Can only confirm this - but last time I managed to get in touch (around
august ) there wasn't a public repository as the SW was still too much in a
flux.

Presumably sending patches is fine - I find myself in the same situation:
the diff is becoming larger and larger, but the time and effort necessary to
port it to the next release just doesn't seem worth cleaning it up
appropriately sometimes :-(

Hi!

I've also requested a public code repository from Marcus some months
ago to allow the community to help in the development, he said that it
all will come later: svn/git/bzr repository, mailing list and so on
(ps: there is a foss-gps mailing list at
http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/FOSS-GPS that's a good place to discuss the
development of foss-gps software, for example tangogps, you're all
welcome to join!! There are some really skillful people who work with
GPS software full time and really can give you some valuable tips!).
He said that the best way to help is to spread the word and send
patches.

You also might want to contact this guy:
http://projects.openmoko.org/users/gecco/ who works on this project:
http://projects.openmoko.org/projects/gtkaddpoi/ - you both are
working on Tangogps so co-operation would not be bad!

A word more about foss-gps: the idea behind it is to try to connect
foss-gps-software (&hardware) developers and share ideas. Also it's a
place for smaller projects, like tangogps, who don't have their own
mailing lists, can discuss the development and also manage support
issues. So all tangogps users, you're welcome to join there! For more
information, check

I sent Marcus an email on Monday and have not heard back, so figured he must
be busy or on holiday.. or have a spam filter that does not like me :). So
was just wondering if anyone here happened to know of a repository for it.

I'll just start with the bit I want to look at against 0.9.3. Looking at
making it so it can be configured to downloaded updated map tiles if the ones
it has are out of date, and checking that with a combination of time stamp

Hello,

I don't know about the git / svn repository; but may I put something on
your bugfix list :-)

while porting tangoGPS 0.9.3 to FreeBSD 7.0R and using it against the
gpsd on my FR I encountered that the IP addr (and port) of the gpsd is
hardcoded to 127.0.0.1 (in src/main.c); tangoGPS should respect what the
user before has configured as host for the gpsd; it does know it from
the gconf config file but you have to go to the config-tab in tangoGPS
and press there the button to make use of this IP addr;

Thx

btw: this is really cool GPS when you traveling around with your Linux
or FreeBSD based laptop (for example with the small eeePC 900) and
having the FR as your GPS device, but the maps of tangoGPS on your bigger
laptop screen!

The console? Maybe this would be a prime choice for plugging in a lirc

be used for this right? I'm thinking the console is like my console

[om2008-testing] illume-config-illume + illume-theme-illume + illume

2008-11-06 Thread Sarton O'Brien
Hey all,

Been out of the loop for a few weeks and decided to see if testing was working
again.

After updating I had the icons issue and used the combination of:

illume-config-illume + illume-theme-illume + illume

Which seems to be working except that when prompted to enter my pin I get the
SEGV error popup. It seems to coincide with the keyboard popping up but that
may be coincidence.

At one point I saw this on the console:

enlightenment: malloc(): memory corruption

I don't have the entire message but it's probably unimportant.

Everything else seems fine, it's just when prompted for my pin.

Any ideas?

Well colour me impressed. I've had a play with android on the Freerunner and
(no disrespect to the openmoko guys) it's renewed my faith that the device
will some day be useable as a phone.

Managed to get it running, import contacts from the SIM and make calls, with
acceptable volume and none of the echo that the OM distros suffered from.

There's a lot that's not working (receive calls for instance) but this looks
really good guys. Kudos and thanks.

Hi Angus!

After two hours of fiddling with Python (don't ask) it finally works
with [2]! Thank you very much!!!

So, your guess was right - Qt Extended doesn't yet route the Audio
properly. Just a note for everyone wanting to try this: Modify Angus'
script, to comment out the passkey connection if you have already paired
with QT Extended.

This is for Lorn from the QT team - is there any setting in a config
file to tell QT extended which alsa device to use for the bluetooth
handset? Does it work that way?

