[Cooker] [acpi] acpi buttons function incorrectly
I have edited my /etc/acpi/events/power file so that whenever I press my power button it will initiate a system suspend; however, this causes the following problems: 1. The function only activates once; if I recover the system and then press the button again later, nothing will happen. This appears to have something to do with the software suspend because if I manually call a software suspend and later call the function with a button press, nothing will happen (the system will not suspend). 2. Activating the software suspend with the button press seems to screw up other system services. If I manually enter into suspend with "pmsuspend", then the system does a complete recovery after its inactivity (well, the sound never comes back, but that isn't much of a concern at the moment); however, if the power button calls the function "pmsuspend", then the system services appear to get confused. If I call the same script from acpi (by configuring my power button to call the script), then the script never seems to terminate -- it just hangs indefinitely. So, now I think it's something quirky with the acpi power button -- it seems to call its action once but never exits the call. [Cooker] PCMCIA problem in suspend scripts?
I have configured my power button to initiate the /usr/sbin/pmsuspend script when pressed. It will hang for about a minute until it realizes that PCMCIA isn't shutting down, and then the system forces a killall and shuts down. If I force a suspend with "echo 4 > /proc/acpi/sleep" , then the cardmgr comes back just fine (although, other services are out, but that makes sense). You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg Once again, I want to reiterate that I know for a fact that this problem did not exist in Mandrake 8.0. If anyone has any idea why this problem formed between 8.0 and 8.2 (I never tested 8.1), that would be great. As for now, I'm going to do more research into the problem -- Chao From: Adam Williamson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [Cooker] VAIO support Date: 25 Jan 2003 20:09:17 + On Sat, 2003-01-25 at 17:06, B Lauber wrote: > Sony claims that VAIO systems are not designed for Linux, but I know for a > fact that my system worked just fine w/ Mandrake 8.0. ACPI works very well on my C1XD; suspend doesn't seem to work, however. (At least not with "cat 3 > /proc/acpi/sleep", which is the only method I've heard of to invoke a suspend under ACPI. -- adamw Sorry, I don't think I was clear last time. It's not that there is no APM support for VAIO -- it's that it's broken. When the system recovers from a suspend, everything will lock after 3-5 seconds (before this, the keyboard and mouse will work perfectly.) I have included the writup of my syslog that I promised. [Cooker] VAIO support
Sony claims that VAIO systems are not designed for Linux, but I know for a fact that my system worked just fine w/ Mandrake 8.0. If I can see anything in 9.1, I would like to see a modification for APM so that my system is able to suspend again. Here's what I know as of now: the confusion that causes the system to lock has something to do w/ the keyboard and the system's fan (I have a battery that causes the fan to studder at times; whenever it studders, the keyboard studders as well. Furthermore, when the system recovers from a suspend, it will work for about 5 seconds until the fan reactivates.). My guess is that the keyboard is wrongly detected and registered because between Mandrake versions 8.0 and 8.2 it has lost support for the windows keys (in 8.0, pushing the windows key would make the K menu pop up). I will have more information soon -- I'm going to put 8.0 back onto my system and check the irq's of the keyboard and such. P.S. For any of you that have a VAIO, try suspending during a system startup (not returning from a suspend, but a fresh boot). You'll see that the system works just fine throughout the entirety of the booting process until it gets to something about initializing the X-window system. Next time I write, I will include all the specific error messages and such that I can. _ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus
[Cooker] Interface suggestions
I just thought of two things I want to put on my wishlist for 9.1: 1. Additional themes for Gnome and KDE. There needs to be a little more variety in the styles -- something fun, something professional, etc. 2. A Gnome applet / KDE equivalent that notifies you when there are updates for Mandrake. The e-mail system is nice, but I saw that Red Hat applet one day and was hooked. _ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus
