[CGUYS] AVG free update attack?

2010-03-15 Thread John Emmerling
I have installed AVG free on my computer and my wife's computer.

Several days ago, I saw a prompt similar to what you see when Windows
installs a critical update, saying that I had received an update and
would need to restart the computer to complete installation. The
prompt had an AVG logo, so I went ahead and clicked OK.

Within the subsequent time frame (without necessarily inferring
causality) I have started to experience random hang ups unlike
anything I've seen before. Sometimes the login page itself freezes
(so that it doesn't respond to a user prompt). Sometimes login works
but it never gets to the desktop (it freezes at the personal
settings message). Sometimes I can log all the way in and use
applications, then unpredictably it will freeze at a later time. When
it freezes, I can still move the mouse cursor, and some desktop
widgets seem to respond to an extent, but it is impossible to bring up
the task manager, so I can't look for suspicious processes.

My wife apparently got the same sort of prompt (although she doesn't
specifically recall seeing the AVG logo), but her computer seems
unaffected.

Does anybody know if the AVG update prompt was legitimate? It seems
to me that if this was an actual attack, work would have spread by now
(I haven't heard anything about it). I am suspicious because I
haven't experienced AVG presenting this type of prompt in the past,
that I can recall.

Re: [CGUYS] Laptop flicker and dying battery

The flicker mysteriously went away during the process of reinstalling
Windows (which included a thorough reformatting of the C: drive). It was
evident while in BIOS setup as well as during the initial text based phases
of Windows installation (including reformatting), but then during the
installation proper, I noticed the flicker had gone away. I can't see how
this could have been a consequence of the computer warming up, as my son
leaves it on pretty much all the time.

The only other explanation that occurs to me is that the problem was due to
a corruption of the BIOS or the boot sector, and somehow the installer
cleaned it out.

It would be wonderful if, by some miracle, the computer has actually been

[CGUYS] Laptop flicker and dying battery

My son's almost 3 year old Latitude has developed a flicker which makes it

When I booted the computer, I saw a message saying Your battery is able to
charge normally, however it is reaching the end of its usable life. Could

However, sidestepping the more technical unix hacks for the
moment, what happens if you just try to change permissions for
the file using the Sharing and Permissions section of the Get info

file and for its parent folder?

Getting back to the command line, one thing that occurs to me is
that you may not have the name exactly right (the uppercase i
might be a lower case L or there may be a space in the name
that you're not seeing, for example. To avoid this, in terminal, type

 rm -i

with a space after the -i, then drag the file over the terminal window
and the path to the file with the correct name will magically appear, with
special characters like \ handled appropriately. Hit the return key,
and if the only problem was getting the name right, the file should be
deleted. If that doesn't work, try it again using sudo, typing

 sudo rm -i

and proceeding as before, typing your password at the prompt.
If you get an error message saying it is a directory, try removing
the file as above, but with

 rm -r

in place of rm -i, and if that fails, try this with sudo.

 A couple of ideas:

 1) move everything else out of that directory.

 cd ..
 \rm -rf that directory name

 2) I'm not sure if OSX comes with emacs, but I've used emacs' directory
 mode
to delete files with funny characters in the filenames.

 start emacs
^x^v (that's ctrl-x; ctrl-v) and give the directory name (not the file
 name)
You will get a directory listing.
move the cursor to the filename, then d for delete
Then x for expunge the file marked with d.
 exit emacs with ^x^c

 3) (yeah, three is more than a couple ...)
Perhaps, a different shell may have better filename completion? Does OSX
 have tcsh?
start tcsh; then \rm -f Icotab and see if it completes the filename with
 the proper escape character?

Uh ... why can't you use the Finder window to navigate to the file and
 drag
 it to Trash?

Although it would be nice to cite a reference for the world's health

I avoided addressing this in the interest of simplicity. A desktop or

of enterprise class systems, the market for which is dominated by Sun and

Marketing is Apple's biggest strength.

Which reminds me of an incident about 2 decades ago. My wife and I had a
Japanese student at our house for a home stay of 3 weeks. His English was
relatively good for a Japanese student. Anyway, we had watched TV with him
on several occasions. One evening, he made the observation that all the
automobile ads he saw on TV seemed to be for products of Japan-based
companies. So far as we could tell, he was essentially right. Remember,

You probably need a fair number of amps to drive speakers to a reasonable
volume.

There's probably a good reason portable mp3 players don't usually come with
them (maybe the really big ones could handle this).

I think you need a boom box into which you can plug the output from an mp3
player, like what new automotive sound systems generally come with.

Also, I don't know much specific about Coby mp3 players, but when I've seen
that brand name on line, it seems to me it has usually been associated with
what I would suspect are cheap products (way too much advertised capability,
given the price).

2009-02-10 Thread John Emmerling
If you're talking about the recent unpleasantness in Gaza, then there are no
disputed zones at issue. It is my impression that the rockets launched
from Gaza (the stated provocation for the Israeli incursions into Gaza) have
largely landed in neighboring parts of Israel e.g. Ashkelon. These areas
are widely recognized as part of Israel and have been since the end of the
original Arab/Israeli war (although if you want to get picky, they were part
of the Arab partition according to the partition plan of the time, which
Israel accepted and neighboring countries rejected). The Palestinian Police
have absolutely no business being there. The people living in these areas
cannot legitimately be described as settlers, any more than you, as a
person of European or African descent (sorry, I have no way knowing) can be
described as a settler because you live in North America (I assume).

If you're not specifically talking about the recent violence in Gaza, please
make this clear.

Thanks!

[CGUYS] Computer dropped dead overnight

Not much to say. A 4-year-old eMachines used by my wife (ironically I had

I tried plugging it into a different outlet (it is normally on a UPS).

