[CGUYS] Parallel-Windows Which OS Question

2007-07-26 Thread Michael Moser

All-
I have an Intel Mac and have Parallels.
I will be installing Virus Barrier which covers both sides of the
computer.
The purpose for going to the dark side is that I have to connect to a
Windows XP Pro computer through remote desktop and control a device
remotely which it controls.
Which windows operating system do I need on my Intel mac to access
this computer? Windows XP Pro?Vista Pro? XP Home? Vista Home?

Which os would be the least hassle, the safest, and the cheapest to
get this done?
I know the answer may not be the same for all those parameters, but I
would like the least hassle and easiest maintenance and interface.

Thanks
Michael Moser

2007-07-26 Thread Rev. Stewart Marshall

You will get no argument from me.

It is just like Tom's posting about manipulating the stock market.

There was no manipulation intended.

Apple stated how they accounted for the sales (270,000) and ATT
stated how they accounted for the sales (146,000). Apple counted all
it had shipped, and ATT counted all it had sold, not including any on
order or in transit (I leave that for a discussion on accounting
rules and how they are used.), plus there is the fudge factor of
those who bought phones but did not activate as they were trying to
reap a profit in the after market.

[CGUYS] Firefox f-up

2007-07-26 Thread Harvey Simon
Partial progress: I used the command line Tom provided, below. A firefox
options box opened and I selected -- I forgot to write this down but I think
it was Restore Toolbars, or something along those lines.

If I then chose the option to continue in safe mode, Firefox opened and both
of my problems were solved (no bookmarks in the sidebar and empty space at
the bottom of the window).

If I chose the option to make changes and restart (same changes), only one
of the two problems was solved (bookmarks).

I closed Terminal (which closed Firefox) and restarted the browser the
normal way. Now I have my sidebar bookmarks back. But I still have that
blank space at the bottom of the browser window. (I also still have the
Google Toolbar I installed.)

I'm halfway there. Any help on fixing the remaining problem (bottom white
space) would be appreciated very much.

Thanks.

There is no room for virgins in Unixland.

Firefox.exe -safe-mode

It is traditional in Unixland to provide only the barest hint of the
correct syntax. I think most Unixheads would be mightily offended if the
proffered solution did not require at least some reinterpretation work
correctly. So at the risk of being mightily offensive, here is the full
command for OS X. Note that this assumes that you have not renamed your
copy of Firefox. Of course, most Unixheads would rename Firefox to at
least include the version number so that they could keep mutiple copies
around.

/Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox -safe-mode

Now we have to discuss why you are running the bash shell when everyone
knows that bash is not the best shell.

When an LCD is not at its native screen resolution it is not sharp.
They are tuned for a specific resolution.

CRT's are unbelievably sharp!

LCD's are sharp I have an LCD TV.

But do not forget CRT's are not just TV's they are much sharper and
have a better resolution than TV's.

Re: [CGUYS] Google Bookmarks

2007-07-26 Thread Jordman
I did install the Firefox Google Bookmarks add-on and used the Import
Firefox Bookmarks option and saw a variety of strange behaviors from
Firefox afterward. It was unresponsive to clicking on other tabs and
then refused to shut down. After a couple force quits, it seems to have
settled down. I suppose I could remove it now that I have moved my
bookmarks, but I'll wait 'til it screws up some more.

This is on an iMac in case it matters.
In the interest of simplicity and reliability, unless I'm specifically
experimenting with something, I generally keep add-ons to a minimum and
I don't use Google toolbar.

Harvey Simon wrote:

Stay away from Gmarks. I had trouble with it. For one thing, Firefox
insisted on staying front and center on my screen when I selected another
active program. I uninstalled Gmarks and that problem went away.

In the Google toolbar there's a drop down menu under Bookmarks that says
Import Firefox Bookmarks.

I wish I'd seen that before I installed Gmarks, which I think could also be
to blame for the problems I detailed in the Firefox f-up thread.

That OS would be OS X.

