for the aim of bugzilla, e.g. track fix bugs, it's now in a

Maybe there should be a someone has had a look at this bug status for
bugs that developers do look at but don't want to officially commit to ?

IMO it's not needed. With the mail interface, it's very easy for
us to comment on it, if we want to.

I like GNOME's NEEDMOREINFO status. It nicely tells the reporter that
their bug report wasn't all it could be, and lets the package maintainer
ignore the bug until they do get more info.

VERY GOOD IDEA...

Warly, any hope to add this on our bugzilla ?

I have found that using Helvetica looks substantially better than Luxi
Sans, but
it would be better to have anti-aliasing working ...
Which Helvetica? Have you tried to set FontScaling to 110%?

- Edit ~/.openoffice.conf and add FONT_SCALING=AUTO
- Edi /usr/bin/ooffice and s/100/$scale/ in FontScaling node
- Start OOo the normal way

[Cooker] vncserver doesn't work after 9.1rc1 to 9.1rc2 upgrade

2003-03-08 Thread Bob Brickey
I tried repeatedly to submit this to Bugzilla, but there were errors each
time. I am posting it here, because I couldn't find it in the database
afterward.

vncserver worked fine in rc1. After upgrading to rc2:

1) Only a solid blue screen is displayed in a remote
tightvnc-1.2.8_x86_viewer if vncserver is started from Mandrake Control
Center. The mouse pointer is an arrow.

2) However, if vncserver is started from the command line, instead of from
the MCC, the KDE desktop graphic is displayed remotely, but without icons,
menu, or task bar. The mouse pointer toggles between a stopwatch and an
arrow every second or two.

vncserver is assigned to use Display 1. From some experimenting I have
done, I think the problem may be related to using a Display 0, but I am
not sure of that.

Argh. ANOTHER broken kernel changelog. Is it so hard to get right?! Does
anyone know what's actually *IN* 11mdk and this new 13mdk? I sure
haven't been able to find out...

You can see every spec file in Mandrake cvs (eg via cvsweb):
http://cvs.mandrakesoft.com/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/SPECS/kernel/

For example, in:
http://cvs.mandrakesoft.com/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/SPECS/kernel/kernel-2.4.spec?rev=1.276content-type=text/x-cvsweb-markup

I see:

- alsa 0.9.0rc8a.
- fix for LSB testing

So maybe someone with a SBLive! can test this?

BTW, you can make life easier for yourself by making a mozilla keyword
bookmark, using
http://cvs.mandrakesoft.com/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/SPECS/%s as the url. If you
give it a keywork specs, then entering specs kernel will take you
there. This should work in Konqueror, and slightly differently in Galeon.
Of course, while you are about it, add on for contrib-specs, bugzilla and
rpmmon.

from R100 to R300 and now also R350 with Radeon 9800. To me on Radeon 7500
mobility of cooker 4.3.0 works fine with full DRI 3D acceleration
(apart a small problem at 1600x1200x24, but #2634), and was working since
8.2.

worth correcting? I have a Radeon VE that works flawlessly on install
with Red Hat 8.0. It is a screaming mess on install with Mandrake 9.0
and still is not working with Cooker which is just about ready to
release. Problems with ATI and nVidea products. Only the two most
popular video cards on the market.

.. And the two that prefer to make proprietary drivers rather than, if they
want the speed and quality, making their work fully open..

Have you tried the software proprietare drivers from ATI on it? I have to run
NVidia's software proprietare drivers because I am running dual video out on
that card, and the software libre drivers don't work.

