I mentioned Cyberduck already. It has a setting to throttle the data rate. I missed that one, Tom. Ill look into it. I checked out S3 as db suggested but it would be around $75/MONTH for me to store all my photos, music,videos and some other misc data. That's a lot per year for just a home user. Guess I'll stick with ext. drives for now. I have joined Smugmug tho and will gradually be uploading all my .jpg's to them so at least those will be safely out there. Interestingly they also offer a vault service so you can store data other than photos thru them. But their vault is thru S3 and it would cost me $99/month for less data than if I went directly thru S3. I'd better start using all the blank cd's and dvd's I have sitting here and just make copies. But their vault is thru S3 and it would cost me $99/month for less data than if I went directly thru S3. An external drive with that much storage costs under $150 and affords a much better data transfer rate. I have been doing this for many years, rotating three drives between office and home. When I first started this a 20GB drive cost me almost $500. Maybe you can make Mozy work for you. Once it's all backed up won't your additions and changes be minimal? A total restore would take a long time too but would be do-able if you didn't mind waiting. The saying: Time is money applies here I guess... I suppose that's true but I'm afraid Comcast will cut my speed if I'm uploading 24/7 for months which is what it would take to do it all. When I stop the upload and restart it later it appears to begin all over again so I don't want to stop it. Also the Mac version doesn't have a place where you can adjust the speed of the upload to lessen the pressure on the computer resources so I'm stuck with the way they have it set. I've emailed their tech support (3 days ago) but have gotten no response. I'm going to check out the links you sent to reviews of other services too. Thanks for your input on this. db I didn't realize you had so much data Paula. Mozy Home would not be the best solution for that amount... it is oriented for avg. people's document storage. Not sure Mozy Pro would be better either. Then, after doing your next backup, take the 2nd unit with your on your next trip, and bring the 1st unit back home. That way, you have an offsite backup (in case your house burns, floods, gets burgled, etc.). And you have another backup at home, in case your in-computer disk dies, and you need to do a restoration right away. And no more weeks-long initial backup over the Internet. And, while 2 external disks will cost a few hundred dollars, its a one time cost. (Well, one time until your backups outgrow the external drives.) But I have found that my external drives end up not working right after sitting for a while. I have two WD 'MyBook' drives that my mac won't mount so I can't get anything off them or add to them. Another one is making loud clicking sounds so doesn't sound like it's going to be around long...and when I tried to mount it recently my Mac wouldn't see it at all. It is backed up on another drive so all is not lost. I just thought 'online' storage would be safer. After 2 days I a m 47% thru the 13 gb of my first part of the backup. If I can't cancel and get my money refunded I'll just have to keep only my doc folder backed up there and find another solution for the photos and music. I didn't realize you had so much data Paula. Mozy Home would not be the best solution for that amount... it is oriented for avg. people's document storage. Not sure Mozy Pro would be better either. For those avg. amounts Mozy does take a day to do the initial backup (at a 2gb to 9gb / day rate) but thereafter it only does differential backup for anything that has changed or been added/ deleted so it doesn't take long after the initial backup has been completed. And Mozy is meant only as a backup tool ... not filesharing or online storage ... thus the $4.95/ mo. unlimited storage good price and easy interface. And if you look at Mozy's options you will see you can throttle the bandwidth it uses or schedule it's operation for convenient periods so it should never interfere with other processes. Also Mozy is owned by a blue chip company EMC (VMware...) so they will be around and stay competitive.They now are expanding Mozy technology into enterprise backups with Mozy Enterprise. But S3/ Jungle disk is probably more the kind of online storage tool for you. Price was great for unlimited storage. But, it is so S-L-O-W that it's almost pointless to have. It will take me YEARS to back everything up at this rate. I have 450 GB of music,podcasts,tv shows, photos,plugins and documents to back up. I am on a Macmaybe that makes a difference but it has Mac software. I had it running for 24 hrs and it had only uploaded a tiny fraction of a % of the total files! So I stopped it and set it to only backup my documents folder which is 13GB. It has been running all day and only has 10% uploaded so far. It also slows down my web browsing and I couldn't get email to go out unless I stopped it. It's running now and email is going out so not sure what changed. All in all, unless you only have a tiny amount to backup, I don't think it's such a good solution. And, you can't go on and see your files. You have to redownload the backup to see it. Guess I'll stick with external drives and try to remember to take it to my son's house. Jungle disk was described on the Security Now podcast #123 and includes an interview with Dave Wright of Jungle Disk. Steve Gibson sounded fairly impressed with the security of the program. Amazon is trying to sell S3 and its processors as a computing platform. If they had poor security it would scuttle the entire business. So I would expect Amazon to make considerable effort to protect their system. However, at present I would judge S3's security to be unproven.