Remote Desktop is no reason for going to the the dark side. Microsoft
Office for the Mac comes with Remote Desktop Client, or it is a *free*
download from http://www.microsoft.com/mac/. I used it only once
with no problems that I can remember, so I am not fully qualified
to endorse it, but it is certainly worth a try as it is much less
trouble

than installing an entire second OS. Here's the product description
from MS:

Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac allows you to connect to a
Windows-based computer and work with programs and files on that
computer from your Macintosh computer. To connect to a Windows-
based computer, you need network access and permissions to connect
to the computer, and the computer must be running Terminal Services
or Remote Desktop Services.

Re: [CGUYS] LCD screen for photographer

2007-07-26 Thread Tom Piwowar
While a few select people may have some overwhelming need for some
version of 'color accuracy' (whatever THAT is), most of us put that
lofty concept way down on our list. A good *looking* picture is much
more important. As well as weight and footprint.

Sure, take your advice from someone who says 'color accuracy' (whatever
THAT is).

This from luminous-landscape.com...

This is the area in which the Artisan really struts its stuff -- black
differentiation. You can see extremely fine difference in black level
that are simply not visible on an LCD. I didn't believe it myself until I
saw a demonstration. Even the best LCDs like the Apple Cinemadisplay
can't compare when it comes to differentiating fine shades of black and
gray.

A Small Experiment

Here's a small experiment that you can do to see how well your current
monitor can display fine gradations of gray and black. In Photoshop
create a file that fills most of the screen (Ctrl/CMD-N). Make the whole
field black by using the paint bucket tool (G). Now use the rectangular
marquee tool to create a selection that fills about 50% of the frame, in
the center.

Call up the Curves tool (CTRL/CMD-M) and click on the control point on
the bottom left of the line, at position 0-0.

Dim the lights in the room and make sure that there are no reflections on
the screen, and that the light is as low as you would normally work in.
Now, using the Up-Arrow key on your keyboard move the control point so
that it moves upwards, increasing the output level.

Look for the following.

-- Can you monitor clearly display each separate level starting at
level 1?

-- If not starting at 1, at what level can you start to see a
difference between the area within the selection and the rest of the
picture area?

-- Is each level distinct, or can you only see every second or third
level at the lower range of brightness?

A very high quality calibrated monitor such as the Sony Artisan can pass
this test easily, with every single brightness level clearly discernable.
Don't be suprised if your monitor doesn't. Few can.

The viewing angle issue is going to have to be solved before LCD
monitors can seriously compete with CRTs for accurate color, and
brightness and contrast values. Two people simultaneously viewing a
CRT monitor will pretty much see the same thing. Not so on an LCD.
Get your image to look perfect on a CRT, and it will look the same
every time. On an LCD, it will change if you move your head a couple
of inches.

I think that what you are seeing are long term Windows users buying
Macs so that they can still run their familiar WIndows applications,
yet also have access to the Macintosh environment. Why else would they
part with the perceived additional cost of a Mac unless they are being
enticed by the Mac OS and what it has to offer? My personal experience
with a few die-hard Windows users is that they are seriously
considering a Mac as their next computer purchase, and for exactly the
above reason.

I see no evidence whatsoever that Apple is phasing itself out of the
OS business.

Does Apple not have the market share enjoyed by Windows machines
because the computers they make are not only horribly ugly, but are
just plain lousy to begin with, or is it because their operating
systems over the years have traditionally been unstable and therefore
almost useless? Or, is it because Apple did not focus almost
exclusively on the button-down business office user and environment
from the outset, and instead appealed to the more artistically inclined
user? Or, is there some other reason that you can think of?

As a Mac fanboy, I personally do not care one whit what Apple's
market share is. Their market share played no role whatsoever in my
decision to use Macs, it plays no role in my continuing enjoyment of
the Mac, and it plays no role at all in my willingness to suggest Macs
to anyone looking for a pleasant computing experience.