I'd be extremely surprised if Mdk could or even would choose to put the
software proprietare drivers on the freely downloadable disks. It's possible
AFAIK the ATI 2.5.1 closed drivers, right now needed for 3D on ATI 9500/9700,
compiles but doesn't work on current cooker. Furthermore they are built on top
of and old XFree 4.2.X.

they might put it on the extra software proprietare disks they have in the
commercial distrib versions, but obviously, that's not going to be in the
main code base. You basically have to go d/l the software proprietare from
yep, apart licenses, we don't place in main, things for which there aren't
sources. AFAIK remember latest one was netscape 4.79.
For instance NVidia drivers contains libGLcore.so.1.0.4141 binary only
libraries, NVidia-kernel contains some sources, but the nv-kernel.o is
binary only. Ditto for winmodems (lt, conexant), etc.: they have glue
.C code, but often a binary only object file.

the manufacturer's site yourself, and install it yourself. Of course, keep
in mind that if ATI is like Nvidia in that regard, the ABI to the kernel is
what they must use, and that changes with each version. Thus, there are
limited kernel matches, one each for standard and enterprise kernel for each
official release, but nothing for each cooker kernel update, or if you
and not even for official kernel updates.

compile your own kernel. For those, you have to get the SRPM or tarballs and
compile the kernel wrapper interface to the proprietary binary module
yourself, so it matches the kernel you have deployed.

Despite the additional cost for Matrox cards in particular based on their 3D
performance (they tend to be good 2D performers, but not so good @ 3D), I'm
seriously considering getting only them from now on.. Well, either that, or
Matrox G450/G550 are well supported on 3D, although they even have
a closed source module (not included in XFree86, but supported changing
some compilation %define flag in the SPEC file): the HALLib.
SiS/Via/whatever gpu/chipset cards, that have software libre drivers that
exploit the full power of the card, low tho that might be, as at least then
I'm not blowing $$ on features I can't use w/o serious hassle on Linux, due
to their software proprietare policies.
Matrox would have good 3D performance on Parhelia, but they don't
release even closed source drivers for it.
(I should mention that in NVidia's case at least, they claim the reason they
don't fully support software libre drivers is that they have licensed
intellectual property from other holders, and those licenses don't allow them
to go the software libre route. That's a potentially valid arguement, but
seems things got from Silicon Graphics per libGL or proprietary texture
compression techniques.

IMO, I'd rather simply do w/o those features then, and use a card a bit more
plain jane, if necessary. Yes, it WILL affect my purchasing decisions from
here on out. The reason I have the Nvidia now is because I got it b4 I
switched to Linux, and while I checked that drivers were available for Linux
as I was thinking about switching, I didn't realize there was this particular
angle of it to worry about until I switched, and by then I already had the
card.)

Consider also that NVidia drivers contains modules built with obsolete
compilers like egcs 1.1.2 (see for instance libGLcore.so.1.0.4191)
that any distribution no longer uses since two years...
Bye.
Giuseppe.

The KDE default fonts look much better now (thanks Laurent!), but the kdm fonts,
and some Konqueror fonts still need to be adjusted. Please ensure that Helvetica
and other non-antialiasing fonts are replaced in every place where anti-aliasing
works:

KDM: Replace Charter (greeting font) with Sans (24pt?)
KDM: Replace Helvetica (fail font) with something like Luxi Serif (11pt?)
KDM: Replace Helvetica (standard) with Sans (11pt?)

In the KDE Help Center, Helvetica is used all over, but I see no place to set
this. Would be nice to have an anti-aliased font here too (Sans?).

Konqueror: Replace Times (Serif font) with Serif
Konqueror: Replace Helvetica (Sans font) with Sans

[Cooker] [Bug 1984] [drakxtools] Partition lock when installing windows fonts (NTFS partition running XP)

2003-03-08 Thread bgmilne
http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1984

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-03-08 09:32 ---
You do not need to reinstall to get X back, try:

# service dm restart

But you may have two bugs here, firstly bug 427 (importing fonts from NTFS,
which has a fix in progress), and then your loss of X.

Did you run drakboot (Mandrake Control Center-Boot) at all? It seems to default
to not use X, so if you click OK, you will run in console mode on next boot.

In the meantime, just check Start graphical system at boot every time you run
drakboot and hit OK.

I went to /etc/fonts/fonts.conf and added the line

dir/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/drakfont/ttf/dir

Then all the fonts I added would show up properly. Perhaps a directory higher
up the tree would have worked - I didn't play around with that.

