Re: [Cooker] 6Gb Ram

I also just installed redhat 9.0 to test and it does work..

One more suggestion for this group these are hyper threading processors so Redhat shows 4 processors on a dual processor machine. Mandrake is not listed on the os page that supports it.

Using 9.1...
I have a Dell 2650 servers (9 of them) with 6GB Ram.
I tried to recompile the enterprise kernel with 64GB ram support (BigMem)
I still only see 4Gb ram.. Any Ideas? I tried Mandrake support and they said if that don't work then they can't help.
I called Dell and they said it works with Redhat...

[Cooker] enterprise kernel

2003-07-26 Thread Ray Carlino
I just bought 8 new Dell servers and need to put Mandrake 9.1 or 9.2 on
them ..
The problem is they have 6GB Ram and the enterprise kernel is only built
for 4GB.
So as a suggestion can you start building the kernel with 64GB support?
And second is there a config file of the enterprise kernel around that I
can use to rebuild with 64GB support? I want all of the same options
that are built in now but more memory..

Thanks

I am having same problem with Dell 4500 machines.

Is there a fix yet???

I have heard maybe 2.4.20 kernel fixes this problem.

Hi all

I've got a problem with my Intel I845G chipset (Asus motherboard).

I reported this bug in the middle of september. The patch

When the system boots I recieve the errors found in "lines from

In that case it is impossible to activate the dma mode for my ide

I also tried the patch that I found in another message in this

It would be great if someone may help me..

I have and am still running several machines with athlons and Mandrake.
I have 3 dual processor athlons and 3 single athlons running right now.
One of the duals is running beta 4 and soon rc1 hopefully. The problems
I have had in the past with athons is the video card.

If there are no major bugs in itPLEASE leave them in...There are people who have
problems seeing some on some monitors, and the different themes helps a LOT in those
cases. And then there are the people with different forms of color blindness...With
current setup, they can choose a combo that they can see. For example, I have a co-
worker/friend that cannot tell the difference between red and green. He CAN see
colors,
but cannot distinguish between red and green. The themed install can make the
difference between a pleasant install and a very uncomfortable on.

[Cooker] root desktop

2001-09-23 Thread Ray

Root really needs to have the option to have a full desktop..
I am an admin for about 20 Mandrale servers and when I or another admin needs
to do some work on a server it would be nice to have the same deskop. Don't
take away from root users let them decide if they want take the chance
running as root. Linux is great because users get to make these kind of
choices.

Here is another vote to have an option in 'expert' to disable this
behavior.
I spent half a day at work trying to figure out what happened to the
desktop...Removing the Desktop dir and the .kde dir and restarting
to see if it would come back and run the wizard again(which I
thought was the problem.)
If you want to make the background a different color, fine, but do
not disable important icons like the shell and kill icon!
Expecialy as you have not fixed the problem with installing on Dell
Optiplex GX110s yet.
I still cannot get anything but 640x480x16color working on the Dell
with intel video.
This is with RC1.
MD8 worked fine, but ALL versions of MD8.1 have not worked at all.
It does not even ask to test the video anymore, just goes directly to
the 'boot x on startup' question.

[Cooker] Problems with 8.1 beta 1 and beta 2 and beta 3on Dell Optiplex GX110

2001-09-15 Thread James Ray Kenney

I am reposting this because no one ever seemed to read it the first
time. Also this has been updated for Beta 3

Did upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1 Beta 1 and X Windoes would no longer
work.
Did fresh install fo 8.1 Beta 1 and same problem
Did fresh install of 8.1 Beta 2 and same problem
Did fresh install of 8.1 Beta 3 and same problem

Said it could not open screen 0 (I think)
Dell has Intel810 video (yuck, but what choice do I have at work!)
Install program is in 16 colors(or maybe 256), and looks terrible.
I can not find FB device in list for display devices.
I tried 4 with 3d and 4 without 3d, and have not had time to check 3
yet because I will have to reinstall to test it. When I went back to
start of x windows install the screen became corrupted and was
impossible to read almost anything.

After install the ONLY mode that worked at all was VGA and that
gave me only 640x480(though it may have been 320x200, it has
been too long since I used res. like that for me to tell :-) ) That was
in Beta 1.In Beta 2 even VGA mode did not work.

I am using GRUB for boot manager because in 8.0 it was the only
one that would work with Dell OptiPlex GX110.

Could anyone help?

At work we are buying NOTHING but GX110s and I would hate to
see us not be able to Dual Boot into Linux anymore.

