I tried copying install2 to /usr/lib/perl5/site-lib/install2.pm, but then it failed because it tries to source a bunch of stuff from its working directory. A fine workaround, though in either case (Evo or Kmail) the workflow is unacceptable: 1) decide to reply. 2) click reply. 3) write message. 4) click send. 5) realize that it didn't go to the list. 6) investigate why in "Sent". 7) start a new reply using To-List workaround. 8) copy and paste from Sent into a new mail message. Steps 5 through 8 of course very rarely get done, in which case the answer doesn't get archived, the conversation thread is not public, and the usefulness of the mailing list is decreased. -- Jack Coates Monkeynoodle: A Scientific Venture...

Re: [Cooker] [Bug 1659] [initscripts] /etc/ppp/ip-down notchecking before editing /etc/resolv.conf
feature request for some future distribution: It would be grand if resolv.conf modifications supported an "always-on" set of DNS options in case the stuff provided by the local LAN is fubar or doesn't have zones you want. in /etc/sysconfig/network one would add something like ALWAYS_ON_DNS=a.b.c.d ALWAYS_SEARCH_DNS=myzone.tld the DHCP client would then write its new resolv.conf, after which nameserver $ALWAYS_ON_DNS would be appended. If no search domain has been specified by the DHCP server, then search $ALWAYS_SEARCH_DNS will also be appended. This is because it's really annoying to sign onto a new LAN and have X apps unable to find themselves because your search line has been overwritten by a braindead DHCP server. [Cooker] [Bug 516] [MandrakeUpdateRobot] New: running live_update from the install CD fails
https://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=516 Product: MandrakeUpdateRobot Component: MandrakeUpdateRobot Summary: running live_update from the install CD fails Version: 1.2-2mdk Platform: PC OS/Version: All Status: NEW Severity: normal Priority: P2 AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi, I tried to run live_update from the first Mandrake 9.0 CD, using the command /mnt/cdrom/live_update. The first error was that it couldn't find a proper shell interpreter to run it. I am trying to upgrade from Mandrake 8.2. So I then ran it using `perl /mnt/cdrom/live_update` this then brought up a window and asked whether I wanted to continue. I accepted it then crashed saying it couldn't write to a file on the CD. I can recreate the bug easiliy, if you need more information then please let me know. Regards, Phil. --- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-02-21 18:02 --- I can confirm and provide more information: Sony Vaio VX88, currently running MDK 9.0 with 2.4.20-2mdk kernel for ACPI support. combo CDRW/DVD drive is at /mnt/disk. as root, cd /mnt/disk & ./live_update produces: gmessage Mandrake Linux live upgrade Unable to find Mandrake Linux Installation Cd-Rom in the first drive. Abort The script looks like it would work if I moved my mount point to /mnt/cdrom, but since this device isn't a cdrom and there was clearly an effort to support other options via distrib=`pwd`, I think I should report the problem. Reboot with CD in of course fails because the installer can't mount the firewire CDRW/DVD. Kernel messages show that it recognizes okay and tries to do the right thing, but doesn't have an sbp2 module to install. This is fixable via burning a new El Torito disk with the network.img as documented here (http://www.monkeynoodle.org/comp/vaio), but I really don't feel like dealing right now. Okay, so I symlinked /mnt/disk to /mnt/cdrom and ran live_update again, still no soap. So I manually cd Mandrake/mdkinst/usr/bin/perl-install/ ./live_install2 (not live_install as the live_update script says). and the result is: [root@chupacabra perl-install]# ./live_install2 Can't remove /mnt/disk/Mandrake/mdkinst/usr/bin/perl-install/../../../usr/lib/rpm/rpmrc: Read-only file system, skipping file. But even though there was no reason for the installer to mess with the partition table, it shouldnt have broken the raid array when it re-wrote the partition table. Must be some bug left in the diskdrake or ataraid/hptraid modules. I have successfully on a number of occassions written the partition table with the open source driver, so it may not be diskdrake. [Cooker] Install partition manager hoses Highpoint Raid array
During the beta cycle I was surprised to find Highpoint 370 raid support in the kernel. So instead of using the "open source" driver I tried the hptraid module. I installed to a plain disk first, then inserted the modules ataraid and hptraid. What it gave me was /dev/ataraid/disc0/part1 from what I could tell in the kernel docs, it should have been /dev/ataraid/d0p1. No biggie. Then I rebooted on the installation cd, chose expert and inserted the ataraid and hptraid modules. The disk partitioning app (diskdrake?) found /dev/ataraid/d0 I made the three partitions (on raid0 array). Upon reboot the Hpt bios reports the raid array is broken and the partition table is wiped out. The raid array has to be deleted and recreated. So I used the "open source" driver and made partitions and copied the sytem over, then made a custom initrd and got /,swap, and /home on the raid array. /boot and lilo are on hda. I took the 9.0 final release and decided to try an upgrade. Again I chose expert, installed ataraid and hptraid modules. Came to the disk app and again I had /dev/ataraid/d0. The partitions were already there so I just told it ext3 and mount points thinking the partition table isnt going to be touched. But when I tried to continue it said writing partition table to disk. All I needed was to format / so it would be clean. I exited and rebooted and sure enough the raid array was broken again. Is the mount point or type written to the partition table? Jack

They are actually in the kernel: ataraid.o hptraid.o With those installed I can see the partitions on the raid 0 array. preformance is choppy but it does actually work. Diskdrake hosed the raid array during an install. During install devices are /dev/ataraid/d0p? Inserting modules in a running system makes the devices /dev/ataraid/disc0/part? which diskdrake does not recognize. The highpoint drivers may still be the best bet for now.

