis of your experience with enterprise-dt, I am marking this bug
"INVALID". We are moving to a new release soon and don't want this holding it
up. If you have a change of heart, you can always reopen it or write a new bug.

Without seeing your code, it is hard to tell what the problem is. I don't know
what your facade does but you might want to look there. Try it without a facade
and see if the problems go away. You mention threads sleeping. Is this a
multithreaded app? That could be part of the problem. These are just guesses,
the best I can do from this distance.

We have written code to do some of that for JAMES using BouncyCastle, so I
think we'd be interested in seeing a Commons API, and making sure that it
supports our needs, too.

I feel very comfortable with how it is currently.
I do have an easy overlook whats new in other projects, the traffic is

This is true for commons-dev, maybe for commons-user it might be a

Why not create a e-mail filter to get only those mails you are

back to life :)

i have done the same test with the enterprise-dt api. the result is very
similar. so it may not be a bug at all.

where the problem comes from is still unclear.

at the moment the PWD command blocks all further communications. sending a
message from ftp server to client lets the client go on. last week the CWD
command caused this (no source changes since then)
i also tried passive and active connections (no change)
also turned off the windows firewall. (no change)

and still. sometimes its working.
it might just be a problem that i connect to my own machine (192.168..)

well i dont know :-/

[PGP] New Sandbox component

2005-05-10 Thread Stefan Bodewig
Hi,

members of the Maven, Ant and Repository teams have been thinking
about adding PGP support to their respective projects for a while, but
so far neither of those projects has made any real attempt to do so.

Some discussion on the Ant dev list that involved Ant and Maven
committers lead to the idea of commons-pgp.

The goal is a library that provides a simple API to PGP sign files (or
streams?) and verify PGP signatures. This may be extended to key
management or encryption/decryption later. The idea is to start with
an implementation based on Bouncycastle's[1] library but keep the API
independent of it in order to allow different providers like
cryptix[2] to be written.

The library itself is supposed to be independent of either Ant or
Maven.

The initial set of committers will be Brett Porter, Matte Benson (who
is an Ant committer, I've just granted him commit access to the
sandbox) and myself, but more helping hands are certainly welcome.

So far all there is is a README file describing the purpose of the
component. We probably should have an API sketch before we go further
than that. Somebody with commons karma will have to add pgp to the
externals of trunks-sandox at one point.

Based on the projects involved the question probably won't be whether
we use Maven or Ant to build the project, we'll support both. 8-)

Cheers

Stefan

Registering the Converters with my preferred default (null) was really trivial,
and now I have 2 more tests passing :-)
There's no need of additional CallMethodRule parameters; just correct the
javadoc, maybe adding a brief reference to this discussion (if you want nulls,
register an appropriate Converter).

Thanks again.

Sure ! I didn't dive deep inside the code, so I will follow your advice and try
to extend AbstractFileObject ; anyway, as the object passed to the method is a
FileObject, you might add to it the method findFiles() to avoid this cast.

It would be convenient to have a web page about design guidelines.

Thanks for your help.
