me thinks, as i said :-)

Instead of telling we need one, how about telling us why?

because since RC2 ive downloaded around 1GB of Cooker changes including 3 kernels,
urpmi --auto-select is not the same as during a clean install.

because yesterday I found 2 bugs more,

1. after adding a disk with diskdrake, I rebooted my machine, the disk had a wrong
superblock and i was asked to supply my root password to repair, which I did, and then
e2fsck was suppose to start but the wrong parameteres was parsed to it, and serveral
other errors was thrown in my face.

2. when during a clean shutdown from gnome, the machine ended up with a ;2R on the
screen instead of a nice shutdown, I hit return and got a prompt and did a init 0
which worked fine, I dont know i it is related but I had hit ctrl/alt 1 and logged
in but not logged out.

I will try to reproduce the errors tonight and do a Bug report,

btw. bugzilla is F slow which makes error reporting a pain.

why not releas a RC3, and if no showstoppers are found it can be final, otherwise do a
final with minor corrections from RC3!

just my 2 cents

/Glen
ps. 9.2 is still the best Mandrake ever.

I do not think so, because it still need to be tested. And, if verisign
decide to react and change something, this patch will be useless.

So, i really prefer to have package avaliable on oden website, for
people really intested by the patch than having a untested patch by

Even if it is small, it can break.

An important infrastructure item as getting updates does not work at

If not the mechanism to correct errors is not working, at least not as

I have 2 reasons why a RC3 would be necessary:

bug #5372: pcmcia hangs at startup
bug #5669: network configuration fails with dhcp during installation, so
updates cannot be installed.

The latter bug has a very detailed description, I'm sure it's a real bug and
the information should be enough to fix it.

It still needs to be tested, though, that's why a RC3 would be necessary.

Considering the comments I've seen on this issue I guess Mandrake should
release a RC3 providing they can postponed final until late September.
If for commercial reasons they have to release ~22/9 then there will be
no RC3 I'm affraid...

I run gnome session and I tried to lock the screen from my computer and
selected the appropriate icon from the main menu. But locking screen did not
start and I did not even get any warning or error message boxes explaining that
it can not be done.

First I thought that the menu was there even thought I did not have xscreensaver
installed but

   rpm -qa | grep xscree
   xscreensaver-4.12-1mdk

shows that it is. Then I remembered that I have disapled screensaver in the
gnome configuration menu. I activated screensaver and tried again to lock the
screen but still nothing happened.

After logging the user away from the gnome session and logging in again I was
able to lock the screen.

I think that user should be able to lock the screen even if he do not want to
start screensaver after certain period.

With cooker the past couple of days neither apmd or acpi seem to be installed by

Kind of ugly for laptop users.

[Cooker] Incredible Shrinking gnome-terminal?

2003-09-18 Thread Adam Williamson
This is a rather odd one...has anyone else noticed their gnome-terminal
shrinking in the last month or so? It's a very vague problem I know, but
several times I've noticed my terminal window looks a bit small, clicked
the drag handles and found it at about 76x20 size, instead of the 80x24
it started out as and to which I resize it again. The most obvious
side-effect of this problem is that urpmi's output gets a little broken
- it keeps drawing new lines, so I get output like this:

Aha, I haven't followed this since back then, nice to see you picked it up.
I tried it briefly at home but it segfaulted, maybe because I was not
running the proper kernel at the time?

well the kernel patch and the gradm both needs to be the same version...
or they will most likely not work... since they interact...

I did plan to test and correct them before I add them to the i586
package, so I left them only in the SRPM...
but since current kernel-secure is broken, I need to fix that one
  first...

I hope to solve both today...

Ohh, a lot of work there...

Yeah...

BTW. is the sysctl stuff fixed now or is still on by default in the secure
kernel? Well..., maybe a stupid question..., otherwise we wouldn't have to
see the secure kernel package I guess...

