Re: [Cooker] Highpoint hpt 372/374 ata133/raid controller status with 9.0b1???
Andy Schmidt wrote: Hello, this is my firts message to cooker, i have the Highpoint hpt 372 ata133/raid controller integrated into my Abit mobo. Currently i have been running Mandrake 8.2, but it will kernel panic during initial hardware detection if this controller is enabled in BIOS.so i have taken the hdd's off of it and shut it off in BIOS and have been running off the regular IDE channels. ... So, what is the status of hpt 372/374 support in 9.0, is it being addressed?? I while back I saw some messages on the maillist saying that it was now recognized, but not supported, see the kernel change log: * Sat Mar 16 2002 Juan Quintela [EMAIL PROTECTED] 1-1mdk - dmi update to fix apm in Dell Inspirons 2500. - smbfs fix for Ooops. - mini ide update (ultra safe mode): * Release recognition of promise ide raid. * fix jiffies workaround things (ide-tape). * hpt37[24], don't oops if we find them * put another WD disk in the ide-dma black list. * fix Oops with hpt37x a lot of controllers. - 2.4.18-7mdk. Last week I had to open my machine and decided to take the opportunity to move my main drives from the ATA100 controller to the HPT controller. I knew it was not going to be pretty, since I use software raid1 for the root and lvm on top of a software raid0 for the other filesystems. I made all the necessary changes to the files involved, made the hw switch, and booted ... it was ugly! It booted, but when it tried to access the disks the thing started to give the kind of errors one get when a drive has bad sectors, etc. To make a long story short, I lost my raid structures, and was ready to recover from backup, but at the last minute I was able to repair it with mkraid. At first I thought the problem was related to hdparm optimizations, but I later check I had customized that so I should have worked fine. Now I think the problem was that the HPT37x driver is not yet ready for the 372 ... I think the only difference now is that it does not Oops at boot time, but is still not supported. -- Eugenio Diaz, BSEE/BSCE Linux Engineer [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Somehow I don't see how I could manage to setup a working LDAP server on the machine by first boot so that I can log in ;-) Could this be changed to be something sensible like ldap.domainname (since it already has the correct domainname). I am quite sure that ldap.domainname will not have exist if it doesn't run ldap, and adding an A or CNAME record if the name doesn't exist is less effort than setting ldap.domainname on a number of machines, for each installation. This is the only change I have to make to get LDAP accounts working, so kudos on the rest. Would it not be better for LDAP to pull up an SRV record of the form _ldap._tcp.your.domain.nameIN SRV 0 0 389 your.ldap.server in order to locate an LDAP server for the domain? This would be consistent with the way that Kerberos locates its servers (LDAP and Kerberos in Win2k also use SRV records). Michael
[Cooker] BETA2 -- Install report (promise, network config, cdrecord, rpm-db)
Hi People! I've just installed the second beta of Mandrake Linux 9.0 and there are some bugs I'd like to report. 1) Boot kernel (2.4.18-22) won't see the second HD (it's on a Promise FastTrak RAID controller...) and it worked fine since 8.0 so that I used hda+hde for my software RAID. Indeed when I connect hde+hdf (both disk to the RAID controller) kernel hangs, at least till version 8.2 (2.4.18), so that I have to build software-RAID with HDA (normal IDE controller) and HDE (ATA-RAID controller). But now installer just found HDA... 2) There's a typo in Network config, maybe for Italian only. The message ask: Track AUDIO card (useful for laptop)... should be track network card I suppose! ;o) [ Post-installation] 3) Installing CDRECORD-CDDA2WAV -- Group cdwriter does not exist, using ROOT! 4) While installing many RPM I get the following message (not always, maybe 8-10% of the time): cd /mnt/error : db4 error (-30988) from dbcursor -- c_get: DB_PAGE_NOTFOUND: Request page not found [not important...] 5) Fonts in KDE are very big in my opinion... but that's just estetic! 6) New RPMDRAKE really misses many many things: now source definition is a separate tool, and I cannot list things like Show only uninstalled package or, even better, Show updates only... Hope to have it back soon! =:) 6) Gcombust is still at version 0.1.47 and it even have a security bug... 7) I really miss OpenOffice... =:°° 8) Maybe some more KDE themes? Even in a separate package... 9) Netatalk (it's in main tree!) should be updated recompiled against latest GCC I suppose... That's all at the moment! Bye, Claudio -- Remote system is LINUX (Mandrake 9.0 beta 2)

I just went to the HPT web page ( http://www.highpoint-tech.com/372drivers_down.htm ) and found they now have OS drivers for the 372, so I guess those must have already been incorporated to the kernel ... [Cooker] Bug Report: Rocket Port Driver needs to be updated
Hi, The Comtrol RocketPort driver (1.14c) in Cooker is 9 releases old and does not work well with current hardware. (e.g. RocketPort/PCI) The module loads and works for the most part, but ports randomly lock up or sometimes pause for ~60 seconds and then start sending again. This caused me a lot of grief at a client site where I was upgrading to 8.2 from SCO OpenServer 5. The latest version of the driver (1.23) works fine and is available at: http://support.comtrol.com/download.asp or more specifically, here: ftp://ftp.comtrol.com/RPort/Drivers/ISA_PCI/Linux /V1_23/1800024D.tgz -Steve Bergman