In fact, I would guess that the big boys at Apple Corp. are not
particularly agonizing over the fact that Windows machines outsell
Macintosh machines. I think that Apple would have to resort to
licensing others to build computers for them in order to really try to
compete with the market penetration that Windows has. Apple already
did that, and decided to stop the practice. I think that Apple is
pretty happy these days.

Re: [CGUYS] Apple Posts Record Quarterly Profit

2007-07-26 Thread Rev. Stewart Marshall
I think what he was getting at is that they make more money and
profitability on their hardware then they do on their software.

Micro$oft makes more money on software than they do on hardware (Does
anyone need to mention Xbox?)

Also Dell is fast becoming an Insurance Giant. A few years ago it
was revealed that Dell made more money on selling service agreements
than it did on hardware. (Note Dell does not manufacture software
but is a reseller of software) Those neat gold service plans that
are sold with Dell are a real money maker for them. (I recently had
to clean up after a Dell tech who replaced a MB and HD and did not
reinstall any of the drivers! It was a Gold Level tech visit)

So what he said was not inaccurate but it also was not a complete picture.

Just like the number discrepancy between ATT and Apple on how many
Iphones were sold the first week.

Proving? Not until it has been demonstrated. All they have done is

Actually the person discovering this vulnerability is an iPhone fan. One

to pry it out of his cold dead hands.

Anyone who has used the iPhone, loves the iPhone. Except for the

Presumably those 'demanding' Macs are using them to run Windows,
because hits on my site are holding steady at around 2%. Oddly, not
too much more than are running Windows Longhorn (Windows Server 2008)

It's got to be particularly galling to Mac fanboys that in order to
gain any kind of market share Apple is having to phase out of the
computer OS business.

[CGUYS] LCD screen for photographer

for a new LCD to replace it. I'm on a Windows XP, I'm fine with that

Can I get some recommendations for a good cinema display? tia.

Re: [CGUYS] LCD screen for photographer

2007-07-26 Thread Rev. Stewart Marshall

CRT's are still readily available.

Look at NewEgg, Tiger Direct and a few others. The big difference is
that their prices are way down.

I prefer a CRT because I can adjust the screen resolution to what I
want, not what is native to the LCD screen.

I presently have a 19 for what a 14 cost 10 years ago.

Stewart

This was true maybe 3-5 years ago. But no longer. Go to any trade show

occasions I want someone else to look at my monitor, I move a bit; no
big deal. Certainly not worth hassling with a CRT. And I don't know
where you get your CRTs, but after dealing with them for 50 years now
I can agree with the NTSC moniker - Never Twice the Same Color.

While a few select people may have some overwhelming need for some
version of 'color accuracy' (whatever THAT is), most of us put that
lofty concept way down on our list. A good *looking* picture is much
more important. As well as weight and footprint.

Get your image to look perfect on a CRT, and it will look the same
every time. On an LCD, it will change if you move your head a couple
 of inches.

Re: [CGUYS] Firefox f-up

2007-07-26 Thread Tom Piwowar
Being a Terminal virgin, I'm probably making an obvious mistake.

There is no room for virgins in Unixland.

Firefox.exe -safe-mode
Terminal responded:
-bash: firefox.exe: command not found

Great if you are big on interior decoration. Not so great if you are
serious about photography.

Great discussion here...
http://www.outbackphoto.com/tforum/viewtopic.php?TopicID=1700

Starts off with a long post by Karl Lang (the father of both the
original
PressView, ColorMatch RGB and the Artisan monitors).

Color accurate LCDs pose many problems. I will not argue the CRT vs LCD
debate. Suffice to say there are elements of a calibrated CRT that
still can't be matched by any LCD - available - and there are also
elements of LCD technology that exceed CRTs. We are improving things
at a rapid pace. I expect within 2-3 years to be able to finally feel
comfortable stating that we have an all around superior product in the
LCD space.

This statement is about a year old, so we are closer to having LCDs that

work. Just not there yet. So you might as well get a cheap Dell for
$200.