According to the current grsec code it checks for every option in sysctl,
and if they are not disabled, or if they does not exist at all in sysctl,
the rules will be active (according to the way the kernel is compiled)

(i tried knoppix, because there is win2k all over the harddisk, but the problem

lspci tells me that the irq is set to 0. I tried setting it with setpci -s
02:05.2 interrupt_line=9. (on windows, it works on int 9). but running lspci
after that tells me again that it is set to 0.

Both KDE and GNOME seem to be having trouble with Galaxy tightvnc-server-1.2.7-2. It
seems to be focused on Galaxy-KDE as explained later.

Fluxbox works just fine, just GNOME and KDE have exhibited issues.

KDE loads the wallpaper and then various components seem to go flashing by like a grey
bar where the kicker is supposed to be. Eventually ending up with a screen shot like
this.

http://www.gkmweb.com/images/9.1-KDE_vnc.jpg

The desktop keeps flashing periodically.

GNOME has a similar behavior in that it flashes, but the desktop seems to load.
Occasionally after one of the flashes, an error message pops up a dialogue box that
says KDesktop error. Sorry, i was not able to capture it.

I thought maybe the Galaxy theme had something to do with it, so I switched KDE to the
Keramik theme, and it still exhibited this behavior, although the the error message
and the flashing stopped occurring when GNOME was running. So maybe it does belong to
Galaxy, and that led me to post it here as a KDE-Galaxy bug.

vnc logs have nothing interesting in them and the system logs are equally bare on this
issue.

What else can I do to help troubleshoot?

What did it used to say? rpmsync is just cooksync (the old link) with command-line
argument support.

It shouldn't say Use fmirror or rsync to create a local mirror and keep it up to
date. Certainly it doesn't make a difference how you create the mirror (although
rpmsync can handle that too), but definitely rpmsync should be used to keep it up to
date. The default settings in the script have it set to sync from uninett, and
there's a README that comes with the package explaning how to set it up for Cooker (in
which case you'd only need to change the remote mirror possibly and the local path).

[Cooker] [Bug 5690] [Installation] ADSL Sagem F@st 800 not detected and not installed

2003-09-18 Thread [dchaumette]
http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5690

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-18-09 10:11 ---
The point is that your modem isn't recognized as a typical Sagem Fast 800.
Your modem is known as :

   * 'Unknown|ADSL-USB Modem [Communications|ATM Networking]
  (vendor:1110 device:9021)

when we espect to find :

   * 'Analog Devices Inc.|USB ADSL modem [Communications|ATM
Networking] (vendor:1110 device:900f)'

It's not in our usbtable, if it's a true Sagem Fast 800 then it's a new
revision and we'll have to add it in our base.

Try to add this line in /usr/share/ldetect-lst/usbtable
0x1110 0x9021 adiusbadslAnalog Devices Inc.|USB ADSL modem

or wait for a new ldetect-lst.

After installation, the network tool doesn't detect it too, whereas I can see it in
hard-drake.

It was not detected in Mandrake 9.1 either, but an installation of the eagle driver
1.04 did make it work perfectly under 9.1

Even when manually selected, it doesn't work. The modem isn't even trying to

Could you file a bugreport on bugzilla?
Make sure to have the latest packages in cooker, and tell what hardware you
have, and what the output is of sane-find-scanner and scanimage -L.
Also, is it a scsi, usb or parport scanner?

[Cooker] urpmi.update weirdness

2003-09-18 Thread Udo Rader
hi,

as many others I have a local cooker mirror here is updated frequently via
troels.rsync.

For a couple of days (weeks?) now I find urpmi.update reading all headers
of all files in my cooker repository over and over again no matter if they
have updated or not, resulting in quite long processing times.

