I guess that looking at things from the top of the heap is going to look
different than looking at it from the bottom. So those with the crappy
computers are going to be resentful of the Mac owners. Meanwhile the Mac
owners will be showing little patience with the constant stream of
Windows problems that they don't want to hear about.

I think the Mac owners impatience stems from a belief that these are
self-inflicted wounds. I mean if someone is born crippled or is injured
in an accident, most people will be sympathetic. But it is much harder to
be sympathetic when faced with both a self-inflicted wound and a refusal
to take an easy cure.

Thanks too. I did not know about Dirvish. Yes it does look like Apple's
Time Machine is borrowing from this open source project.

Time Machine looks more attractive because I don't need to set up a Unix
server. All Time Machine requires is another disk drive. The operating
system takes care of everything else.

I see an interesting note that Dirvish does not get along so well with a
journaled file system. Hopefully kinks like this will be nicely sugar
coated by Apple. I also wonder about how it works with File Vault.

Has anyone spotted a Dervish applicance? This looks like a nice product
for a compamy like Linksys to provide. Or mayne someone has a hack to
convert an NSLU2 into a Dervish server? That would be cool too.

b_s-wilk wrote:

I HATE FLASH for content on web sites. I can't view the site at all
without waiting for it to load, even though it was much faster without
Flash. Worse, where there are several links I want to view, I can't
right-click/control-click to open each link in a new tab, so I have to
wait for each link to open separately. It's much harder to parse the
code for A/V links to view in stand-alone players--this helps for
streaming A/V that is timed.

Even worse, Adobe Flash is a resource hog, likely to slow down
everything else. Flash doesn't "like" to be in the background, so I
have to wait for the Flash to load before I can go to another tab or
window in the same browser. This happens on new and old computers, on
slow and fast networks, with plenty of RAM.

Does Adobe give the Flash authoring program away free? Why do so many
web developers use it when it's vastly inferior to other choice,
including plain HTML and static images to provide fast information.
Today alone I tried to pay my bills online. Three of the sites use
Flash. Two didn't work, although they did before the Flash was added.
Do Nokia, Samsung, Honda, et al need to use video for their index
pages? I went to Samsung to look up some cell phones and closed the
window instead of waiting for yet another new video to load when all I
really want is specs on a phone. Nokia's site was much faster and more
user friendly before Flash. Makes navigation more complicated.

Maybe web developers will get tired of creating Flash images--takes
longer than other formats to create--and stop wasting our time.
Sometimes Flash is appropriate, like for videos, but too often the web
is being taken over by Trash with FLASH.

WMV may be a standard for Windows video but it isn't universal. It's not
used seriously for pro video, either. Microsoft has Windows Media Player
for Windows. They don't develop for other platforms, and in the usual
Micro$oft paranoid manner, they don't provide all of the APIs for other
platforms so that third party apps can be fully functional. WMV9 isn't
fully open. As a result there are Windows-only features in sites whose
clueless authors thought that anybody could view. You use Windows, so
you wouldn't notice. Most people who visit a site that doesn't work just
leave. The site owners don't know unless it's a bank or something that's
absolutely necessary for the visitor/customer/employee to access. Then
they get complaints, maybe flames.

The main requirement for the Internet is universality. I'm talking about
web pages and features working for all fairly recent platforms and
browsers. The MPEG codecs are open, so players are available. The
objects are also fast enough to work. Not so with Flash. Flash objects
may be small, but they're slow. WMV objects are unreliable. They fail to
load or lose a stream after a short time. That's unacceptable. BTW,
Flash is much older than WMV9 or any other WM version, too. It began in
Macromind/Macromedia Director before it was spun off as a separate
program. At least the Director files loaded very quickly and ran
standalone on almost any ancient platform; but that was before Adobe ate
Flash--the company that also bloated Photoshop as soon as they bought it
from the Knoll brothers.

I don't pay for broadband so I can hassle with broken .wmv streams or
wait for Flash video to load. There's too many bad web authors and
authoring tools, using inappropriate features.

Fifteen years and we're back to the *World Wide Wait*. Thanks, Adobe.
Thanks, Microsoft. Thanks, clueless web authors. And thanks advertisers,
for using Flash for ads in my Flashblocked browsers.

If the FTP site is outside of your virtual network you are passing
through a firewall that looks like it has the FTP ports shut off. Easy
solution is to access FTP server from outside of your network. Hard
solution is to beg and plead to have the FTP ports opened.

[CGUYS] Standards & Flash

2007-10-23 Thread Tony B
As much as you might not like to admit it, when an OS generates 92% of the
traffic on a website, that's a standard. 91% of that is Windows versions
that can play .wmv9 with no trouble. [stats pulled from my own community
website just now]

Yes, pro video people use wmv9 all the time these days for many purposes. I
*am* one so I can talk. Flash _video_ is *not* older than .wmv, nor even
wmv9 which is when I started using it (and is all I'm talking about). As I
recall, video only became possible with Flash 6, but to date there are no
easy/free converters or players (I believe Adobe is getting set to release a
free player RSN). So far, authors must encode and include a player with
their Flash video.