Well, I don't think that will help since the rescue kernel boots with

complain can't open /lib/modules/2.4.21-0.11mdkBOOT/modules.dep for

Something is corrupted somewhere but still dunno what :( I also did try
re-install w/ reiserfs (instead of ext3). It will continue to boot using

The weird thing though if I install on vmware, it works fine. Thanks

The artsd process cannot be lanched with real-time priority (nice level always
at 0 even if you set real-time in the KDE config module). The consequence is
that the sound is cut and hashed when you move a window, open a program, or
anything that use CPU ressources (even if not 100% of your CPU is used - I have
this problem on a PIII866 with 256Mo RAM...)

I also add an explicit conflict between MySQL and MySQL-Max, which can hardly be

Cooker, I just did choose MySQL-Max as first thing to update), but as far as the
requires look like, it would be even possible to install MySQL-Max without
having any MySQL base package installed, but the mysql-max server needs at least
the translation file, which is in the base package. Btw, I am referring only to
the above error, because I am currently not in the mood to try MySQL-Max alone
and screw up my install completely. ;-)

If Requires is not the Right Way to solve this, ignore this part (I am only
basically familiar with RPM packaging) and do it in whatever is the Right Way.

For completness the requires: rpm -qp --requires MySQL-Max-4.0.9-1mdk.i586.rpm

Does switching to sawfish (killall metacity sawfish) fix the behaviour ?

BTW, you should have cc: me or assigned this bug to metacity, not QT..

Ok, this is not so simple to explain, so please bear with me as this is a real
problem.

If a KDE application contains a pop-up Qt QMessageBox object, this pop-up shows
up correctly in KDE, but freezes X under GNOME.

I attach a very simple KDE app containing an about button, that should trigger
an about dialog. Run it under GNOME and click on the button (close any pending
task before and be prepared to hit the backspace key).

The same app written as a pure QT application does not exhibit the problem.

Problem is in the NTFS driver. Fix in progress, see bug 427. In the meantime,
you can install the fonts by manually copying them to /tmp first.

I have some ideas about this wiki, I guess here is the best place to discuss

I've done some additionnal tests...

What is strange for me is that under kde and icewm the widget style is not the
same as under gnome. Under gnome FreeCiv has the look and feel of Mandrake
Galaxy theme for the widget, but under kde or icewm the widget have the look and
feel of standard gtk (by stantard I mean old one, with grey and square
button). Note that on kde I've set the Galaxy theme for the widget and all other
kde application are Galaxy... I suppose it is normal because gnome is based on
gtk ...

I've tried tochange the theme under gnome but it changes nothing.

Do you have tried freeciv under gnome 2.2.0 ? do you have the same problem ?

Maybe in front of password typing add a warning like

BE CAREFUL. THAT'S A ONE-SHOT PASSWORD TYPING.
IN CASE OF WRONG TYPING, YOU WILL BE BLOCKED IN FEW STEPS,
AND YOU WILL NEED TO RESTART INSTALLATION.

Many thanks.

Best regards.

Good luck.

PS (Not for this bug, but concerning install)

a) (Seriously) I thing that neutral selection for language
(America,Africa,Europe...)
is better than actual ENGLISH AMERICA FIRST.
Neutral selection mean all geographical areas closed like actual Europe.

b) (More funny) Maybe add a worldwide area for esperanto and equivalent.

dir/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/drakfont/ttf/dir

Then all the fonts I added would show up properly. Perhaps a directory higher
up the tree would have worked - I didn't play around with that.

The theme problem is normal :

Setting theme in GNOME is only applied when running GNOME.
Under KDE, if you choose Galaxy KDE theme, Galaxy will be used by GTK (this fix
is the upload queue)
Under other WM, you have to specify your theme in ~/.gtkrc and ~/.gtkrc-2.0

Everything works fine under sawfish, good catch!

I this time got an error message:

Window manager warning: Window 0xe1 (Qt test)
sets SM_CLIENT_ID on itself, instead of on the WM_CLIENT_LEADER window
as specified in the ICCCM.

