My clear preference is for FIOS over comcast for internet. The FIOS tv service left somethings to be desired. The cable box and its software is c-r-*-p (yes, it is crop). Perhaps unrelated to the set-top problems is that channels (particularly the local channels, and PBS) drop out all the time. You have never lived unless you try to delete a failed DVR recording from a FIOS cable box. Is cable really supposed to have faster speeds? If so, that has to assume no contention with other users. The only contention with other users on FiOS is at the CO and the backbone. All I can say is that LCD/Plasma TV's are the best way to go for clarity. I have a conventional in the bedroom and a flatpanel in the Living room and the difference is absolutely clear. I can read the text and clearly see it. I also have TIVO on both sets and the TIVO menu is crystal clear on the flatpanel and it is fuzzy on the Tube one. I have not heard great things about DLP. On the others I have no idea. I just know from what I have personally seen at home and other. To me that is the acid test. I do not have specialized video going to feed all my TV's so I can show the best it can possibly do. One of the biggest problems in looking at TV's and such at Best Buy or Circuit City is that you are usually seeing specialized feeds to show the best the TV can do under ideal conditions. Most of us at home do not have ideal conditions. I also check www.Cnet.com and Consumer Reports. They usually have the best reviews on stuff. Straightforward and honest. I recently used my Tomtom with someone who bought a Garmin and he preferred my Tomtom to his Garmin. The Tomtom was listed as a Bestbuy by CR. I include in their bias American made cars. In many of their past reviews they would talk about what was right with the American made car and then give it lousy ratings when it did not deserve it. (In checking their charts they usually were on par with the foreign made one) In many cases I have lived in areas where owning a foreign made car was uneconomical as you had to travel great distances to get service. My in-laws own an Accura and still have to travel 300 miles for service on their vehicle. Where I live presently it is no problem getting service on foreign made cars as they are ubiquitous in this area (Especially foreign bought foreign cars, military base) Not only that in our state, Hyundai, Kia, and Mercedes all have plants. And a lot of storage! Well, the real hardware overhead is in the graphics processors and the cpus. In gaming applications the entire machine is being pushed to the maximum. That is why geeks like me buy 1000 watt power supplies, multiple video cards and big displays. It makes sense if you are into the gaming thing. For a normal person it would be severe overkill. .
