Re: [Cooker] Linux Mandrake 7.2 beta 2
It sounds like your user account did not get setup properly. I am doing my school work right now, so I am in windows. I do not know off the top of my head how to check user information. The user may be listed, but the password for that user may not be setup correctly. I don't know because I have never had the same problem as you. - Original Message - From: Bernard Brown [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, September 17, 2000 7:07 PM Subject: [Cooker] Linux Mandrake 7.2 beta 2 I downloaded the iso files for what appears to be the beta2 distribution from the site in France. Installation went smoothly, although I found the printer installation was slightly confusing. I selected the CUPs option for my Epson Stylus Color 800 second time around and it worked. It looks good but I have a couple of observations (I didn't get as far as testing out individual packages. 1) I can get pictures of different allowed users for selection prior to selection of the graphic interface (kde gnome etc) and for user log in. However I can only get the system to accept "root" If i try to log on as another user (at the GUI) I get a message which says: " some error setting up inter-process communications for KDF. The message returned by the system was : networksList argument is null. please check that the "dcopserver" program is running" I tried to run the system from the text input ie without the graphics and the same thing occurs. The problem is also the same if Gnome is selected instead of KDE with the graphics interface. 2) I use a cable modem to access the internet. On setting up the system for networking an error occurred if I tried to select "cable modem" and eth0 as my network interfaces. I could get round the error by selecting to configure the internal network for both of my network cards. On looking at the network configuration in Drakconf/ Network it looks OK, but there is no communication with the internet. ( This is disappointing as I have never had a problem with setting up to communicate with the internet using any other version of Linux). Bernard

[Cooker] 7.2b2 -- MandrakeUpdate and proxies
From a fresh 7.2b2 install, MandrakeUpdate doesn't seem to work with a firewall/proxy. The list of new packages is empty (I tried several mirrors). Is it normal ? Also, the button for the proxy configuration are strange : When you select a button : [x] Proxy http : 185.185.185.185 Port 3128 [x] Proxy ftp : 185.185.185.185 Port 3128 the next time you get in the config menu there are both deselected. [Cooker] Netscape bug - any connection to XFree-4.0.1-17mdk?
Lately I'm having some troubles with Netscape. The bug is very specific but I still couldn't fully trace its origin. Note that this bug never happened before and I'm using netscape 4.75 over several X builds. Netscape Mail client trashes its mailbox indexes located on ~/nsmail/.* (* for Index, Trash...). How and when it does that is still a mistery. The phenomena happens randomly and with any kind of mail in any of the mailboxes I have. It happens even on boxes that have been fully cleaned recently. Also, Netscape seems to crash randomly when reading these broken mailboxes: on reading a letter, on deleting, on downloading mail. In one of the events I could read every mail in the Inbox but when I deleted a letter Netscape crashed. The crash is even reflected on the kernel: kernel BUG at ll_rw_blk.c:711! invalid operand: CPU:0 EIP:0010:[__make_request+161/1488] EFLAGS: 00010282 eax: 001f ebx: c689c300 ecx: 0005 edx: 0029 esi: c689c300 edi: c0335bc0 ebp: 0001 esp: c461bea8 ds: 0018 es: 0018 ss: 0018 Process netscape-commun (pid: 801, stackpage=c461b000) Stack: c026092b c0260c22 02c7 c689c300 0001 000c 001e8480 c0335bd8 c0335bd0 0002 c017dc7f 00fe c017e8bd c0335bc0 0001 c689c300 c689c300 0001 c461bf38 Call Trace: [devfsd_buf_size+56899/73016] [devfsd_buf_size+57658/73016] [blk_get_queue+63/84] [generic_make_request+257/272] [ll_rw_block+341/452] [writeout_one_page+52/76] [do_buffer_fdatasync+93/160] [generic_buffer_fdatasync+29/56] [writeout_one_page+0/76] [ext2_sync_file+89/260] [sys_write+139/160] [sys_fsync+74/104] [system_call+51/56] Code: 0f 0b 83 c4 0c 0f b6 46 15 0f b7 4e 14 8b 14 85 40 a2 32 c0 After this the index file is unreadable until reboot (mc hangs reading it). The system seems to continue normal operations but sync or some other disk operations may hang the machine. Netscape hangs if one tries to reload, even if we don't launch the mail client. Besides, doing this, it may risk a full freeze. Reboot has to be done either through Magic Key or through "AnyKey" (reset :) ). After boot my network card gets schizo - the kernel starts an avalanche of timeout warnings (It's a IBM EtherExpress with WakeOnLAN). All files in ~/nsmail are readable. There are no physical problems with the disk that could trigger such situation. The situation can only be solved by deleting the mail indexes. Ektanoor