There were no power interruptions overnight, I would have known because

Any suggestions beyond the obvious?

Re: [CGUYS] Taxes and good life

2009-01-31 Thread John Emmerling
Some general observations (I make some assertions without proof, feel free
to provide contradictory data):
1.) Compared to other western countries, Americans are significantly more
religious. Religious folk seem to see life's problems as being between
themselves and God, and don't have much use for the government. BTW I don't
mean this as a criticism.
2.) The US has always embraced small town and rural culture and disdained
urban life. Rural and small-town people typically depend on themselves,
their family, and their neighbors for survival, and don't have much use for
the government. In other western countries, the urban elite seem to have
more influence, and they look down on country folk as backward. And urban
existence, with its dependence on a complex infrastructure, depends heavily
on having an effective government (go visit Mogadishu if you don't believe
me).
3.) Americans have come to expect government initiatives to fail. They
consider a career working for the government (except in the areas of law
enforcement and national security) as a refuge for the incompetent. Largely
a self-fulfilling prophecy.

As a consequence, Americans don't see themselves as getting much return for
their tax dollars, and so they basically feel they are being robbed. I am
not prepared to say whether they are right or wrong. Having grown up and
lived all my life in the US, it always amazes me that people in countries
like France are not afraid to trust their health care entirely to government
employees. On the other hand, I can't ignore the ample evidence that
supports this conclusion.

I don't have access to a Vista system, however with XP Pro, there is a
distinction between an account the user creates having administrative

automatically when Windows is installed. Some brain-dead software
will only install under that account. I have some VPN software which
required that (or it may have been the corporate version of Symantec,
it doesn't really matter). This account won't be listed with the
accounts that appear on the usual Windows login screen. To log in,
you have to perform a three fingered salute when presented with the
log in screen, which should give you a prompt box into which you can
manually type the user name Administrator. You were probably asked
to specify the password for this account when you booted your computer
for the first time. If you can't remember what password you
specified, you are theoretically out of luck, although I believe there
are tools around that would let you reset the password. Or it's
possible you can reset the password when logged in as a user with
admin privileges.

Again, I don't know whether any of what I have just said holds for
Vista, but maybe it helps.

to run Active-X, install plugins, run in IE, etc.

I'm a Unix/Linux guy. I have Solaris and Ubuntu machines on my desktops
at home as well as at the office. I keep a Windows machine on the side
just to satisfy my silly obsession with this funny sport. Since it isn't
my main machine, I don't mind running IE, active-x etc in the Windows box.
Knock-on-wood, for the past few years, I've never had malware or viruses
in it. But for someone whose main machine is a Windows box, it probably
 is a different proposition.

This sort of gets to the other two current threads in the list. Once one
gets used to a User Interface, it feels natural. All other UIs feel like
too much work or non-intuitive. I've lived in a mainly Windows world with
my *nixes that have CLIs, OpenOffice, Firefox, etc. Except in this one
instance, I need a Windows box to watch a streaming video without jumping
through hoops to access the raw stream, convert to something linux can
deal with, etc. OSes are just tools to get the job done. Cricket? Now,
 that's a religion. :)

Is there any way to install this software?

Re: [CGUYS] When will Intrepid Ibex show up in Synaptic?

I don't see a button like that. There is a button that says Mark All

be more specific where to find this button?

As I recall, for both Gutsy Gibbon and Hardy Heron, the upgrade simply
showed up as a recommended update in Update Manager.

Re: [CGUYS] When will Intrepid Ibex show up in Synaptic?

2008-12-15 Thread John Emmerling
Well, I finally found the answer on my own.

You have to invoke Update Manager with the -d command line option.
Then you see the button. It appears to the right of a message that
says New distribution release 8.10 is available. Could be a bug in
my system it doesn't do this by default (as it did in previous
releases). Or possibly because 8.04 is LTS.

The TiVo lifetime contract is a gamble... $300 and no monthly payments, but
only for the lifetime of your DVR. TiVo currently only offers lifetime
contracts for the newer HD DVR's (Series 3) (works with older TV's as well).
The Lifetime contract is for the life of the unit you purchased.. more
specifically the ID in the BIOS chip on the motherboard. There is a third
party company that will fix your TiVo, even down to transferring the TiVo
units ID number to another motherboard if necessary, but this is at your
expense (usually around $100 to $200 depending on the problem). I have used
them to reimage the HDD in the past.. they also provide replacment and
upgrade HDD's for your TiVo already loaded with the TiVo software.

 - Brian
  (2) series II TiVo's upgraded to 300 hours, one with lifetime contract

We have gone for a while with no contract, just monthly payments (at
full freight). I would like to set up a contract, but before doing
so, I would like to know what would happen if our current box were to
fail or become woefully obsolete (I am assuming it can't handle HD)
before the end of the contract.

I think it was BillG that was responsible for departing from version

The new version will instead be branded Windows 7, because it is the
seventh of a long line of operating systems for PCs developed by the

 Windows 7 to the public.

In HTTP the user agent for Windows XP shows as NT5.1. Apparently W2K
is NT5.0. If Vista is 6.x, then Windows 7 is 7.x. If Vista is indeed
6.x, then saying that Windows 7 is the seventh version can be
justified according to a well-established, if not well understood,
Microsoft numbering system.

OK I just picked this up from
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/09/20/763891.aspx:

* On Windows XP SP2, IE7 will send the following User-Agent
header: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1)
* On Windows 2003 Server, IE7 will send the following User-Agent
header: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.2)
* On Windows Vista, IE7 will send the following User-Agent header:
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.0)