I am beta testing XP and believe me it is not a great product!!!
The release date is OCT. 25th and there is no reason to try and compete with

Re: [Cooker] Dell Perc 3 raid controller

2001-07-17 Thread Ray

The first part of the install it does install the megaraid module I tried to
watch as the modules loaded and I get an error
"file not found in archive megaraid.o"
then during the hard drive detection it does not appear to see the raid
controller because it scans all of the scsi ids and reports finding the 3
drives seperate but aborts because of bad partition table. then it just keeps
aborting on all of the ids then finally just locks up. While using a 7.2
install all is fine it loads the megaraid module then during the harddrive
detection it sees the raid controller and reports back one large drive size.
BTW I did install Redhat 7.0 and 7.1 on this Dell serevr and it
installed ok..
It appears that it is loading the qla1280 driver and that might be whats
getting in the way. the qla1280 does not load on the 7.2 install.
I even loaded the megaraid modules manually before the hard drive detection
but it still can't see the raid drives.

[Cooker] vmware kernel source

2001-07-17 Thread Ray

I just did a clean install yesterday and now vmware wont compile the modules.

What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your
running kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include]

The directory of kernel headers (version @@VMWARE@@ UTS_RELEASE) does not
match your running kernel (version 2.4.6-4mdk). Consequently, even if the
compilation of the module was successful, the module would not load into the
running kernel.

We really need a high memory server kernel prebuilt with an option to install

know you will say just build your own.. Not a problem but when I do have
problems like now I can't get isofs to load and all I changed was the high
mem option then a lot of time is wasted that could be prebuilt in...

If it just does not show in menu at bootup.
you must do this after logging in to any other window or desktop manager:

chmod +x /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions/Gnome

that got me going...
P.S. you would not believe how long it took me to find this out!

P.S. #2 All of the Gnome programs will disappear from your KDE menus after
this but they WILL be in your GNOME menus!

[Cooker] Minor Annoyances w/ Gnome Install

2000-12-09 Thread Ray Swaim

I don't know if this has been corrected or not in Cooker, but I thought
I'd mention it, just in case. Many of the problems I've encountered (such
as the problems with update-menus and the UN-alphabetized arrangement
of the Gnome menus) existed in LM 7.1 as well, so I hope to see this
corrected before the next release.

Immediately after installation, the Gnome desktop and menus are in
complete chaos as compared to neat, orderly setup in KDE. It gives
the general impression that great effort was made to make KDE look
as nice as possible, but that Gnome is treated as an afterthought.
While I understand that KDE is the default desktop for LM, I would
like to see equal attention paid to make Gnome look nice as well.

What I mean by this is, as soon as I boot up for the first time after a
clean install and select Gnome, the desktop I'm presented with has
icons scattered randomly around the desktop. In addition, I have the
gnome "piston" icons for my printer -- is there no printer icons that
you can find to use with Gnome?

Also, the menu items in the Gnome menu are completely scattered at
random. While KDE's menus are neatly alphabetized, the Gnome menu
is not.

MenuDrake, at least in its current incarnation, seems to be completely
broken. Any item I try to add to my menus via MenuDrake never gets
added -- this goes for ALL window manager menus, not just Gnome's.
I have not been able to add items to the KDE menus either.. The only
time an item gets added to my menus is when I add an RPM and
update-menus runs automatically. Even then, though, some items, such
as RealPlayer, never get added.

The only way I've found to add an item to my Gnome menus was to
install the Helix update and use gmenu. This too causes problems,
however, because update-menus will then remove any items I add to
my menus (it will also remove any menu icons I choose too). I
eventually ended up having to rename update-menus so that it
couldn't execute.

To sum up, I'd like to be able to use MenuDrake not only to add items
to my Gnome menus, but also to arrange my menu items in the order
I choose. It's much easier to find the item I'm looking for if my menus
are alphabetized.

Thanks,

Ray Swaim

When you do a hd install don't choose a mount point for the drive that the
image is on.. After install then move the mount to where you want..

The image should be about 1.3GB you must have missed a bunch of rpms

Re: [Cooker] Diskdrake unable to detect IDE drive partitions

2000-10-14 Thread Ray

The problem is drakx.. Fdisk reads the drive fine and the OS sees it fine
after install. I can mount it without any problem but drakx still can't see
it. I use the same drive with same partition with 7.1 and it works fine. Same
with RH 6.x worked fine but duing the install of 7.0 I had the same problem.
This is a Quantum CR13.0A drive. 1528 cyl 255 heads 63 secs. I will help with
what ever I can... Here is the fdisk info.
So I just run the install without partitioning this drive and after setup I
just add it to fstab. I don't know why this happens on RH7 and Mandrake 7.2

The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 25228.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,
and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
   (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)