[Cooker] Comments & Observations
Dear Sir: I want to let everyone who beta-tests and works for Mandrake know that they have done an excellent job with this beta. It looks like your on the right track with the issue of ease of use; that is currently buggering the hell out on linux in the arena of adoption by layman. Upon installing Mandrake 7b, their appears to be no way to backtrack in the installation process, as was with the previous clones of RedHat6.x. The choices between normal, custom(3 options), and expert ought to have a more exacting description of what each means, as in development will install every version of the kernel known to man, etc. While normal, well.. I haven't figured that out yet. I think every library ought be installed by default, as it hinders the compilation and/or install of software if it is not present. Purists may find it bloated, but as an option for a normal install- I think it would be benificial. The addition of appending lilo on install I think should be standard- for normal installations, whereas you add the amount of RAM you have on the machine. Or, perhaps for the next release of Mandrake, a prog can auto-detect RAM amount, and insert it into append, if the user permits. That would be kinky. Anyhow.. After install of Mandrake 7b, the gui under kde is lacking a selection of menu's under right-click on screen/new/folder-as it is a beta, it's to be expected. Also shortcuts to various apps and games are not accurate. File not found is a fairly common occurance. The rpm'd version of Mesa does not work with current game (Q3,for ex.) releases, and it seems that you cannot upgrade Mesa without having linked apps choke on it. Upon upgrade of Mesa, with a standard rpm, no other apps seem to be able to see it as present on the system. xmms, xscreensaver, etc. This is a problem, but it doesn't break the bank just yet. I believe lesstif lib's should be included in install... I just remember that because some apps tend to use it. The autosetting of the HD or disk or whatever upon install is quite annoying. Mandrake should use the designation set up by disk-druid, or whichever was used. If you set up another FAT partion as /mnt/d, then it should use that reference and not set up a /mnt/DOS_hddx. It a bitch to work-around when the rpm gui tends to not be able to detect the switch. Upon resetting the rpm gui to the /mnt/d, for example, where the rpm's reside, it cannot access the new source of rpms. It gives an error, and cannot install the files. A tad problematic, if you wish to use the diskdrakerpm gui thing. This is the reason why people still use slackware. If your hard drive is set up as /mnt/z, then it is forever more, until linuxconf parts it, /mnt/z. Please allow people who can partition their filesystems to be able to use the non-idiot proof setup scheme. Make is WYSIWYG if you will. The hardware management, linuxconf, res setting Drake gui is excellent. I'd like to see an expanding on the prog. The hardware detect, lothar, ran beautifully- since I beta-test for Alex.. heh, just kidding. It all ran well, and kudos to everyone on the various projects. When it comes to vid/moitor resolution though.. Corel has something to look into. They mimic and surpass win9x monitor setup and res change. Very easy, fast, low overhead. The ability to enter in your monitors hor/vert freq should be allowed via gui. I still use XF86Setup because of this. The user needs the ability to add his hardware variable via gui, if he/she wishes. The defaults are never quite accurate. Easy, yes, but not accurate or to the potential of the hardware. I'm glad Mandrake is beginning to become it's own entity with all the projects we've been working on. It's still a RH6.1 clone, but much improved.. much, much improved. I apologize for the size of this comment, but you know what they say... Thoreau Get free email and a permanent address at http://www.netaddress.com/?N=1

[Cooker] Oxygen install Python miscompile
Dear SIr: Upon install of Mandrake 7b aka Oxygen, no matter which option you choose- custom, upgrade, kde wkst, or otherwise, there is a python script error. There is no way that I can see to continue the install or upgrade. I have installed using every config, and it doesn't work. Possibly my source CD-ROM is confusing it. Here is my hardware config: SCSI 12X CD-ROM 6 Gig UDMA HD Floppy AGP Vid ISA SB 256 MB RAM The Mandrake source files are on the SCSI CD-ROM. I hope this helps, although you probably already are aware of it. Take care. Thoreau Get free email and a permanent address at http://www.netaddress.com/?N=1

The release notes for gcc 2.95 state that the 2.2.x kernels need the "make -fno-strict-aliasing" flag to compile properly. Not sure if this was fixed in the 2.95.1 drop. You may want to try it. -- Jack Bowling Prince George, BC [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Just a reminder to those who are about to compile the latest 2.2.12 kernel - Linus advises against using gcc-2.95 (.1) since there are some as yet unresolved incompatibilities. Best to use the latet egcs. ====== Jack Bowling Prince George, BC [EMAIL PROTECTED]
