Re: [Cooker] Mandrake 7.0 self-destruct

2000-01-25 Thread Christopher De Long

Yes.. I thought this would be the case also.. BUT.. after going on 7 clean
Installs. I double checked...When you select a main category you assume it
means EVERYTHING in that category will be selected. Just to double check
I selected every category heading. Then I proceeded to expand EVERY tree.
Guess what... there were intermittent packages NOT selected throughout the
whole tree. Beleive Me I WANT mandrake 7.0 to work.I get it installed..
everytime.. something goes haywire to mess up the WHOLE system. I have tried
it on 2 different machines. I have run ontrack diagnositc on the hard drive.
I have run Western Digital Diag on the Hard drive... I even wrote zeros to
the drive. HOPING it would fix the prob. It just seems to me that Oxygen was
more stable than AIR. OXYGEN kicked!

Re: [Cooker] Mandrake 7.0 self-destruct

2000-01-25 Thread Christopher De Long

So ..I take it from the reponses that Mandrake Staff Do not care what end
users think? Only Linux Gurus and geekheads matter. Hm Smells of a
Microsoft Attitude to me. I just want a stable system. I want a customizable
system. I want a system that I can learn with. Is that to much to ask? Maybe
I am not a developer/coder/compiler kind of person. I do know what I am. I
am an end user/computer business owner that builds his own machines and
machines for others. I know that when I put hardware in a system it needs to
be able to work with the OS... let me rephrase that... maybe this is the
whole industry problem the OS needs to work with ANY hardware. What a
Novel Idea. I just think it was real odd that the oxygen iso was stable...
at least it seem that way. Then along comes AIR 2 different upload
times and a mandrake7.0 iso in a different directory all in the same
night? I just don't understand why there wasn't a "stable" version out.
Kernels are tested... listed as stable when they are ready for end users to
download. Why not with OS distros? I feel like I am being laughed at because
I am unable to get mandrake 7.0 to stay working for more than a day. Beleive
me... If it was my fault it was screwing up I would be FIRST to admit it.

Chris Don't take this the wrong way... but i did have a vortex card

and i now have a "sound blaster 16" hint hint

I have a Sound Blaster AWE 64 gold sound card in my secondary computer... I could
yank it an swap them. BUT the awe 64 doesn't support software mixing. I am a DJ on
http://www.fakeradio.com
And I am able to play mp3s with another program while encoding with G2 encoder.
(this is under Windoze mind you) I was hoping to keep this feature alive by
utilizing the aureal drivers.
Is Linux and aureal and diamond enemies or something?

Took me awhile to find drivers ... and they are reference drivers at that. It
would be nice to be able to TRY it at least.

have sound support. Does anyone know what this would mean? Do I need to
recompile the kernal with some different options or something?

humm i'll build a kernel rpm with the driver, if it's not so much work
to adapt it (and opensource !!).

I have a diamond sonic S90... I installed the "vortex1" sound files. I didn't
know it was working until I got up from a nyquil nap. I started up GAIM. (AIM
clone) and all of a sudden.. Little sounds!
I am listening with real player now too
My suggestion is make sure you have the correct driver.. there are 3 different
ones.. I double checked before I grabbed one..then agin an RPM would be nice.
My event sounds don't seem to be working yet... but I haven't logged off and
back in yet either.

[Cooker] Modem Update

2000-01-21 Thread Christopher De Long

I tried other ways to get my modem to work.

Last resort I yanked the modem. I set the jumpers to com 2 irq 3. Which is
what winblows was using them at.

Fired up linux

Started Lothar...

BAM! it found it!

I am now Sending this email via Linux Mandrake 7.0!!

Question: I have people send me Html Based email. In PINE it just shows the
source code of the html NOT the cute pictures and buttons and such. Anyway to
get pine to show this . I looked in Settings. Doesn't appear to have a setting
for html.

2000-01-19 Thread Christopher De Long

I installed mandrake 7.0 on my machine that has the g400 max on it. it works
fine BUT no dual mode. also it seems to not want to allow the high
resolutions... if I try anything at 32 bit above 800 x 600 I get a flicker
effect on the test screen.

I hope I can see double in linux soon.

[cooker] No Dial up

2000-01-19 Thread Christopher De Long

I did a recommended install of Mandrake 7.0. Still No modem.

What is funny.. well Not really funny...

During the install it sets up the PPP . I tell it where the modem is . COM
2=ttsy1. I get NO errors during the install.

When I started up I go into Root. I try the KPPP dial up.
It says the modem is busy.

I checked the /dev/modem file... I tried to do an edit ... AHA there is
NOTHING there!
EMPTY file.

I checked Proc/ttsy1... same thing... NOTHING there

Checked /dev/ttsy1 NOTHING

Be aware I am a rookie to alot of things about Linux. I have always used my
Win box as a gateway. This is the box I want to be LINUX. So if I get the
modem to dial up and connect then I can work on the IpChain and use
LINUX as my gateway box.

I would be willing to call a Mandrake support person Long distance so I can
get this resolved

it is a USR sportster 56k v.90 data/fax/voice modem

it is on COM2

I/O is 02f8-02ff
Interrupt is 03

This is an internal modem

Thanks for any help on the elimination... or at least the reduction of
windows in this little wannabe geeks world.

Re: [Cooker] test

2000-01-18 Thread Christopher De Long

if your test was to see if you got duplicate messages.. it worked! I don't
like being a whiney butt... but.. getting duplicate messages is almost as
annoying as getting messages from people not wanting to receive any
messages. I like seeing the problems and solutions. BTW... I found out that
the supposed corrupt install was a bug... I couldn't install mandrake 7.0
when I used auto partition option. when I set the partition sizes myself I
got a clean install.

I personally would like ALL the developers to design a G400 server that will
let me utilize the dual monitors!

selfish aren't I?

[Cooker] 2 Cows were in a field

2000-01-16 Thread Christopher De Long

Ok... I have been downloading mandrake 70.iso for 3 days now. I know silly
of me to do huh? When I was downloading the Oxygen ISO at 90% the final came
out...so I could not resume for some reason.A friend of mine has dsl and so
he downloaded it for me and put it on a personal ftp server. I was able to
resume and finish. I installed it so I could test it while I confirmed the
new ISO was indeed the final version release. This was confirmed. So I
started downloading the latest ISO from the 2 cows site. everything was fine
.. until.. at 90% the ftp server disconnected and wouldn't let me
reconnect. So I keep trying to connect.I finally do reconnect. Low and
behold there is a new ISO file in the folder. Mandrake 6.1.1 ISO. before I
realized ... since I was getting use to resuming and resuming. I selected
the mandrake6.1.1 file. I chose resume ... Well normally if it was the WRONG
file I was resuming to it would tell you. well it didn't so for about 30
secs I resumed the 6.1.1 file to the 7.0 file. What I am asking is this. My
logic says the download is now corrupted. My stubborness says... finish the
download anyway. Is logic correct?

[Cooker] Like Plugins for xmms?

ok.. I have a freind who built a visualization plug in for xmms... he is in
the voting... the voting ends jan 24th. If ya think he is worthy.. vote for
him.. that is all I ask...it is a nice proggy.. one glitch... it installs to
the wrong location... 2 files supposed to go to
/usr/lib/xmms/visualization... they go to /usr/local/lib/xmms/visualization
instead. I put them in both. not a bad first time try. ok... go to...
wait.. he says to do this when configuring...When you do the ./configure
command, run it like
 this "./configure --prefix=/usr"
Without the qoutes of course.

go to..

downloading the final of mandrake 7.0 I will be windoze free It is