Cheers,
Benedikt

With Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 I've had 100% success on four or five different
systems with:

auto usb0
iface usb0 inet static
address 192.168.0.201
netmask 255.255.255.252
post-up iptables -A POSTROUTING -t nat -j MASQUERADE -s 192.168.0.202
post-up iptables -I PREROUTING -i usb0 -p udp --dport 53 -j DNAT --to
192.168.0.254
post-up echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
post-up iptables -P FORWARD ACCEPT
pre-down iptables -D POSTROUTING -t nat -j MASQUERADE -s 192.168.0.202
pre-down iptables -D PREROUTING -i usb0 -p udp --dport 53 -j DNAT --to
192.168.0.254

in /etc/network/interfaces, and the fix noted on the wiki at
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Usb_networking#Ubuntu_Issues

NOTES: I use 192.168.0.201 on host and 192.168.0.202 on FR, with netmask of
/30 or 255.255.255.252 - to match 'standard' {dumb as I feel it is}
FreeRunner network setup, use 192.168.0.200 on host with 255.255.255.0 as
netmask. Also, 192.168.0.254 is my local DNS server, hence the DNAT rule
forwarding DNS requests there (which I don't actually need anymore since I
use local dnscache on the FR). In fact, none of the post-up and pre-down
parts affect me anymore as I utilize a static permanent ruleset to
accomplish this, so I leave them all commented out.

(and yes, 'auto' DOES work, provided the fix linked above is employed, and
works without it some times)

[QtExtended] Bluetooth car handsfree in 4.4.2

2008-11-06 Thread Benedikt Bär
Hi list,

I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out the last missing
pieces of a puzzle :)

I'm trying to use my bluetooth car handsfree under QT Extended, and so
far made good progress.

Using the 2.6 kernel from the android download, the rfcomm bug in the
bluetooth driver seems to be solved.

With this kernel, I am able to pair, and 100% of the features of the car
handsfree do work, e. g. an incoming call is registered and I am able to
answer, outgoing calls made through booth Qtopia Dialer and the handset
work, etc...

But the problem is I get no sound - at no end of the call.

So I saw from the Qtopia logs that the state file was missing, and I
downloaded one from this [1] page, confirmed to work.

Now I get static noise in the headset, which I suppose is a good thing
(tm) :), but still no sound. In a call, I've tried to change alsamixer,
but to no avail.

That leads me to suspect that it's not an alsa problem at all. I instead
think that Qtopia is not routing the audio properly.

So my question is: How does Qtopia handle audio via bluetooth, is it
like described in [1]? Do I need some alsa/bluez tweaking (not state
files) here? Has anyone tried this yet?

I strongly believe this can work and that I am on the right path. It
seems it's just something silly I'm missing :(

Cheers,
-
Benedikt

Thanks for that, I'll play with it today.

Does QT 4.4.2 not use the AT command that was recently discovered to activate
the echo canceller / noise reduction feature of calypso ?

Maybe it's must a matter of taste. I found icewm adequately usable so

Yeap, and that's the beauty of the open phone. If you do not have something
out of the box, something you really need, you always can DIY. On the other

RE: USB Networking

2008-11-06 Thread Matthias Camenzind
I had also some problems with the Usb networking with ubuntu 8.04. But i could
solve it with this: ifconfig usb0 192.168.0.200 netmask 255.255.255.0
I had to enter it every time after i connected FR with my Computer or I
rebooted the FR. But it worked fine. I found this solution in the Getting
Started Guide for Neo 1973.
Today network is automatically set up after connecting but today I don't know

Thank you very much! I just flashed it onto my FR. But when I test-called
it, it rang (I _really_ have to change that sound ;-) ) and didn't stop
when I hang up on the other side (without picking up on the FR). Means the
other phone was idle again but the FR kept on rinning for several seconds
(10? 20?). And it finished it by crashing *g*. QtE went away and only a

Hi,

Are you using the latest version of NeoTool? v1.1 and up should be able
to detect and handle this situation by presenting you with a screen
asking you which dfu-capable device you want to flash.

