[CGUYS] Google Desktop/Chrome: what information is shared with the mother ship?
The Google Chrome EULA has many privacy issues that may affect state agencies. But these could be issues for businesses as well. I recall a similar issue with the Desktop program which after replacing the very nice and non-evil Deskbar search basically mapped your computer and any connected servers (with company/organization/agency data on them) if you let it. Many users allow it to do this without any concern and the IT people have to gauge how vigilant to be regarding this usage. Any sense about the extent of the information mapped that is transmitted back to google - is all of it? Does the browser have any of the same issues considering that as I understand it Google used an old version of WebKit and Chrome is full of security holes. http://blogs.zdnet.com/topic/Google+Chrome.html Regarding the EULA: You retain copyright and any other rights that you already hold in Content that you submit, post or display on or through the Services. Yeah, Google came out and said that part about owning your house if you upload a picture of it with chrome was not something that was going to stay. http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080903-google-on-chrome-eula-controversy-our-bad-well-change-it.html Mike On Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 1:50 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The Google Chrome EULA has many privacy issues that may affect state agencies. Have you tried EasyFind? www.devon-technologies.com/products/freeware Don't like it. Slow. Not enough choices. None of them could find the chocolate chip cookie recipe in the system. Of course. This is not a good tool for searching file contents as it does not index files beforehand. It is great for the purpose we were discussing: finding file names. None of the search tools could find exactly what I wanted quickly without having to muddle through a big list of irrelevant results. None of the tools could search the system without first using Safari [Location = file:///usr... etc.] to open some of the invisible folders and add to the sidebar, or using OnyX. Yes, EasyFind finds file names, but it's much slower than the others. It's so slow that it's like browsing on dialup. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? None of the tools could search the system without first using Safari [Location = file:///usr... etc.] to open some of the invisible folders and add to the sidebar, or using OnyX. Why would you be searching in invisible folders. The invisible folders are well structured so if you know what you are doing you should know exactly where the file you need resides. If you don't know that, then you probably don't know enough to be mucking with those files. I don't get what Safari (a web browser) has to do with any of this. Yes, EasyFind finds file names, but it's much slower than the others. It's so slow that it's like browsing on dialup. Not always. If a file is indexed then programs with pre-built indices will of course be faster. If you have no index or an indexing problem then EasyFind is much faster. Many who dislike the user interface of Spotlight or Google, do like EasyFind. It all depends... * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] Google desktop
Google Desktop has been a problem. Soon after installation, Google Desktop use up to 99% of my CPU for searching the same file for a day or more: a graphics file. Can you restrict what Google Desktop indexes to a particular set of files or set of directories? I know I can with Apple Spotlight. Maybe Google does this too? Google can do advanced searches, but it's very cumbersome and annoying. The results are messy. I hate Spotlight because its defaults are stupid. I use the Find command in the Finder. I still need to select the parameters, and that's a pain. I'm looking for a way to set the defaults to find by name. I've usually been able to find just about anything by name and often by date. Including related file types with names that have nothing to do with what I want before I choose that parameter is just a PITA. Can I take the old Find app from 10.3 and make it work in 10.4? It could find anything better, faster than Spotlight, et al. With Find you have to turn on the extra features instead of turning them off. Worse, yet, I can't search for anything inside the system folder without first using Safari to reveal the invisible folders. None of the searches, least of all Google Desktop can find things well. And you have to search through the excess results to find what you were trying to find in the first place! I hate to be relegated to using the Terminal when a good GUI should be available. Sort of. Preferences allows you to exclude specified files folders. Can you restrict what Google Desktop indexes to a particular set of files or set of directories? I know I can with Apple Spotlight. Re: [CGUYS] Google desktop
This is a fair question. Since you ask, I will answer. I have a LOT of software on my PC computer and I use most of it frequently. The software includes mathematical engineering design programs, graphics design, video editing, music composition, CD DVD burning and ripping software, and many other kinds. Perhaps 150 or more application suites are there. For example, I often make concert programs in WordPerfect for symphony orchestras and other groups, such as quartets. I research the composer the musical work and then write program notes about the works, saving each as a file with filename identifying the group and date. Now, suppose that the same composer or same work is to be performed a year or two later by a different group: I would like to find the notes of the earlier concert program instead of researching from scratch. Thus, I need a search program that will find all earlier text in WordPerfect (or anywhere else). So far, Windows search function is slow and unreliable for this purpose. This is why I tried Google Desktop. It has a plugin for WordPerfect. For some reason, it uses 99% of my CPU if left for a few hours regardless of whether the WP plugin is installed. I have un-installed it. Tony B wrote: But I just gotta ask: What is it you do that you need to do these searches so much? I think I might do a search like this once a year, which is why I'm dragging my feet reinstalling a desktop searcher right now. I mean, it's not like you can't do the search in Windows. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Recently I had to delete the registry entry for WordPerfect on my PC and reinstall same. When the new installation (including the new X3, so named because it is version 13 that superstition won't allow) my ability to search WP files for text strings was no more. The WP newsgroup said that this ability is not included with an OEM version of WP, but it seemed to carry over from an earlier full version that I had installed before getting the newer OEM version. Instead, the WP newsgroup suggested to install Google Destop as an alternative. There is a plug-in to make text in WordPerfect files available for Google Desktop search. Google Desktop has been a problem. Soon after installation, Google Desktop use up to 99% of my CPU for searching the same file for a day or more: a graphics file. I contacted Google help, which told me which file was at fault and asked me to send same to them. No reply after doing so. I deleted the graphics file. For several days Google Desktop ran OK but now it once again is taking large portions of CPU. I have uninstalled it now. Does anyone else know of a similar program for Google Desktop? The real reason that I want this kind of program is to replace the text search for WordPerfect. If necessary, I will uninstall WP and reinstall from version 5 to the latest version in hopes of getting somehow the search facility back, but this is likely to take two days or more of my time.
I dunno the answer; I've used several desktop search apps and never had much trouble. The last I used was the freeware X1 (http://www.x1.com/); I never heard they had an X3 version (or a 13th version for that matter!). But I just gotta ask: What is it you do that you need to do these searches so much? I think I might do a search like this once a year, which is why I'm dragging my feet reinstalling a desktop searcher right now. I mean, it's not like you can't do the search in Windows.
