I don't think I can at this time because it would require me to reinstall

On my laptop the same "system" of volume control works as in the manual
for me it's fn-f5 and then the left and right arrow keys. Have you
tried to do it this way... IOW the way the manual says?

That's how my system is supposed to work, but those buttons are not
automatically configured under Linux. I saw some documentation about
configuring the function keys when I was a Linux newbie, but I haven't been
able to relocate it.

Sorry -- I should have clarified.
I think the proper term is "equalizer settings." If you have ever used
winamp, you will recall that the program downloads with several predefined
equalizer settings for various types of music -- there will be one with xtra
bass for techno songs, or extra treble for pop songs, etc. Instead of
having the Mandrake user have to define these for himself or herself, it
would be nice if there were about a dozen already there that could simply be
tweaked.

The snd-via82xx module causes my system to hard lock at boot time. If I
switch to the oss-equivalent sound driver ( via82cxxx_audio ), my system
boots just fine.

BTW, My sound card is a ‎VT82C686 [Apollo Super AC97/Audio].

If anyone has any idea why this driver would cause my system to hard lock,
I would be very thankful for the input. I would like to use the alsa

(at least, that's the way it appears from parsing the suspend scripts).

I just wanted to give an update on the status of this problem. Apparently,
the driver is configured wrongly during installation by drakx. As I stated
above, I instead installed the oss equivalent driver and was able to
successfully get through the system install. If I go back later and change
the driver back to the alsa driver using draksound, then the driver is
reconfigured perfectly. Thus, I now have sound via alsa.

So for me, this is no longer a problem; for new users, the drakx installer
needs to be corrected so that this driver is correctly configured (it would
be discouraging to Linux newbies if their system hardlocked on the first
boot).

_

Now I have one more quick update and a question:
I have been able to get the alsa driver to successfully suspend and recover
if I set the following flags in /etc/sysconfig/suspend:

RESTORE_SOUND="yes"
SOUND_MODULES="sb uart401 sound soundcore maestro cs4281
If RESTORE_SOUND="no" , then only the left sound channel recovers from a
suspend (even then, this channel sounds like it has experienced an upward
pitch shift). The only problem with setting RESTORE_SOUND="yes" is that it
causes the gnome Control Volume applet to die when I reenter xfree86. Since
this is sorta annoying, I'd like to be able to just get rid of the applet
and instead configure some laptop function keys to control my volume. Does
anyone know how I would go about doing this?

When I log into my desktop using gdm, I occasionally find that the "log out"

icons, but nothing will ever happen...

... until I run another application. For instance, if I give up and click
my terminal button to log out manually, the "Log out" menu magically appears
and I am able to log off without any problems.

[Cooker] [gdm] cannot view user photos

2003-04-03 Thread B Lauber
In gdm, the option to view user photos (user icons) does not seem to
influence the window manager. No matter if I specify that I want the photos
or not, they never appear. Instead, I am always greated with just an input
box.

This would not be a problem except for the fact that I have designed a guest
account so my friends at school could easily access my computer without
needing a password. If there is no picture for them to click at the login
screen, they will not be able to figure out how to get in unless I tell them
(which sort of defeats the purpose of my having a guest account).

The panels in gnome tend to freeze if one has to manipulate their properties
to any great extent. I have installed mdk9.1 twice now, and both times I
had to log out of gnome so that I could finish arranging my panels the way
that I need them. The only changes I had to make were:

1. I moved the initial panel from the bottom to the top of the screen.
2. I created a new edge panel at the bottom of the screen.
3. I moved the window list to the bottom panel
4. I increased the sizes of both panels.
5. I made the bottom panel hide automatically.
I will try to reproduce the error in the coming days with my guest account.

[Cooker] [acpi] acpi buttons function incorrectly

2003-04-03 Thread B Lauber
I have edited my /etc/acpi/events/power file so that whenever I press my
power button it will initiate a system suspend; however, this causes the
following problems:

1. The function only activates once; if I recover the system and then press
the button again later, nothing will happen. This appears to have something
to do with the software suspend because if I manually call a software
suspend and later call the function with a button press, nothing will happen
(the system will not suspend).

2. Activating the software suspend with the button press seems to screw up
other system services. If I manually enter into suspend with "pmsuspend",
then the system does a complete recovery after its inactivity (well, the
sound never comes back, but that isn't much of a concern at the moment);
however, if the power button calls the function "pmsuspend", then the system
services appear to get confused.