If you are using the latest version, please run 'dfu-util -l' and post

you did upgrade your debian, did you?
gizmo posted only a few days ago about the caveats of upgrades because of
changes in frameworkd packages!

cite:

Now a more detailed story: because of the changes above, any upgrade
From previous versions requires manual intervention. This is caused by
the fact that the fso-frameworkd binary package does not install anymore
the general configuration file (/etc/frameworkd.conf), which is needed
for frameworkd to start. However, to allow the fso-frameworkd package
installation, the fso-frameworkd init script does not produce any error
if it does not find /etc/frameworkd.conf. Instead, it tells the user to
check the /usr/share/doc/fso-frameworkd/README.Debian file (attached at
the end of this mail as well).

NeoTool/dfu-util bug - No such Alternate Setting: "rootfs"

2008-11-06 Thread Mikko Ohtamaa
Symptoms dfu-util/Neotool fails to flash Openmoko when using wiki.openmoko.org
instructions:

sudo ./dfu-util.1 -a rootfs -R -D Fat_and_Dirty_OM.200809_20081023.rootfs.jffs2
dfu-util - (C) 2007 by OpenMoko Inc.
This program is Free Software and has ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY

Opening USB Device 0x:0x...
Claiming USB DFU Runtime Interface...
Determining device status: state = dfuIDLE, status = 0
WARNING: Runtime device already in DFU state ?!?
No such Alternate Setting: "rootfs"

Cause:

Neotool/dfu-util automatically picks wrong USB device - it must pick this one

Found DFU Runtime: [0x1457:0x5119] devnum=0, cfg=0, intf=2, alt=0, name="USB

In my case, the wrong device was something built into my laptop:

Bus 005 Device 003: ID 03f0:181d Hewlett-Packard

Workaround:

Use dfu-util -d parameter to specify device id manually.

Re: A new open source hardware: TV-B-Gone

2008-11-06 Thread Jeff Sadowski
Does the free runner have ir transmitters? If so you can probably use
lirc to do all that you need. There should be a lirc driver for the
device. If not you would need to add some kind of hardware anyways.
The usb device i had pointed to can get extra stuff into lirc with its
ir recievers like other comands you may wish to get off of a remote.
If you need to add hardware really take a look at the lirc page they
have page after page of different ways to hook up ir devices and
configuration pages for lots of common remotes. You can build a serial
attached device for real cheap embed the stuff in your phone as you
desire.

That is hardly viable solution. For data transmission to some IR device
maybe but not as remote. You can stick into FR all sorts of USB goodies. The
point is to take FR out of your pocket and start clicking as soon as
corresponding app is started. If you need any extra step it defeats the
purpose. You may simply buy some ugly universal remote control for about the
same price (not FR price of course ;).

Re: [QT Extended] Observersation on QtE 4.4.2 / found problems

2008-11-06 Thread Marcel Meyer
Hi list,

(sorry, if the information in this mail comes doubled - I sent it first
using a wrong sender email address. In case it is unlocked by some admin:
apologies :-) )

I'd like to use this thread to add some problems I found so far. I won't
repeat the ones I encountered which were already reported by others.

But let me start with some plaudit (and here I allow myself to repeat the
positive statements from others)!

* The battery life is sooo much better. Standby for almost 2 days is now
possible. That looks like the right way to go!

* GPRS is now (most of the time ;-) ) working! I can - albeit slow - now
surf on my Freerunner.

* Sending SMS and calling seems to work. (Problems mentioned by other apply
to me too (Echo, no ring tone, etc.) )

So thank you Trolls! (Always complaining without saying thank you is not
very diplomatic, I think, right? *g* )

Now, let me outline my "new" problems.

* I'm not sure, if it was mentioned somewhere on the list. Just for
completeness: the echo-problem applies to me. The other end hears its own
voice.

* QtExtended (using the mw-kernel incl. modules) insists that I do not have
a SIM card... "System Info", the application "SIM applications" and even
the settings when I try to change my "Call Options" moan about a missing
one. (I have an obviously working O2-3G-card from Germany.)

When I choose a contact out of the dialer application, some kind of text box
pops up with the title "Phone Number" and the word "No" as single content.
Only a non-functional "Cancel" in the button bar. The dialer then hangs, I
can't do anything more in it. Pressing the AUX button brings me back to the
home screen and the dialer app crashes (?) so I can restart.