If you can remember #666, I first entered this problem under GNOME or
Metacity, but you wrote it was a qt bug ;) The designer problem is now
'fixed' but the dialog problem remains.

Here is the pb entry for Metacity, with a full debug log:

http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=106217

Bon courage pour la dernière ligne droite.

Unfortunately I cannot access the log or kernel messages by pressing Alt-F3 or

pressed.

Compaq EVO N1015v has AMD Athlon Mobile XP 1500+, 256 Mb of RAM, ATI Mobility U1

recognizes as Realtek RTL8139 C+), and Winmodem (Conexant Intl HSFi V92 Mini
PCI). I have also 3Com wireless card 3CRWE62092A connected to PCMCIA slot. It
does not seem to help if I remove PCMCIA card before the installation.

I tried to install both, in expert and in normal mode, but it does not seem to
make any difference.

I also tried to install Mandrake Linux 9.1 beta 3 from the same cd to my desktop
PC, and it seems to go just fine (in that sense, there should not be anything
wrong on the installation cd).

The artsd process cannot be lanched with real-time priority (nice level always
at 0 even if you set real-time in the KDE config module). The consequence is
that the sound is cut and hashed when you move a window, open a program, or
anything that use CPU ressources (even if not 100% of your CPU is used - I have

My PC is a Gericom Commander P4 1.8GHz laptop, purchased 4 month ago. When I
installed 9.1 RC1 as an upgrade, the install detected the soundchip to be
VIA8233 instead of the really present CMOS version VIA82C33. The same happened
minutes ago when trying RC2
This is roughly compatible but results in strong static-like noise superposed to
the sound output when playing numeric samples (as in .WAV, .MP3 etc...).
If I manually switch (using harddrake) to the VIA82CXX driver, and then restart
the X server, the problem is gone. I'm working in the HW bussiness so I quicly
found out, but for non-tech users this could be less easy to guess.

PhB

I found what causes it by fiddling with the boot parameters (I have same
problem). You need the enterprise kernel anyway for 1024MB as the distro one
doesn't support so much memory. The 12mdk enterprise kernel doesn't blink those
lights on keyboard anymore, but leaves them on. Screen still black and dead
frozen. It boots ok only if you remove the vga=788 line from lilo.conf, run
lilo and then boot.

I have no clue whatsoever why the vga=788 works with 512MB but with 1024MB of
ram it doesn't. :/
I have a ASUS A7V8X mobo and a Radeon 9700 Pro videocard. 2 PC333 mem modules
of 512MB at CL 2.5.

[Cooker] [Bug 2965] [arts] No real-time priority for sound process

artswrapper does not install as suid root, which I believe is on purpose in
mdk. kde/arts team intended for artswrapper to run suid root to enable
real-time processing, but this is also a security risk. I think this is not
a bug but a feature.

When i install Cooker, i choose Norwegian Keyboard layout. But later, when the
settings are summarised, the setting appear to be some kind of English or US
keyboard. I try to change to norwegian keyboard again, but my changes are always
ignored.

 Workaround:

After the installtaion, when the system is running, you can change keyboard
layout in drakconf and then configure your X server again. And you have to pray
to God that your root password is not corrupt.

Curcomstances:

I did an installation of current Cooker yesterday friday 7th, from ftp:
//sunsite.uio.no/linux/Mandrake/Mandrake-devel/cooker/i586. The installation was
done from scratch on two new PCs. I chose English Language and norwegian
keyboard. The installation was done in text modus. The graphical modus did not
work: A png file was not found, and in graphical modus, the installation program
refused to install the packages.

I use an Ethernet Realtek 8139 to connect to the internet via a forwarding PC
running Win2000, connected via ADSL. Under Mandrake 8.2, my network was fine,
but since I got into 9.1RC2 the connection sometimes crashes, and I can't make
it work any more, using drakconnect or typing /etc/init.d/network restart as root...

I believe it happens when I'm downloading lots of data, e.g. via FTP, and it
seems that the speed is too fast, therefore the connection is lost. I can't
explain why, I'm not a guru ;)

Thanks