BTW wmv9 video has been approved as a standard by SMPTE (they call it VC-1).
Flash video has not. You're going to be seeing a lot more of it since it's
one of the standards included in HD-DVD and Blu-ray disks.

WMV may be a standard for Windows video but it isn't universal. It's not

Using your own logic, if YouTube uses Flash, then Flash it is.

The thing with Flash is that it is as close to universal as anything is
ever going to be. A lot more universal than WMV. A lot more reliable too.

>Yes, pro video people use wmv9 all the time these days for many purposes. I
>*am* one so I can talk.

A pro would be more likely to use H.264/MPEG4. WMV9 is MS's latest "me
too" version of digital video. In true MS fashion WMV9 comes in a variety
of flavors some of which are incompatable. Its DRMed version doesn't even
work on the Zune.

>Flash _video_ is *not* older than .wmv, nor even
>wmv9 which is when I started using it (and is all I'm talking about).

>BTW wmv9 video has been approved as a standard by SMPTE (they call it VC-1).

One of several similar standards. Getting standardized does not mean that
it is good, just that it has been codified. All the current standards are
related to MPEG4 and MEPG4 is just Apple QuickTime standardized.

Perhaps you don't understand what STANDARDS are.

It doesn't matter whether Windows has 51% or 92% of the traffic.
Standards are for the rest of us who choose not to use Windows for many
reasons, not just for Windows users. Broken web sites lose visitors and
money when they aren't designed for everybody. Smart web designers don't
use bad and/or broken code.

Your community web site is not a good measure of users anyway. Many of
us have to hide our browser/platform ID in order to get into web sites.
The stat says Windows, but the visitors are using something else. The
statistical sample is too small to be significant, too. Funny, the stats
from my site show less than 50% using Windows. That's as significant as
your stats.

**The Internet and World Wide Web are designed to be platform and
browser independent. Wise web developers create sites for _everybody_,
not only for Windows users**

Yes, pro video people use wmv9 all the time these days for many purposes. I
*am* one so I can talk. Flash _video_ is *not* older than .wmv, nor even
wmv9 which is when I started using it (and is all I'm talking about). As I
recall, video only became possible with Flash 6, but to date there are no
easy/free converters or players (I believe Adobe is getting set to release a
free player RSN).

I did Director videos long before WMV was a belch in Bill Gates' throat.
No. Professionals who do video advertising for TV and who create
theatrical movies do not use WMV. They'd be laughed out of the studio
for suggesting it, unless they work at MSN.

[CGUYS] Mac OS UG's

2007-10-23 Thread gerald
Mac 10.5.0 arrives next week. someone is selling it for $106. when they fix
it 6 months from now with 10.5.1, what will be the charge, another $106, or
170?? or historically when mac went from 10.4.0 to.1.2.3.4, ect, what did
they charge?

I sort of recall MS sending out the UG's which they called section 8's or some
such, and did not charge.

from what I read on the mac/apple BB's, the anals are all confident that 10.5
will not run right, but they got to have it.

I can't help but say that the worst thing about Macs/OSX is the Dock.

Great operating system otherwise but whenever I am using OS X and
multi-tasking between programs, web pages, files etc, I am spending a

I know the various techniques & shortcuts that OSX gives you to deal

For me the principal design strangeness is that the Dock shows you at a
glance the apps you are running but not necessarily multiple windows/
docs that you might have open. You have to dig deeper for that

If the same arrangement was in your car, in looking at your car's
dashboard, you would open a door to see the instruments and another door
to see what the speed is, and another for the tachometer etc.

LOT of time struggling with the various windows... trying to find
one I had open before, trying to get others I have, open out of the
way etc.

I know the various techniques & shortcuts that OSX gives you to deal
with these issues but they are clumsy and laborious compared to
Windows Taskbar where all can be seen at a glance and accessed with
one click or keystroke.

Re: [CGUYS] Need new, easy, reliable, portable, simple, secure, lasting email application!

2007-10-23 Thread Randall Bosin
Okay, thanks

Can email and addresses from Outlook Express (or Outlook) be easily exported to
it? Any compatibility problems with certain ISPs, browsers or other
applications?

Did briefly check it out and apparently is some limitation in replying to
emails with attachments if you wish to add commentary, or at least as of Feb.
07. If true, seems like a red flag, because don't know why you shouldn't be
able to do this, so makes me wonder what else you might not be able to do or as
readily as in OE. Just really, really, really want to avoid recurrent email
problems.

BTW, Comcast desktop doctor was worthless in solving email problems, as have
been about 7 Comcast tech support persons over the past several months, just in
case anyone is contemplating switching to them.

Thanks

Randall

My recollection is that it can indeed import from OE or Outlook. You
*might* have to export to standard address format, then import - I
never really used OE or Outlook before I went Mac.

I used it for 10+ years or so without any problems.

Don't know what you mean wrt replies. One thing I always liked about
Pegasus was that you could have seriously nested replies with
multiple attachments, and on the receiving end you could see each of
the attachments in a file tree without having to open them.
