[CGUYS] Is my computer finally crashing?
Well, after all that talk about choosing a new Mac Book Pro, I started getting some scary error messages on my old PowerBook G4 (which is still my only computer). Several applications just crashed and when I tried to relaunch them, I got a pop-up message Application Launch Failure: The application Photoshop could not be launched because of a shared library error: 'applicationapplicationCarbonLib. This didn't just happen for Photoshop but for several other applications as well. Apps like Mail and Firefox still seem to be able to launch. I found some tutorials online to try to fix the problem that will be a big pain in the a**. Just wondering if anyone has further insight. Is this the beginning of the demise of my PowerBook? Thanks, -Julie * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

You should do the general routine maintenance on the computer in case it is a file corruption or permissions problem (Before you start you should backup your data just in case the situation gets worse) . To look for/ fix file corruption, run Disk Utility which is on your startup disk and in the Utilities folder of your computer. Other people on this list can probably give you better guidance on other maintenance routines and tools (but they will want to know what Ver: OS X) but here is some how to URL's http://www.macattorney.com/ts.html http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=2005041817191411 db Julie Kubal wrote: Well, after all that talk about choosing a new Mac Book Pro, I started getting some scary error messages on my old PowerBook G4 (which is still my only computer). Re: [CGUYS] Is my computer finally crashing?
I'm running Max OSX v10.4.11 I ran Disk Utility and got a long message that ended with: Volume Bit Map needs minor repair Checking volume information. Volume Header needs minor repair The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired. Then I get another pop-up message that my DiskManagement Tool requires a password. When I enter my password, I get another error message: First Aid Failure: Disk Utility stopped verifying McIntosh HD because the following error was encountered: The underlying task reported failure on exit. :-( On 26 May 2009, at 14:20, db wrote: You should do the general routine maintenance on the computer in case it is a file corruption or permissions problem (Before you start you should backup your data just in case the situation gets worse) . Looks like you have disk drive problems. If you are lucky a quick fix may make it all right again. If you are unlucky you have been running with a bad drive for to long and various parts have become scrambled. Hope for the best and try to fix it. First try booting from the X.4 DVD and run Disk Utility from there. That may fix it. If that fails you need to get something stronger, like Disk Warrior. This usually works. At the end of the Disk Warrior run you should print out the report and review it carefully. You want to see what was damaged. If you find that you have bunches of program files that have been scrambled you may find it easier to format the drive and start over. Usually it is just a disk structure problem, that DW can fix very well. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
Re: [CGUYS] Is my computer finally crashing?
Thanks Tom. Based on the long report I got when I ran disk utility, it appears that several program files are indeed scrambled. My new external drives arrive tomorrow and as soon as I do a final back-up of the laptop, I'll try the fixes you suggested.