Dialing manually works! Also choosing a contact wihtin the address book and
then selecting "Call" is a way to call out. At least it should be pulled
through! (I'm happy that it isn't in this case.) ;-)

* The most severe problem is not sth. as easily reproducible. I switched on
my GPRS yesterday evening and choose "Always On" and "No Timeout" to let it
be online over night. I want to have some XMPP-client to be always online
on the phone some day.

When starting the browser this morning, I switched with the AUX button to
look after some notes I added into the notes application. The browser
seemed to kill itself (which looks like the default reaction of
applications when I press AUX :-p ).

Now, the browser doesn't want to start anymore. It always complains about
some internal error and closes itself (well, perhaps this is just a
QtE-dialog telling me the called app segfaulted? Dunno). So I wanted to
reboot to cleanse the memory.

The problem now is that QtE behaves strange. The battery indicator is
showing that the battery is beeing loaded. Which it isn't of course. And
despite the homescreen there is a text box overlayed with the instruction
to enter my PIN and unlock it. The "Unlock" button is visible but
non-functional. But that's it. There is _no_ input widget to enter my pin.
Just the homescreen with the overlayed text box. Nothing reacts to any
input despite pressing the power button for 8+ seconds. (Taking out the
battery and waiting a few seconds didn't change anything.)

I can still ssh into the FR in this state if I connect the USB cable. CPU is
bored (load under 0.1) so at least there is nothing running amok.

Phew, sorry for that long post. But I hope the long descriptions make it
easier to understand what I want to describe in my clumsy english. ;-)

Have a nice day,
Marcel

I ran into the same issue with the newer image so I'll have to go dig through
the archives to find that (only been on this list a short time, though I've had
the phone since September), thanks for the pointer!

Anyone have a link handy ?

I use the rootfs image posted by Hypnotize along with the mwester kernel (and
modules).

I use the gsmhandset.state file that was posted here some time ago. With this
combination, I have a usable phone and calls are taken with the handset and
not speaker (as used to be the case with the 4.4.1 release).

I've just tested that and it is indeed the case.

When I get an incoming call the phone is set to speaker phone not handset!

I'm going to try the new image with the ringtones on it in case that makes any

Hmm, that seemed to work happily for me, there was quite a noticeble difference
between the two modes.

In fact *incoming* calls sound like they're using the external speaker by
default (and hence get lots of feedback), in contrast to outgoing ones that
sound just great.

I installed XGlamo and tried doom but the behaviour is the same. Now i
can rotate the screen and change the resolution so the doom menu looks
better. But it hangs at the same point and i can only kill the application.
So i think the problem isn't the video mode and maybe it freeze because
of the sound not working?

As I mentioned in the "Funambol" threat, there is already a tool which
can synchronise via SyncML, but it was written for Qtopia-4.3.1 so
someone might have to look at it ..

Wait, here is the text of the older post:

I guess this is an open secret already, but just in case someone wants
to have a synchronisation solution which uses SyncML:

Ah, I thought someone already said it didn't work.
I'll be happy to give it a try tonight.

I've never really compiled anything for my freerunner yet.
Is this just a small program I need to compile, or is there more to it?

Re: USB Networking

2008-11-06 Thread Denis Johnson
I have had this setting for months it does not work for me.

Whenever I want to connect my FR, I must first plug it in into the usb
and then run the following script which someone once posted here or on
the #openmoko irc. Until I run ths script I cannot ping and hence ssh
into the FR. Unfortunately I don't know enough to integrate and
automate what the script does into my interfaces file. If someone can
shed some more light, it would be appreciated:

--
#!/bin/sh
# Enables Hostside USB-Networking for neo
ifconfig usb0 down
ifconfig usb0 192.168.0.200 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
iptables -A POSTROUTING -t nat -j MASQUERADE -s 192.168.0.0/24
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
iptables -P FORWARD ACCEPT
route add -host 192.168.0.202 gw 192.168.0.200
route -n | grep -e "Destination" -e "usb0"
--

the information presented by the tooltips depends on the information
provied by the frameworkd(we don't share every info at this time). i
think after redesigning the software, we are now able to provide more
features(information).

i think making the button behavior configurable should do the trick. so
everyone can decide which program should handle the button.