So basically I believe that the bug is either in the acpi button sourcecode,
the software suspend code, or perhaps both areas.

did you try to tweak options in /etc/sysconfig/suspend ?

RESTART_PCMCIA="no"
PCMCIA_BIOS_BUG="yes"
PCMCIA_WAIT="yes"

I've looked at the problem again and I've noticed something: If I call the
"pmsuspend" script from bash, then everything goes down and comes back
cleanly. If I call the same script from acpi (by configuring my power
button to call the script), then the script never seems to terminate -- it
just hangs indefinitely.

So, now I think it's something quirky with the acpi power button -- it seems
to call its action once but never exits the call. I don't know what effects
this has yet (aside from hanging shutdowns and being unable to suspend twice
on a single boot), but I did notice the following process when I did a "ps
-A | less" after resuming from a suspend:

 PID TTY TIME CMD
 2536 ?00:00:00 modprobe
I'm seeing if I can correct this problem by creating a script that calls
pmsuspend into the background and terminates acpid before suspending. Once
the system returns, it will create another instance of acpid ((but this
seems more like it's avoiding the problem than fixing it)).

[Cooker] PCMCIA problem in suspend scripts?

2003-03-30 Thread B Lauber
I have configured my power button to initiate the /usr/sbin/pmsuspend script
when pressed. When this script is run, the system successfully suspends to
disk and resumes; however, there appears to be something wrong with the
cardmgr once the system is running again. When I try to halt the system,
everything runs fine until it gets to the "Shutting down PCMCIA" portion (or
whatever the exact name is) -- at this point, the computer tries to restart
my ethernet card instead of shutting down PCMCIA. It will hang for about a
minute until it realizes that PCMCIA isn't shutting down, and then the
system forces a killall and shuts down.

If I force a suspend with "echo 4 > /proc/acpi/sleep" , then the cardmgr
comes back just fine (although, other services are out, but that makes
sense). When I shut down the computer, the PCMCIA cards are shut off
(instead of trying to activate my ethernet card) and the system goes down
A-OK.

I was wrong -- the suspend glitch for the VAIO FXA47 was not due to the
keyboard drivers. Earlier today, I rebuilt my kernel without support for
my network card and was able to successfully suspend and revive my system
multiple times. HardDrake offers the following information about my card:

Vendor: Realtek
Bus: PCI
Bus identification: 10ec:8139:104d:80f6
Location on the bus: 0:10:0
Description: RTL-8139
Module: 8139too
Media class: NETWORK_ETHERNET

So for right now, it's either no suspending my laptop or no internet. If
anyone can find the bug in the source (or offer an idea of where it is),
that would be great.

P.S. I think that mtrr has a problem with suspending the system as well,
but I'm not entirely sure. I will give more information if I find
anything.

I'll have to put my tower into suspend and see if I get same problem. I
have same card in it.

Just a quick update -- I created a "Linux-Suspend" kernel by removing my
Network Device suppor. I think the mtrr crash was just a freak thing
because I have been unable to reproduce it.

[Cooker] Suspend error w/ Realtek Ethernet card

2003-01-30 Thread B Lauber
[I had this message posted as "VAIO Support" before, but I thought this
would get more attention and give a better idea of where the problem was]

I was wrong -- the suspend glitch for the VAIO FXA47 was not due to the
keyboard drivers. Earlier today, I rebuilt my kernel without support for my
network card and was able to successfully suspend and revive my system
multiple times. HardDrake offers the following information about my card:

Vendor: Realtek
Bus: PCI
Bus identification: 10ec:8139:104d:80f6
Location on the bus: 0:10:0
Description: RTL-8139
Module: 8139too
Media class: NETWORK_ETHERNET

So for right now, it's either no suspending my laptop or no internet. If
anyone can find the bug in the source (or offer an idea of where it is),
that would be great.

P.S. I think that mtrr has a problem with suspending the system as well, but
I'm not entirely sure. I will give more information if I find anything.

Re: [Cooker] VAIO support

2003-01-26 Thread B Lauber
Oops! I did forget to tell my model number, didn't I?
My system is called a VAIO FXA47 in the United States (I can't locate the
name of its European counterpart).