Not too much of a problem, but I thought previously uprmi.update would
only process the changed (timestamp?) files? Or am I missing something
here?

happy hacking

My PC is a Gericom Commander P4 1.8GHz laptop, purchased 4 month ago. When I
installed 9.1 RC1 as an upgrade, the install detected the soundchip to be
VIA8233 instead of the really present CMOS version VIA82C33. The same happened
minutes ago when trying RC2
This is roughly compatible but results in strong static-like noise superposed to
the sound output when playing numeric samples (as in .WAV, .MP3 etc...).
If I manually switch (using harddrake) to the VIA82CXX driver, and then restart
the X server, the problem is gone. I'm working in the HW bussiness so I quicly
found out, but for non-tech users this could be less easy to guess.

I think that user should be able to lock the screen even if he do not want to

sure, but testing is easier with a good iso form me and for newbies that
test the distro on many hardware.

There's really a problem. Having fixed date is bad or else they should
add 1 or 2 weeks more just in case. For example instead of saying 22/09,
they could say 06/10. They could have time to release an RC3 and may

ok the bug really is:
- if both sound alsa services are enabled, we'll rely on aumix to restore
mixer settings
- if only alsa service is enabled, alsa service rely on alsactl

could you try the above patch?

the attached patch solves the problem, at least for me, once the correct settings
have been done with alsamixer.

That sounds fine. Just so long as it's accessible from the menu, so it's

Yep, new version of userdrake solved the problem. It was really bound to
deleting groups and as far as I could backtrace it was setup 2.4-1 what when
just updating deleted (oops, user must be careful!) customized group structure
and introduced something that caused conflict with userdrake.

add -DMODVERSIONS -include /usr/src/linux/include/linux/modversions.h in
Makefile to use it with your current kernel. Also you need too install
kernel-source with same version that currently running.

compilant with ACPI specification, so to solve your problem if your
machine don't boot with ACPI, simply remove acpi acpid packages

The voicemail/answering machine I have running, based on vgetty on my mandrake

in my case), suddenly started failing with a message saying Illegal sample rate :

09/17 17:33:55 yS0 reading generic configuration from config file /etc/mget

The last mgetty/vgetty release didn't backport the security patches, so mdk9.0
was forced to update from 1.1.28 to vgetty 1.1.30, but, after some digging, that
wasn't the problem.

I tracked the fault back to a change to 'record.c' in libvoice, where default
arguments to set_compression are passed in without initialisation.

In stock vgetty, the arguments are passed in as members of a structure (which
has been initialised to all zeros), but Patch12
(mgetty-1.1.28-64bit-fixes.patch) replaces the actual structure members with new
local variables, and then copies the results into the structure afterwards. This
breaks because the local variables are not initialised (to zero) before
set_compression is called.

According to the changelog, this is a mandrake localisation:

* Thu Nov 28 2002 Gwenole Beauchesne [EMAIL PROTECTED] 1.1.28-3mdk
- Temporarily leave mgetty+sendfax data in %{_prefix}/lib, will likely
have to be moved to %{_datadir}/mgetty+sendfax/
- Patch10: Welcome it to wonderful x86-64 world
- Patch11: Add missing includes, not critical but saner
- Patch12: Minor 64-bit fixes, probably better to fix set_compression()

so there's no point me reporting this upstream - it needs to be fixed in the
mgetty rpm build. Here's the one line change to the patch that fixed it for me:

Patch for mgetty-1.1.28-64bit-fixes.patch: (needs refactoring, of course):

*** mgetty-1.1.28-64bit-fixes.patch.old 2003-09-17 19:43:09.0 +1000
--- mgetty-1.1.28-64bit-fixes.patch 2003-09-17 19:43:27.0 +1000
***
*** 4,10
int result;
rmd_header header;
int bits;
! + int compression, speed;

lprintf(L_MESG, recording voice file %s, name);

--- 4,10
int result;
rmd_header header;
int bits;
! + int compression=0, speed=0;

lprintf(L_MESG, recording voice file %s, name);

I.E. just patch the patch to initialise the variables. This then 'works for me'.

This certainly needs fixing for 9.2+, but I suspect it should really be
re-issued as an errata for 9.0 9.1 as well, as it has killed functionality
that was in the original release, and effectively prevents any voice
applications based on vgetty (i.e. most of them) from working (at least for any
of the hardware modules that rely on their parameters being initialised).