[Cooker] Mandrake and Winmodems
Dear Cooker Team, I want to raise an issue with the cooker team regarding Winmodems. I recommend Mandrake to everyone I know. As such I get calls to help with installs all the time. These people are ALWAYS encouraged by me to either buy ML or join the club. They almost always do once they see how great ML is. I would say that as the premiere desktop distro, a concerted effort should be made to support winmodems when possible and include all available drivers in the distro along with the tools to autodetect them and install as appropriate. I would say that at least 70-80% of my installs run into a winmodem problem. A newbie has no clue how to go to linmodems.org and get drivers/install etc. When these winmodems are detected, the installer simply suggests the cryptic please visit linmodems.org for more information or something to that effect. Why are the available winmodem drivers not simply included in the distro?? This would be a major plus if Mandrake added this and it would put it even further ahead of the other desktop oriented distros. This one sticking point has always concerned me and as I run into this problem more and more I thought this feature would be EXTREMELY useful to myself and many others who use/recommend ML. Thank you ALL for your hard work and dedication to making the best Linux distro possible but please can we make some progress in this area for 9.0?? Kind Regards, Jason Greenwood

I will try to mess with bash and post a patch to turn it into a loop with a number of tries (10) for 'ip link set up' with 1 sec sleep in each. How 'bout this: for (( try=0; try10; try++)) do if [ $(ip link show $1 up) ]; then echo Link is UP break fi echo Link is DOWN, rising... ip link set $1 up /dev/null sleep 1 done It works but is bash specific. Are initscripts supposed to run under plain sh ?? If they are, then they are all broken. Try installing ash and linking it as /bin/sh instead of bash. Then, try and reboot. Good luck, you will have to reboot again with init=/bin/bash and relink bash as /bin/sh! IMHO, the scripts should either be fixed to work with any standard sh, or have their hashbang changed from #!/bin/sh to #!/bin/bash If not, there could be much optimization and clearing, because bash let you do many things not used in standard scripts (like the above ' x', instead of 'x 21' ) IMHO, use bash-isms, as long as the script calls bash, and not sh. [Cooker] 9.0 beta 2 : various problems
Fresh install on desktop machine (VIA KT266A, Athlon TB 1.4Go) 1. The plug-and-play detection for screen is very nice, but is wrong with me. I have a Iiyama Vision Master Pro 452, it is correctly recognized, but sets the vertical refresh to only 60Hz at 1280x960 or 1280x1024, whereas it can go up to 85Hz at these resolutions. If I choose that monitor in the list of vendors, it correctly sets the highest refresh rate. BTW, the new XFdrake is brilliant, but lacks a man page. 2. I have a usb mouse (Logitech Whell mouse optical), but it does not work because devfs does not create a /dev/usbmouse link. At each boot, I have to run mousedrake in console to have it working. 2. Where is the usb group ? I have trouble to use a digital camera with gtkam or digikam, because I can only use it as root. In mandrake 8.2, there was a usb group I could assign to my user to be able to use the camera. A ls /proc/bus/usb/001 shows that they belong to the group 43. I created a usb group with Linuxconf with the ID number 43, and added that group to my user name, but it did not work anyway. BTW, that would be nice if userdrake was able to manage the groups, like in Linuxconf. 3. urpmi hangs sometimes, but finishes its job after 3-4 minutes, very strange. Moreover, it can't open my CDROM like before (a CDR-W yamaha 4001t IDE on secondary master). It gives an error message. I have another DVDROM on secondary slave, that was used to install the distro, since it is faster. 3bis. That would be nice if it was possible to change the CDROM drive to use for urpmi. I know it is possible to edit the urpm config file, but this would be nice if it was possible from the command line or the gui. 4. The new rpmdrake is not really my taste. I prefered the previous one, with everything integrated : sources, install/remove, update. Moreover, there is no search by file name anymore. Of course, there is the line command with urpmf, but I think that the GUI was nice. Now it is too limited, even for newbies. Maybe it would be possible to switch between the old one and the new simplified version ? 5. I have troubles to compile some softwares by myself, like digikam-0.5, kiofoto3-0.3.1 or gtkam-0.1.9. I obtain a syntax error. Is this a problem with the new gcc3.2 compiler ? However, mplayer compiles correctly. Otherwise, things work fine. Eric

It is not pretty, but it gets the job done. I don't use the package. I was just concerned about what is the proper behaviour and consistency of the distro ... especially now with the upcomming release. [Cooker] Mandrake 9.0 on a Toshiba satellite pro 4290
I just tried to install Mandrake 9.0 on my satellite pro 4290. There are 2 problems : 1-) Xfree3.3.6 works only with an addon (I founded it at : http://gonzalez.federico.free.fr/neo/info/satellitepro4290.html) 2-) Xircom card isn't recognized under. Otherwise, it works fine, at my newbees' level !

[Cooker] Another rpmdrake problem
After performing a urpmi.update, running rpmdrake and selecting by presense, I select the packages, download, and install them via rpmdrake. If I download the .src.rpm and build them myself (I usually specify --target=athlon), rpmdrake will not show them as being installed. Trying to install them again via rpmdrake will result in conflicts. I think the new rpmdrake has a lot of potential to overcome the older version. Rather than having two different version of it as some have suggested, just add an advanced switch for usuages not for your normal user. Just a recommendation. Ken -- Kenton A.