I don't believe the problem has to do w/ ACPI. I had to rebuild the kernel
to remove the local APIC in order to fix another problem (system locking
upon reboot), and while I was at it I shut off support for ACPI.

My specs are as follows (copied from
http://bizrate.com/marketplace/product_info/overview/index__cat_id--462,prod_id--6437008,format--.html):

Well, Sony do make a lot of different laptops under the name VAIO, many
with different chipsets and BIOSes. It might help to identify your model
more accurately. (Suspend works fine under APM mode on *my* VAIO).

Sorry, I don't think I was clear last time. It's not that there is no APM
support for VAIO -- it's that it's broken. When the system recovers from a
suspend, everything will lock after 3-5 seconds (before this, the keyboard
and mouse will work perfectly.)

I have included the writup of my syslog that I promised. It may not be
exact -- I had to copy it manually since the system freezez before it is
written to the hd:

This is what my syslog reads when returning from a system suspend:

apmd[985]: System Suspend
apmd[985]: apmd_call_proxy: executing:
'/etc/sysconfig/apm-scripts/apmd_proxy' 'resume'
usb: Initializing USB controller (usb-uhci): succeeded
kernel: mice: PS/2 mouse common for all mice
network: Setting network parameters: succeeded
apmd[985]: apmd_call_proxy: + Initializing USB controller (usb-uhci): [ OK
]^M Setting network parameters: [ OK ]^M Bringing up loopback interface:
network: Bringing up loopback interface: succeeded
kernel: 8139too Fast Ethernet driver 0.9.25
kernel: PCI: Enabling device 00:10.0 ( -> 0003)

If I enter a suspend while the system is first booting up , everything will
work perfectly (keyboard works, mouse works, etc) until... well, here's the
print-up:

Mounting local filesystems: [ OK ]
Checking loopback filesystems:[ OK ]
Mounting loopback filesystems:[ OK ]
Loading keymap: us[ OK ]
Loading compose keys: compose.latin.inc [ OK ]
The BackSpace key sends: ^? [ OK ]
Enabling swap space: [ OK ]
Initializing firewire controller (ohci1394): [ OK ]
Building Window Manager Sessions [ OK ]
insmod: Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters,
including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg

Once again, I want to reiterate that I know for a fact that this problem did
not exist in Mandrake 8.0. If anyone has any idea why this problem formed
between 8.0 and 8.2 (I never tested 8.1), that would be great.

As for now, I'm going to do more research into the problem -- Chao

Just add "acpi=off" to the append line in lilo.conf (or the
configuration file for whatever bootloader you use :>). Then you'll get
APM.

ACPI works very well on my C1XD; suspend doesn't seem to work, however.
(At least not with "cat 3 > /proc/acpi/sleep", which is the only method
I've heard of to invoke a suspend under ACPI.

[Cooker] VAIO support

2003-01-25 Thread B Lauber
Sony claims that VAIO systems are not designed for Linux, but I know for a
fact that my system worked just fine w/ Mandrake 8.0. If I can see anything
in 9.1, I would like to see a modification for APM so that my system is able
to suspend again.

Here's what I know as of now: the confusion that causes the system to
lock has something to do w/ the keyboard and the system's fan (I have a
battery that causes the fan to studder at times; whenever it studders, the
keyboard studders as well. Furthermore, when the system recovers from a
suspend, it will work for about 5 seconds until the fan reactivates.). My
guess is that the keyboard is wrongly detected and registered because
between Mandrake versions 8.0 and 8.2 it has lost support for the windows
keys (in 8.0, pushing the windows key would make the K menu pop up).
I will have more information soon -- I'm going to put 8.0 back onto my
system and check the irq's of the keyboard and such.

P.S. For any of you that have a VAIO, try suspending during a system
startup (not returning from a suspend, but a fresh boot). You'll see that
the system works just fine throughout the entirety of the booting process
until it gets to something about initializing the X-window system. Next
time I write, I will include all the specific error messages and such that I
can.

[Cooker] Interface suggestions

2003-01-16 Thread B Lauber
I just thought of two things I want to put on my wishlist for 9.1:

1. Additional themes for Gnome and KDE. There needs to be a little more
variety in the styles -- something fun, something professional, etc.

2. A Gnome applet / KDE equivalent that notifies you when there are updates
for Mandrake. The e-mail system is nice, but I saw that Red Hat applet one
day and was hooked.