I've got a sb live audigy player and 9.2rc2.
On 9.1, everything runs really really *perfect* (for linux) with the alsa
emu10k1 driver for my audigy. The other driver made problems (I'm using the
digital out).
On 9.2rc2 harddrake did not want me to use emu10k1 - I could select it in
sounddrake, and it also was saved in /etc/modules.conf, but on reboot it still
loaded the silly audigy driver and I had no sound ;(

Now I've disabled the harddrake service - now it doesn't touch my modules.conf
any more and I'm happy with the best sound ever provided by the ALSA emu10k1 -
I'd be happy if you could make this the standard driver - or at least repair
this annoying sounddrake / harddrake behaviour.

Thank you very much!

the initrd.img and vmlinuz symlinks in /boot points to the 2.6 kernel:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 29 syys 8 2003 initrd.img
-initrd-2.6.0-0.test4.3mdk.img
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 26 syys 8 2003 vmlinuz
-vmlinuz-2.6.0-0.test4.3mdk

This is _bad_ since the lilo options linux, linux-nonfb and failsafe all use:
image=/boot/vmlinuz
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
as their kernel choice...

This will lead to users trying to fix their broken systems most likely
ending up with more problems, since without they knowing it, they will
be booting into an 2.6 test-kernel :-(

And this is definately an installer bug since all contrib kernels
are using -L parameter with /sbin/installkernel, and installing
a 2.6 kernel _after_ a newly installed system has been rebooted into,
won't trigger this behaviour

I synchronized with the cooker mirrors yesterday, created a new user, logged
into X as that user and went through the drakfirsttime menus.

I was offered to enter my mandrakeclub information, but was also told that I
need to log in as root in order for that information to be added to my urpmi setup.

Fair enough, only root can modify the urpmi setup, but:

1) We don't want to encourage users to log into X as root. We can, however,
prompt them for the root password.
2) With mdkkdm, which is the default dm now, there is no way for users to log
into X as root!

In other words, in the default setup, the mandrakeclub registration dialog
cannot achieve its goal due to lack of root priviledges!

NB: It is quite confusing to see this wonderful feature greyed, without any

Perhaps you need to tell the user what to do in order to be able to use the

Above the greyed theme config, you could display something like In order to use
themes at boot, you need to use a video mode with frame buffer at boot, you can
set this in the advanced settings of the boot manager.

Hi,

When installing drm-kernel RPM on a 2.4.22-7mm.1mdk kernel cooker, it complain
about :
installation de drm-kernel-1.100.0.10-3mdk.i586.rpm
Préparation... ##

mv: ne peut évaluer `/lib/modules/2.4.22-7mm.1mdk/kernel/drivers/char/atidrm/*':

In the RPM info, I read :
Fichiers :
/lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdkenterprise/kernel/drivers/char/atidrm/r128.o.gz
/lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdkenterprise/kernel/drivers/char/atidrm/radeon.o.gz

Is this RPM dependent from 2.4.19-16mdkenterprise kernel ?

What did it used to say? rpmsync is just cooksync (the old link) with
 command-line argument support.

It said the same thing. I just put in the lines To install the rpmsync
utility for Cooker: urpmi rpmsync instead of the link to your file.

It shouldn't say Use fmirror or rsync to create a local mirror and keep
it up to date. Certainly it doesn't make a difference how you create the
mirror (although rpmsync can handle that too), but definitely rpmsync
should
be used to keep it up to date. The default settings in the script have it
set to sync from uninett, and there's a README that comes with the package
explaning how to set it up for Cooker (in which case you'd only need to
change the remote mirror possibly and the local path).

If you've (or anyone, per my original call for comments) got suggestions for
the text that should go in there instead, I'm all ears. I didn't write the
page, I just act as a sort of self-appointed librarian.

I've got no experience with mirroring, and I didn't want to pollute the page
with something I made up. Things that I can't write about intelligently, I
don't write about at all. :)