A known problem I haven't fixed is that if you encounter a big file while using the "delete" option on your rsync script, if your ISP keeps disconecting (BTW for it to work you need to set your PPP connection to autoreconnect, I have also included a simple script to minimize disconnections, "keeup"; you can run it on your "/etc/ppp/ip-up.local") you before the file is finished, then you go in a loop of download-delete (since rsync is killed with -9, it does not renames the ".filename." rsync creates, and it is deleted next time rsync is run). Hi Till! CUPS 22mdk, GhostScript 25mdk, CUPS-Drivers 13mdk Still use 12mdk, as the latest was not on the mirrors as I went home at 17.00 MET. AFTER doing this, do 1. ) Use the GIMP-Print driver for your BJC-6000. Changed to this driver (did not see that there were two of them) 2. ) Edit /etc/cups/cupsd.conf to have the line LogLevel debug Changed this line. (It's now: # LogLevel: controls the number of messages logged to the ErrorLog # file and can be one of the following: # # debug Log everything. # info Log all requests and state changes. # warn Log errors and warnings. # error Log only errors. # none Log nothing. # LogLevel debug ) Take care that you delete the hash mark ('#') in the beginning. Restart the CUPS daemon with /etc/rc.d/init.d/cups restart. If you refer to the LogLevel line, it was not commented out, but set to "info". Else you should point me to the correct line which where the comment should be removed. 3.) Edit /usr/lib/cups/filter/cupsomatic. The line "my $debug=0" to "my $debug=1". Changed this one as well. 4.) Try to print again. One change only: The printer put out an empty sheet of paper.. 5.) Send me the file /tmp/prnlog, and the output which appears in the error_log now. One thing to add: The print did now proceed according to "Jobs" (in the previous version I needed to cancel it all the time, though the printer was ready to print and jobs were accepted), but the Jobs log simply said "Print aborted". Here is the error_log file: Though the setting in /tmp are set to: drwxrwxrwt 11 root root 4096 Sep 19 19:28 ./ And the cupsomatic perl script looks like this now: my $debug=1; # Where to send debugging log output to if ($debug) { # Grotesquely unsecure; use for debugging only open LOG, "/tmp/prnlog"; $logh = *LOG; } else { $logh=*STDERR; } The prnlog file was not created. [Cooker] ld-linux.so.1 again
Hi! I did not find any answer to this in the mail archive, so I ask again: Where is ld-linux.so.1 ? This should belong to the libc package but it's not in there, so WordPerfect8 from 1998 (binary only), one of the better Word Processors which I need for daily work does no longer run. I'm using a maybe one or two weeks old cooker updated from 7.1. It used to work fine on 7.1 itself. I know that it was in the ld.so package, so I will be forced to install that one, until the issue is solved. Best Regards, Reinhard Katzmann -- E-Mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[Cooker] Some interesting (but weird) things with beta2
Just a few things. One is that this beta seems much more stable, to which I am very thankful. However, I think some of the services need some more (or better) descriptions. For example, ipop3 (has no description), cfd (I've never heard of this one before), and lvs (new to me too). I also noticed xinetd appears twice. One last thing on services: there are many services which do the same thing.. how do I know which one to choose? For example, sendmail and postfix.. xinetd on inetd.. do some things rely on one services and not the other? Root is getting some weird emails.. one is from Anacron.. subject Anacron job 'cron.daily': "DB2 problem...: missing or empty key value specified hash map "Alias0": unsafe map file /etc/aliases.db: Symbolic links not allowed..." This is repeated a few times in the same email and then finished off with: "slocate: this is not a valid slocate database: /var/lib/slocate/slocate.db" I'm also getting emails saying: "errors occured while rotating /var/log/mail/mail.warn stat of /var/log/mail.warn failed: No such file or directory" Another email is about servers/telnet: localhost. The long and the short of it is: localhost: problem connecting to "localhost", port 23: Connection refused." Now, I've disabled telnet in inetd.conf. Is this the problem? Lastly, I noticed something interesting when I tried to do a clean install. After selecting my partitions, I wanted to format /usr and / .. so I selected those. Upon reboot after installation, I noticed that all my previous files were there still. In other words, although it said formating, it didn't actual format. I tried this again using the format option in the partition section (i.e. the button that says format) and it didn't do anything. I had to do a rm -rf instead. It was quite odd. Is it my machine? Nothing else to report really, except that X picks a higher resolution than I would like every time, even though I select a lower one. This isn't new, as it happens in 7.1 as well, and is a quick fix once I boot up. JP
Re: [Cooker] Linux Mandrake 7.2 beta 2
This problem started to occur on 7.1 and was still present on the 7.2 beta 1. I expected that it would not re-occur with beta 2, but in spite of the selection of pretty faces for different users I can only log on to root. I cannot see how I could be setting up the user information differently. Even if I try to introduce a different user after the initial set-up process the problem remains. It is also a problem if I do a level 3 start and login from the keyboard. I would be very interested to know how to get round this. Bernard Brown John Triplett wrote: It sounds like your user account did not get setup properly. I am doing my school work right now, so I am in windows. Bernard

Re: [Cooker] Big printing problems / configuration: BJC-6000
Hi Till! I could not yet test the stuff, as I have a small downloading problem. With smb printing works fine at work, at home I still have to test it. Update to the newest versions: CUPS 22mdk, GhostScript 25mdk, CUPS-Drivers 13mdk wget -T 20 ftp://sunsite.uio.no/pub/unix/Linux/Mandrake-devel/cooker/Mandrake/RPMS/cups-drivers-0.3.6-13mdk.i586.rpm --10:04:48-- ftp://sunsite.uio.no:21/pub/unix/Linux/Mandrake-devel/cooker/Mandrake/RPMS/cups-drivers-0.3.6-13mdk.i586.rpm = `cups-drivers-0.3.6-13mdk.i586.rpm' Verbindungsaufbau zu sunsite.uio.no:21... verbunden! Keine solche Datei »cups-drivers-0.3.6-13mdk.i586.rpm«. (i.e. no such file...) it seems the cups-drivers still did not make it to the main mirror... Another point: I'm using ghostscript 6.0, is it useful to apply anything to this version ? I downloaded the SRPMS of ghostscript 5.5, so Ic ould create a specialised 6.0 version for my home mandrake.. Best regards Reinhard Katzmann -- E-Mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[Cooker] sawmill is crashed by using gnumeric
Follow these step to regenerate this bug. 1. use Mandrake 7.1 2. create new user $ useradd test1 -p '' 3. login into gnome/sawmill desktop as user test1 4. open gnumeric application 5. select some texts from some X terminals to copy that texts into X clipboard 6. click menu Edit-Paste in gnumeric application 7. The X system will then hang. Sawmill will hang and eat 99% cpu time.
